PASTORAL LETTER The Christian way of life is different - there are no losers As I write we are midway through a bumper summer of sport - Wimbledon championship and the British Grand Prix, the Tour De France has started in England (confusing) and footie fans await the World Cup final in suspense - which took an interesting turn as Germany soundly thrashed the home team and championship favourites, Brazil, in the semi finals and the outcome of Argentina and Netherlands is still as mystery. By the time you read this the results of the four yearly football fest will be history. There is only one great sporting event, that I am aware of, that is still awaited - the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. I am of an age that I can remember the Edinburgh Commonwealth games in 1970 - Scotland won 25 medals; 6 gold and 8 silver - our athletes did us proud. The most notable winners on the track were Lachie Stewart who, unforgettably, outran and defeated world legend Ron Clarke in the 10,000m and Ian Stewart who burst clear of a field including Kenyan track legend Kip Keino to take the 5,000m title. In the swimming pool David Wilkie broke his own British record winning a bronze medal for Breast Stroke. No doubt, this year, we will see many athletes from Scotland and other Commonwealth nations becoming household names and achieve celebrity status. However, the sharp reality of

competitive sport is that there can only ever be one winner. that they The rest have to settle with the the knowledge have either second prize, third prize or the honour of knowing that they have beaten a personal best or have simply taken part. The Christian way of life is different - there are no losers, no second prizes, no personal bests to beat - quite simply, all that find faith triumph. Jesus makes that quite clear Nicodemus asked him what he should do to achieve eternal life - Jesus simply replied, “All who believe will not perish but have eternal life.” While all can achieve glory in a life lived with Christ, there are no pre selection events to decide if you are good enough for inclusion in the team. Like sportsman, Christians require training, discipline and perseverance. Life for us is not a 100m sprint, it is more of a marathon, with some hurdles thrown in here and there to throw you off stride. There are times that you might feel yourself stumble but be encouraged, God offers strength for the race, cold water to quench our thirst and fresh legs when we grow weary. We never run alone. He is always right beside us cheering us on or ahead of us leading the way. Do you need energy and refreshment for the race of life? With only a few weeks to go until the Independence Referendum on 18 September it will be of no surprise to folk that this is the main thing filling my time! It is a frequent topic of conversation in the street, on buses and trains, amongst friends and in workplaces. The referendum debate has clearly engaged people in Scotland’s political future more than any other political campaign in recent times, which I believe is very positive for engagement between politicians like myself and the people we represent. That was the order of the day at Piping Hot Forres where I went head-to-head with Angus Robertson MP to make the traditional tattie treats with a twist ...and the result of the head-to-head… we were both beaten by the talented Mary Greer, who works at Mackenzie Cruickshank, who made a haggis and neeps tattie scone called the ‘Rabbie’! We were greeted with a smile and decided to eat first and were directed to the restaurant and bar, aptly named "The Gutter Bar & Grill", which was spacious and vibrant with a great buzz. The bar was well stocked and the menu was packed with all the favourites to suit all tastes. The boys had Chicken Nuggets and Hamburger from the Kids Menu, which includes all their favourites and comes with chips or smiley faces (beans optional) and a glass of squash. Both were generous portions and their empty plates were testament to the quality. Tamsyn chose the Chicken Fillets and I had the Haddock, both were served with a portion of chips and a side salad. Everything was superbly cooked and enough to leave us totally satisfied. The staff were professional and friendly throughout, catering to our every need without being imposing. With no room for desert (although there were some tempting choices) we headed for the bowling area, swapped our shoes, and headed for our lane. A great time was had by all in pursuit of that elusive 'strike' I won, of course! Pinz is so much more than a bowling alley. It is a great place to eat and drink with friends and family. The bar has wall mounted screens for sport lovers as well as pool tables and dart boards. There is a large area dedicated to arcade games and an air hockey table and let us not forget “Lunar Land", a large soft play area perfect for letting the kids loose. The venue also caters for children’s parties and conferences and weather permitting, you can ride the rodeo bull or sheep or attempt the bungee run - if you dare. All in all a great outing in a fun atmosphere for all ages.
