I saw a great advert for the Nationwide Building Society the other day which featured a young poet from London and feel motivated to share a few lines from the poem that he recited: “How can you be lonely when everything can be done with a tap or a swipe? Just because you can, doesn’t mean you do. The more you can, the less you’re inclined to do – it’s a funny kind of ruse… Imagine there were no phones, no Facebook, no online – you’d probably find the time to meet up for a cuppa or a schmooze”. It’s two weeks before Easter when I’m writing this piece. Quite likely it’s midMay when you are reading this. In this impossibly quickly changing world any attempt to predict the future is extremely difficult. So, how can I know what is topical now when you are reading this piece? Well, theoretically, I could ask people who claim to have special talents or skills to predict the future. There’s just one problem – the Bible forbids that, as it’s clearly stated in the Book of Leviticus: ‘You must not try to use different kinds of magic to tell the future.’ (19:26) The story of the king, Saul, is instructive too. Desperate before the battle, he instructed his subordinate to find a medium for him; a rather difficult task ,as Saul was infamous for witchhunting. A woman was found, the king went to see her in disguise (quite silly to assume she wouldn’t recognise him in the process), requested her to contact him with the late seer Samuel, only to be rebuked and condemned by his ghost. The First Book of Chronicles summed up the whole adventure explicitly: ‘Saul also went to a medium and asked her for advice instead of asking the Lord.’ (10:13) The king died in the battle the
following day. However, I wouldn’t seek anyone to predict the future because I don’t believe it is possible – and my religion has nothing to do with such disbelief. It springs from my non-religious conviction that my future isn’t predetermined, written in the stars, the book of life or whatever poetic phrase you’d like to use. I do believe that my future is only partially determined by my ‘conditions’, like I will not get pregnant as my male body isn’t made for it. It’s neither predestination nor clairvoyance – it’s biology. I do believe that my future is the product of my own decisions and actions; of other people’s decisions and actions affecting me directly (e.g. when ran over by a car) and indirectly (e.g. elections); and - last, but not least - by natural phenomena like storms, earthquakes or illnesses. I have full control over my actions, limited control over other people’s, and even more limited over natural phenomena. However, I can take control over how to react to those ‘uncontrollable’ happenings. To summarise: I’m in charge of my future, with my brain power and the ability to make my own decisions.

Doesn’t God know everything, our past and present as well as our future? And if so, how are we free to make our own future? It’s a darn difficult conundrum… Or is it? Here’s a bit of a simplistic example, based on my hillwalking experience. When I’m standing on the top of a high mountain I can see much more than people at the foot; their view is obviously obscured in one direction by the mountain. If there’s pouring rain moving towards them from the other side of the mountain, they cannot see it. At the same time at the top of the mountain I can see both the people and the rain going towards them. Judging by the directions of the wind and the movement of the rain I know their future – they will be soaked (as will I a bit earlier than them). As God lives beyond time there’s only now to God; there’s neither the past nor the future, only the present. A prayer then is like a call from the people at the foot of the hill to me at the top: ‘What’s the weather looks like from there?’ Sometimes you can get answers. PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES MY FIRST CAP FOR SCOTLAND
On Saturday 11 March, at Richmond Rugby Club in London, I made my debut playing rugby for Scotland, albeit representing the Scottish Parliament in the Parliamentary 6 Nations. Our opponents were a team representing the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and I am delighted to be able to write today that we came away victorious on a scoreline of 17-0! As the only woman playing on either team, my presence seemed to confuse some. The referee gave me the choice as to whether the game would be played with full contact. Obviously, I opted for that – if you get one chance to tackle some MPs and Lords you take it! I played on the wing and despite coming close on a few occasions, I didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet myself. But I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I loved representing Scotland and I look forward to the next game against the Dail and Seanad team on 13 May in Edinburgh. Hopefully I can convince some more women to tog out for that game.
It has been an incredibly busy month with the Council elections on Thursday 4th May. I’ve been out and about throughout Moray with the SNP candidates, meeting voters and hearing about the issues that matter to them. Whatever happens when the votes are counted on the 5th May, there will be huge changes in the Moray Council, as half of the councillors elected in 2012 step down, including a number of my own party colleagues. Gary Coull, Pearl Paul, Mike McConachie, Kirsty Reid, Mike Shand and Margo Howe have all decided to step aside to make way for new faces. I want to take this opportunity to thank them for their years of service and dedication to their communities. Being elected is a huge privilege and I know that they have given it their all, over the last five years. I wish all councillors – across the political divide who are standing down – the best for the future. Richard Lochhead MSP There is no blog this month from Angus Robertson MP

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
Protect the Bees - New Regulations for Weedkill Spraying We are now into the weed emergence period of the year. They usually come up in a lawn in 2 waves. First to show are daisies and dandelions, but clover and buttercup don’t really flower until June. Weed control by herbicide spraying is most effective when the weeds first appear and put on vigorous growth in the spring and early summer. The growth slows as the season wears on, and the weedkill becomes less effective. We have always blanket sprayed lawns for weeds in the first half of the season, then spot sprayed as required towards the end.
for every application on every lawn. We are no longer blanket spraying every lawn, but target spraying when that is adequate to treat the weeds that are present. Most of our established customers actually have very few, if any weeds, but new customers do still usually need more invasive spraying initially. The overall aim is to limit any adverse effects to pollinating insects by reducing the amount of herbicides going into the environment, which can only be a good thing, if it is done properly.
Those who spray weedkill professionally are required to undertake courses regularly to keep up to date with the latest legislation and safe application and handling guidelines, and obtain national accreditation. GreenThumb are the largest lawncare company in the UK by a country mile, and we have to renew our crop-spraying certification every 3 years. In the last couple of years, there has been widespread coverage in the media worldwide, about indiscriminate spraying of herbicides possibly affecting pollinating insects, notably bees. Much research has been conducted, and is still ongoing, but interim changes to products and practices are now coming through thick and fast. This is affecting both agriculture, and the much smaller horticulture sectors. GreenThumb for instance, now use a more sophisticated product that costs twice as much as before, and have to keep a log of the amount used
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just ÂŁ11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Entertainment
THE DROUTHY COBBLER
It’s been a busy Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, and now we head into the Summer with some of the best music & comedy from around the country, performing live at The Drouthy Cobbler Music lovers have another great selection of performers this month, starting on the 17th with American singer-songwriter Lizanne Knott whose smoky and entrancing vocals have captivated audiences all over the U.S and Europe. Originally from Inverness, Glasgow-based alternative band, Schnarff Schnarff (19th) will be there to impress you with their unique brand of ‘staccato grunge pop’ and will show you why they are one of the most talked about up-and-coming bands on the UK music scene. They will be supported by fellow Highland bands, Silver Coast and Forgetting the Future. The 28th sees Glasgow singer-songwriter Matt Hickman, better known as Brownbear, coming to the Drouthy. With his music being described as having an alternative folksy vibe, but full of fire, Matt has an extremely emotive and powerful voice. He commands your attention from the first song, and keeps it for the duration. One not to be missed. Brownbear will be supported by local singer, Calum Jones. The monthly Comedy Club (31st) will once again feature the best in Scottish comedy. Featuring a variety of styles and acts, it is fast becoming a staple part of the North of Scotland‘s entertainment scene. Please be aware that some material might not be to your tastes. The 3rd sees the triumphant return of Glasgow’s Scott Gibson. Highly regarded amongst his peers as being one of the absolute best comedians working in Scotland just now, Gibson has played the Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club on multiple occasions. Last year, he did a Fringe preview for his one man show, ‘Life after Death’. A hilarious and moving tale of his brush with death at a young age, it showed just how good he is at crafting a show and keeping audiences engaged. He then won Best Newcomer at the Fringe, followed by a run of sell-out London shows, and is back to take the full show on the road. The most natural successor to Billy Connolly’s style and humour, Scott Gibson is definitely one to watch for the future. Don’t miss out on a great show!

Lost Sock Board
You will need... 1. Choose your text 2. Wooden Board (any size you prefer) 3. Paint (your favourite colour) 4. Clothes Pegs 5. Hot Glue or Screws 6. Picture hooks
Method First print out your text to use as stencils later. Next paint your board with your favourite colour! (remeber to paint the back, bottom and sides!) Then cut out your text to create stencils with them, then tape them down on to the board, outline with a pencil and freehand paint them on. Next attach your clothes pegs!, you can either use a hot glue gun or screw them in for a better hold, (Remember not to use too much glue as this can make the glue break off!) Now hang up your lovely new Lost Sock Board to help those lost socks find their sole mate again!

Words by the Wayside "Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you...to bring you near to Himself." (Numbers 16:9)
Christian, the Lord wants to take everything away from you that is displeasing to Himself and is no good for you; you must be willing to give them up. Christians are people called out from the world and called into fellowship with their Lord. Entire separation to God is the divine standard. Don't be half hearted or double minded, walk worthy of your Lord and according to His mind alone. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

Local Singer /Songwritier Success Abi Rooley-Towle is a local singing and music teacher who teaches freelance at home with the world recognised Kodaly method. The KODALY approach is recognised as one of the leading approaches to music education, combining progressive, well grounded holistic learning in a child centred fun way. Abi specialises in children between 3-12 ( and adults who have missed out) teaching them to sing in tune, sight read music, love music, sing rounds and duets and develop a firm musical understanding which then allows future development to be easy and full of confidence and joy. She also is known for her person centred approach, tailoring lessons to exactly suit the needs of the student in front of her. Confidence, enjoyment and progressive achievement are qualities that her pupils ascribe to her lessons. She teaches singing, recorders and flute with this approach. But, this is not the only musical endeavour she is busy with. She is developing as a singer songwriter quite by chance, and wishing to also use it for humanitarian causes. Four years ago she wrote one song, placed it in an international songwriting competition and was amazed when it was awarded a semi finalist position. Two years ago, having written a few more songs, she decided to see if this could become part of her professional life. She contacted one of the producers who had been part of the competition and asked if he would mentor her. He agreed to this, and after listening to a number of her tracks, he said he would like to produce her....the only thing was, he was in Canada. Abi contacted Creative Scotland and asked for their help and they suggested she find a British producer and to come and make contacts at the Annual Expo North in Inverness 2016. Meanwhile the Canadian producer( who has produced grammy award winning artists) showed her songs to an American manager who then Facebooked her and asked if she would like to come to America on tour! At this point, Abi had only performed in front of the mums and kids that she teaches...so this felt way out of her league! He agreed to manage her from the ground up, and together they made a plan of what success would look like for her. At this point she had just gone to the Expo North and was amazed that three producers expressed an interest in her. She has since made links with one who is encouraging her first to get performance experience, develop as an artist, become acquainted with music online and develop a host of practical contacts and skills.....this is the current process she is working through. The American manager suggested she put a song in a humanitarian arts competition run by World Citizen Artists, who create positive change in the world by using art and music to help the causes of world peace, poverty, climate change....Their competition had the theme of children and hope and Abi, purely by chance had written a song that completely fitted these credentials. She had written a song called "When a child stands alone", inspired by the abandoned and parentless children in Europe who have fled the Syrian crisis. Their plight is tragic - at that point 27000 children were alone and parentless in Europe as a result of the crisis and of that number 10000 had simply disappeared..... Utterly horrified, she wrote a song about these children. This song was entered into the competition and from around the world, 10 winners were picked. Abi was awarded 6th place, the rest of the musicians who won are all professional recording artists who tour and make, albums....and then there was Abi, mum and music teacher from near Forres, who recorded her song in her guitarists shed!

This is a huge accolade and Abi hopes it will not only help her emerging songwriting journey, but that it can also be used by World Citizen Artist to further their cause. This year they are helping two charities, one in Guatemala to help educate the "rubbish dump children" whose families make their living from the rubbish dumps and also a charity in Africa which helps children /child soldiers effected by war. Abi was the only musician from Scotland to be picked, which puts Scotland and Moray on the map as a place that encourages its artists to think globally and see how their talents can be used to not just benefit themselves and the local area, but also folks around the world. You can follow Abi on soundcloud under her full name; Abigail Rooley-Towle. Her style is a unique mix of folk/world music with her own individual twist and approach, often using unusual and interesting instrumentation to enhance the lyrics which are a key element in her songwriting.

Reader, you are a sinner by nature, you were born that way because Adam sinned against God. You are a sinner by practise because you live your life in a determined, independent and deliberate manner, having no time for God or His Son Jesus the Saviour. You are your own God, setting your own standards and consistently doing that which is right in your own eyes; you condemn yourself. I say therefore unto you, you shall die in your sins, unless you repent and receive Jesus Christ God’s Son as your Saviour.
