It only seems like 5 minutes ago we were all talking about voting and elections and here we are again! So soon - too soon? I wonder what we would do if we didn’t have politicians telling us how things should be and what we should be thinking all the time. The great mantra about listening to the people seems to take a bit of a back seat when it comes to the winning of a Parliamentary Seat! Hey - Ho - here we go again!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS In this race of life why are you running? I love sport. In recent years Britain has been very privileged to host two massive global sporting events - the 2012 London Olympics and in 2014 the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Who could forget the kilts of the Scottish team? At both these events, we witnessed incredible performances by individuals and by teams who pushed themselves to the limits as they competed to do their best for themselves and for the countries they represented. There were many incredible moments that will never be forgotten. However, the Barcelona Olympics of 1992 provided one of track and field’s most incredible moments. Britain’s Derek Redmond had dreamed all his life of winning a gold medal in the 400metre race and his dream was in sight as the gun sounded in the semi-finals at Barcelona. He was running the race of his life and could see the finish line as he rounded the turn into the back stretch. Suddenly he felt a sharp pain go up the back of his leg. He fell face first onto the track with a torn right hamstring.

As the medical attendants were approaching, Redmond fought to his feet. “It was animal instinct,” he would say later. He set out hopping, in a crazed attempt to finish the race. When he reached the home stretch, a large man in a T-shirt came out of the stands, hurled aside a security guard and ran to Redmond, embracing him. It was Jim Redmond, Derek’s father. “You don’t have to do this,” he told his weeping son. “Yes, I do,” said Derek. “Well, then,” said Jim, “we’re going to finish this together.” And they did. Fighting off security men, the son’s head sometimes buried in his father’s shoulder, they stayed in Derek’s lane all the way to the end, as the crowd gasped, then rose and howled and wept. Derek didn’t walk away with the gold medal, but he walked away with an incredible memory of a father who, when he saw his son in pain, left his seat in the stands to help him finish the race. The Good News of the Gospel is that God is not far off and distant. He does not watch our pain and our heartache

and do nothing about it. He is a God who comes alongside. Perhaps the most incredible claim Christians make about the man Jesus is that He actually is God. As Christians, we believe that, in Jesus, God became one of us, so we might see what God is like and find comfort, help and rest for our very souls. We are the visited planet. God sent His One and Only Son, the Lord Jesus, to this world. We are told in John’s Gospel that “The word became flesh and dwelt among us.” We are told in Matthew 1:23 that “Mary will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him ‘Immanuel’, (which means “God with us.)” In this race of life why are you running? What is your purpose? Allow God to put His arm around you and lead you into the wonderful future that could be yours in Christ.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

“ Parliament Blog I recently had a great time joining with the hugely popular midnight football league, which is a great activity being accessed by young folk right across Moray, keeping them fit and well occupied! I have always been a big football fan and, at the risk of losing a host of votes, I can reveal myself as a longstanding Aberdeen fan! For the many football fans across Moray the football season is reaching its climax. For Aberdeen fans it has been one of the best seasons in recent years and my eldest son and I have managed to get to some really good games. Hopefully more to come!

As this column is within 6 weeks of the May election I am in the unusual situation of not being able to call myself an MP as the House of Commons is now in dissolution pending the result of the election. It is an odd period where, despite the fact that I can and will respond to constituent's queries, I am doing it as a member of the public and no longer as MP. It is a quirk of our democracy that is difficult to explain and which, frankly, causes nothing but havoc for my poor office staff who have to create temporary letterheads, change answer machine messages and other fairly random things that have been the norm for the previous four years and forty something weeks! Whether I continue to write these columns is wholly dependent on whether you, the people of Moray, choose to elect me again. I hope that I will get your support to continue that privilege of representing you in Westminster but whoever you support, please use your vote which is a hard won democratic right that many people in the world regrettably still do not have. GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Is it just me, or has this Winter been pretty unpleasant ? I have to pay pretty close attention to the BBC and Met Office websites as you might imagine in this business. I also did a degree I geography (many years ago) which may/may not, help my forecasting! We have loads of work to get through every Winter, and never enough useable weather. I think this Winter has had an underlying theme. November was very nice. Since then however, it was a procession of North Atlantic low pressure systems, driven by a northerly jetstream. This has left the ground very heavy, with a good deal of water logging. The golf courses will now be aerating the ground to ease the compaction and let in some air, and so do we as Spring beckons. You can use a garden fork on smaller areas perhaps, but a whole garden lawn is best done with a machine. Our aerator (pictured) is heavier than me – by some way – and extracts thousands of cores from your lawn, in no time at all. You could get us to help, and it’s actually cheaper than hiring and doing it yourself. If you are going to rake or scarify the moss out now, you should do so before putting down a Spring feed. Otherwise you’ll traumatise the grass just after spending some time and money to try and bring it on !

16

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 500,000 customers and 200 branches across the UK, we are the local franchise, based in Nairn and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at: inverness@ greenthumb.co.uk

FOREST FUN FOR ALL Forests in Moray and Aberdeenshire are really hard to beat, whether walking, cycling, watching wildlife or a picnic with the family, the forests have so much to offer. Visit the coastal woods along the Moray Firth, the wonderful and majestic mountain of Bennachie with its surrounding forest, the peaceful pinewoods of Upper Deeside or the busy city woods round Aberdeen. Where else in the country can you get such variety! Whether you are a walker, mountain biker or horse rider, we have trails for you.

The annual Easter Eggstravaganza is back in 2015 and Forestry Commission Scotland has lined up a packed programme.

Roseisle is a beautiful coastal pinewood lining Burghead Bay and offering the perfect place for a family outing. Why not make a day of it, have a picnic or use one of our fixed barbecue sites while the children have fun in the play area. Relax on the sandy beach or have an energetic walk or cycle ride. As well as shorter circular routes, you can explore all the way to Burghead or College of Roseisle.

Come along on the 5th April, 1 - 4pm for some family fun. Get involved in outdoor activities, discover more about Scotland’s wildlife, hug a husky, go on a bunny hunt, orienteering, mountain bikes and much more. If you would like more information about this event or about Forestry Commission on 01466 794161 or email morayaberdeenshire@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Warm Savoury Scones, Melting Clava Brie Makes 10 Scones Ingredients: 225g Self Raising Flour 1 tsp Baking Powder 50g Butter 125g Grated mature Cheddar ½ tsp Arran Mustard 150ml Milk 1 Beaten Egg Method: Mix flour, baking powder and butter until a “bread crumb” mixture. Mix the mustard and the milk and add to the flour mixture. Knead to a soft dough. Roll on floured surface about 2 cm thick and cut to shape. Place on a baking tray with baking paper, egg wash and bake on 200°C for 12 to 15 minutes golden brown. Cool on a rack. This dish is nice as a snack, starter or as a canapé for a dinner party and the scones can be made in advance and frozen easily!! Once cooled, cut in half and cover with slices of brie, place under a grill or in a warm oven and let the cheese melt. Serve warm with beetroot salsa. Beetroot Salsa; 1 packet cooked beetroot 1 large shallot 1 tbsp crème fraîche 1 tbsp mayonnaise Dash of sherry vinegar and seasoning Finely chop the beetroot and shallot, mix with the crème fraîche and mayonnaise, season. Gold with a drop of water Many people have said to me, “I don’t like whisky”. My reply always is, “You just haven’t tasted the right whisky yet”.

Looking to raise money for your village hall or golf club? Hold a malt whisky nosing and tasting session.

Malt whisky comes in many different styles and flavours. With over 100 distilleries in operation in Scotland and each marketing various expressions there are lots to choose from.

Looking for a new way to start your office Christmas party? Book a malt whisky tutored nosing and tasting session.

Single malt is bottled at different ages (but remember old is not always best), it is bottled after being matured in different casks, it can be peated or unpeated; the variety in single malt whisky currently available seems to be endless. Go into any of the larger supermarkets at the moment and you will see a wonderful range of malt whiskies (with a range of prices also). Go into a specialist whisky shop and the range will be even more amazing.

Looking for different night in with family and friends? Book an experience in your home. Sessions are fun and interactive. At Discerning of Spirits we will not tell you what you are experiencing, we will facilitate the session and lead you so that you can tell us the aromas and flavours you are enjoying.

So what one will be best for you? Well, that is a question only you can answer but help is available to make your decision easier. A great way to learn more about how to appreciate malt whisky is to take part in a tutored nosing and tasting session. You use a number of your senses when appreciating malt whisky. Look at the colour, check out the legs, nose it and then taste it. In the world of malt whisky you also taste with your eyes and nose! At most sessions you will be given 4 or 5 different types of malt whisky to sample. You will experience whisky from different parts of Scotland, at different ages and with different cask effects. Discerning of Spirits is a new concept in Moray offering expert, but at the same time independent, tutoring in malt whisky nosing and tasting. Vic Cameron, founder and “noser” at Discerning of Spirits, is an expert in the field, having worked for over 23 years in the distilling industry. Discerning of Spirits can run sessions for all needs; we will come to your home for a private session for 6-10 people (or more if you have a large house), we will meet you in a bar or hotel for 2-4 people, we will come to your business or venue for a larger event. All event can be catered for, just ask for a quote.
