As we go to press, the news reports are full of stories of displaced people across the globe who appear to be desperate to improve their situation. It to be a genuine appears humanitarian issue with some troubling ramifications if we are unable to respond in a coordinated fashion. Let us hope that ‘the powers that be’ can organise sufficient aid to avoid any loss of life and offer some comfort to those people who have lost or been forced to abandon their homes.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Spiritual eye test It is that time of year for me to make my annual visit to the opticians. I have worn glasses for over 16 years now and I am short sighted. This means I can see objects which are closer in distance - but objects in the far distance are a bit more of a blur.
In Psalm 123:1 the people of God are on a pilgrimage to the temple when David writes, I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. Here David is expressing his total dependency upon God as he leads the people of God back to the temple - the place of worship.
become spiritually short sighted or long sighted.
I thought of how easy it is for us to become short sighted too - where we can be good at seeing obstacles which are in front of us, but the potential obstacles and difficulties in the future are harder to see. Alternatively, some of you here may be long sighted - where you can see potential obstacles and difficulties which might face you in the future but can't see the immediate problems you face.
It is crucial as Christians that we too need to have clear vision to help us face difficulties in the present and give us confidence in Christ to face the future. The Christian must continually remember the instruction given in Hebrews 12:2 to fix our eyes on Jesus. It can become all too easy to turn our eyes of Jesus and onto the things of the world. These things can so easily hinder us in worship and we
May we all continually look to Jesus to guide us step by step as we know He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion.

Perhaps the words of a old hymn sum up my appeal: Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.

Buckie and Keith residents urged to seek energy help and advice from Home Energy Scotland Home Energy Scotland, a free and impartial advice service from the Scottish Government is reminding residents in Buckie and Keith to utilise the service to help cut their energy bills and make their homes warmer. A one-stop shop for advice and support, the Home Energy Scotland Hotline (0808 808 2282) is there to help Scots stay warmer for less. Around a third of Scottish households have already benefited from the only source of clear and impartial advice on how to make your home cheaper to heat. Home Energy Scotland also offers a community liaison service for those who find it difficult to communicate over the phone. Community liaison officer (CLO), Diane Bannerman, explains how the service works. “I may visit a vulnerable client at their home to offer in-depth and bespoke advice to help with their individual situation. The aim is to create homes that are warm and cheaper to heat. I can recommend measures to help a householder do so, based on their property and personal circumstances, as well as facilitate access to grants and funding from the Government to help improve energy efficiency in their home. “When meeting a client for the first time, I need to find out about how much energy they use and how efficient the property is. To do this, I carry out a free home energy report with an energy efficiency rating, as well as provide suggestions on how to better it. Their energy rating can be improved in different
ways such as low cost DIY tips and behavioural changes. This can be learning how to take meter readings, understanding energy bills and comparing utility suppliers and tariffs. “Of course there are more costly measures but often there is financial assistance available to install them and I can help people access that funding. “All this can be done one-to-one, face-to-face with a home visit or in groups at events and workshops. Group sessions can be really interesting and lively as people share their experiences with one another. “I also work on a variety of different projects and deliver fuel poverty workshops and information services to local communities and multi-ethnic groups, all of which helps us work towards reducing fuel poverty.” The Home Energy Scotland CLO service is just one of the many services available. Home Energy Scotland provides services to suit everyone. As well as receiving money-saving energy advice, households can receive information about energy efficiency grants and schemes available from the UK and Scottish Government. To find out exactly what Home Energy Scotland can do for you - whatever your circumstances call 0808 808 2282 or go to www.homeenergyscotland.org.uk . Act now to make your home warmer and help Scotland go greener together.

2015 has been an incredible year, but it has also been a year of contemplation and commemoration. I will note just a couple of those important events here. Early July marked the 20th anniversary of the appalling genocide at Srebenica, where 8372 unarmed boys and men were led out of what was supposed to be the UN protected area of Srebrenica and murdered. The 6th August saw the 70th Anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing which killed tens of thousands of people, the consequences of which are still felt. These appalling events in our history should never be forgotten and are a constant reminder of the potential consequences of the decisions that parliaments and governments take. It is a sombre subject matter for this column but it is vital we remember these horrific events and use them to guide our current and future actions in the issues we deal with where many lives can be at stake.
I’m now back to Parliament after a very busy summer recess in Moray. During the summer break, as well as holding a summer surgery tour and attending community meetings, I enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with my family and our growing puppy, Cinder. Although the weather was far from fair, it was great to get out for walks at the beach and in our lovely countryside. Another highlight of the summer recess for me was the hugely successful Elgin Food and Drink Festival, which attracted a huge number of visitors from far and wide. The Food and Drink festival is a great family day out and a fantastic opportunity for local food producers, of which Moray has many, to reach out to new customers. I know how hard the team at Elgin BID work to make the Food and Drink festival a success every year and they certainly deserve praise for putting on another fab event this year.
