As we go to press, the news seems to be full of stories of natural disasters; hurricanes, floods, earthquakes to name a few. It seems a bit ironic to me that the media is criticising the government for not spending enough to help those in danger and yet it was not so long ago, I recall, that the government were being criticised for spending too much on foreign aid and not looking after our own!

I have always been intrigued by Jesus. Jesus has always grabbed my attention, not just because of his amazing teaching or his miracles. But what always interests me is the company which Jesus likes to keep. The religious people of the day called these people ‘sinners’ . Here are just four examples of each one from a different account from the gospel writers. Can I please encourage you to read these accounts from the gospels? Matthew - a tax collector Matthew 9 Legion - a demon processed man in Mark chapter 5 Zacchaeus - in Luke 19 Samaritan woman - in John chapter 4 As you read these accounts of different people, I was wondering if there is anything which strikes you when you read these accounts. Here is one observation I have made from reading these accounts. Firstly, Jesus welcomes the outcast and the marginalised in society. Yet in my

experience when I look at people in society many are fearful of coming into the church because they fear the ‘judgment’ of God’s people. As a pastor, it often breaks my heart when I hear people make comments like ’ Gavin, I like Jesus but I don’t like the church’. Jesus called his followers to ‘Go and make disciples’. How can we follow Jesus’ example? Dare I say, but is it time for the church to keep more bad company? I know I might lose friends when I say this, but too often the church has been snobby- we have put on holier than thou attitudes. But despite our mistakes I still believe the church has a message to tell the world that Jesus loves them so much!. The second observation which strikes me when I examine these texts is that they all had an encounter with Christ. As people encountered Christ in the gospel, peoples’ lives were transformed by

Christ. Let’s look at the people mentioned above again. Matthew – a tax collector became a follower of Jesus and wrote the first gospel. Legion – from being a man feared to a man of faith. Zacchaeus – a thief to being repentant and generous Samaritan women –broken hearted to testifying to the fact that Jesus is the saviour of the world. My prayer too is that you to will allow Jesus to transform your life. The call to follow Jesus is not for perfect people, but for people like you and me - ‘sinners’. The Bible says ‘all have sinned have fallen short of the glory of God.’ (Romans 3:23) . However the good news is ‘God demonstrated his love for us while we were sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Rev Gavin Hunter Buckie Baptist Church

Many issues come across my desk as MP for Moray but one of the most concerning recently has been the temporary closure of the children’s ward at Dr Gray’s. It will no longer operate 24 hours a day meaning children must travel to either Raigmore or Aberdeen if they need an overnight stay. The general shortage of junior doctors and their perceived unwillingness to locate to Moray is at the root of the problem. Once here, people can see the attraction of living in Moray but we need to do more to get them here in the first place. If we are to ensure these changes to the children’s ward are just a temporary measure, we all need to work together to look at how we can attract more professionals to Moray.

I spent the summer months on a surgery tour engaging with many constituents and numerous businesses on the issues that matter most to them. Travelling far and wide across the Highlands and Islands, there were three major issues that were continually on the minds of constituents and businesses alike. Firstly, in every corner of the Highlands there was an ever-growing frustration that the region remains stuck in the slow lane when it comes to internet speeds. Secondly, there are deep concerns over the NHS Highland staffing crisis which is leading to hospital closures as well as fears that proposed redesigns of health services are not addressing local needs. Thirdly, the North Coast 500 has been great boost for Highland tourism; however, it is clear that extra infrastructure is required urgently to cope with the higher volume of traffic on our roads. As the Scottish Parliament returns I will be pushing the Scottish Government every day to improve rural connectivity, address the NHS Highland crisis and upgrade infrastructure on the North Coast 500.

With Parliament back in session in September, I was absolutely delighted to welcome a special constituent to the Scottish Parliament this month. Erin Fraser from Seafield Primary School in Elgin was invited to the Scottish Parliament by Nicola Sturgeon after she chose to write her school report on the First Minister. Erin and her Dad visited Parliament for a meeting with the First Minister and I was delighted to be on hand to take her for lunch and to give her a tour of Holyrood. With Moray being a wee bit of a distance from the Scottish Parliament I don’t get the pleasure of constituents visiting all that often. So it was really special to welcome Erin to Holyrood and to hear about her ambitions of being First Minister one day.

Words by the Wayside “And thinkest thou this... that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

ĂŽ ĂŽ

(Romans 2:3)

Reader, you must understand that you stand before God as a sinner, lost, naked and blind. All have sinned, all need the Saviour, there is none righteous, no, not one. Christ died to deliver us from this present evil world. What will you do with Jesus, which is called Christ? God’s Salvation found alone in His Son is real. God’s Salvation is available to everyone that believeth. Do you believe in the Son of God, who loves you and gave himself for you?

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

October sees a dizzying array of music and comedy make its way to The Drouthy Cobbler’s upstairs venue. The month kicks off with rising Scottish star, Callum Beattie. Playing with big names, including James Arthur and fresh from the release of his debut EP, expect big things from this talented musician. The Drouthy’s music offering continues with the artistic electro sound of The Howl and The Hum, followed by the acoustic bliss of John Smith. Smith has performed alongside the likes of Jackson Browne, Richard Hawley, and Jarvis Cocker. A triple line-up of Huxtable, Twin Heart, and Broadsea on the 13 October, followed by Glasgow-based Tijuana Bibles on 18 October, adds an alt-rock flavour to the month. Their raw, energetic sound is matched by an 8-piece bombardment of good time funkiness as The Oxbow Lake Band bring their upbeat melodies to The Drouthy on October 20th. October’s musical offering rounds off with former members of Scottish cult-folk outfit Harem Scarem, Eilidh Shaw and Ross Martin on 26 October, followed by Trad 5-piece from Denmark, Himmerland, who bring their heady mix of old and new tunes to Elgin on 28 October. Peppering a packed month of music is The Drouthy Cobbler’s monthly comedy club. Always on the last Wednesday of the month, the night features old favourites and emerging talent. On 6th October, the Elgin venue welcomes the hilarious Susie McCabe with her clever and side-splitting new show, Let’s Get Physical, fresh from a sell-out Edinburgh Fringe.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

The Moss Season Approaches ! We live in cool maritime climate, which is ideal for moss to thrive. You cannot change the weather, and you cannot banish moss permanently, but you can control its’ infestation with some basic good husbandry, and a

be done by hand with a spring rake, but some mechanical help is really the best option for anything more than quite a small lawn. You can hire a blade scarifier for the day at some garden machinery centres, but be warned, these are pretty vicious machines and it’s only too easy to “plough” your garden, and then need a new lawn ! An “average” lawn usually takes 2 experienced crew half a day to do with machines and blowers. The best time to tackle this is either side of Christmas. Scarifying is never recommended in the growing season because the very nature of the exercise is pretty traumatic for the grass, and some recovery time is required, during which time it looks pretty shabby. Doing it off-season allows recovery, then you put on a spring feed, and have a season of decent grass to mow. Enjoy !

bit of work. I’m talking about scarifying again of course. This will also be featuring in all the TV gardening programmes and magazines about now, and it is what we at GreenThumb spend all winter doing. We will have 3 heavy blade scarifier machines out clearing (at the last count) 1,000 lawns round here. – oh joy ! Scarifying moss and thatch out is undertaken to clear the lawn surface of all the dead material and moss to allow fresh grass plants to dominate the lawn environment, providing the best conditions for absorbsion of sunlight, moisture and nutrients. If this task is overlooked (or avoided), the following season there is even more build-up, and in no time, the lawn is more moss than grass.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Words by the Wayside “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:18)

Reader, there is but a heartbeat between you and eternity. It is appointed unto men and women once to die, and after this the judgment. All have sinned and all have come short of God’s standard; there is none righteous, no not one. But, praise God, Christ died for the ungodly. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Reader, eternity where?

Potato and Orange Cake Gluten free The wintery season is upon us. For these changing months why not make something homely and comforting for those days indoors for the whole family to enjoy.

Ingredients: 250g butter 1 1/2 cups caster sugar 3 cups ground almonds Zest of 6 oranges 6 eggs 5 cups mashed potatoes 6tsp baking powder Method: Line a 12inch baking tray with tinfoil and then greaseproof paper. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celcius. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Gradually beat the mashed potato into the butter mixture along with the orange zest, followed by the ground almonds and baking powder. Tip into the prepared tin and bake for an hour, checking after 45 minutes. Juice the zested oranges and add 1 cup of caster sugar, boil to form a syrup. Using a cocktail stick or skewer poke holes in the top of the cake and pour the syrup over. Leave to cool and serve with whipped cream.

Enjoy!! 118 High Street, FORRES IV36 1NP

S

eptember is a fantastic time for really getting ahead in the garden. Often when you get the clippers out in the earlier summer months, it seems that things grow back so quickly that you’re chasing your own tail! September is a good time to give your hedges a final cut of the year for example – there won’t be much more growth till next spring, but you’re unlikely to expose the hedging plants to any hard frosts that they’re not going to enjoy over the coming weeks. If you’ve got your clippers out remember that plants are pretty tough things on the whole and, as a very general rule, people tend to be too shy with their pruning. Here are a few DOs & DON'Ts for garden jobs this month –

t DO give any of your hedges a final trim of the year. t DO aerate any boggy patches in your lawn and rake in some sharp sand. Make sure you don't use 'soft' sand (sometimes know as 'builders' sand') t DO apply an autumn lawn feed. This will stimulate your

grass roots, and will not cause vigorous sward growth. t DO add a high potassium feed to beds (like a ‘fish, blood & bone’ mix) to feed your plants’ roots. Be aware that some dogs, especially one in particular (mine), enjoy rolling around in and eating this kind of fertilizer, given half a chance… t DO get some spring bulbs planted, Daffodils and Crocus should ideally go in this month. t DO divide herbaceous perennials.

t DON’T use a high nitrogen feed on your plants or grass. This would stimulate vigorous leaf growth that may get damaged by October frosts. t DON’T cut your grass too short as you get towards your final grass cut, this is to ensure that your grass plants (for that is what each blade of grass is!) do not enter the dormant period while under stress. t DON’T forget to water your plants during any dry spells. Don’t think that just because it is a bit cold or overcast that your plants won’t be missing the rain, even if you’re not! With a bit of luck, as we emerge from the rainy season of August, we will be rewarded with some bright early autumn days when we can enjoy our gardens. Whether that is by having a barbecue, pottering around getting some gardening done, or munching on the last of this year’s fat wild raspberries is up to you. I plan on doing all three! TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT I’M UP TO IN MY OWN GARDEN AT THE MOMENT YOU CAN CHECK OUT MY BLOG (‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’) WHICH YOU CAN FIND ON MY WEBSITE AT WWW.ANGELHORT.COM
