PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “The love of Christ urges us on” (2 Corinthians 5:14 NRSV) In July the Church remembers three of Jesus's close companions: St Thomas, St James the Great and on 22nd July St Mary Magdalene. St Mary Magdalene has been much written about in recent years. There has been much speculation about her relationship with Jesus.

Mary Magdalene, her name tells us that she came from Magdala, a large city on the west coast of the Sea of Galilee, was – the first witness of The Resurrection. The divine promise was fulfilled in the experience of St Mary Magdalene. We, too, can find a transforming newness through Christ in both Word and Sacrament.

St Luke tells us that, along with a group of other women, she ministered to the daily needs of Jesus and his disciples, describing Mary as a person "from whom seven demons had gone out". (Luke 8:2 NRSV) In healing Mary, Jesus had both restored to her a life she thought she had forfeited by her illness, and in so doing had demonstrated his power over evil and in return, grateful for her deliverance, she loved Jesus dearly.

Mary would have appreciated Paul’s

words appointed for the New Testament reading on her festival: "If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation. Everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!" (2 Corinthians 5:17 NRSV) Precisely Mary's experience - Christ had restored her: she was "in him" and now things were entirely different.

Her true significance is as the first apostle or witness of the resurrection: all the Evangelists give her a key place in the events of the Resurrection. John's Gospel (20:1118) tells of her shock at discovering that the body had disappeared. Mary panicking and failing to see the angels says to the person whom she takes to be the Gardener: "If you have carried him away tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away". For Mary even the dead body would have been better than no Jesus at all. Then the familiar voice utters her name. "Mary". It is one of the heart-stopping moments in the Gospel narrative, and he says "Do not hold on to me", because the Risen Christ is a different Christ. It is always tempting to cling on to the Jesus we know – the Jesus of the historic church, of the beloved liturgy, of a familiar Bible version. Mary had to

Just as Mary was healed of her demonic possession by Christ, so the Risen Lord transforms her from a dejected and dispirited mourner into a joyful obedient mature witness of the Risen Christ and empowers her to go to find the disciples and tell them of what has happened – the first to see the Risen Lord, the first by his grace to preach him. "Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples: "I have seen the Lord" (John 20:18 NRSV) Mary's experiences are relevant to us: unimaginably she received Christ's healing and transforming love. She too had experience of the power of the Risen Christ empowering her for his service. By God's grace, that can be our experience and we too can know what Paul meant by “The love of Christ urges us on”. The driving force of a Christian life is Christ's love for those who follow him. It gives new purpose and opens up new horizons.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

“Parliament Blog ” With the General Election in May, the last few months have been incredibly busy for those of us involved in politics. So as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s been great to spend more time with my family and have the opportunity to enjoy some of our fantastic local events now that it’s all over.

Along with around 3000 others, my family managed to make it along to the Pitgaveny Farm Open Day. The weather was good, the event was great fun and hopefully lots of money will have been raised for charity. We’re really very lucky in Moray to have such a great calendar of events throughout the year, especially in the summer, and I’m certainly looking forward to making it along to as many of them as possible. Here’s hoping the sunshine attends them all too!

This is my first Spotlight Column since my reelection in May as Moray's MP and it is a further opportunity to express my gratitude to the people of Moray for once again placing their trust in me to represent them at Westminster. It is always a humbling experience for me to have so many people actively choose to vote for me and, with the help of my office staff in Elgin, I will continue to work as hard as I can on the issues that affect Moray and the people who live here.

It has been slightly surreal going from a group of 6 in Westminster to a group of nearly ten times that with 56 SNP MPs but we have hit the ground running and I am privileged to be working with a strong group of MPs with such commitment and such a breadth of talent.

The hard work continues!
