It was my birthday at the beginning of August. My husband Ranald took me out for a romantic meal. Over a candlelit dinner Ranald reminded me that he’d spent so much money on me as his girlfriend that he decided to marry me for HIS money! He does pay me lots of nice compliments, such as, “Kay, if you lived in India, you would be sacred!” Life is too short not to have a laugh with one another. Something which is very clear to Ranald and me is that, whenever we have strangers in the midst of our congregation, be it for a normal Sunday Service, a wedding, baptism or a funeral, many of these visitors are surprised that we tell funny stories about folk (real and imaginary) and we laugh in church! They seem to have missed the verse at 1 Thessalonians 5:16 which says, “Be joyful always!” What strikes us in our visitations of the terminally ill is that it is their sense of humour that helps both them and family members to cope during what is a very difficult time. SpotLight ExTRACTS FROM THE RATiFiED MinuTES OF THE MEETinG OF 17TH MAy 2011 OF BuCKiE COMMuniTy COunCil
Questions • Ms Coverley asked Community Warden Crawford if he knew whether the former night club ‘Clash’, on Cluny Square, was to be reopening as she had noticed workmen employed there recently. His answer was that he had received no notification of this but would try to find out. • Mr Cartwright asked if the police had caught the perpetrators who set fire to the bench in the rose garden on Queen Street Community Warden Crawford said that he didn’t have this information but would endeavour to get it and give the answer at the next meeting of the community council. • The Chairman asked if he could provide any police information of interest to members. He told how a number of houses in the Buckie area had been searched for drugs, while there was an on-going programme to deal with speeding drivers while efforts to combat anti-social behaviour were still high on the police agenda. a.o.c.B. A) Resignation of Treasurer - Ms Coverley intimated her intention to resign from the post of Treasurer as from September; she said that she had every intention, however, to continue as Vice Chairman. B) Resignation of member - The Chairman read from a letter that he had received from Howard Cartwright in which he said that he would be resigning as a member of Buckie Community Council and for different reasons, one that he had sold his house and would be moving south. He said how he had enjoyed his time as a councillor finding the work interesting and wished the council every success in the future. Mr Smith accepted the letter, as he said, with regret but under the circumstances he understood it had to be. He thanked Mr Cartwright for his services as a community councillor saying how he had been a regular attendee at meetings and had played an important part in the discussions that took place. He wished him well. C) Plants for the floral bed at the Toll Bar -
Mr Fraser who was absent from the April meeting of the community council said that he would have agreed with the decision taken that we would not be accepting the plants at the figure quoted as it seemed higher than one would have expected. That day, however, he had again went and removed such weeds as there were and also counted up the number of plants one would require to cover the area and had come to the conclusion at just over 100. He had then asked a quote from a supplier who quoted between £25 and £30 dependant on the plants chosen. A majority decision was taken that the community council was still not prepared to pay this as there were fears that it would be money ill spent if work to create the new gateway was to begin shortly. Mr Fraser accepted the decision but would be keeping an eye on the bed as creeping weeds surrounded it, which would be difficult to eradicate if left to take over for another year. D) Gateway and Woodland Walks - Mr Cowie asked the two Moray Councillors present if they knew when the road improvements, new gateway and woodland walks were likely to be implemented. They said that they would try to find out and report back at the next meeting E) Detailed map of Buckie – All present received a detailed map of Buckie from Councillor McDonald, which had been produced for Buckie Area Forum and the Regeneration Group. The map was artistically drawn though some, it was felt, may complain that the whole of Buckie is not shown. Mr Fraser noticed that Broadley was spelt wrongly; St ninian’s Chapel in the wrong place and thought an important church like Preshome ought to have been included. G) lack of road markings - Ms Coverley said that she had received a complaint regarding the absence of road markings in the area of Portessie including Station Road/Chapel Street/Chancellor Road. This will be reported to the relevant section of Moray Council.
H) Congratulations – Mr Smith said it should be put on record that the community council would wish to congratulate Buckie Thistle on winning the Highland league for the past two seasons. i) Coat of Arms Charter and flag - Mr Smith said that he had received a phone call asking that he bring the charter and flag down, which he had held for some time, down to the Buckie library at his earliest, which he did. Some time later he was in the library and was disappointed to find that instead of being on display as he had imagined they would be found them in the bottom of a glass case all crushed up. (There had been a misunderstanding as was explained to Mr Fraser when he spoke to Mrs Kidd the following day on the matter. She was very apologetic and explained why the flag etc was where it was and what was to happen.) J) Community Council Calendar - Mrs Pitt said how she had now contacted all the schools in the Buckie area concerning the proposed Community Council calendar and to date had received 8 replies. She had decided to contact Play Groups etc., to make it up to 12. it was also decided to let the schools pick the pictures they want published with the community council giving them the month for their theme. This will be discussed at the July meeting. K) Minute Secretary – Howard Cartwright proposed that it might be an advantage to have a Minute Secretary, has received support from Mrs Pitt. no one was otherwise minded. it was agreed that an advert be placed in the Banffshire Advertiser. l) Mr Smith said he received a complaint regarding the water seepage at the Old Station Brae. After discussion it was decided that we would look into the ownership of the banks and that the drainage channel was kept clear as the banks in this area is very wet and unstable. next meeting The next meeting of Buckie Community Council will take place on Tuesday 20 Sept. 2011 in the Town House at 7pm.

“ Parliament Blog ” Since this is the Spotlight first edition since the announcement that RAF Lossiemouth is to continue as an RAF base and Kinloss is to convert to an Army Base, I will use the opportunity to thank everyone in the community - residents, businesses, elected representatives from all parties and none, public sector representatives and many, many
others, who pulled together in an unprecedented show of community spirit.
The summer in Moray has been a bit changeable weather wise but the wetter spells haven’t managed to put a dampner on the many fetes, games and shows that I have been at!
It is, of course, slightly surreal to be talking serious agricultural issues or the impact of the work of a local organisation, then five minutes later getting hit on the hid with an inflatable hammer, won by my eldest son for hooking a plastic duck.
The summer calendar is a bit of a mix of work and leisure with the opportunity to speak to lots of folk but equally a good day out with the family.
We have built enormous momentum and the decision to retain Lossiemouth and have a future army role for Kinloss is vindication of those efforts. We must now take that momentum and continue to drive forward to grow and diversify Moray’s economy. Angus Robertson MP

You may choose to be neutral, but that is delusion. You may postpone decision, so to speak. But, to the ear of God, the postponement is a flat “no.� This is your day. He is in your hands. In God’s day, when you are in His hands, there will be no postponement of sentence, no neutral place between heaven and hell, no mediator between God and man. No mediator - for He who is now mediator has already been appointed to be Judge in that day.

Water babies You will find that there are many benefits and pleasures to be had by bringing your baby swimming at an early age. It is considered that it is appropriate to take a baby to a swimming pool from the age of six months onwards providing that the conditions are right e.g. warm water, adequate changing facilities etc. Health professionals do not consider that the immunisation programme should affect the opportunity to go swimming. However, please remember that the chemicals in the water may have an effect on a very young baby and that the water temperature will chill them quickly. It has been proven that babies who develop their swimming abilities at an
early age are normally very alert for their age and may progress in crawling and walking more quickly. If you start early enough your child will not have had a chance to develop a fear of the water as a baby is naturally at home in an aquatic environment. You will have the pleasure of seeing your child growing into a relaxed and confident swimmer at an early age which will not only make him/her safer playing near water but will prove to be a valuable form of recreation and exercise which everyone can join in on. You will also find the exercise helps your baby to sleep well.

Chef’s Confidential As the nights draw in, this is a great dish that is quick to prepare and can be done in advance, perfect for supper with friends
Prawn and Whitefish Curry 2 Green Chillies 2 Onions - thinly sliced 3cm Fresh Root Ginger 2 dessert spoons Green Thai Curry Paste 400grm can Coconut Milk 1 teaspoon Garam Masala 225grm cooked and peeled King Prawns 500grm firm White Fish (pollock, haddock, cod) 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil 3 teaspoons Tumeric Powder Cut the stalks from the green chillies, slice thinly. If you prefer to have your curry not so hot, de-seed the chillies. Peel the root ginger and shred into fine matchsticks. Place the onions and chillies in a frying pan with the vegetable oil on a medium heat to soften the onions. Add the ginger and curry paste, garam masala and 2 teaspoons of the tumeric. Put the coconut milk into a measuring jug and fill to ž litre with boiling water. Pour the milk mixture into the frying pan and simmer for 10 minutes to reduce slightly. Dice the white fish into chunks, and toss with the king prawns in the remaining tumeric. This can be set aside until you are ready to eat. Just before you are about to eat, heat the sauce up and when simmering add the fish and prawns, cook for 5 minutes until the fish is cooked and the prawns thoroughly heated. Serve with boiled rice. One of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Travel Industry is Cruising. It can be described as living in a luxury hotel, which moves from destination to destination, and there is no need to pack or unpack your suitcases more than once! Fewer than one third of the British population go on Cruises, although it is double that number in the USA. The market has seen steady growth, driven by innovation and the quality of the experience. There are large capacity increases being launched all the time, so what might have seemed like a very exclusive mode of transport historically has become much more available to the seasoned holidaymakers. Born out of the need to take Mail and certain important goods round the world, cruising has evolved from being a byproduct of a necessary industry to an industry in itself. There are still certain types of working boats that will take passengers as well, but the predominance of Cruise liners today are purpose-built and very luxurious. They are large ships with all the facilities, such as sports, health and wellbeing Spa facilities, as well as theatre and cultural entertainment. There is a perception that cruising is very formal and only for the older generation, but that is changing. The average age of Cruising people comes down each year, and ships are coming into service to cater for different needs. Some prefer to do a Fly Cruise, where you join the ship in an already exotic or interesting destination. Some prefer a Fly and Stay, where they join the ship and before or after their cruise they spend some time in that country. Some prefer to depart and return to a home port, negating the need to fly at all. Although the prices sometimes look expensive, you have to remember that all your meals are normally included in the price, and the only things to spend your money on are drinks. Imagine spending a day in an interesting European city, retiring to the ship for dinner and a good night's sleep, and then waking up in the morning in another fascinating destination. That's Cruising!

Bar Tailed Godwit
As Autumn approaches, bird watcher's gear up for a busy time of year and one of the most eagerly awaited family of birds to return, are the Waders. Many of these birds will be here for the whole winter, however, the difference at this time of year is that many will still be retaining their Summer breeding plumage. The two that have probably the most dramatic colour change, is the Bar Tailed Godwit and Knot. Bar Tailed Godwits are a large Wader, about the size of a Curlew and found on sandy stretches of the shoreline where they probe the mud and sand for food using their long straight bill (as opposed to the long curved bill of the Curlew). As these birds arrive from their Knot
breeding grounds in the high Arctic tundra, they form loose flocks of usually between twenty and thirty birds. However, if you visit Findhorn bay you may be treated to flocks in excess of two hundred.
The Knots arrive at roughly the same time and as well as heading for the sandy beaches they also frequent the more rocky sections of the shore. A smaller and stockier bird than the Godwit, its' brick red plumage makes it very obvious against the grey rocks; however give it a few more weeks and it's pale grey winter feathers will blend magically into its' surroundings. Its' much shorter bill, show a different feeding technique also; the Knot probing into shallower sand and picking food from the surface of the sea-weed and rocks. With the Seasons changing so does the birdlife, the first Geese will be arriving on local Lochs and estuaries and the last of the Summer migrants will be heading South to their wintering grounds, with all the upheaval of migration, it's definitely a time to expect the unexpected!
