A BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream -Lingering in the golden dream Life, what is it but a dream? A poem by Lewis Carrol

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Do you have dreams? Perhaps you are dreaming of a long, hot, relaxing summer. Maybe you are hoping for good exam results for yourself or someone you care about. Perhaps you have a vision of a better world, where the news isn’t full of despair and disaster. Maybe you dream of being rich and famous! We have all sorts of dreams, with all levels of seriousness from wild fantasies to dreams we commit our lives to. These dreams can be ours alone, or we may share them with our families, our communities and wider groups. What shapes our dreams? What makes a dream worth shaping our lives around? Through the prophet Joel, God promised to share God’s vision and dreams with people - big dreams for the whole world. God said, “I will pour out my spirit on everyone: your sons and daughters will proclaim my message; your old folk will have dreams and your young folk will see visions. At that time, I will pour out my Spirit even on servants, both men and women.” (Joel 2:28-29) Christians believe that promise was kept on a Pentecost day in Jerusalem

nearly 2000 years ago. That day we’re told that all Jesus’ friends and followers were gathered together when God’s Holy Spirit came on them, with a noise like a rushing wind and what looked like tongues of fire. Those women and men, very ordinary, flawed, confused women and men, like the rest of us, were transformed. They found themselves speaking aloud in many languages, telling everyone “all the great things that God has done” (see Acts 2:1-21 for the whole story). Amongst the chaos, Peter, a very ordinary, flawed, confused fisherman, explained to the crowd that this was God’s promise coming true, God’s Spirit coming on young and old, women and men, slaves and free, no matter who. Filled by God’s Spirit, their minds and hearts were opened. They could dream God’s dreams, glimpse God’s vision, and share all the wonderful things God does. They could do this through God’s love, that love Jesus had shown in his life and death. God’s vision is big. Dreams of justice and peace for the whole world. A vision of love and welcome for all people, no matter who they are.

Messages of hope and healing, for a world that so needs to hear it. These are also dreams that everyone can dream. No-one is too old, no-one is past it. No-one is too young to contribute or share. No-one’s gender, status, wealth or poverty stops them from dreaming. “Whoever calls out to the Lord for help will be saved.” Whoever. Whenever. Wherever. All can be filled with God’s Spirit, all can dream, and all can be transformed. This summer, I hope you get some time to dream – for yourself, for your loved ones, for your community, for the world. As Oscar Hammerstein wrote in “Happy Talk”: “You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?” And as we dream, may we open our minds and hearts, so that God’s Spirit may fill us, that we might all dream God’s dreams, see God’s visions, and follow Jesus in making them come true.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES This is my first Spotlight column since the election and so I’d like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you for re-electing me to represent Moray in the Scottish Parliament! It has been an absolute honour to be an MSP here for over 10 years and I look forward to working hard in the next 5 years. During the election campaign my team and I literally knocked on thousands of doors, listening to people’s views. Over the next 5 years you can be sure that I will work hard for everyone in Moray, whether you voted for me or not. If I can be of assistance to you in any way please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office or feel free to contact me directly at richard.lochhead.msp@parliament.uk. Once again, thank you for investing your trust in me and I’ll be working hard to ensure that Moray is represented to the best of my ability. Richard Lochhead MSP

Well, it's been an eventful few weeks. For a start, I got married to my fantastic partner Jen! It was a great day and a huge thank you for the many messages of congratulation that we received following our announcement. More recently I have been involved in European Referendum debates both in Moray and elsewhere. At the time of writing the referendum hasn't yet happened but by the time you read this we'll have an answer on it one way or another! I am also in the final preparations and training for the annual Tattie Scone Competition that takes place alongside the European Pipe Band Championships in Forres. Again it's in between writing the blog and folk reading it so I'll be able to tell you next time how well or otherwise my intensive preparations, testing of different ingredients and general limbering up for the hotly contested competition has gone! Competition Highland Dancing open to all age groups is a very popular and colourful event enjoyed by the overseas visitors, as are the Solo Piping competitions.

The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies”, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering. Local highland games such as Forres have over many years been a nurturing ground for developing young athletes who have gone on to represent their country at prestigious events such as the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Grass track cycling races provide a dynamic thrilling spectacle. The Games host the North of Scotland Scottish Grass Track Championship. There is sure to be a good entry and keen competition for the title. The “message boy’s bike” race, a unique crowd

The Tug-o-War competition is another crowd pleaser with local teams competing for the Harry Troup Trophy.

This year the Games welcome to the arena for the first time the local Military Wives Choir who will entertain the crowd with a selection of songs during the afternoon. The highlight of the afternoon is the Massed Pipe Bands marching around the arena to the skirl o the pipes and swish o’ the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one for the photo album. There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent. Staging the 88th annual Forres Highland Games is only possible through the dedication of the unpaid Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses.

F F

S

S S

We would like to cordially invite you to Hopeman Gala 2016, our 42nd year of running this special 8-day event. As usual, it marks the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by an extremely dedicated team of volunteers who form the Gala Committee. It could not happen, though, were it not for the huge amount of community spirit in the Village. We are so thankful to the churches, shops, pubs and businesses that continuously support us. We are also extremely grateful to all the people who dedicate their time to help during the week, whether it be serving teas, baking cakes, setting quiz questions, playing songs or even tent sitting. Your help is very much appreciated: thank you.

S

Community spirit very much underpins the theme of the Gala this year, particularly as we try to link generations across the Village. Our showcase event this year is the ABBA Tribute Night on 16th July. Tickets are available now at shops in the Village for ÂŁ10 per person: it promises to be a fun night for all. Tickets for Soup and Sweet, Variety Show, Tombola and Craft Sessions will be on sale at the Memorial Hall on 2nd and 9th July - 10am to 12:30pm

“An exquisite dining experience!” The Drouthy Cobbler have added another string to their already impressive bow - a pop-up restaurant upstairs on Saturday nights only! For those of you looking for a refined culinary experience, look no further. On arrival the bar area buzzed with excited energy and was comfortably full of relaxed, happy faces and then we were taken upstairs where the dramatic difference in decor and atmosphere was stunningly breathtaking. In contrast to the earthy, cave-like feel of the bar downstairs, the restaurant was all black with white linen, shiny cutlery, crystal clear glasses and a stylish bar. The soft music and low lighting made you feel like you were stepping into another world. Once seated we were offered water for the table and a selection of delicious breads. The staff cannot be faulted - upstairs or down - they present a friendly and upbeat attitude, communicate specials, make menu recommendations and listen well to customer orders. They are always happy to help and nothing is too much effort. Happy staff will always go the extra mile. There is a set, 3 course menu with the option of having only 2 courses and is different every time. Our selection that night was sublime. I started with Beef tartare, slow cooked egg yolk, toasted brioche and brie fondue and it was truly remarkable, perfect actually! I could've had seconds which is more a reflection on the otherworldly taste than the portion size. My husband had Spiced Orkney crab cakes, tomato & sweetcorn salsa with baby herb salad and he was equally as delighted with his taste sensation. For the main course, I decided to go with Seared tuna loin, olives, fine beans, sun dried tomatoes, jersey royals & sauce gribiche - a delightful feast for the eyes and equally as exquisite on the tastebuds! My other half was spoiled with Slow cooked Clash farm pork belly, crispy polenta, chickpea cassoulet, spinach & Stornoway black pudding - all the things that ring his bells! Dessert seemed too much to tackle alone as we were both sated, but it would've been rude not to - right? We decided to share and were recommended the Chocolate blondie with peanut butter sauce - it was served with vanilla ice cream and we were glad we 'made space' The dishes were executed perfectly both to look at and taste. I know I sound like I'm gushing, but with good cause. I'm competent in the kitchen so when I go out I love to eat something I couldn't or wouldn't make myself and this was truly a gastronomic sensation! Oh, I forgot to mention the expansive array of drinks - but we'll leave that for another time! A review by Jeff & Tamsyn - June 16

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals affected by alcohol and drugs. We support both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families affected by a loved one’s substance use. The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.

program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting effective communication, providing whole family activities, play and positive experiences.

As Recovery is personal the confidential nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.

Friends, family or others connected to an individual may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Being in a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey.

Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment

Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.

Worried about a loved one and their substance use?

We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.

Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its 218th Annual Show on Saturday the 30th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn.

Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. This year’s show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd. Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary school child, £1 per primary child, and pre-school children having free admission. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities. Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce and fancy goods as well as the very latest agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area.

Family

There will also be a display of vintage tractors and machinery, a range of catering facilities, including the return of a public catering marquee and a licensed bar. As ever the marquee competitions will be highy competitive and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture, wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts. Main Ring entertainment will include visits by Ringside Lurchers and Nairn and District Pipe Band. It will also feature a Vintage Tractor Parade, Horse and Carriage Display, The Penguin’s Tuxedo Street Band, Livestock Parades and Children’s races. Horse Show Jumping will also take place in a separate arena and also in the main ring later in the day. The Nairn Show website, www.nairnshow.org.uk, will be updated regularly between now and show day to give the most up to date information regarding the show. The day will be rounded off with a Marquee Dance in the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by BIRO.
