Orienteering

Local Interest

Take a new direction! Pub quiz sports question. Which Moray sporting event has drawn the most participants in the last 10 years? A well-known event like the Moray Marathons is the obvious answer but surprisingly it’s orienteering. When we heard that almost 4000 runners had converged on Culbin Forest in the summer of

2007 for what we thought was a minority sport, we asked local club Moravian Orienteers to explain why so many were attracted to Moray. Orienteering has been around for a long time. It was invented in Victorian times by the Swedish army and introduced into Scotland in the 1960s. In essence it’s a cross-country race, but one with one big difference. Instead of following a set route, runners must work out for themselves how to get round the course. The idea is to visit several checkpoints along the way. At the beginner level, they are close together in easilylocated positions, mainly reached by running along tracks. At the other end of the scale they can be far apart in the remotest places, as far as possible from obvious landmarks. Courses vary between 1 Km and 18 km and can take place not only in rugged mountain and forest areas, but also in parks and towns. Even Forres has its own orienteering map! In orienteering it’s rarely the fastest runner who wins. It’s sometimes referred to as ‘cunning running’ as it’s the runner who navigates fastest who comes out on top. It’s very easy to make navigation mistakes, especially on harder courses, and the knack is to make sure your legs don’t go faster than your brain! There are thousands of areas mapped for orienteering in the UK, and Moray has some of the world’s finest orienteering terrain. Forested sand dune areas like Culbin and Roseisle provide great competition areas because the intricate contour shapes tax even the best navigators, while the going under foot is never too rough. This enables older, less agile people to take part too. Orienteering competitions are divided into 5-year age groups with courses getting shorter as you get older, so people can keep on competing right into their 80s when athletic ability might be on the wane but the mind is still just as sharp. Moray’s forests also have lots of paths that make them perfect for beginner-level

page 4 - July 2010

courses. Every event lays on courses for the very young, and competitive orienteering can start as young as age 7 or 8. The Culbin event in 2007 was part of a 6-Day festival based in Grantown on Spey, attracting over 1000 overseas competitors as well as 2500 Brits. In 2008 the forest hosted the British Championships where another 2000 runners descended on the tiny village of Kintessack. Anyone can take part, whatever the level of event, and this one was no exception where young local children were able to line up alongside elite national champions whose courses shared the same area. Lately there’s been a boom in adventure running for which navigation at speed is a fundamental part. Local schools have recently discovered orienteering and many have their own school maps. The area’s Active Schools co-ordinators stage inter-school events where hundreds of children have learned to map read in an exciting and active way. All of Moray’s schools come together at Gordonstoun every April for an annual schools festival and this year youngsters can also look forward to a special competition. On June 13th, Culbin Forest will be the venue for the first ever Moray and Highland Junior Orienteering Championships. It’s aimed at novices who have discovered the sport at school, and anyone aged 16 or under on the day can take part. With entry classes for boys and girls in 2-year categories from under 11

upwards, the event will be combined with a mainstream competition open to anyone. This should be an exciting chance for budding adventure runners to take part in a big event at Scottish Orienteering’s Hampden Park! With the 2-yearly Scottish 6-Day Orienteering Festival returning to the Moray Coast in August 2013 it’s the perfect place to start getting in training for what might be Moray’s biggest sporting event of the next decade! Moravian Orienteers stage at least one local event every month. They also organise training sessions and enter teams in races further afield. New members are always welcome so if adventure running Moravian style sounds like your kind of thing you can find more information on their web site www.moravianorienteering.org

During the war between the states, a young soldier in the Union Army lost his older brother and his father in the battle of Gettysburg. The soldier decided to go to Washington, D.C. to see President Lincoln to ask for an exemption from military service so that he could go back and help his sister and mother with the spring planting on the farm. When he arrived in Washington, after having received a furlough from the military to go and plead his case, he went to the White House, approached the front gate and asked to see the president. The guard on duty told him, “You can’t see the president, young man! Don’t you know there’s a war going on? The president is a very busy man! Now go away, son! Get back out there on the battle lines where you belong!” So the young soldier left, very disheartened, and was sitting on a little park bench not far from the White House when a little boy came up to him. The lad said, “Soldier, you look unhappy. What’s wrong?” The soldier looked at the little boy and began to spill his heart to him. He told of his father and his brother being killed in the war, and of the desperate situation at home. He explained that his mother and sister

had no one to help them with the farm. The little boy listened and said, “I can help you, soldier.” He took the soldier by the hand and led him back to the front gate of the White House. Apparently, the guard didn’t notice them, because they weren’t stopped. They walked straight to the front door of the White House and walked right in. After they got inside, they walked right past generals and high-ranking officials, and no one said a word. The soldier couldn’t understand this. Why didn’t anyone try to stop them?

The good news of the gospel is that through faith in Jesus Christ we have access to the Father. Because of Christ, we can have peace with God. We can come to him anytime, anywhere. “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility…For through him we have access to the Father.” (Ephesians 2:13, 18)

Finally, they reached the Oval Office where the president was working - and the little boy didn’t even knock on the door. He just walked right in and led the soldier in with him. There behind the desk was Abraham Lincoln and his Secretary of State, looking over battle plans that were laid out on his desk. The president looked at the boy and then at the soldier and said, “Good afternoon, Todd. Can you introduce me to your friend?” And Todd Lincoln, the son of the president, said, “Daddy, this soldier needs to talk to you.” The soldier pled his case before Mr. Lincoln, and right then and there he received the exemption that he desired. © Youth Specialties 2001

Many people are trying to find the way to God. The world often tells us that many paths lead to God. If you live a good life, if you don’t steal, if you do good deeds, if you have a vague believe in a higher power you can know God. However the bible makes it clear. The only way to know God and the wonders of eternal life is to put your faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God. Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14v6

Murray Ross stated that all roundabouts must be obeyed and that the C&RBoECC R&T Committee has tel: 01309 690063

I never thought I would be asked the question ‘Would you like to have your picture taken with a Giant Inflatable Colon?’. While it is a fairly surreal statement to read in a letter, it is actually one of the more creative ways of getting an issue to the attention of MP’s. In this case it is the very worthy Bowel Cancer Campaign, which, with the support of TV personality Lynn Faulds Wood is doing a fantastic job raising awareness of a serious, but also preventable and curable form of cancer. I can recommend a visit to the campaign’s website at www.bowelcancer.tv It does go to show, though, that campaigns, even on very serious issues, can have a big impact through humour and get people to sit up and take notice.

Ang us R o b e rts on M P I really enjoy informing fellow MSP’s in the Scottish Parliament about how Moray is home to around half of Scotland’s whisky distilleries. I like to tell them that my summer constituency tours are great fun! Representing Speyside and Moray does have its advantages. For instance, it’s now traditional to hold the first round of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival whisky judging in the Scottish Parliament before the finals take place prior to the annual dinner. As the host MSP, I am now appointed a judge and have to sit alongside the professionals and sample anywhere between 50 and 60 Speyside drams, it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it! However, if any reader is worried about my health or their local MSP setting a bad example, don’t worry, as we only take a small sip of each dram and usually spit it out before eating some more oatcake and washing out our mouths to help prepare for the next tasting! This annual event is now one of my favourite parliamentary duties!

asked Bear Scotland to re-paint the lines on this roundabout. • Speed Limit on B9012 Duffus Road Harry Torry asked the R&T Committee if they had received any information regarding proposed changes to the speed limit on the B9012 Duffus Road, from Spynie to Beech Brae. Harry Torry felt that with more children likely to be walking to the Academy an increase in speed limit was not appropriate. Murray Ross advised that the C&RBoECC R&T Committee were not made aware of these changes and would investigate the reason for this. Community Planning • Elgin North Area Forum - The Waulkmill Residents’ Association is now freestanding. • Future Funding of Community Council - in favour of Option 2. • Elgin South Area Forum - No regular meeting took place in April; instead they had a Development Planning Meeting.

• Future meetings to take place once a month on the third Tuesday. • Will be inviting one of the Community Planning Partners to speak at themed meetings every other month from June 2010. • Elgin Ear Surgeries:15th June, 17th August and 19th October 2010 from 6.30pm-7pm to be held at NEON. AOCB • Harry Torry raised concerns regarding tree-felling contractors not removing branches and tidying up upon completion. Harry Torry advised that he had reported a tree that had fallen into the River Lossie at Morriston Park, which was removed and cut up into pieces and left. He then witnessed members of the public throwing the pieces into the river. Harry Torry felt this contributed to the litter problem within Elgin. Cllr Russell advised that this was an operational issue, but there is a growing body of opinion that branches should be left for sustainability and long-term regeneration. Murray Ross felt that branches

should be cleared away from the riverside as when the river rises branches can be swept away and congregate under bridges and could lead to flooding. Harry Torry agreed to investigate further. • Cllr Russell advised that National Litter day was on Thursday 10th June 2010 and International Bio-diversity day Saturday 22nd May 2010. • Cllr Russell requested the assistance of the C&RBoECC and other community groups in creating a ‘Street Name Bank’ for future developments. Members agreed to discuss and put forward any suggestions. • The Chairman advised that a suggestion had been put forward for Committee reports to be circulated to all members 7 days prior to the meeting to allow members time to digest and make comment at the meeting. After a lengthy discussion, all members present agreed the motion. Next Meeting Tuesday 6th July 2010 at 7pm

Coastal Defences and World War II in Moray

SpotLight Local Interest

On the 1st of September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain declared war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. Until World War II, Britain successfully relied on its strong Navy to protect its shores. Even during World War I, a German invasion seemed unlikely. By the summer of 1940 however, Britain and her allies had suffered defeats in Norway, Denmark and France. German forces occupied the Channel Islands and Hitler issued Directive 16, Operation SEALION, outlining the invasion of Great Britain. Germany expected Britain to surrender but the British did not.

“We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender” - the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, House of Commons 4th June 1940 The British Army was undermanned and illequipped having suffered defeat in France. It seemed like invasion was inevitable but Britain planned to do everything it could to stop the enemy. A defence plan was developed that involved the entire country, from the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland to the south coast of England. Today, archaeological remains of these coastal defences are still visible all over Britain; they remain as testimony to the defiant spirit of a nation isolated and under attack. The focus of General Ironside's defence plan for Britain was the construction of land defences during 1940 and 1941. A German invasion of Britain would bring with it armoured tanks. The main aim was to combat the movement of tanks by using a combination of natural and man-made obstacles. Sections of coastline, where the enemy could easily land, had a series of defences built along them, known as forming a ‘crust’. These coastal defences are evident at Roseisle, Lossie and Culbin.

fields, walls of scaffolding and barbed wire fences supported these defences. Ports were a major enemy target and so coastal gun batteries were placed nearby to protect them. There is one located at Lossie Forest. After the fall of France, Polish troops were evacuated alongside the British from Dunkirk. Once they arrived in Scotland, the Polish created the 1st Polish Army Corps. The army was under the command of Generals Stanisław Maczek and Marian Kukiel. The Polish forces helped build and man anti-invasion defences along the Scottish coast, including at Lossiemouth. The Polish troops were popular in Scotland. “I can remember marching up Sauchiehall Street and the welcome we received in our new uniforms.” Dr Kazimierz Piotr Durkacz in Henderson's (2001) ‘The Lion and the Eagle’. In 1945, the war ended but many Poles could not return home. The Soviet Union and communism had taken control of their homeland. Many families sent word to loved ones to stay in Scotland.Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit (NOFU) recruited skilled lumberjacks to come over to Scotland to cut down trees for the war effort. Over three thousand five hundred men volunteered. The island of Newfoundland is located off the east coast of Canada. In 1949 it became part of Canada, but at the start of World War II it was a separate country. Unlike the Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC), which was sent to Britain at the same time, the NOFU was not a military unit. The men were hired on six month long contracts and were paid the same amount as they were paid at home; two dollars per day or twelve dollars a week. Although not in the military, many of the men who volunteered to come over wanted to join the fighting. The work they were doing, however, was as essential to the success of the war as the fighting itself. “They are needed here (Britain) on work of national importance, and cannot be replaced. Moreover, it is not easy to train a man, however strong and fit he may be, to become a good lumberjack.” Mr Edgar Baird, NOFU Manager in W. J. Passingham (1941), Illustrated News

Man-made obstacles included lines of concrete anti-tank blocks that formed a barrier between regularly placed pillboxes. Pillboxes were small concrete structures where a squad of men could stand protected and fire against the enemy at close range. At Roseisle and Lossie Forests, you can still see their remains along the beach. Ditches, mine-

Today the remains of the coastal defences are visible in Culbin, Lossie and Roseisle Forests. The land is managed by Forestry Commission Scotland and one of the key roles of the Commission in their management of this land is the protection of these monuments to the British spirit!

Explore your forests! Culbin is ideal for walking, with miles of paths and tracks to explore, winding among the pine covered dunes and coastline. The Hill 99 Trail is an ideal walk for first-time visitors and takes about 2-3 hours starting from the main car park at Wellhill. Along the way, you will find the dragonfly pond, a pretty pond where you can admire brilliantly-coloured dragonflies during the summer.

Historic

Local Interest

Highland Games The origin of games and sports predates recorded history. An example of a possible early Highland games venue is at Fetteresso, although that location is technically a few miles south of the Scottish Highlands. It is reported in numerous books and Highland games programs, that King Malcolm III of Scotland, in the 11th century, summoned contestants to a foot race to the summit of Craig Choinnich (overlooking Braemar). King Malcolm created this foot race in order to find the fastest runner in the land to be his royal messenger. Some have seen in this apocryphal event the origin of today's modern Highland games. During various times of English occupation, from before the Wars of Independence to the suppression after the Jacobite wars, the men of Scotland were forbidden to bear or train with arms, in an attempt to prevent another popular Scottish uprising. Scots continued to train for war; they simply did so with the implements of war replaced with the implements of the Highland games.

There is a document from 1703 summoning the clan of the Laird of Grant, Clan Grant. They were to arrive wearing Highland coats and "also with gun, sword and dirk". From this letter, it is believed that the competitions would have included feats of arms. However, the modern Highland games are largely a Victorian invention, developed after the Highland Clearances.

the stone is put with one hand with the stone resting cradled in the neck until the moment of release. Scottish hammer throw: This event is similar to the hammer throw as seen in modern-day track and field competitions. A round metal ball (weighing 16 or 22 lb for men or 12 or 16 lb for women) is attached to the end of a shaft about 4 feet in length and made out of wood, bamboo, rattan, or plastic. With the feet in a fixed position, the hammer is whirled about one's head and thrown for distance over the shoulder. Weight throw, also known as the weight for distance event. A weight is made of metal and has a handle attached either directly or by means of a chain. The implement is thrown using one hand only. The longest throw wins. Weight over the bar, also known as weight for height. The athletes attempt to toss a 56 pound weight with an attached handle over a horizontal bar using only one hand. Each athlete is allowed three attempts at each height. Mu sic For many Highland games festival attendees, the most memorable of all the events at the games is the massing of the pipe bands. Normally held in conjunction with the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, as many as 20 or more pipe bands will march and play together It is, in fact, the music of the bagpipe which has come to symbolise music at the Games and, indeed, in Scotland itself. In addition to the massed bands, nearly all Highland games gatherings feature a wide range of piping and drumming competition, including solo piping and drumming, small group ensembles and, of course, the pipe bands themselves. In ve r n es s g am es The date of the first gathering on the banks of the River Ness by our ancestors has been lost in the mists of time and will forever remain a mystery. What we do know is that back in 1822 fundraising took place in the town to revive those ancient Games and to give the Capital of the Highlands a Highland Games that its townsfolk could be proud of.

Ev en ts Caber toss: A long tapered pine pole or log is stood upright and hoisted by the competitor who balances it vertically holding the smaller end in his hands. Then the competitor runs forward attempting to toss it in such a way that it turns end over end with the upper (larger) end striking the ground first. Competitors are judged on how closely their throws approximate the ideal 12 o'clock toss on an imaginary clock. Stone put: This event is similar to the modern-day shot put as seen in the Olympic Games. Instead of a steel shot, a large stone of variable weight is often used. The thrower is allowed to use any throwing style so long as page 22 - July 2010

Barbecue Sauce Spare Ribs

Chef’s Confidential

Ingred ients 1.8kg pork spare ribs 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, peeled and chopped 4 clove garlic, crushed 2 red chillies, finely chopped 2 tsp fennel seeds, crushed 115g dark brown sugar 100ml dark soy sauce 600ml tomato ketchup black pepper Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Place the spare ribs on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until cooked through.

While the ribs are cooking heat the olive oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry until fragrant. Add the chilli, fennel seeds and sugar and cook, stirring often, until sugar melted. Add the soy sauce and tomato ketchup. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Bring to the boil and simmer for around 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Once the ribs have cooked through, remove them from the oven and brush liberally with half the barbecue sauce, leaving half for later. Return the ribs to the oven and cook for a further 10 minutes to glaze the ribs. Serve with the remaining barbecue sauce on the side. To enjoy these ribs at a barbecue, follow the recipe as above the end of step two. Brush the ribs with barbecue sauce and cook over a preheated barbecue until glazed, then serve. Happy Cooking!
