The 2014 Commonwealth Games baton left Buckingham Palace a few weeks ago and has now started a worldwide trek around many of the Commonwealth nations ending up in Glasgow next June. I was surprised recently to learn that there are currently 53 independent sovereign states that are members of the Commonwealth with a further 7 waiting for acceptance. Quite a structure!

REAP – Help to Get Ready for the colder Weather… Are you worried about how to pay your heating bills as the weather gets colder? REAP, the Keith-based charity, are running a project funded by Comic Relief throughout Moray, helping people, especially older people, tackle their energy bills. REAP offers confidential and impartial advice on insulation, grants, the Green Deal and benefits, plus help setting up fuel clubs to bulk-buy domestic heating oil. “We are happy to give advice over the phone or face-to-face”, said Barrie Wink, REAP Project Worker. “We can also help people access other help, for example from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or their landlord. If you or someone you know are struggling with fuel bills do get in touch”, he said. Call REAP on 01542 880200 or e-mail info@reapscotland.org.uk
PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS What is the question we often ask a neighbour or a friend when we bump into them in the street? It’s normally, ‘How are you?’ And the answer invariably is; ‘I’m fine.’ Even though the person replying might have had an awful day, or received bad news or just struggled to get out of bed. ‘I’m fine’ is often meaningless and trite. However such an expression even gets a mention in the Bible (2 Kings 4:8-37). Elisha was a wandering prophet who predicted that a woman would fall pregnant and give birth to a healthy son. She did but, as a youngster, the boy became ill and died. As the woman rode out to meet Elisha, she was met by the prophet’s servant who asked her, ‘How is it with you and your husband and your family?’ And her reply? ‘Oh we’re doing away nicely, we’re all fine!’ The son that she hoped for, believing that she would never have, is now lying in his bedroom, apparently dead, and she replies, ‘I’m fine.’ A similar story is discovered in the New Testament. Jesus is approached by a Jewish official who tells him that his daughter has just died, but he believes that Jesus
need only touch her and she will come to life. (Matthew 9:18-26). Whatever you make of this encounter, it is enough for Jesus to have enough compassion for this man that he accompanies him back to the house. There he is greeted by the professional mourners and he tells them that the little girl is not dead only sleeping. They laugh at him – they know a dead body when they see one. Nevertheless Jesus goes into the girl’s room and takes hold of her hand and she gets up. Two stories separated by thousands of years but at the heart of these events are two men – Elisha and Jesus who showed enough care and compassion and love for parents who believed they had lost their child. Were the children sleeping or had they died? Does it matter? Answers on a postcard and send them to the Editor. The Church must surely be a community where the great question IS NOT – are you a member? Or are you giving enough? Or heaven forbid – are you saved? The great question we should all be asking with feeling is; ‘Is it well with you and your loved ones. Are you OK?’

Jesus and Elisha and so many great men and women in our history weren’t interested in the proper way of doing things – they got things done because they cared for God’s Family, especially those who had noone to speak up for them. Of course this did mean that others – often those in power – religious and political power – got upset. The task of any Church is to show the human face of God to the world and never to let the so-called progress and technological advances of our society harden our ears and hearts that we no longer see the suffering in our society.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES
“
Parliament Blog
Everywhere I go in Moray people are asking about the Independence Referendum set to take place next year. Whether it is in the pub, in the supermarket or just walking down the street it is the subject many, many people want to ask me about. It is great to see people excited about the debate and asking questions about a decision that will for most be one of the biggest they make in their lifetime. I was out in Elgin’s newest pub, the Drouthy Cobbler, recently and, again, it was the subject that came up in almost every discussion. It is great to see people so engaged about the issue and really thinking about what they want for the future.
”
October saw the 100th anniversary of the National Farmers Union and I was absolutely delighted to join NFU members in Norah to celebrate what is a long and proud history of an important rural organisation. I regularly meet NFU representatives and members as I travel around Moray. it is great to join in the celebrations of this significant birthday and wish them continued success for many more years! Dunlop’s Motor Factors - a local business with national clout
Dunlops Motor Factorʼs and Autostore (owned and run by Andy Dunlop himself) is one of the best known one-stop car shops in Moray. Dunlopʼs is a family run business that puts the customer first. Established in Forres some 12 years ago it is constantly investing in expanding its ranges of stock by establishing trade contacts throughout the UK. This enables them to offer an unrivalled combination of choice and quality at prices that are hard to beat.
The last 18 months or so have been a particular trial for Andy and his team. Improvements to the A96 West of Forres and ongoing Flood Alleviation works have brought a pretty steady stream of large building and construction work traffic together with the associated noise and dust. But, through it all, Dunlops have continued to offer the value for money alternative to its customers and fortunately there now seems to be “light at the end of the tunnel” (although in this case itʼs a road!). All works are due to be completed in early 2015 although there are murmurings that the project may be ahead of schedule. Once finished Dunlops will have a significantly improved direct access to the A96 and be more convenient for all concerned. Till then the team soldier on! AUTUMN
WINTER
Now is the time to have your lawns expertly prepared for Winter and the new growing season. Hollow Tine Aeration and Scarifying are best done at this time of year - From Autumn onwards. Hollow Tine Aeration Removes cores to de-compact the soil (after possibly heavy traffic through Summer!!) Tining allows water, nutrients and oxygen to reach the root zone of the grass plant more easily. Deep Scarifying Will thin out and remove much of the thatch and moss which has built up over the season giving room for new shoots to grow and spread in the Spring. We clean up and remove all the waste after scarifying or hollow tining your lawn Autumn Treatment Programme Our renowned Autumn/Winter treatment formula slowly releases nutrients through the winter, feeding and strengthening roots, maintaining the lawn's deep green presentation with our moss controller, if required.
