From time to time I catch hold of a wise phrase or two.
Below is a quote from Michelle Obama (wife of President Barak Obama for those with short memories!) You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world's problems at once but don't ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own. Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Psalm 95:1 O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! From a young age, music was a large part of my life. I formed my first rock band in my mid-teens. I remember our first gig in church, I’m sure it sounded dreadful, but the band members felt truly alive and excited by the dream of superstardom (which of course never happened). As the years passed I have had the privilege of playing in front of crowds of a few thousand and also less than ten, each time the excitement has never dimmed. Whether it is playing in rock bands, duets, worship teams, folk groups or as a church organist, the past forty years of music have enriched my understanding of God and the world around us. There is something quite simple about the structure of music, and yet it can produce vastly complex and varied emotions that calm, excite, bring you to tears or cause you to shout with passion from the rooftops. By the way, the first mention of music in the Bible occurs in Genesis 4 where we are told that Jubal was the ancestor of all those who play the pipe and the
lyre…Rock On Jubal ! It is the variety and harmony that is formed by musical notes that I cherish the most. The most basic chord is formed of three notes, played together they form a harmony…when you add more notes, the sound is enriched further, it changes and can soar in another direction, the change of chord can change the mood of the music to reflect the mood of the composer, the performer and the listener. These three, working in some kind of symbiotic harmony. One creating, one giving, one receiving. We baptise people in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, another set of three. I never claim to fully understand the true nature of the trinity, but I do accept it’s reality. Richard Rohr, an American Franciscan Friar, wrote a beautiful book called The Divine Dance. In his introduction he says: “Whatever is going on in God is a flow, a radical relatedness, a perfect communion between Three - a circle dance of love.” He also says the best way to begin to understand this relationship is to join in with the dance. To add our note to the Divine chord if you will. Playing music has been one of my ways of joining in with God’s dance, to

experience rather than to watch from afar. To partake of the Divine work of God, to be excited and moved and inspired by the Divine Trinity. I’ve often used the phrase, “God is Real”…not because of believing in an abstract set of principles but because of a genuine experience of the Divine nature of a creative God. It is a relationship and experience that has enriched my life beyond anything I could possibly have imagined, and because of that I wish to share that experience with others, that they too may experience God through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit for themselves. I invite everyone to metaphorically, pick up their musical instrument and join the rest of the band on the stage… you’ll not regret it !!! Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. Parliament Blog & Tide Times As this is my first spotlight article since the birth of our baby son Alistair, I wanted to thank everyone who sent on their best wishes and congratulations to Krystle and I. As was reported at the time, I benefitted from the proxy voting procedures, and even though I qualified, I wasn’t allowed one on the first day as Parliamentary procedures dictate you must give 24 hours-notice to apply. While I may be many things, I’m not psychic and I was unable to predict when Krystle would go into labour. Some people have suggested I should have applied in advance of the due date to cover all eventualities, however, male MPs are only given two weeks paternity leave and there would have been a risk that I could have used all my paternity leave waiting for baby Alistair, and by the time he arrived, I would have been heading back to Westminster. I’ll always be grateful that I was able to make it back to Moray in time for his birth and spend the first two weeks with him and Krystle. We were also extremely fortunate to be able to have Alistair at Dr Gray’s where the midwives, doctors and nurses were outstanding and a credit to their profession and our area. It reinforces my belief that we need the maternity unit in Elgin back up and running at full capacity as soon as possible to allow many more Moray families to benefit from their great care.

We have all been waiting with bated breath for the rollout of superfast broadband to all homes and businesses for a long time. A reliable internet connection is regarded by many of us as the fourth utility and whether it is moving more of your business online, accessing learning materials or downloading the latest film or box set, much of what we want to do on the internet now requires superfast broadband. We need the Scottish Government to sign the contract for the rollout now if they are to deliver on their promise that all homes and businesses will have access to superfast broadband by March 2021. Everyone welcomes that target and I will press the Scottish Government to ensure their promises on rural broadband are delivered.

I’ve been doing all I can to support the campaign for a new Health Centre for Keith – raising it at every opportunity with NHS Grampian, as well as having discussions with Scottish Government colleagues. It’s good news that Keith has been identified as NHS Grampian’s top priority for replacement in Moray and I am delighted that a project manager has now been appointed. There is strong support in the community for a new health centre and the patient participation group have worked tirelessly on their campaign, making a strong case for a modern, purpose built facility. Now that we have a project manager in post to take forward plans we will hopefully be able to focus minds on the next steps and developing a good business case for a new facility. The appointment is a big step forward and although we have a long way to go, I have no doubt this progress will be welcomed in the community.

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.
program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting activities, play and positive experiences. Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.
Worried about a loved one and their substance use? Friends, family or others connected to an individual
nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.
Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment
a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey. We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.
Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

Turriff During May... a feast of FUN!! A warm invitation is extended to everyone to head to Turriff this May Day, Monday May 6th, from 10.00am – 4.30pm, to help celebrate this the 32nd Turriff May Day Spectacular. Once again, this lovely, vibrant thriving and Britain’s most Beautiful High-Street Award-Winning Town Centre will host the colourful annual spectacle. The Town Centre will yet again be transformed to mark a day that has been recognised by people the world over since 1886, when it was known as “Labour Day” to mark the beginning of the 8-hour working day.
Winning eateries’, shops and hotels, all of which will be open for business and will have special offers on the day. Perhaps best to book in advance should you have a preference for a particular establishment to guarantee you a sit-down meal in the comfortable and welcoming surroundings of the eatery of your choice.
Weather permitting, we expect it to be another roaring success as Turriff’s May Day is a fantastic day out for the whole family to enjoy. Alongside the many stalls selling a variety of goods there will be entertainment all day, with music provided by the award winning Turriff and District Pipe Band and Turriff Silver Band. And of course, Deveron FM will be there to keep the day moving along. There will also be a display of Highland Dancing from our young dancing stars from the Mary Aitken School of dancing who wish to showcase their talents. Other attractions will be Dean Spruce, a local Magician and children’s entertainer who will be on hand throughout the day with various performances.
As the week commencing 6th of May coincides with the British Red Cross’s special “Red Cross Week” our local shop here in Turriff will have many special offers both in the shop and out on the street too. They hope to be encouraging people to help the fund raiser for this special week, showing the rest of the country just how generous the people of Turriff & District can be.
Along with the usual fun fairs and inflatable slides, this year we have not one but Two Firsts for Turriff, our first, First, is we have the addition of a Mechanical Trampoline, and Bumper Cars. From bags to riches… Slimmers go for gold and raise £3450 donating the clothes they’ve slimmed out of So confident they’ll never need their larger sizes again, slimmers across Cullen, Buckie and Fochabers have raised £700 cash on the day of the event and donated a further 110 bags worth around £2750 of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to Cancer Research UK.
The Slimming World groups had a Clothes Throw Day, in Buckpool Golf Club (who donated the venue for free) where they collected clothes, shoes, homeware and accessories as part of the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw. The bags were donated to local Cancer Research UK shops in Elgin as part of the national fundraising campaign, which this year goes ‘gold’ as Slimming World celebrates its 50th birthday year. As part of the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw, anyone who finds a special golden bag is in with a chance to win a VIP shopping and makeover experience. Karen Hanover from Buckie, Carol Sievwright from Cullen and Karen Forbes from Fochabers groups all found Golden bags. The Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw aims to raise awareness of how keeping a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer. Each of the filled bags is worth around £25 to the charity, and this year’s campaign is aiming to beat the total raised in 2018 – an incredible £3 million in just two weeks. Since 2012 the partnership has generated more than £12 million worth of stock. As well fundraising, the partnership between Slimming World and Cancer Research UK aims to raise awareness of the links between obesity and cancer. Dawn Forbes and Sarah Dougan, who run the local Slimming World groups, are delighted to have raised so much money for charity. Dawn says: “I can’t quite believe how many bags we managed to collect – and the fact we found some gold ones too, I can’t wait to see if any of our members are winners! I know our members are amazing but I didn’t expect such an incredible level of effort – wow!” “Seeing members donate their too-big clothes is just the cherry on top for us as Consultants. What I find so special is seeing members transform before my eyes as they lose weight. Many go from shy, apprehensive individuals who join with their confidence at rock bottom. They don’t believe they could ever lose the weight they dream of losing. When I look them in the eye and tell them they absolutely can be the size
they want to be – whatever that is – and that I truly believe in them, things start to change,” said Sarah. “At group, members learn to remove feelings of guilt around food, and instead feel empowered by all the Free Food they can enjoy on Slimming World’s healthy eating plan, Food Optimising. Through Food Optimising, they learn to change the way they think about food by making changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, and they lose weight without ever feeling like they have to restrict a thing or go hungry. “Members also make friends in group, they celebrate success together and they are there for one another through the more challenging times too. As the weight drops off and the energy levels soar, many of them become more active too – walking, swimming, playing with the kids… there really is no stopping them! They shed the shackles of their former selves – including the clothes they’ll never fit in again too. “So many people don’t know how much of a difference losing weight can make to health – including reducing the risk of developing a range of problems including some types of cancer. Hopefully this campaign and our efforts for charity will help inspire more people in Moray to improve their health and change their lives by losing weight too. We are so proud of our members and their efforts. They really do put their heart into everything they do. Whether it’s their weight loss, supporting each other each week or raising money for charity... they continually blow us away!” Anyone who would like to find out more about Slimming World or the Big Golden Slimming World Clothes Throw is invited to get in touch with Dawn Forbes on 07763032849 or Sarah Dougan on 07872474544.
