Culloden Battlefield
SpotLight Local Interest
The 16th April 1746 is a date which has been etched deeply into the annals of this nation’s history due to the battle of Culloden and the far-reaching effects of its aftermath. Essentially the battle of Culloden was to end the possibility of restoring the Stuart household to the thrones of England and Scotland after a long period of risings which had begun with the deposition of James VII and II in 1689. The roots of this struggle between the Stuart and Hanoverian dynasties were steeped in religious and ideological differences. The battle lasted no more than an hour and saw the army of approximately 5-7,000 Jacobite soldiers robustly beaten by the 10,000 Government troops. It is estimated that 1,500 Jacobites were left dead compared to the 50 Government losses in the hour of battle. In terms of global conflict history, these are by no means a large number of losses or, indeed, even a large battle. It is perhaps due to the immediate aftermath of the battle that it has come to have such an extraordinary connection in Scottish history. To this day the battle still evokes strong emotions in many visitors and conjures strong support for Gaelic culture, which was irrevocably changed by the systematic ‘Pacification of the Highlands’ by the Hanoverian Government.
The project was funded by a wide variety of benefactors and, with backing from the Scottish Government, the European Union, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Bòrd na Gàidhlig, as well as other generous donations from various trusts and sponsors. As well as these, donations were made by individuals; including many National Trust for Scotland members; and fund-raising projects were also set up which saw a large amount of support from Scottish descendants all over the globe. This gave the opportunity for inscribed stones and ceiling names to be displayed at the centre in exchange for donations to the Memorial Project. The visitor to the centre will be able to experience an incredible journey through the 1745 rising. The story is told through a plethora of interactive media. Highlights of this include: The ‘Character Stations’, which give the visitor first hand accounts of the key events; ‘Campaign Tables’, which show the movements of both armies during the campaign. Most notable are the four minute ‘Battle Immersion Film’, which puts the visitor right at the heart of the hand to hand fighting, giving the visitor a shock of emotions to bring the style of fighting and the ferocity of the battle to life; and the ‘Battle Table’, which shows the battle happening from an aerial viewpoint, clearly showing the movement of regiments and the tactical decisions that were made to create the outcome. As well as the modernistic use of museum technology there is a remarkable collection of weaponry and objects on show, and alongside this the costumed Living History presentations will be guaranteed to bring the story of Culloden to life. Having experienced all of this, the visitor can also take a handheld GPS guide onto the battlefield itself, giving them information at various points as they see for themselves the place where this infamous event took place.
Today, Culloden Battlefield is owned and cared for by Scotland’s leading conservation charity, The National Trust for Scotland. The Trust depends on membership, donations and revenue raised at the properties to protect, maintain and provide education and enjoyment at over a hundred unique and amazing sites throughout Scotland. At Culloden, the site is also a war grave and memorial to the fallen on both sides.
The visitor centre also boasts a well stocked shop which is famed for its excellent collection of books, a fully licensed restaurant and spacious rooms for corporate hire. More information on this and upcoming events, as well as opening times, can be found on the property website at www.nts.org.uk/culloden or by phoning 0844 493 2159.
Commemoration of such an event is of the upmost importance to the National Trust for Scotland. In December 2007 the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Project was successful in creating a state-of-the-art £9.6 million visitor centre as a memorial to the events that occurred on the bleak moor, just 5 miles east of Inverness. The Battlefield Visitor Centre is widely regarded as one of the best in the world and has already received many awards; most notably becoming a Scottish Tourist Board 5 Star Visitor Attraction.

Ministers of Religion whatever hue, are often regarded as being, in the words of St Paul at least, “All things to all people"”(1 Corinthians 9 v 22 ). This is rightly so in terms of encouraging a fellow traveller on the road to one's redeemer! However, at times when applied to the great and the good of the world, it can often result in the clergy becoming nothing but a flatterer or an obsequious adviser. A case of they let him know their mind and he went their way! There are occasions however when the powers that be need to sit up and listen to the churches of the day, especially so in times of political and social uncertainty. As the writer of 2 Chronicles in the Bible speaks, “In those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations were upon all the inhabitants of the countries” - 15:5. This is perhaps particularly apposite in Moray as we try to get our heads

around the incredulous political ‘fall-out’ (sic) with regard to our two air bases! Past history, still fresh in the minds of some of our veterans show, how when under threat, our country pulls together as no other.
may bring great uncertainty, a move of house and home, or perhaps having to travel greater distances for work. Relative poverty may be the lot of many others. Yet strangely, through it all there lives still, whatever our circumstances, the life of one who came into the world at Christmas to serve and not to be served - St Matthew 20:28.
The present situation (at the time of writing) would tend to suggest that the world begins and ends at the Watford Gap! We are all in it, in the sense that there is a recession and that we need to tighten our belts, but it is patently obvious that some belts stretch further than others! Though not a fan of the gloomy anthem ‘Flower of Scotland’, the line “Send him homeward to think again”,would seem very pertinent for Defence Secretary Liam Fox. The Prime Minister on the other hand might do well to remember his own Clan roots (Aonaibh Ri Cheile - Let us unite)!
The story of Jesus Christ is perhaps not that dissimilar to the situations that many are facing this year. There is a short prayer which goes like this: O God help us to slow down during this busy season so that we may prayerfully, peacefully and calmly learn your will and cheerfully do it. Amen. Whatever your circumstance at this time, may you and yours be blessed and a blessing to those around you. God Bless.
For many families in our community this year, Christmas

Guinea Fowl With Winter Vegetable And Pearl Barley Broth
Chef’s Confidential
Now that the clocks have been turned back and the last of the leaves have blown from the trees, I think that we may be in for a long winter, so for those cosy nights in, here’s a nice winter warmer for you all. Guinea Fowl (supplied by Macbeths of Forres) is an underused bird in my opinion. It has the taste and flavour of somewhere between chicken and turkey and I think, that we all like one or the other. Ingredients - Serves Two 100 grams pearl barley 2 pints of chicken or vegetable stock ½ a Leek 1 large carrot ¼ turnip ½ an onion 8-12 baby potatoes 2 guinea fowl breasts For the Broth Cover and soak your pearl barley overnight so it absorbs some of the water which will make it easier to cook the next day. Drain the water from the barley and bring to the boil and then simmer with one pint of your chicken stock until soft and edible; if the liquid reduces, more water can be added at any time. Once the barley is soft and edible drain of the stock and put aside. For the vegetables Cut your leeks into inch-long rounds and fry gently in some vegetable oil until they are nicely coloured and soft, then put aside. Peel and cut your carrot and turnip then put into boiling water with a touch of salt and cook until soft. Take out of water and run under cold water until cool then put aside. Slice onion and sweat off in vegetable oil with salt until soft, keeping it as white as possible by adjusting your heat when needed, then put aside. Boil your potatoes in salted water until ready (roughly 10-15 mins) cool down with running cold water and put aside. To prepare the Guinea Fowl Put on a chopping board (preferably one you always use for raw meat) - you can take the bone and skin off if you want but I prefer them on. Remove any excess skin or gristle with a sharp knife, season lightly with salt (maldon salt is better and more natural than table salt)
page 22 - December 2010
Put a splash of vegetable oil into a non stick pan, put Guinea Fowl into the oil when pan is cold (this may go against what you have been told before but it is so the skin of the bird doesn’t blister and you get an all over better golden colour - believe me, I thought the Chef was crazy when I was shown this!) Gently heat the pan and once the skin is golden and crispy, turn over to the flesh side for 3-4 mins. Take out of frying pan and put onto an oven tray and cook at 180c for 812 mins or, if you have a temperature probe it should be over 73c, however not much more or your meat will become dry. To put dish together, put all vegetables, potatoes and barley into your chicken stock and heat until nice and hot then divide between two bowls (giving more to the cook of course!) then place the cooked Guinea Fowl on top. I have garnished mine with pea shoots (from Spey Fruit of Elgin). I hope this will keep your cockles warm and your feet toastie! We look forward to seeing you during December @ Knockomie and wish you a very Happy Festive Season and a Good New Year. Look out for Knockomie's fireworks at Hogmanay!

ExTrACTS FrOM THE DrAFT MinuTES OF THE MEETing OF 12TH OCTOBEr 2010 OF THE CiTy AnD rOyAl BurgH OF Elgin COMMuniTy COunCil
Police Business and National Security • PC Harris advised that the public should see cycle patrols in due course. The uniform worn would be high visibility clothing and a helmet. • PC Harris advised that a Blue Tooth initiative had taken place in the M&S car park vicinity, although this had limited effect. The Police have spoken with M&S regarding CCTV footage, but due to most incidences taking place late at night the footage was unclear. The retail Crime Officer will be taking this issue on board. • Cllr Jarvis asked whether it was an offence to drink alcohol in Cooper Park as somebody had recently witnessed young adults with children drinking in Cooper Park. PC Harris advised that the City of Elgin Bye-law prohibits drinking alcohol in public places and that had this incident been seen by the Police, the drink would have been confiscated and a fixed penalty fine issued. Committee Reports • Environment - Mosaic on Plainstones. Anne glover advised that Denise gormley was investigating funding options, although she felt that this should be uplifted and has passed costings to Jacqui Taylor, BiDS Manager. Alex Macmillan informed Anne glover that a suggestion was made at the Elgin north Area Forum to involve the college and schools. Anne glover stated that these options would be considered when funding is in place. • Shop greenery. - Anne glover advised that all correspondence regarding this has been handed to Jacqui Taylor, BiDS Manager for consideration. no further action is required. • Overhanging foliage. - Anne glover advised that five houses have been approached and work has been carried out on some of the overhanging foliage. Anne glover stated that specific streets and houses requiring attention must be identified to the Council. it was agreed that should anyone notice any overhanging foliage to inform Anne glover who would then notify the Council.

• Proposed Waiting restrictions - A941 Morriston road. Murray ross reported that himself and george littlejohn were dealing with an objection letter they had received from Campbell’s Bakery at Bishopmill concerning the loss of parking bays, which they feel may harm their business. george littlejohn has discussed the possibility of the double yellow lines being lifted ahead of the full yellow bus zone on the A941 n/B with James Smith. if this is agreed, this will compensate for the two parking stalls at the north end of the curb parking area giving back one and a half parking stalls. • Parking charges at lossie green and lossie Wynd - Murray ross reported that signs were still in place directing drivers to Free Parking at these car parks. Murray ross advised that he has spoken to Johnnie Morran of Moray Council roads with regard to this and was informed that Bear Scotland have been asked for the signs on the A96 to be changed. • lossiemouth Elgin Bus - Murray ross advised that the C&rBoECC r&T Committee had asked Stagecoach why the destination board for the lossiemouth to Elgin Bus stated Pinefield; the reply was that Pinefield was the final destination. A suggestion was put forward that this should state Elgin and then change to Pinefield when leaving the Bus Station. Awaiting a reply from Angela lamb of Stagecoach and Peter Finlay of Moray Council. • Sign at Elgin rail Station - Murray ross advised that he has spoken to Alistair Campbell, Moray Council libraries concerning the sign at the rail Station still directing members of the public to the nearest bus stop being the St giles Centre and not the one directly outside the rail Station. Murray ross also asked if it would be possible to have a timetable attached to the existing bus shelter directly outside the rail Station before the 2011 tourist season. • link up of footpath at Boots Chemist, Thornhill Drive to Cycle Way on Thornhill road - Murray ross reported that he is

taking this issue forward with iain Drummond, Moray Council. The Chairman agreed to update louise Ellerby of Elgin South Area Forum. • Murray ross stated that a reply has been received from gordon Holland in response to the C&rBoECC r&T Committee’s letter to Mr Keddie, the Chief Executive of Moray Council. All issued had been answered. Murray ross felt that all Council car parks should be Pay and Display throughout Moray. • laura Keil asked about the proposals for paths through the Doocot Park. Cllr Divers advised that within the urban Freedom process, they are proposing to have cycle paths throughout Elgin. • Cllr leadbitter advised that the Economic, Development and infrastructure paper has significant detailed plans regarding the urban Freedom process and advised that full details would be available to view within the next few days via the Moray Council Website. There will also be details of various restrictions and changes in priorities that would of interest to the C&rBoECC r&T Committee. • youth - Michael gates reported that he had attended the launch meeting of the Moray young Citizen Award on the 21st September 2010. He gave details of the Award and advised that more information was available to view via the Moray Council Website. • Anne glover agreed to speak to Wilma Milne regarding the City & royal Burgh of Elgin Community Council’s young Citizen Award shield. • Michael gates raised concerns at the lack of visibility due to the bushes in the centre of the laich Moray roundabout. Murray ross advised that there were different views on roundabouts and it was felt by some that if visibility is lowered it would slow vehicles down on the approach to roundabouts. george littlejohn agreed to have a look at the roundabout in question. Officer, Ken Kennedy, personally monitoring situation. • 008 - Please stop the bleep from the lED notice board in the Waiting room at linkwood Medical Centre. it is too loud. Just use for patients being called to Doctors’ rooms. The noise is earsplitting and the incessant bleeping just about drives you crazy. it is the amount of time you have to concentrate on the board while waiting for your appointment. The appointments always run late so you are left hopelessly transfixed, staring at the board, for normally 20 to 30 minutes. • 009 - May i suggest that a notice board be placed in Cooper Park notifying people of forthcoming events. This will give people advanced warning of activities and hopefully more people would attend or take part - A discussion took place regarding this and the possibility of having several community notice boards around Elgin. Members were asked to bring comments back. • 012 - i think the youth Café should only be for older people. Eg. 15+. Or maybe 3 days a week for over 15 and 3 days a week for under 15 - passed to management of youth Café for consideration. • 020 - Approach made on behalf of Mother. Mother is 82. Stays in lhanbryde. Doctor is in Fochabers. Mother has to have her Blood Pressure taken regularly. She has difficulty getting to Fochabers. She has been told that she cannot get help because she isn’t housebound. Wants to know who she can contact/speak to re problem. remembrance Day Parade The event is due to take place on Sunday 14th november 2010 and members agreed that the tradition of participation should continue - both on the Plainstones and at new Elgin.sented and members were invited to read the following documents: Next Meeting Tuesday 14th December 2010 at 7pm

“ Parliament Blog ” While generally avoiding hard-nosed politics in this column it is really impossible this month not to speak about the impact of the Strategic Defence Review on Moray and the efforts being put in by politicians of all parties and none, public agencies the crucially, and, combined people power of the civilian and service communities to back our local bases. Angu s Robertson MP
That people power was demonstrated with a huge turnout at the march and rally in Lossiemouth, sending a clear and unequivocal message to Westminster. For my own part I have tabled questions in parliament on both Kinloss and Lossiemouth and pressed the Prime Minister, Defence Secretary and other Ministers on this critical issue on numerous occasions. With this combined effort from many, many people a powerful case is being made. The Coalition Government can be in no doubt of that resolve.
In recent weeks the Kinloss and Forres area has been dealt a heavy blow following the announcement by the Conservative/Lib Dem Coalition Government of the cancellation of Nimrod. With the additional huge uncertainty over the future of RAF Lossiemouth the economic and social impacts on Moray are severe.
very short space of time. I was very proud to join so many people and looking out from the podium at the massed ranks people determined to show their support was a humbling experience. Moray has picked up the gauntlet and is taking the fight for our communities straight to the top.
It has been fantastic to see the positive way in which the communities have rallied together through sites on Facebook and the march and rally in Lossiemouth, which was an amazing piece of organisation by the community in a Richard L och head MS P
