(Psalm 52:7)

Reader, is this you? What good is anything, if you know not the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour? All for you is vanity and vexation of spirit. What if you gain the whole world and yet lose your own soul? While you are living in pleasure you are dead in trespasses and in sins, without God and without hope in this world, and yet Jesus Christ died for you. Eternity where?

The Editor

I was challenged about the value of education the other day and came across a couple of interesting quotes: “It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows.” - Epictetus “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” - Aristotle

“Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance.” - Will Durant “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” Mark Twain

What’s on, Clubs, Eating out, Trades Listings and much more...

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings By the time you are reading this, most of this New Year’s resolutions have been dropped by those who tried to change some aspects of their lives for the better. Usual choices are cutting down on substances - alcohol, tobacco and so on - or having a healthy, active lifestyle. Such resolutions require quite a strong willpower, which most of us lack; moreover, physical activities need either the gym subscription or favourable weather. The latter can be in short supply in Scotland. Out of my own experience, bad weather can be an ‘excellent’ excuse for avoiding outdoors unless it’s absolutely inescapable. However, there’s one area for improvement that often is missing from our considerations. In fact, It’s so broad that I can only use examples rather than its exact description. St Paul talked about it to his friend Timothy: Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1st Letter to Timothy 4:14-16) Of course, St Paul referred to a particular gift and ministry.

But we can apply this passage to our own lives. Firstly, what are your gifts, talents, specific abilities? Each and every one of us has a specific set of them. Sadly, many of us are too focused on other people’s apparently better-off lives that we tend to overlook or underrate our own, and to neglect them. This leads us nicely to another important aspect: talents or gifts you have need your diligent attention to develop them and thus yourself. Self-developing talents or self-propelling careers are a myth. In real life they require attention and hard work, usually unbeknown to others. The last but not least aspect is perseverance. Progress is a permanent process. It never stops. It neither gives up in failure nor gets carried away in success. It builds up on achievements and learns from failing. Sticking to the ‘rules’ above can get you to a completely new level of personal development. When I arrived in Scotland, my English was rudimentary at best. I was determined to improve it (that was one of the main reasons for moving here). It has been anything but plain sailing, with innumerable letdowns along the way. But over 10 years later my English it’s massively better, yet still with room for improvement, and I’m still

determined to progress. I used the same rules (recognition, diligence, perseverance) to shed over 3 stone. With usual ups and downs along the way I managed to do so in 7 months, just in time for my friends’ wedding. What you’ve just read isn’t to boast about myself - there’s nothing really to boast about. These are just two imperfect examples that what the Bible teaches can be applied to our lives in their physical aspects as well as spiritual. ‘Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.’ (1st Letter to the Corinthians 6:19-20) St Paul’s call is still valid for you and me. This is our call to develop and progress in every aspect. And, by the way, it’s a great personal satisfaction to level-up. Fr Tad Turski St Peter’s Roman Catholic Church Buckie

When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of Alastair Watt

Barry

Woodward Inspirational Evangelist Free Entry “An amazing true life personal story told in a frank but amusing style” Barry Woodward grew up in Greater Manchester, England. At the age of 16 he left school without any qualifications and was drawn into the drug scene, experimenting with cannabis, amphetamines and LSD. This led to a heroin addiction and life as a drugs supplier. For twelve years he was totally dependent on drugs, during which time he spent a number of terms in prison. Miraculously, his life turned around completely following an amazing sequence of supernatural encounters. Following his rehabilitation Barry has been a banker, had a job in a marketing consultancy, and then a technology company, and then for seven years was the Senior Pastor of the Cambridge Vineyard Church in England and currently spends much of his time visiting prisons to relate his story and pass on his experiences. Barry will talk about his personal encounter with Jesus Christ and offer a message of hope for all. Even if we think our own circumstances have not been as challenging as his, the message is definitely one to be heard by all of us who can admit to finding life a struggle sometimes.

SWEET POTATO & ORANGE WAFFLES When they taste this recipe, no one will think twice about having waffles beyond breakfast again. You'll want these for dinner, lunch, and a late-night snack. The batter is simple—flour, cooked sweet potato, and milk. Orange zest brightens the homemade sweet potato waffles, and cumin adds the perfect savoury note that is versatile enough for different toppings.

Ingredients: ½ cup peeled diced sweet potato 2 cups plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 6 egg whites

1 cup milk ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup melted butter zest of 1 orange

Method: 1. Steam the sweet potatoes for about 15 minutes or until fork tender then mash with a WV[H[V THZOLY HUK ZL[ HZPKL °

2. 0U H SHYNL IV^S ^OPZR [VNL[OLY MSV\Y IHRPUN WV^KLY HUK ZHS[ ° 3.In another bowl combine the mashed sweet potatoes with the milk, brown sugar, butter, and grated orange zest.

4.Stir the sweet potato mixture into the flour mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. 5.Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold egg whites into batter 1/3 at a time (The batter will be thick) Scoop the batter onto a preheated, oiled waffle iron, and cook until lightly browned, about 5 to 6 minutes. If you don't have a waffle iron use a heavy based skillet instead.

Enjoy!

In between wintry weeks, we are getting some definite glimpses of spring with its longer days, emerging bulbs and buds on trees. The growing season is definitely not too far away. Before we know it, the air will hum with the sound of lawnmowers and strimmers being started up for the first time. For now, however, although it still feels as if we are in the icy grip of winter some days, the month of March sees the first of the new growing season’s tasks needing to get done. Let’s go!

DO cut back Cornus sanguinea and Cornus alba. Don’t be shy about it either, you can cut them down hard (to 6-12”) to encourage beautiful winter stems next year. DO plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Alliums and Oriental Lilies. DO lightly hose your beds to disturb any emerging weeds. DO prune Buddleja davidii, again these should be taken down hard. DO prune your bush Roses, and remember the maxim that you should always ‘get your worst enemy to prune your Roses’…..that is to say, you can prune these guys hard too! DO divide any herbaceous perennials and give the clumps away or plant them somewhere else in your garden. You can do this in Autumn too.

DON’T work your beds or walk in them a lot if they are wet, you’ll compact the soil (and also create stubborn muddy footprints on your lawn!) DON’T forget to make sure your ponds are clear of debris, and consider putting pond heaters away once temperatures are high enough. DON’T forget to order your seed potatoes, as they need a chance to ‘chit’ on your windowsill before being planted out. DON’T forget to cut back any growth you’ve left on herbaceous perennials over the winter, including any old seed-heads. Remember to keep the birds fed too, and ensure all your machinery and tools are serviced and have sharp blades. I love this time of year, I’m just itching to get started on some serious graft in the garden! I’ve some interesting garden designs on the go at the moment too, and am looking forward to some more exciting projects this year!

Local Artist

...takes part in TV show

Forres artist Jonathan Luxon will be taking part in the current series of “Portrait Artist of the Year 2018” aired on Tuesdays at 8.00pm, (Sky Arts channel) Jonathan’s heat is scheduled for Tuesday 6th March at 8pm. For those who don’t subscribe to the Sky Arts channel, the show can also be viewed at nowtv.com or with most internet TV boxes.

“My main inspiration has always been the human figure. A friend suggested entering this event. I didn’t take it too seriously at first but he kept mentioning it so I painted a self portrait and submitted it. I was pretty shocked when they phoned back to say I’d been selected. The biggest challenge was how to do a portrait in 4 hours as it usually takes me about 40. I spent a month prior to my heat working on my speed. The filming day was a frantic, hair raising experience, but terrific fun. I learned a lot from taking part. It has really helped develop my painting and I am planning to enter again for next year”. Jonathan studied Fine art in Canterbury from 1993-1996 where he specialised in figurative drawing and painting. He has lived in Moray since 2003 where he has worked as a self- employed portrait artist since 2009. As well as portraiture he has recently been focusing on painting the local landscapes, particularly the Findhorn Bay area.
