The Editor

I read recently that Dolphins are really smart. They’re certainly quite cute but I wonder if they could beat the vocabulary of our old dog that died recently. She was a Bordie Collie and we worked out that she could recognise and respond to about 400 words (names, objects and activities). She could even recall names from 10 years previous. I’ve never had a pet dolphin but I bet they couldn’t beat that unless you know different!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS

I was recently asked by a nonChristian friend, do I fear about the state of the church in Scotland? It's a good question, one which causes me frequently to think as a pastor. Peter describes the Christian's hope in 1 Peter 1:3, which reads: ‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead'. (NIV) Peter, first of all, reminds the Christian that they have been born again. The centrality of being born again is essential if the church is going to model hope in this country. After all Jesus states in John 3:6; 'unless you be born again you won't enter the kingdom of God'. (NIV) Secondly, Peter writes to remind the Christian that they have been born again into a 'living hope'. The Christian hope is living and rooted in Jesus Christ. In fact, we see very clearly, it is through the resurrection

of Jesus Christ that the believer is filled with hope for the present and the future. The resurrection of Jesus is our only hope because without it 'our faith is futile as we would still be in our sins' (1 Corinthians 15:17). It is therefore important to note that Easter is not just something which brings hope to the Christian one weekend a year but brings us hope 365 days of the year. Many people in life try to find hope in many places, such as their jobs, through their relationships and from their possessions. I truly believe that the only need which satisfies all our hopes and desires is when we come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Finally, the Christian hope goes beyond the grave. In fact, we read that those who have come to personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ will; 'enter into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you' (1 Peter 1:4). The Christian

can face death with confidence as they can say; 'Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?... But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ' (1 Corinthians 15:55,57). To go back to my friend’s question - do I ever fear about the state of the Christian Church in Scotland? My answer is no. My prayer for you all echoes the words of the Apostle Paul: 'May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit' (Romans 15:13).

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES As we approach the 2014 Commonwealth Games I’m reminded of the huge success of Scottish and UK summer and winter Olympians and Paralympians in recent years. Glasgow will be welcoming 6,500 athletes representing 70 nations to Scotland this summer. It will be a great opportunity to promote the best Scotland has to offer, and present Scotland and the Highlands to the world. We may not always have the best sporting weather here in the Highlands, but we have always been able to produce more than our fair share of sports stars competing on the world stage. No doubt a mix of fresh air and strong support for our local champions. On Friday 11th July I, like many, will be welcoming the Queen’s Baton to the Highlands and I’m a greatly looking forward to what I’m sure will be another sporting success for Scotland. The best of luck to everyone taking part.

Not many politicians are known simply by their Christian names. Margo was, however, one. This month the celebration of her life was held in the General Assembly Building and tributes were made by my friend and colleague Alex Neil, actress Elaine C Smith and Margo’s husband, Jim Sillars. He said that Margo had a heart as big as Arthurs Seat and the Proclaimers sang Sunshine on Leith. Another person known in politics by his first name is Dennis (Canavan) He and I spoke at independence meetings in Nairn and Inverness. He is a strong speaker and a fine character whose commitment to social justice shone through. He said that hope will triumph against fear - and that was also a view Margo espoused. This month I am travelling to Houston to attend the OTC - the biggest oil and gas trade conference in the world. Last year and the year before I attended and met with many companies who have since enhanced their presence in Scotland with the creation of thousands of jobs. This time we also have a great story to tell with the industry expanding furth of Aberdeen - including the North. I hope the positive news will continue.

A New Trend for Traditional Houses Old houses, like most old people, need to be looked after properly. New houses are built with increased levels of insulation as standard but what about the traditional stone houses that many people prefer? Improving energy efficiency in these houses is certainly possible and generally just means taking a different approach. Moses Jenkins of Historic Scotland has been carrying out trials to find suitable improvement methods and is coming to Elgin to share his technical expertise. Local tradesmen, architects, surveyors and property owners/occupiers are invited to the Harvest Centre, 10 Greyfriars Street, Elgin on Thursday 19th June from 9.30am till 3pm. Training is free and a buffet lunch will be provided. ‘Green Deal’, which covers the cost of installing energy efficiency measures by providing an interest free loan (repayable via savings made on electricity bills), could result in an increase in demand for the skills to carry out the work. Elgin and Keith Conservation Area Regeneration Schemes (CARS) are pleased to be hosting this event and are encouraging everyone with an interest in traditional properties to attend. To confirm attendance, email: kirsty.conti@moray.gov.uk (Elgin) or ross.mccleary@moray.gov.uk (Keith). Two CARS drop-in sessions will also be held in June for anyone interested in applying for grants to repair their historic buildings. On hand will be planning and conservation officers from The Moray Council, local tradesmen skilled in the repair of traditional buildings and Kirsty & Ross, the CARS officers for Elgin and Keith. The sessions are in Keith, Longmore Hall, 9th June, 5-8pm and on 13th June, 1-4pm in the Gallery at Elgin Library. Just pop down when you’re able and any of your questions regarding CARS funding and traditional building maintenance will be answered.

The Hotel serves bar meals from 12 noon till 2:00pm and 5:00pm till 8:00pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and offers a menu to satisfy everybody, with a few excellent twists to attract the eye. Would I choose to take friends and family to The Garmouth for a meal? Most certainly, yes! I would recommend the warm atmosphere created by Grant the manager, his friendly and efficient service, his chef and the delicious menu – don’t just take my word, call in soon to enjoy your own lunchtime or evening meal at The Garmouth Hotel.

weekends the hotel has a great choice of specials, and as I was there for Sunday Lunch I was delighted to see Roast Beef and Roast Lamb available. I chose Roast Beef and was soon enjoying very generous portions of beef, Yorkshire pudding, roasties etc. Was it good? It most certainly was, so much so that having demolished the plateful I felt unable to partake of what I am sure would have been a wonderful Eve’s Pudding. Although as the driver I had a soft drink, the hotel bar is well stocked with all the usual beers, wines and

Pack your case and holiday in the USA The States has never been at the top of my ‘wish list’ but after my 3 week trip to the West coast I can’t wait to return! I split my time between San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, with a journey through Yosemite National Park and Death Valley. San Francisco was my favourite, I pre-booked most of my excursions before I travelled to make the most of my 4 nights in the city. A highlight was Alcatraz, located on an island off San Francisco. It was used as a federal prison between 1933 and 1963 and housed such in-mates as Al Capone. Instead of the usual flight between San Francisco and Vegas I decided to take a 1 night, 2 day trip through Yosemite National Park and Death Valley. Seeing the vast comparison between the green, lush National Park with Yosemite falls, the fourth tallest waterfall in the world in full flow (May is the best time to see this) and the barren emptiness of Death Valley was amazing.

Wonders on the world, the Grand Canyon is a must. Excursion options are endless, we chose the ‘sunset helicopter tour’ landing in the canyon for a glass of champagne to view the sunset before flying home over The Strip. My last stop was Los Angeles, ‘The City of Angels’ we split our time between Beverly Hills for shopping and celeb spotting and Santa Monica for the beach and surf. A tour of Los Angeles is recommended to see all parts of the city – from Venice Beach, or Muscle Beach as it is perhaps better know to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Sunset Strip. A day spent at Universal Studios for the launch of the new attraction ‘Transformers 3D’ was well worth the hour trip from Beverly Hills. Santa Monica was the perfect way to finish off what was a busy 3 weeks.

Vegas is like nothing I have ever seen before! The Strip really comes to life at night with the fountain show at the Bellagio Hotel and an erupting volcano at the Mirage Hotel. A trip to one of the Information kindly supplied by

We also have a number of junior coaching camps during school holidays for the kids, including this summers ClubGolf Camp running from 7th -11th July. Our junior memberships are also available from only £20.

“I believe in trying to make people have fun on the golf course and in the process enjoy playing the game more! I don't teach a method but believe in teaching everyone on an individual basis taking into account their ability, physical limitations, time constraints and goals. I work with each individual to find a suitable solution that they are happy with.”

We are also offering any new members to the golf club a free hour with myself so that I can give them some golf tips and show them around the course. We are at an advantage here at Moray GC as we have two fantastic 18 hole courses which offer a fair but true links experience and in most cases good tee time availability for the members even when competitions are played.

We currently offer a 30 min assessment lesson for only £9.99 which allows me to identify your faults
