The Editor

In last month’s Editor’s View I mentioned that Winter seemed to be ‘hanging on’. Well - at the time of writing we still seem to clinging desperately to the Winter snaps. Still, for any sun lovers out there it appears that ‘down south’ is not much better! Not that we should seek to gain pleasure from the discomfort of others but that sometimes it feels good to know that we are not alone!!

Pastoral letter and Church Meetings In Galatians chapter 2 Paul wrote:- “Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rulekeeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God's grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily.” (The Message)

Paul was facing a problem. The church in Galatia, modern day Turkey, had accepted the Gospel of Grace, that you were saved by faith in Jesus Christ. However others had visited who were convinced that Christianity was just a sect of Judaism so you had to obey all the Jewish laws as well. In this letter Paul refutes that claim saying that if salvation could come about by keeping the

law then Christ’s death was not necessary. We still face this problem today. Many find it hard to accept the grace of God. Many find it hard to receive that grace unconditionally. They are looking for a catch, they are looking for someone to say you are saved by grace but…. However the good news of the Gospel is that there is no “but.” We are saved by grace and grace alone, if you will just believe in Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. This is why Paul often talks about the freedom of the Gospel. You are no longer enslaved by laws but are free to live, and that, remember, is one of the things that Jesus himself said, that he came to give us life and that, in abundance. He did not come that we might simply go on existing but that we might live. So many

people go through life simply existing, like living automatons and yet that is not God’s will for your life. That is not what he created you to be and do. He wants you to live!

When was the last time you felt really alive? You know what it is like. All your nerves are tingling, adrenaline is flowing through your body and you cannot wipe that stupid grin off your face! I want to invite you to come back to life! Put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ and in his grace. EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 5TH OF MARCH 2012 OF KEITH COMMUNITY COUNCIL

POLICE MATTERS There were 26 recorded crimes in Keith which included :1 dishonesty 9 disorder crimes 5 road traffic offences The remainder were undetected crimes of theft of diesel, metal and tools at rural properties. Anyone with information can contact 0845 600 5 700 or Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111 or call in at Keith police station.

Sergeant Black and JM took up the subject of the numerous letters that have been printed in the local Banffie in recent weeks. Sergeant Black pointed out that the issues raised in the letters are not nearly as bad as they are being portrayed. These issues have been happening for many years – the cars going around the circuit in Keith with loud exhausts. He stressed that issues that are reported are being dealt with by the police. People reporting also need to give a registration number if it’s related to an anti social driving aspect. There is a big problem with litter being thrown out of cars in the town. It was also said that the people responsible for the behavior are not educated and probably are not aware that they are causing bother. Do they read the local papers? Might be an idea to go to schools etc and even to MacDonald’s (where a lot of the rubbish is coming from) to hand out leaflets to drivers of cars. Another place that has litter dropped is the Factory Shop car park. There will be a meeting with local action groups and other relevant interested agencies set up. Question was asked if the CCTV is in Operation. Sergeant Black said that they were and he took three residents to Elgin to view the CCTV. There were no signs of any anti social behavior when shown the CCTV. It is not happening all the time. JM said that since losing the youth workers from the streets this has had an

impact on anti social behavior. There will also be anti social behavior driving operation coming soon again. If you see someone using a mobile phone whilst driving you can report them with their registration number to the police. A letter of warning will be sent to the offender. Motorbikes at the Den and Dunnyduff woods are still ruining the tracks. Police are aware. NC reported that two jeeps have been seen up the Dunnyduff woods and trees have been cut down and a fence has also been wrecked. Walkers are complaining of the damage. SC and CL will investigate. SC thought it may well be work that is being carried out by contractors which NC disagreed with. Treasurer Report – MC gave a treasurers report. It was decided to give money from the account to the Jubilee Gala which is being held at either the Simpson park or Kynoch park. Councillors agreed to give a donation for the running costs to this event. There are talks to get the Gala up and running next year.

Diane soon to discuss the matter.

CORRESPONDENCE There is a consultation on affordable housing. JM will bring it along to the next meeting and reply to it.

SC wrote to the Council regarding a manhole cover that needs to be seen to in the town. The repairs to the Auld Brig - Craig Wilson the Heritage Officer, will be contacted to discuss the way forward with this matter. It is the oldest used bridge in Moray. The Community Asset Transfer Seminar to be held at Elgin Town Hall - 20th March – 9 am to 2.30pm

Community Unit Workshop – Keith Community Centre – Weds 20th March 6.3pm0 – 9.30pm JCC – Community engagement seminar JM, CC and IC will try to go to this meeting. Linda Adam has advised that there is free website design available. JM thought she could set up a facebook page for KCC. JM read out changes to Street Traders License – she went through the questions with councillors and replied to the questionnaire. Newmill post office is closing it is hoped temporarily. The present owner is retiring due to health reasons. The planting of a tree to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee will either be planted at the Matthew Stewart Gardens or Scotscraig Gardens.

MATTERS ARISING The yellow box to go on the junction at A96/ A95 is to be painted within the next couple of weeks. The Banff road junction is to be reviewed again as the new Primary School is up and running. There is a lot more traffic coming along Banff Road now. Pelican crossing was suggested at Banff Road. The Lane going down School Road to Drum road will be reviewed again as there are a lot of children now walking down the lane as well as traffic. Cars are seemingly not using the drop off point at the top of Drum road. JM thought this was to be used by SFL staff only. (support for learning) Lollipop person could go up to School Road. GC still looking into the option of a path from School Road to Church Road through the old Green School. JM told Councillors that councillor DH has handed in her resignation but hoped to speak to

" A few weeks ago I was tasked with judging the Rothes 'Tattie Bogle' competition. For Scots spikkers out there that will require no explanation but for the uninitiated it is the good Scots word for a scarecrow! " Judging competitions always gets me worried. After all you are likely to please few and disappoint many! However, the Rothes folk are forgiving in that respect and also very talented at making tattie bogles."

" A big congratulations to the organisers of this year's Speyside Whisky Festival. I had the pleasure of participating in part of it and it was great to see so many visitors from all over the world.

" With those visitors going home and extolling the virtues of Moray we can only continue to benefit more and more from a fantastic festival." Angus Robertson MP

The Antiques Roadshow at Cawdor Castle A raft of antique experts will validate and examine the various items testing their knowledge and offering insight into the stories and traditions of old…..much like a visit to the Castle itself!

Cawdor Castle is proud to welcome the BBC Antiques Roadshow on Thursday 21st June. The Roadshow was last in Inverness-shire in 1995. Cawdor Castle, a magical place steeped in history is the ideal location for a show, renowned for uncovering history. As is frequently the case we envisage that the crowds attending will bring their precious trinkets, artefacts and memorabilia, that will no doubt unveil a hidden gem from years gone by, or perhaps a dormant heirloom with high value that will bring a smile to the owner’s face.

Walking round this 14th century Castle one is fascinated by the history, stories and atmosphere of the home of the Thanes of Cawdor – mentioned by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth. There is also the added pleasure of reading through the late Lord Cawdor’s room notes that will certainly amuse the reader. The event will be an exciting day for all involved and attending. The stunning gardens will be in full flower giving spectators and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the hard work of our Cawdor Castle gardeners. Cawdor Castle and Gardens will be open to the public until Sunday 30th September, daily from 10am to 5pm. Tel. 01667 404401. Email info@cawdorcastle.com

Dreaming of... A different side to Tenerife!

With more and more holiday makers looking to travel from their local airport, Tenerife may seem to be a repetitive choice, but why not try some of these Canary Islands hidden gems. The island of La Gomera lies to the west of Tenerife and is ideal for a short break or as a twin-centre with Tenerife. Just a 45 minute ferry crossing from Los Cristianos, it is a far cry from the lively southern resorts. Steeped in history this sleepy island is unspoilt and has a dramatic landscape of terraced valleys and plunging ravines, and according to the locals the best views of Mount Teide. Car hire is definitely the best way to see the best of this island, roads are winding but recently resurfaced and widened and are easily navigated. The Garajonay National park with its dense, lush flora and fauna is a walker’s paradise with mapped trails and guided walks through the rainforest. Lunch at the Casa Conchita restaurant is a must with traditional cuisine, local wines and spectacular panoramic views from your table. Back on Tenerife, there are unspoilt towns such as Garachico, recently featured on channel 5’s Holiday Heaven on Earth. Garachico in the north of the island is an uncommercialised fishing village and an ideal way to see real Canarian life! The locals still meet in the evenings under the old trees in the bustling town square. And the crystal clear waters at the volcanic pools are ideal for a dip, or for the braver a diving platform. Visit Santa Cruz, the historic yet cosmopolitan capital city in the north east with the abstract Auditorium Opera House, home to the Tenerife symphony orchestra, hosting numerous musical events throughout the year. The lively bazaar and food market also draw tourists to this area. Tenerife and La Gomera have a wealth of activities you may not associate with the islands including, hiking and rambling, mountain biking, paragliding, cookery schools, wine tasting, whale and dolphin watching, diving, swim with turtles, the list is endless. With year round temperatures of 20-25c and regular flights from Aberdeen why not discover a new side to Tenerife!

T

As I walked back to the road, the car park opposite the path to Insh Church was half full. This was not Sunday but 9.00am on a bright warm Friday morning in late May, so what was the attraction? Across the road, by the side of Loch Insh, several groups of people were standing gazing intently at a pile of sticks in a pine tree on a small island about 500 metres away. The small white dot occasionally appearing on top of the pile of sticks was With theofhelp of the head of an Osprey sitting on her eggs. With the help b binoculars, the Osprey’s mate could be seen sleeping on a branch high up further back on the Island. The tiny black and white blob sharing the loch with a small sailboat was a rare duck called a Goldeneye. So, with these rare birds in front of me why was I leaving to have breakfast? At 5am on the same day the car park was deserted. Loch Insh was like a dark mirror and on the far bank mist was forming where the first rays of the sun came over the hills behind me. I settled down by the shore 200 metres from the Osprey’s island and waited. In the Sallow bushes above me a pair of Willow warblers were systematically searching for small green caterpillars and, despite being only a few metres away, they ignored me. To my left, three Roe deer stepped into the Loch and appeared to be walking on water as they made through the shallows to the island to feed greedily on the new reed growth. To my right, a Golden eye drake slipped low into the water moving like a torpedo to attack a rival; driving him off in a flurry of wings and spray. Then movement on the dark surface of the Loch caught my eye, a V-shaped wake heading for the bridge; two otters returning to the river after a night hunting in the reed beds.

Meanwhile, having spent an hour preening every feather and prompted by impatient calls from his mate, the male Osprey decided it was time for action. He slipped from his branch and circled low over the loch between the Island and the bridge. On seeing a fish he started to dive, aborting at the last second and flying up the Spey. A little while later, the female stood on the side of the nest calling, the male flew back over the bridge holding a fish. After leaving it in the nest he set off down the loch, returning with a pike which he ate on the preening branch. The sun was now well up on the other side of the Loch. Six hundred metres away, the flap of a tent opened and I heard a conversation about breakfast. Cars were parking by the road. T slipped back from the island, the Osprey sat back into The deer the nest, a family of Goldeneye hid in the reeds and a Common Sandpiper feeding nearby flew off with a penetrating alarm call. Clearly the action was over for the morning and I returned to the car park looking forward to breakfast. Mike Rae Mike Rae

festivals 8 -10th June This month sees the Rockness monster explode onto our Highland banks once again as a wealth of known and not so well known talent hit several stages for three days. Over 30,000 festival revellers, including a high proportion from Moray, are set to hit the shores of Lochness for a mixture of musical madness and matrimony. Live comedy sets from the likes of Tim Minchin and Daniel Sloss, an inflatable church enabling music goers to tie the knot returns and plenty of music galore from Friday, June 8 is expected to take Dores by storm.

Hosting the best of the best in an overdrive of international talent, from Friendly Fires to Noah and The Whale to Zane Lowe, is just scratching the surface! Headliners include Mumford and Sons, Deadmau5, and Biffy Clyro. It doesn’t stop there… Ed Sheeran, Death In Vegas, Filth DJs, The View and Mylo are all set and raring to go to brace the Northern Scottish stages.

Moray bands and DJs from all over Scotland have been invited to showcase their musical talents this year and will feature at the Main Stage and new stage, Arcadia UFO for an altogether refreshed and revitalised Rockness.

8

Day, weekend, camping and VIP tickets are on offer for an altogether summer subliminal experience and will create lasting ‘Joy.Discovery.Invention’ memories for many years to come for Moray music lovers...
