Many of you reading this probably don’t believe in God. You may think there is ‘something out there’ - but in all probability you wouldn’t be prepared to commit yourself to a belief in the personal God of the Bible - the one described as the God who made the world and everything in it. He created all the nations throughout the whole earth, decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations to seek after him and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him - though he is not far from any one of us. The God who is a person - with personality - and who takes a real living interest in every one of us.
cat seems to demonstrate he’s not just a blob of fur but a creature with real personality. He ‘speaks’ with his miaow, with his eyes and with his insistence that he be scratched under the chin.
Even the birds he stalks in the garden reveal individual characteristics. Watching the cat being scolded by a protective mother blackbird - and he running for the cover of the window sill from her rebuke - reminds me that even the smallest of creatures appear to be endowed with individuality and personality. Of course I don’t want to give every
For many people that’s too specific, perhaps too frightening or possibly too simple. But the more I look at the world around me, the more I see personality in almost everything. worm or grub a name but the more I look at the world the more I can see the mark of a person at work in creating it.
That is exactly how Paul described God and his world to a highly educated Athenian audience in the passage from the book of Acts loosely quoted above - a real personal God who made us, a real personal God who continues to relate to us on a personal level every day. Maybe you don’t have a cat to watch or a garden with scolding birds - but there is a God who is not far from you; his purpose and desire is that you would reach out to him, seek for him and find him. He even sent his Son, Jesus, into this world to help you in that search - a real living personality who will introduce you to the real and living God. Colin Morrison Elgin & Forres Free Church

NEW HOMES (Part 2) – Last month I highlighted some of the initial steps in purchasing a new property. This month I will look at the subject of Deeds of Conditions which are usually in place on new estates. When living in a development with a group of other home owners you become part of a community and as such you need to take into account the needs, considerations and expectations of other people as well as not carrying out any activities which could devalue their homes. This is where Deeds of Conditions have developed. As well as granting all the necessary rights for access (pedestrian and vehicular) and services (electricity, water, drainage etc) across and through a development, Deeds of Conditions also include a list of rules (sometimes similar to those of a lease) setting out what you can and cannot do with your property. For example, there could be a prohibition against building high walls around the front garden to preserve the ‘open plan’ feel of the estate, not causing a nuisance to neighbours (common courtesy) or parking anywhere other than in a designated parking area as this may pose an accident hazard or inconvenience other occupiers. Other types of activity may require a home owner to obtain the permission of the ‘factor’ (managing agent) or residuary land owner for example, extending a property or altering the outside of it in any way. Again, the underlying principle is to prevent an owner changing the property so that it is not in keeping with the other properties or which may affect the value or marketability of neighbouring homes. The Deed of Conditions may also identify the ‘common areas’ on the estate such as roads, footpaths and children’s playgrounds etc, for which owners are required to contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of, and set out the basis of the contribution. If you are contemplating purchasing a property on an estate or new development and you would like more information on the legalities please call

ExTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 14TH JUNE 2011 OF THE CITy & ROyAL BURGH OF ELGIN COMMUNITy COUNCIL
Committee Report Recreation and Leisure • Wilma Milne confirmed the Street Name competition involving the schools has now come to a close. It was decided that no particular name could be chosen therefore it was decided that a £20 cheque will be allocated to each school with a letter and a visit thanking them for taking part. It was requested that the Press could include a piece in the forthcoming publications. • The Chairman expressed his regret that this was to be Wilma Milne’s last meeting due to personal reasons of which he was aware and thanked her for her contributions as a valued member. Environment • Greenery - Chairman met with Jacqui Taylor from Elgin Bids and this will be completed very soon. Cllr Russell confirmed that Elgin Bids has selected a contractor and letters have been sent to local businesses. Cllr Divers confirmed that Elgin Bids and a representative from the chosen contractor have been viewing the area. • Posters - Anne Glover has received quotes from the Elgin Copy Shop for the proposed printing of the Notice Board Posters. Current layout would cost 0.85p per copy, if a new layout was chosen it would cost £12 for all 6 copies. Anne Glover has written to the Chief Executive requesting permission to display the posters in the Moray Council notice boards. Anne Glover received a phone call confirming that the notice boards could be utilised but could not guarantee how long they could be displayed. A discussion took place regarding the design and layout of the poster, it was agreed that it needs to be bright and colourful with a bold font. Gordon Methven agreed to take this away and ask a graphic designer to review the design. • Outdoor Access Trust - Anne Glover has received substantially large documents. Expressed concern at the number of
documents being sent out and it is not clear what is expected of the Community Council. • Waste Land near Tesco Supermarket The land near the traffic lights at Tesco; there are two plots of land and Bear Scotland leave equipment on one plot. The grass is very high and full of litter. The Chairman suggested that this could be Bear Scotland’s responsibility. Anne Glover confirmed that she would contact them directly. • Disabled Parking Spaces - Mary Wall has been contacted by a resident with regards to the disabled parking spaces at each end of town being taken away. The hill causes problems for people who cannot walk a distance. It was suggested that the Taxi Rank could be reduced to allow for disabled parking spaces. Cllr Russell explained that the statement provided by Peter Jones, the Moray Council Communication Officer clarified there are now more disabled parking spaces through Elgin and the removal of these spaces at the Plainstones is due to Health and Safety issues. It was suggested that a letter should be sent to the Transportation Department requesting a review of the situation. It was agreed that the Chairman will send a letter asking for a review. • Fair Trade - Mary Wall has written to the Moray Council Convener and Elgin Elected Members asking for support in making Elgin a Fair Trade City, no response has been received at present. Two letters have been received, one from Mark Palmer of the Moray Council advising he is looking into suppliers for the Library and Community Centre café and schools. The second letter was received from the Moray College Assistant Principle, Anne Lindsay who has provided a contact name to discuss the issue with directly. If the Council give support Mary Wall will then proceed with forming a support group to take this forward.
• Cockmuir Place Notice Boards - The Chairman received a letter with regards to utilising the Notice Boards at a later date once the Street Design department is complete. A brief discussion took place and it was agreed that further information is required, such as monies for upkeep, who would be able to access the notice board, maintenance etc. It was agreed that this will be discussed further and the Chairman will seek further information. Roads and Transportation Disabled Parking - The Roads and Transportation Committee did not have any issues with the removal of the Plainstones disabled parking as there are now many more disabled parking spaces available eg top of St Giles multi storey. Youth The Chairman asked Michael Gates if he had heard from Cllr Jeff Hamilton, Michael Gates advised that he had not but would be contacting him over the next month. Tree Ivy – inconclusive outcome and awaiting response from MSP Richard Lockhead. Community Support Unit Support Concerns regarding the reduction of support from the CSU Team. The Chair advised that the Unit had been cut by 50% as per the recent budget cuts. The recent letter received from CSU Manager Ian Todd explained the new strategy and level of support that will be available. The Chairman expressed his disappointment at losing Denise Gormley, CSO. The Chairman has not yet contacted CSU Manager Ian Todd but with the agreement of the members present contact will be made. Harry Torry advised he would be contacting CSU Manager Ian Todd requesting support for the ENAF. Date of Next Meeting Tuesday 9th August 2011 7pm at Moray Council Chambers

One of the challenges of politics is trying to force yourself to take some time out and do something different. Being a bit of a foody, I have made some time for the garden and a bit of an effort at ‘grow
your own’ in terms of vegetables. I cannot profess to being any kind of expert gardener but it provides some relaxation and, hopefully, some tasty summer salads when I see how the small back garden crop has fared! Angus Robertson MP
I was very p l e a s e d recently to take part in the Moray Great Bike Ride, which saw cyclists of all abilities from across the region get on their bikes for charity. I surprised myself by feeling up for the whole course and even in a not too bad time! A big thank you to the organisers but also
especially to the participants. This year’s event raised funds for the North East Sensory Service, which provides support for people across Moray and the North East with visual or hearing impairment. A very worthwhile cause and and very worthwhile day out cycling through Moray’s fantastic scenery Richard Lochhead MSP

Chef’s Confidential Knockomie is fast attracting the walkers, the morning and afternoon coffee and tea customers. This cake is a very popular offering amongst those who want to relax, chat and catch up in a comfortable lounge, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We look forward to welcoming you soon, for a latte, cappucino, espresso, selection of teas and hot chocolate.
120g black treacle 110g golden syrup 110g dark muscovado sugar 230g self raising flour 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda 120g butter diced 1 medium size firm pear 1 ball of crystallized stem ginger 280ml milk 1 large egg 1kg loaf tin lined
recipe
Pear Gingerbread Cake
1. Put the treacle and syrup into a small pan & heat on a gentle heat until thoroughly mixed, leave to cool. 2. Put the Muscovado sugar and milk in a small pan and heat on a gentle heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Once dissolved remove from heat and leave to cool until lukewarm. 3. Place the flour, spices, bicarbonate of soda and butter in to a bowl and with your fingers, or in a food processor, blend to fine breadcrumbs. 4. Peel and core the pear and dice, put to one side. Finely dice the stem ginger and leave aside. 5. Add the milk and sugar mix to the dry ingredients using a whisk to blend thoroughly. Repeat with the treacle and syrup mix, and beat the egg before adding this. Add the stem ginger. 6. Pour into the lined loaf tin and sprinkle the diced pear on the top. It will sink into the sponge whilst it's cooking. 7. Place in the centre of the oven at 180°C (350°F) Gas 4 for 45 minutes to 1 hour. It will be well risen and use a skewer to test the centre to check if it is cooked. It will be ready when the skewer comes out clean. Allow it to cool completely in the tin, before turning out. Enjoy either warm as a pudding with ice-cream or cream, or at room temperature with a cup of coffee or tea. Great for picnics too! Penny Ellis, Owner Knockomie Hotel, Forres tel: 01309 673146

The Moray Coast Motorcycle Club will be holding its 3rd annual Charity Poker Run in memory of fallen bikers on Sunday 7th August, leaving Tom Adamson's, Elgin at 12:30 (meeting/registration from 11:30 to 12:30). Riders will ride to 5 locations along a predefined route of approximately 100 miles. At each stop the rider (and pillion if taking part) will collect a card to form their poker hand then return to Toms to submit their hands. The entry fee is £10 (riders and pillions can both enter), which includes food and refreshments at Tom's afterwards and a free ticket for a raffle, with many great prizes (see below), which have been donated by local companies and individuals. Further raffle tickets can be purchased on the day. (Please feel free to donate a raffle prize) Last years Charity Poker Run had around 100 entrants and together we raised over £800 which was used to purchase four flat screen TVs for Doctor Grays Childrens Ward in Elgin and for a donation to the ‘We are MacMillian’ local branch.

...a city break Popular for some years now, particularly for those whose time is very limited, a City Break is an excellent way of getting away for a few days and nights, and seeing some interesting and different culture. Perhaps the most common City from this part of the world has been Amsterdam because it is accessible in one flight from Aberdeen, but there are many European cities which now see large numbers of short- term visitors. The advantage of a City break is that you can come and go on any days of the week that you select, normally using scheduled aircraft to spend 3 or 4 nights in a city, with a complete selection of differing hotels. Imagine flying to Barcelona, direct from Edinburgh, for 3 nights, staying in a smart city hotel full of character which only offers Bed and Breakfast because there are so many restaurants that you would want to try for lunch and dinner in the evening. Because time is limited you don't wait hours for transfer coaches, but are transported to your hotel by taxi or car. Cities like Barcelona are excellent for walking about, seeing the marinas, waterfront, Las Ramblas shopping street and the Food market. Though no direct flights exist from Scotland, Vienna is another popular destination, with all its imperial splendour, Art Nouveau, waltzes and coffee houses. A grand ring of 19th century palaces surrounds the mediaeval city, with its narrow streets, hospitable inns, cafes and shops. Two sets of customers have recently joined a break to Vienna with a trip to Budapest, using the train to travel from one to the other. Both cities boast much of the 19th century grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire. It's Bela Bartok and Liszt Museums in Budapest as it is the Strauss family in Vienna. There are many suitable Italian cities to visit for a short time, and Florence is one of the finest settings of them all. On the banks of the River Arno, Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and the city of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto, Dante and their patrons the Medici family. When you are there a visit to the Uffizi Gallery and Museum is a must! There are direct flights now from Edinburgh to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland. Krakow is rich in museums, art galleries, concert halls and churches; as a university city it comes alive at night in cellar bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Like Prague this city largely escaped destruction during the World War II. In Prague only one building was hit during that war, and it is now known as the American Church in honour of its bombers!

After one of the coldest winters on record, followed by the driest March and April on record, late spring and early summer was thoroughly wet and cool, and some gale force winds blew for good measure. All this has provided very stressful conditions for our lawns this year so far, although the farmers and gardeners in the south-east will no doubt have welcomed some of our rain. We are now spreading a slow release fertiliser for the summer, and doing a second weedkill spray. The first weeds to appear each year include old favourites such as daisies and dandelions (there seemed to be a dandelion epidemic around the Moray Firth this spring), but now we are seeing clover and buttercups getting going big time. The rain doesn’t only get the grass growing but the weeds love it too. The biggest problem we see on lawns (at all times of the year) is mowing too short, usually a man-thing I have to say. We recommend a cut not shorter than 1”. The grass will look greener with a bit of leaf left. It will be stronger too as it uses the leaf surface to absorb moisture, air and light. This allows it to grow more vigorously and it will be in a better condition to take up any fertiliser it is being offered. The worse thing is, a weak, poorly, scalped lawn is not strong enough to fight off competition from moss and weeds. In our area, moss needs little encouragement and is the No.1 issue on our lawns. (Insert photo 007) Use caption:Green Thumb at the seaside !
Specific problems to look out for at this time of year include Red Thread, a fugal disease which blooms in periods of high humidity and a little warmth (our summer). It is very common, occurring every year on many lawns, we have already seen outbreaks
around Nairn this year. Typically presenting as reddish/brown spikes of grass in patches, it can even turn pinkish with a white cotton wool type bloom on top in severe cases. Once established, if humidity continues (and it usually does round here), it can spread and last right through until the first frosts. It wont kill the grass, but it can be pretty unsightly for the rest of the year, and some lawns and microclimates get it year after year. We apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns to kill off the spores and one application is usually successful if treated early enough. As with most plant care, sharp tools and clean cutting are one way of preventing ragged ends and entry points for disease. Keep your lawnmower blade sharpened. (Insert photo Red Thread) use caption:Red Thread
For many this will be family holiday time, and the grass will be swaying in the breeze on your return. Resist the temptation to cut it right back all in one go, it will look traumatised for some time. Start with a high cut and reduce over a few weeks. We actually have a growth retardant we can apply before the holidays, and it slows the grass right down for 4 – 6 weeks ! For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos go to www.greenthumb.co.uk or contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE lawn analysis on 01667 404774. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Cawdor and cover the whole Moray Firth area.

God would have none of us to perish in our sins that’s why He sent His Beloved Son, showing His love for us that through Him(The Lord Jesus) and His Sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary that we might live; ‘...Jesus paid it all, all to Him we owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow! ‘
One day we will all have to meet The Lord Jesus Christ. We will meet Him either as our Saviour or as our Judge! Those who are not with Him here on earth He will be against them in eternity and they will be judged accordingly. Will He say unto us “I know you not? or “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord?
What have we done (and what are we doing) with Jesus who is called Christ? Have we trusted Him with our soul’s salvation having realized and understood that He died for us, for our sins? or will we not have this man Jesus Christ to rule over us? Will we continue to live stubbornly and deliberately for self for sin and for satan? When we meet Him, will we be ready?
Do we know Him? Don’t ask ourselves do we know about Him, but do we KNOW HIM! Are we a lover of pleasures or a lover of God? Are we dead in trespasses and in sins or washed in the Blood of God’s Lamb the Lord Jesus Christ? Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgement is come , and worship Him that made heaven and earth: be ye ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh. He loves us, He died for us, that He might bring us to God; let us enter into and believe the truth that God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son, that if we believe in Him we should not perish in our sins but have everlasting life, for our sins have separated us from God.
We need to be born again! Do we know Him? Do we trust Him and Him alone for eternity. He knows them that are His and let everyone that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!
“Therefore “Therefore b be ye ey e also rready: eady: ffor or in such an hour as y h e think not the Son Son of man ccometh. ometh. h ye
