PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS

A story based on the life of the late Rev. Ranald Gauld

Ferdinand Ferguson and his wife Beldie lived in Keith. Ferdinand was a kindly man and helpful man. One day Beldie got stroppy with her husband. “You’ll have to tidy up your ten drawers of socks! I have nowhere to store my bloomers!” Ferdinand liked wearing bright socks and in the summer he changed his socks five times a day!

Beldie was not amused with all the washing Ferdinand created. Ferdinand just smiled sweetly at her as he unwrapped a present from someone he’d helped. “Look! It’s a new pair of socks!” Beldie told him, “If you don’t get rid of these socks, then it will be divorce!” Ferdinand’s eyes widened with delight as he whispered, “Bring it on, baby, bring it on!”

Beldie stormed off to the washing line. After half an hour, there were neat rows of socks, blowing in the breeze. Ferdinand went into the garden for a seat. It was a very hot day and he began to sweat uncomfortably. He then noticed the breeze from his hanging socks. He settled down by the washing line and fell asleep. Beldie came along and saw Ferdinand snoring. Suddenly she had an idea! She

loosened one end of the washing line so that all the socks fell on to Ferdinand. He screamed, for in his dream he thought he was being attacked by red socks, spotty socks, yellow socks and stripped socks! Beldie sneaked away, laughing. Ferdinand rushed inside, crying, “What a nightmare I’ve just had! I dreamt I was being attacked by socks and when I woke up my socks were wrapped around me, holding me down! Pack them up for the church Christmas Fayre. I never want to see them again!” Beldie was delighted! She did as he said.

That same day Ferdinand received the gift of a “Star Wars” tie. Then he received a “Muppets” tie. Ferdinand smiled, “I could do with a few more of these....” Beldie groaned, “Oh no! Notagain!” Ferdinand held up a pair of purple suede shoes, “And I could do with a few more of these too!” Beldie sighed, “Well, even although I was fed up of your socks, and I’ll probably get fed up of your ties and suede shoes, one thing is sure, I’ll NEVER get fed up of you because I love you!” And she gave him a big bosie!

When we truly love someone then we celebrate the person they are and that means celebrating their odd socks, purple suede shoes, brightly coloured ties and anything else which makes them special. When we love someone

from the bottom of our hearts then we NEVER get fed up of loving them.

We will always find ways to show our love for that person and when that person dies, we continue to show our love for them by sharing happy memories of them of which we never get fed up. We take time to appreciate all that our loved one achieved and the impact he or she made on our lives.

We may no longer see Rev. Ranald who passed away on the 5th of February, but he is still here with us as we remember his odd socks, his ties with Star Trek and the Muppets; his suede shoes; his funny jokes and not so funny jokes. He lives on in our hearts. St. Paul said, “Love, faith, hope abide these three but the greatest of these is love.” St Matthew tells us, “Whatever you bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven.” When we are bound in love for one another and for Christ, then not even death can break that bond.

The Editor

Where would we be without neighbours? In most cases our neighbours can be a source of assistance and support and over a period of time we can develop relationships that really matter to us and are of great benefit. But, like all relationships, trust needs time to build and develop and sometimes it takes a sacrifice or two to help the relationship along. When did we last do this for our own neighbour I wonder?

“ Parliament Blog ”

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES I was recently out with the family visiting Lossie Forest. I had previously seen small bits of it before but going for a proper walk uncovered some amazing military history in amongst the trees, which delighted my two boys who were excitedly exploring old gun emplacements, tank barriers and pill boxes. It occurred to me that this military history in Moray is not as widely recognised as it should be. It is a unique outdoor classroom for both children and adults to learn about an important aspect of Moray history and I would encourage others to go and have a look and learn about why these installations are where they are and who built them for our protection during the war. An absolutely fascinating experience.

Summer has properly arrived and in between MP duties and door knocking in the referendum campaign I’ve managed to get out on the bike at least a couple of times! It’s a great reminder of the amazing region of Scotland that we are lucky enough to live in and getting about on a bike certainly gives you a new perspective, giving you routes you can’t take a car or even just being able to see over hedges and finding something you’d often miss when driving past. Hopefully there will be time and good weather for a bit more cycling.

Restaurant Review Saturday 31st May. With a warm welcome we were seated in the conservatory where we were treated to the beautiful panoramic view of the golf course and the Moray Firth - a back drop that makes it easy to relax. The menu is varied, catering to all tastes and most dishes are homemade. We started off with the Smoked Haddock Chowder and Wild Mushroom Spring Rolls. Both were masterfully presented and absolutely delicious. The chowder was warming and perfectly balanced while the spring rolls were beautifully crispy with a generous and totally delightful filling. The kids had Sausage, Mash & Peas and Burger & Chips - the empty plates spoke for themselves. Jeff had the Venison Casserole which was hearty and succulent with a herb dumpling topping it off nicely and I chose the lighter option of Chicken & Halloumi salad which hit the spot with the warm chicken & halloumi on a crisp salad bed! We could not let the cheesecake of the day go untested so we shared the Rocky Road special and were

not disappointed! The staff were attentive and on hand to help and clear and chat without being too obtrusive, the atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful and the service was second to none! The bar is amply stocked with all the favourites and also offers the local Windswept Brew on tap and bottled. This is a great place for family meals, nights out with friends, lazy drinks on the beer terrace (weather permitting), functions in the dining room or a coffee in the lounge bar. Come one, come all! INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

“Many venues have a marquee in their garden, but how many have a garden in their marquee…?”

The City Break Popular for some years now, particularly for those whose time is very limited, a City Break is an excellent way of getting away for a few days and seeing some interesting and different cultures. The advantage is that you can come and go any day of the week, normally using scheduled flights, with a complete selection of differing hotels. Imagine flying directly to Barcelona, from Edinburgh, staying 3 nights in a smart city hotel full of character on a Bed and Breakfast basis as there are so many restaurants that you would want to try for lunch and dinner. Cities like Barcelona are excellent for walking about, seeing the marinas, waterfront, Las Ramblas shopping street and the Food market. Though no direct flights exist from Scotland, Vienna is another popular destination, with all its imperial splendour, Art Nouveau, waltzes and coffee houses. A grand ring of 19th century palaces surrounds the mediaeval city, with its narrow streets, hospitable inns, cafes and shops. Two sets of customers have recently joined a break to Vienna with a trip to Budapest, using the train to travel from one to the other. Both cities boast much of the 19th century grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire. It's Bela Bartok and Liszt Museums in Budapest as it is the Strauss family in Vienna.

art galleries, concert halls and churches; as a university city it comes alive at night in cellar bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Like Prague, this city largely escaped destruction during WWII. In Prague only one building was hit during that war, and it is now known as the American Church in honour of its bombers! Athens now has direct flights from Edinburgh. The Acropolis, Temple of Athena & the National Archaeological Museum are all in the city and a trip to The Sacred Site of Delphi to see the Temple of Apollo would provide enough knowledge to get a Gold Star in any school project on Ancient Greece! The Plaka area of Athens with it's maze of narrow streets is perfect for browsing stalls selling pottery, jewellery and marble. Eating out here is mainly outdoors in the Tavernas specialising in Souvlaki (kebab), spanakopita (spinach pie) & Meze (greek tapas) all washed down with some surprisingly good local wine!

There are many suitable Italian cities to visit for a short time and Florence is one of the finest settings of them all. On the banks of the River Arno, Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and the city of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto, Dante and their patrons the Medici family. When you are there a visit to the Uffizi Gallery and Museum is a must! There are direct flights now from Edinburgh to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland. Krakow is rich in museums, Information kindly supplied by

Words by the Wayside “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights...Of his own will begat He us with the word of truth.” (James1:17,18)

God could have sent His Son Jesus Christ to condemn the world instead of “whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.” Through the tender mercy of our God, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He is the gift of God, Christians are His workmanship. Have you like Peter cried, “Lord, save me”? He is God’s gift; He is the work of truth.
