“Did you enjoy your week of summer? I heard someone say recently! Living on the Moray coast I have grown to expect the unpredictability of our weather - reason to moan, maybe? But look beyond the rain and view our beautiful Scottish outdoors. We may not have Sorento sunshine, but we’ve got scenery that is the envy of the world. So get out there and enjoy our spectacular Moray Coast - just don’t forget your brolly!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS God has started to speak – are you starting to listen? I can’t remember what we were celebrating – but it must have been quite significant because we were in a posh dining room at Edinburgh Zoo; work colleagues plus husbands and wives enjoying good food and lots of chat. As you might appreciate it was fairly noisy – the conversational buzz might have kept the lions awake. One guy, a couple of places down the table from me had recently left the organisation, I think to pursue further studies. Just to my right an older lady (slightly hard of hearing) leaned forward to enquire of him how he was getting on in his new situation. I should explain that ‘Donald’ was quietly spoken and always thought carefully before saying anything – good qualities in anybody! So he paused before replying. She,the questioner, was one of those people who are so full of energy they never seem to pause for a moment - and she didn’t. ‘What was that Donald, I didn’t catch your reply’. Slowly, deliberately he looked her in the eye and (straightfaced) responded, ‘that’s because I haven’t started to speak yet’.

Listening to others is a relatively simple skill; as is often remarked we have been given two listening devices and one for speaking. Yet, so often we are so busy talking, questioning and, yes, assuming that we don’t pause to really listen. To hear and digest what the other person is saying, so that we can respond appropriately. Another friend, whose standard conversational response was ‘very good’, was once caught out when he was told ‘I broke my leg’! And yes, he did answer – ‘very good’! The people who wrote and passed on God’s message to us tell us God is always speaking. The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is never heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world. Psalm 19:1-4 New Living Translation. So every time we open our eyes and look around we can ‘hear’ God speaking. As Paul, one of God’s spokesmen put it ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God

made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature. Romans 1:20 New Living Translation. If true (and I believe it is) I think that invites the question – am I listening? I mean, am I prepared to pause from whatever it is I am doing and for however long it needs to consider what God is saying to me? And to do that in the knowledge that God thought carefully before he spoke. Paul, again said that before the world was made God took decisions – he carefully planned both what to do and to say. He created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him - though he is not far from any one of us. Acts 17:26-27 New Living Translation God has started to speak – are you starting to listen?

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES School summer break is in full swing here in Moray and is a great chance get round summer events in Moray's communities and speak to folk outdoors in, hopefully, half decent weather. So far I've managed a few, with Piping at Forres being a particular highlight. I, once again, entered the Tattie Scone Championship, where I came a reasonably creditable joint fourth - I'm not saying how many were in the competition, but I wasn't last! The highlight, of course, was not my tattie scone baking - even though I reckon they were tasty - but the fantastic musical talent on display with the combined efforts of literally thousands of pipers and drummers. Congratulations to all the competitors, the organisers and the Forres community for the welcoming atmosphere. A great day out.

Summer recess is well underway and is the perfect opportunity to get out and about in communities across the constituency as part of my summer surgery tour, and of course spend some time with my family. My own summer began with me taking part in the Glen Moray Bike Ride on a cold, wet Sunday. I cycled the 25 miles along with many others, raising money for the North East Sensory Services charity, which is a fantastic local cause. Having completed the 75 mile cycle last year, I expected the 25 mile challenge to be a breeze in comparison... I was wrong! However, I was delighted to finish in a respectable time and to be part of this great event. Moray has many dedicated volunteers who help make events like the Glen Moray Bike Ride happen and they deserve our praise and thanks for their contribution to fundraising, benefiting many local and national charities.

GreenThumb Green

Red Thread Alert ! I’ve just put out an e-Alert to all our customers, as we have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed, clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year.

14

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. Don’t forget though, if we have dry spells during the summer, you need to water the grass just like any other plant. An hour with a sprinkler in the evening is best to ensure you don’t lose much of the benefit from evaporation during the day. Often people think you don’t need to water the garden in Scotland, but you do, especially around the drier parts of our area along the Moray Coast. The QVS experience encourages and develops well-rounded, confident individuals in an environment of stability and continuity. The main entry point is into Primary 7 and all places are fully funded for tuition and boarding by the Ministry of Defence. Families are welcome to find out more by contacting Admissions on +44 (0) 131 310 2927 to arrange a visit.

Queen Victoria School, Dunblane Wendy Bellars, Head Open Morning is Saturday, 19th September 2015 Queen Victoria School (QVS) is a co-educational boarding school fully funded – parents don’t pay fees – by the Ministry of Defence to provide stability and continuity of education for the children of UK Armed Forces personnel who are Scottish, or who have served in Scotland or who have been members of a Scottish regiment. There are 277 pupils in the School, ranging from Primary 7 through to S6. Age-ranges within each year-group are wide, however, because of the very varied and inevitably disrupted educational backgrounds from which the pupils come. One pupil came into S3 having been to 13 different schools; others into P7 having been to eleven different schools – and these are not just different schools, but different education systems as well.

Academic results are consistently well above the national averages, however, and there is a wide programme of extra-curricular activities, Games and the Combined Cadet Force. Major sports are rugby – where QVS is generally considered to “punch well above its weight” as a small school – and hockey, although there is a growing commitment to football as well. QVS pupils and their families greatly value the strength of mutual support in a school community where all recognise the reality of Service life. Set in 45 acres of beautiful Perthshire countryside, Queen Victoria School is easily accessible by road, rail or air.

If QVS pupils were not at the School, they would be attending whichever was the local school in the area in which their parents were posted. QVS has a particular brief from the Ministry of Defence to care for those eligible families who could not otherwise afford boarding education. Ceremonial – piping, drumming, Highland Dancing and drill – constitutes an important part of the life of the School and is a visible link between the pupils and the work that their parents have chosen to do, in the UK Armed Forces. The Pipes, Drums and Dancers of QVS are internationally renowned, having played at tattoos both at home and abroad, most recently in the Basel Christmas Tattoo 2013 and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2012.

There is no substitute for visiting a school, meeting its pupils and staff and picking up the atmosphere. If you would like to know more before travelling to Dunblane to visit us, however, and to request a DVD, please contact our Admissions Secretary on 0131 310 2927. Alternatively, you can write to: Admissions Secretary, Queen Victoria School, Dunblane, Perthshire FK15 0JY, United Kingdom, or visit our website www.qvs.org.uk

THE Scottish comedian Gus Lymburn at The Drouthy Cobbler In the two years that The Drouthy Cobbler has been open it has continued to innovate and expand – last year with the addition of a performance venue and very recently with the opening of its kitchen. During the last year the upstairs venue has hosted around two high quality events every week including comedians Mark Nelson, Jo Caulfield, Patrick Monahan. Musicians have been delighted to make Elgin a stop on their tour of the Highlands and award winning acts - like RM Hubbert, Ivan Drever, Tony Wright, Hector Bizerk, Scott Matthews, Mairearad & Anna – of all kinds of genres have played to great audiences. Upcoming events are listed in Spotlight magazine and on The Drouthy Cobbler's web site – www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk Moray's only monthly comedy club returns with another fantastic line-up on Wednesday 26th August. Starting in July last year, the Drouthy Cobbler has consistently brought the best of Scottish comedy to Elgin. Covering a wide swathe of new “up

and coming” comics to award-winning stand-ups, over 70 acts have now performed to the Do you like jokes? audience. The venue was recently recognised for this activity with a nomination for ‘Best Venue under 100 capacity’ at the Scottish Comedy Awards. Their stage is also open for any budding local comedians who would like to test their mettle in front of a live audience. Several local wannabe comics have already performed their debut five minutes and have been warmly received by both the crowd and fellow performers. If you fancy your chances, get in touch with the venue. Who knows? The next big thing could be right on our doorsteps. Starting in June, The Drouthy Cobbler launched a series of varietal wine tasting events for anyone with an interest in wines. The first event focused on the hugely popular and widely planted Sauvignon Blanc grape and was very well attended. The upcoming August tasting will explore the world of Pinot Noir A notoriously difficult grape to vinify due to its thin skin and sensitivity to cold, as well as a susceptibility to a variety of different viticultural diseases. Pinot Noir is also one of the most highly regarded grapes which, when done right, can produce some of the finest wines in the world, including Champagnes. A hugely complex wine, it can confuse tasters due to the variety of flavours that can come from it. Generally, it is known as lighter in style than most reds, with a comparatively low alcohol content. So on August 20th, no matter your level of wine knowledge, join them and learn not just about the grape but also the effect that different regions and climates can have on this fantastic wine. There will also be the opportunity to order any of the wines tasted, with a 10% discount if paid on the night.
