Someone asks - how is it that the US, one of the greatest “Superpowers” of the day, have ended up with Trump and Clinton. This set me thinking. How indeed I thought. Maybe we have all missed something, maybe the process of democracy, as potentially flawed as all systems of democracy are, have delivered up these candidates precisely because it can. I asked myself whether we might ever see the like in the UK and my mind turned back to some of our previous leaders and if we look hard enough there are quite a few “characters” among them. Food for thought perhaps?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Once upon a time there were two irreconcilable factions. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:4-7) The result of the Brexit referendum surprised many, even those who had voted to leave the EU. For many, it created uncertainty about the future. Some people tried to present the result in binary fashion, either as a completely positive outcome or as a total disaster. The reality is, of course, much more complicated and nuanced than that. As with any other big political shift, the significance of this vote will probably become clear only to posterity. For us today, however, it’s yet another twist and turn in the history of which we are part. We may feel that it’s not possible for us to have any impact on those political and social processes. But in fact we are not only affected by them, we also affect them in our own individual way, and consequently we change the course of history just a tad. Father Tad Turski Saint Peters RC

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES I’m delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to this edition of Spotlight as one of your regional MSPs. I was elected in May and cover the entire Highlands and Islands region which includes Moray. Tea in the Park at Glenlivet Hall was one of my highlights this summer. Every day through August you could get an excellent lunch or tea and cakes made by the volunteers with all the proceeds spent locally. The day we went, there was a large group in, so the only tables left were outside. My peanut and broccoli soup was outstanding and made all the better by eating it al fresco in Speyside! I hope whatever you did over the summer you had a good time. Now we’re well into the autumn, the few days of sunshine we had are a distant memory!
I recently had the great pleasure of meeting organisers and runners at the weekly Elgin Parkrun to mark the 12th Anniversary of the parkrun movement. Hundreds of parkruns take place around the world and in Elgin alone over 100 volunteers help to make it work for the now well over 1,000 people who have taken part. It is a fantastic way for folk to improve their fitness with like minded people with feeling self-conscious and meeting other folk. "There are walkers, joggers and runners taking part with the aim being improved health and wellbeing. A great initiative right on our doorstep….and it’s completely free to join in! Check it out online at: www.parkrun.org.uk/elgin.

Douglas Ross MSP LOW TIDE TIMES FOR BUCKIE IN NOVEMBER
Each year myself and Angus Robertson hold a Christmas Card competition for children in Moray to take part in, to raise money for a nominated local charity. This year our nominated charity is Moray CLAN Cancer Support with kids being asked to design a card with the theme of ‘Welcoming’. Welcoming is very much a part of CLAN Cancer Support’s work with those affected by a cancer diagnosis and the family and friends who support them during that time. CLAN do an amazing job with the dedicated staff and volunteers at their office in Elgin and in the outreach work they do throughout the Moray area and I’m delighted that we’re able to support CLAN Cancer Support through our annual competition. If you have children or grandchildren who’d like to enter our competition the deadline for entries is the 18th November and they can be sent directly to our offices at 9 Wards Road, Elgin, IV30 1NL.

A Special “Highland” Moss Do You Have This ? I need to talk today about “upright moss” or “tufted moss”. Many lawns in this area have patches of this, as well as the usual “cushion” moss. It is well described in gardening books and magazines, and on the internet. It is a difficult moss to treat as it has roots, not unlike heather, rather than a moss which grows from spores like the usual stuff. This means that a regular moss treatment, usually containing iron to de-hydrate and blacken the top growth, therefore killing it prior to it being raked out or scarified, doesn’t actually finish the job. It still blackens the top-growth, but doesn’t kill the roots, so it just takes a hit, and carries on growing, leaving a disfiguring blackened patch, with new growth coming through. It also doesn’t rake out or scarify very successfully as it has a good grip of the ground.

competition offered by stunted, weak lawn grass, usually exacerbated by being habitually cut too short. The remedy suggested is to aerate the ground with a fork or machine, and apply lime to reduce the acidity. This works best in conjunction with a programme of regular feeding of the grass, and crucially, allowing the grass to grow a bit to recover some strength and provide some competition. Don’t cut it short in other words. We typically spend a good part of the winter months aerating lawns and spreading lime on this moss, before beefing up the grass in the spring with a spring feed. It generally takes at least a season to turn around. Very little happens instantly with lawn care !

It also thrives on ground that is poor in general, compacted, and where there is little

SpotLight magazine launches new free online community database www.spotlighton.co.uk Over the last 12 months the SpotLight magazine has been designing and developing a brand new interface for the Moray and Highland area. The website is free to use and free for people to upload their own information. As a user of the site, it is not necessary to register, although doing so will enable the database to localise your information search. Spotlight are pleased to advise that there are thousands of listings already loaded which include detailed information in the following areas: Trades, Clubs & Societies, Restaurants, Things to See & Do, Places of Interest, Useful Contacts etc. More than this though, is the What’s On Diary to which any organisation can upload all of their events for free. Again there are hundreds of entries already in place. The website doesn’t stop there either! In addition there is a brand new interactive recruitment section where once again you can browse current vacancies or upload your CV and have potential employers contact you directly – again this is a free service. Recruiters should note that in the first 6 months of operation SpotLight are offering substantial discounts to the normal rates which in any event are priced very competitively. Following the Light - New oil paintings 4 - 30 October 2016 An exhibition at Moray Art Centre, Near Findhorn About the Artist: I started drawing at an early age. I loved books about the natural world and I used to spend a lot of time copying illustrations of birds and animals. I rarely drew things out of my imagination – I just wanted to recreate what I saw.
self portrait
continued to be my first source of inspiration: The process of turning coloured paint, ink or graphite into the likeness of a living person with their own unique character, individuality and presence has something magical about it One of the challenges of realism in figurative painting is how to keep painting in a direct, confident and spontaneous way without losing the painstaking accuracy of observation needed to get a likeness and a realistic effect. Its easy to get careless in your observation and on the other hand, overly careful and fussy putting the paint on. The right balance requires discipline and a bit of daring at times (some necessary traits for

I have always been amazed and excited by the ability of paint to recreate the illusion of light and form. recipe
Chef’s Confidential
Gluten free chocolate & almond torte This month’s recipe is supplied by The Peppermill Restaurant in Forres and is inspired by memories of childhood. Owner, Sophie Rooke, recalls enjoying this recipe in her youth with tantalising baking smells emanating from the oven. Apart from this, fond memories of licking the bowl clean of the unused mix, means it is still a firm favourite. serves approx 6-8 Ingredients: 600g dark chocolate 1 cup double cream 5 eggs 1 cup sugar 3 cups ground almonds Melt chocolate over a low heat. Allow to cool and then combine with the cream. Beat eggs & sugar until trebled in volume. Add the melted chocolate and cream into the eggs and mix well. Add almonds to the mix and pour into a greased and floured loose bottomed cake tin. Pre heat ove to 180 degrees (fan 160 degrees, Gas Mark 4) and bake until cooked. Please enjoy!! 118 High Street, FORRES IV36 1NP ¬
