I don’t know about you but I am getting a bit tired of all the politics just now. It does just seem to go on and on sometimes and I wonder if we will ever get back to just complaining about road and rail like the good old days! I am a sport fan myself and love to dwell on the success or otherwise of sporting endeavour. There is something pure and uncomplicated about winning or losing (or even just competing) in sport which seems to appeal to me. Maybe it’s because there is normally always a result and politics just seems often just to roll on and on - ah well - Hey Ho.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Many years ago, in a land far from these shores — Musselburgh to be precise — I was approached by the East Lothian Courier for an ‘interview.’ The reason for this was understandable. As I was a newly inducted minister and a national celebrity into the bargain (I once played for Ayr United Boys’ Team) they obviously thought that they should be the first to get a scoop. If I remember correctly it was one of those question/answer pieces; the kind where you are asked what is your favourite meal/whisky/tobacco etc. Clearly if I was to undergo a similar exercise today I’m sure my answers might be a tad different from the ones I had chosen aeons ago. Apart from one that is. It was put to me by the roving reporter what my perfect day might consist of and I replied — sitting in front of a peat fire, with a broken phone, (no mobiles in those days), a malt whisky and a good book. As a man of simple pleasures that would be bliss.

What would yours be? Climbing a hill and admiring the views? Watching a good film (well you wouldn’t watch a bad one would you?). Attending an excellent drama production like Murder at Crumbley Down Manor? — a splendid presentation recently performed by the Cullen and Deskford Disaster Theatre Company. There are many pastimes which give us pleasure but what often hinders us is that nagging demonic voice, which often whispers in our ear that we should always be busy. I’m sure it’s not just the Presbyterians who suffer from this dilemma. There are some wonderful stories of Jesus needing to get away from the crowds and spend time on his own or with his closest friends — Luke 5:15-16 ‘. . . crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sickness but Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.’ Mark 6:31 Jesus said to his

disciples, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’ Jesus knew the value of recuperation and relaxation. These were vital to his ministry and state of mind. This quiet place which Jesus often spoke about is time out — time for yourself — time to recharge and take stock — time to just ‘be,’ and that is crucial for all of us. Giving ourselves permission to enjoy this freedom, which is ours, is vitally important for the wellbeing, not just as individuals but for society and should never be taken for granted. So next time you feel the need to unwind because everything is getting on top of you, switch off your phone, kick off your shoes — unless you’re going for a walk outside — and breathe. You’ll be in good company.

Almost a year has passed since I was returned to Parliament as a Green MSP. Since then I have been heavily involved in scrutinising the Scottish Government through my roles on the parliament’s Rural Economy and Justice Committees as well as the sub-Committee on Policing. I have also campaigned on a number of important issues affecting our local communities including concerns around the transportation of nuclear material from Dounreay, via Wick airport and against plans to scrap Highlands and Islands Enterprise’s board. For over a year now I have also supported the campaign against ship to ship oil transfers in the Cromarty Firth, proposals which have the potential to devastate dolphin and other wildlife populations, tourism, our most important industry, if they proceed.

"Like many folk I have recently been enjoying some haggis, neeps and tatties at one of the many Burns Suppers that take place across Moray, Scotland and, indeed, the entire world, in January every year celebrating the life of our national bard. Every year I never cease to be impressed by the local talent here in Moray whether it is from fabulous speakers reciting Burns work to musicians, particularly our young folk, whose skills are quite incredible. Moray has a fantastic depth of talent and many, many willing teachers looking to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. We should be very proud of this talent in our region and the much wider impact that it has! Finally - a quick mention of the Council Elections coming up in May. Whatever choice people make in the ballot box, it is important that we use our vote. Please check if you are registered to vote and, if not, there is still time to do so!"

Parliament was in recess for a week in February which was a good opportunity for me to catch up with casework and meet with people across the constituency. One of the highlights was hosting a visit from the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney. In his role as Education Secretary he met with teachers from across Moray to hear about their experiences and some of the challenges they face. Our teachers do a fantastic job and work incredibly hard and it was great to give them the chance to feedback to the Education Minister directly. Whilst he was here, we also visited the new Glasgow School of Art Campus at Altyre Estate near Forres. It was fantastic to show him the new campus and to discuss the opportunities the campus provides creative industries here in Moray. There’s absolutely no doubt the opening of the campus is one of the most exciting developments in Moray in recent years.

Reader, no human life has been untouched by sin. All need a Saviour and there is only one, not many. There is one mediator between God and men: the man Christ Jesus. To know Him as your Saviour will take the terror away from the grave. To know Him is life eternal. The Lord Jesus is a Saviour, a Deliverer and a Guide. Do you know Him? Do you believe on Him? Will you not come to Him? www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

This month’s recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres. makes around 30 Ingredients: 175g butter 275g Demerara sugar 1 egg 4tsbp water 1tsp vanilla extract 375g rolled oats 140g plain flour 1tsp salt 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda Method: Preheat oven to 180 degrees, line a large baking tray or two. Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl. Beat in the egg, water and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth. In a separate bowl, mix the oats, flour, salt and bicarbonate of soda. Gradually stir the oat mixture into the butter mixture until thoroughly combined. Divide the mixture into about 30 balls, and space them well on the baking tray, Bake for about 15 minutes, or until golden. Once cooked transfer to a cooling rack to avoid cookies sweating. Why not try adding chocolate chips or chopped nuts/dried fruits, or even replace some of the oats with desiccated coconut.

Does My Mower Need Sharpened ? Chances are – yes. I know many of you dutifully take your petrol machines into the local garden machinery place each spring. They will probably change the oil, filters, plugs and sharpen the blades ready for another season. Some do this themselves. I also know however that many machines are long overdue a service. You may find it’s getting harder to start, maybe not, but what is inevitable is that most lawnmower blades only manage a season before the blade is dulled. If you have an electric or flymo type machine, the same applies. On smaller, lighter machines, often a better option is just to change the blade, which at £10-£20 might actually prove cheaper than sharpening. Also, there are many lightweight alloys used in some blades nowadays, which don’t tend to keep an edge as well as heavier metals. When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of any plant provides a weak point, making it susceptible to diseases and moulds. You hear the same advice given for pruning and hedging shears.

My top tip for this month is to get your mower down to the workshop. If you wait until Easter weekend like everyone else, it will sit in a long queue, and you might not get it back for some weeks ! Incidentally, I heard an interesting question on QI last year. Q In the UK, what travels north at 8 miles per day ? A Spring ! (I think the actual measure used was the opening of daffodils, but don’t quote me on that.) Something else of interest; GreenThumb celebrates it’s 30th Anniversary this year. I think (and so does the industry), they’ve done very well to start from scratch back then in North Wales, to grow to be the largest lawncare company in Europe, with over 5 500,000 customers, and still growing. I cant take a we’re quite a small much credit though, as n franchise (award-winning nonetheless), with r around 1,000 customers round here.

For more information tio about our annual lawncare planss fr from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to wnlo www.greenthumb.co.uk. greenthumb.co.uk. Although multi-award winning GreenThumb is a multi-awar national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Music THE DROUTHY COBBLER February saw several sell-out performances at Elgin’s The Drouthy Cobbler - including television comedian Seann Walsh and indie-rock favourites, Hunter & the Bear. As the nights draw out and holidays approach, their events look likely to become busier & busier. This month they have the welcome return of Patrick Monahan for his ‘That 80’s Show’ tour (23rd & 24th). After the huge success of last year’s ‘The Disco Years’, which told the story of his parents meeting in Iran in the 1970’s at the height of disco, this sequel hilariously details what it was like living as an immigrant in Britain after escaping the Iraq-Iran War. Full of his usual funny and heartfelt stories and lots of audience interaction, this will be a great show. Sticking with comedy, Wednesday the 29th is the monthly Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club, featuring some of the best comedians from around the country. March is a good month for music lovers. For folk and trad fans, they are hosting the wonderful Siobhan Miller (5th). Siobhan, performing here as part of her trio, is the only vocalist to have won Scots Singer of the Year at the Scots Trad Awards twice and has also been noted for her beautifully crafted songs. Full of jazz inspired rhythms and punctuated by her fantastic voice, she is not to be missed. For those looking to take a walk on the louder side of things, you won’t be disappointed. Inverness based band, Lional will be showcasing their own unique brand of Indie Noir (17th). After years of touring and building their name across the U.K., last year saw them being invited to perform in Los Angeles, making inroads in a hugely important market. They are supported by Cold Years, a rock and roll punk band from Aberdeen who have become known for their energetic live performances. They end the month (31st) with two of the best up and coming bands from the north of Scotland. Ralia are an Inverness indie band, whilst The Roov are from Lossiemouth. Both bands have been paying their dues by gigging any chance they get, and it’s great to see them getting the recognition they deserve, proving again that the future of Scottish music is in safe hands.

Christian, God's Word must control our lives, not the opinions of those around about us. We are to keep ourselves pure and be not partakers of other people's sins. We are to refuse vain babblings and this world's wisdom, which professes itself to be wise but is in fact foolish and the opposite of Godly knowledge. If you do not promote truth, you will promote error. If you do not defend truth you will defend error. Live for His Will and His Work alone. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290
