Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings He is here Recently when crossing a busy road via a pedestrian underpass, I noticed some graffiti prominently displayed on the wall. It simply read; “SPUD WAS HERE”. I have no idea who Spud is but he has left his mark. I read recently about some graffiti that was discovered in 1976 on the walls of a small hidden room under the Medici Chapel of the Basilica di San Lorenzo in Florence. This graffiti has proved to be of more lasting value than Spud’s because it is believed to have come from the hand of Michelangelo who for three months in 1530 went into hiding from his benefactors, the Medici. He had finished the Sistine Chapel in Rome in 1512 and had been working on the Medici Chapel for some time when he grew increasingly disillusioned with the Medici’s rule. So he disappeared and for 500 years it was assumed that he had been staying secretly with friends. It was only with the discovery of the hideaway with the beautiful charcoal drawings in 1976 that it was evident Michelangelo had concealed himself directly under the chapel he had been painting for those three months. Late in 1530 the Pope announced that Michelangelo’s safety would be guaranteed if he emerged from hiding
and promised to fulfil his commission to complete the Medici Chapel. This he did, leaving the memory of his dark dungeon behind, no doubt believing that it would never be discovered. The Church year begins in the darkness of winter. The short seasons of Advent and Christmastide are eagerly anticipated by Christians longing to hear again the call to stay alert and to wait expectantly for God’s intervention in Jesus Christ, his Son. The quite different accounts of the nativity recorded in St. Matthew’s and St. Luke’s Gospels continue to challenge the modern reader. We are left with no easy solutions to the questions that might tempt us to leave the whole infancy narratives to one side. Instead if we stay with them we may find they speak powerfully into the darkness of our winter. Matthew, uniquely, records the story of Joseph’s family’s flight in fear from Herod to Egypt. We are told in Matthew 2:14 that; “Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt.” There the family hid from the murderous Herod until his death. It may have been a short time in hiding like Michelangelo’s, we don’t know, but we can be sure that it was as laden with significance. For when the director of the Museum of the Medici Chapel

stumbled by accident upon the treasures of the graffiti on the hideaway wall, he knew that someone special had left their mark there. St. Matthew, in his Gospel, similarly knew that someone special had left his mark on Egypt when he recorded the reason for the holy family’s escape to there as a fulfilment of Hosea’s prophecy; “Out of Egypt I have called my son” (Matthew 2:15). Egypt, for Israel, was the place of enslavement and darkness. Jesus began his life by entering into the place of darkness and he would give his life by returning to the darkness at Golgotha in order that he would overcome it forever. We must resist the temptation to sentimentalise the Christmas stories because in doing so we rob them of their power to speak to us where we find ourselves in a world that is messy and dark. He has been where we are, more than that, he continues to be Emmanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23) now. He is here and so he is able to bring us from darkness into light. May God bless you all this festive season, Rev Geoff McKee Minister of St. Gerardine’s High linked with St. James’ Church of Scotland: Lossiemouth

Words by the Wayside “Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord: for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.” (1st Samuel 2:17)
Reader, God so loved you, that He offered up on Calvary’s Cross His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, that if you would believe on Him, you should not perish. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn you, but that you through Him might be saved. Refuse no longer God’s offering for your sins. Jesus Christ can make you whole, He is The Gift of God.

We’re on the countdown to Christmas and I’m looking forward to being back home for the festive rush and to support local businesses and services in the run-up to the big day. There is something special about Christmas in Moray with the scenery like something out of a festive story book, the bonus of excellent food and drink and the warmth of hospitality. I’ve been encouraged by the cross-party efforts ongoing to address the ridiculous delivery charges we are faced with in Moray. It was a key point I made in my maiden speech in the House of Commons and something I hope we can see action on. The charges faced by local people are simply wrong, and while this is an issue all year round, it is particularly acute at this time of the year. I must also make special mention of the efforts by local school children with their designs for my annual Christmas Card competition. The standard of entries was very high, and better than anything I could have come up with when I was at school! Can I also take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas when it comes.
Douglas Ross MP
Christmas is fast approaching and if you’re anything like me, you’ll not have gotten very far with the shopping. Whilst I won’t ask you to follow my lead when it comes to Christmas shopping organisation, I would like to encourage you to support our local businesses when picking up gifts for your loved ones. We have some very exciting small businesses throughout Moray and it is so important that we do all we can to shop local and support these businesses that are at the heart of our communities. Spending local is a boost to our local economy, our retailers and their staff. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank our public sector workers who keep our vital services running through the festive period. As Moray’s MSP, I am hugely appreciative of your contribution to our communities at Christmas and throughout the year. I wish everyone in Moray a very Merry Christmas.

SpotLIGHT Feature
INTRODUCING THE ULTIMATE ROAD TRIP
TO THE HEART OF
SCOTLAND “
Everything for which Scotland is famous in 250 miles to the heart of Scotland – that’s what visitors can expect from the country’s newest driving route revealed.. Launched at the Moray Speyside Tourism Conference in Elgin, the circular route will take visitors on a journey through Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast giving visitors the opportunity to drive fantastic roads with lovely views while also being able to explore castles, wildlife, coastal villages, stunning beaches, golf courses, mountains, forests and distilleries.
Guy Macpherson-Grant explained his vision:
I am delighted to reveal the North East 250 today amongst fellow tourism businesses in Moray Speyside. I am excited by the potential of the North East 250 to bring more visitors to our area and experience, what I believe, is the very best that Scotland has to offer. We need businesses along the Route to really get behind it and help make it the success I know it can be.
”
It is hoped that the new route will bring additional trade to communities situated along the North East 250, with visitors to the North East wishing to explore Scotland in a different way and to make the most of the various itineraries possible.
Laurie Piper, Operations Manager at Moray Speyside Tourism, the destination marketing organisation responsible for promoting Moray to visitors, commented: “I am confident that the North East 250 will contribute to the continued growth and development of Moray Speyside’s tourism industry which is what everybody gathered at today’s conference is aiming for.”
The North East 250 has been developed by local businessman Guy Macpherson-Grant, whose family’s roots on Speyside go back to the 16th century. Passionate about the North East of Scotland, Guy is confident that the North East 250 will encourage people to come to the region, to enjoy driving its roads and to enjoy everything it has to offer besides: spectacular scenery, bounteous wildlife, globally renowned food and drink, traditional warm hospitality and activities galore.
The North East 250 has already attracted significant support amongst businesses along the route. Partners and Supporters include Chivas Brothers, Ballindalloch Castle and Gardens, Turcan Connell, Walkers, Aberdeen International Airport, Speyside Gardens and the Station Hotel, Rothes. Jo Robinson, VisitScotland Regional Director, said: “This exciting new route is a welcome asset to the North East and will, we would hope, simulate the success of other similar routes around Scotland.
“This area has arguably the best scenery, landscapes and views in Scotland and we would anticipate that the introduction of such a route will bring economic benefit to the area and its tourism businesses through increased visitors.
Those visitors or locals doing the route can also become a Member for access to extras, including: a downloadable itinerary of choice, a printed map of the route, a North East 250 Member car sticker and a souvenir North East 250 Passport - to be stamped as you travel along the route.
“VisitScotland works closely with communities and businesses to showcase the rich assets, hidden gems and stories of every region in Scotland. Tourism is more than a holiday experience – it is integral to sustaining communities across Scotland by generating income, creating jobs and stimulating social change.” The North East 250 team has carefully curated initial lists of places to visit, as well as provided information on some accommodation providers and local amenities. Information on these can be found on www.northeast250.com under each of the route’s sectors: Speyside, the Cairngorms, Royal Deeside, Aberdeen, the East Coast and the Moray Coast. These attractions and places to visit will be added to all the time as businesses sign up, and feedback from people who have completed the route is encouraged to ensure that the best experience is created for future visitors. Guy Macpherson-Grant launches the North East 250, Scotland’s newest tourist route, with a Morgan Aero 8 finished in Porsche Metallic Prosecco and lichen green leather, courtesy of Revolutions Perth, at Ballindalloch Castle.
First drivers, The Cannonbawz Run, hit the road from Ballindalloch Castle on Scotland’s newest driving route, the North East 250.

SpotLIGHT Recipe

Turkey & Rice Soup Every one loves a hearty soup, particularly on those cold winter days in December. With this recipe you can put the left over turkey to good use keeping the family fed, warm and happy throughout the season.
Ingredients: 6 Slices of Smoked Bacon Chopped 500g Left over Turkey 2 Cloves Garlic, Minced 1 Onion Red Or White Diced 200g Chopped Carrots 200g Washed Spinach 1 Chopped Red Pepper
2 Cups of Cooked Brown Rice 2 litres Chicken or Turkey Stock Splash of White Wine Bay Leaf Thyme
Method: 1 In a pan gently fry the bacon until crispy, remove from the pan and set aside. 2 SautĂŠ the onion in the bacon juices until soft, then add the garlic, pepper and carrots
and cook for a few minutes.
3 Add the white wine, herbs, turkey and the stock and bring to the boil. 4 Add the rice and spinach, boil for a few minutes. Season to taste. 5 Serve with the crispy bacon sprinkled on top. If the soup is too thick after the rice has been added then just add more stock accordingly. Extra vegetables like sweetcorn could be added or cabbage could be used instead of the spinach..
Enjoy!and Merry Christmas 34

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
What can we possibly be usefully doing in December? With nothing much growing, and the ground sometimes pretty solid, often frosty. It’s when we take our heavy American golf course aerators out and about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining, where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage, and thins-out the root zone which becomes compacted and choked over time. This is mainly about moss control in this part of the world ! You can do this with a garden fork too, but not as effectively obviously as with a machine which actually removes a core of material. I’ve included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre!
Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. Alastair Watt

Review Little Italy is a new Italian Restaurant which opened in Forres a couple of months ago. It sits right on the High Street with easy parking just across the road. (Not too far to walk). Manolo, the restaurant manager, gave us such a warm welcome when we arrived and showed us to our table. We were impressed with how friendly and welcoming the staff were. The restaurant's interior took us right back to our holidays in Italy.
Pepperoni Ripieni We were immediately offered a drink while choosing from the Menu and the Specials Board. As there was plenty of choice on both, this took some time! For starters, Chris chose the Pepperoni Ripieni and I had the Spicy Chicken Strips. When the starters arrived they looked amazing, very colourful and so appetising. I could quite happily have eaten another portion. For our main course, Chris had the Bistecca Diana (Sirloin Steak) and I had the Spezzlino Italiano (an Italian Stew) - strips of beef with
Spezzlino Italiano
potatoes and spaghetti in a sauce. Again both mains had flavours that were just out of this world. For the dessert, Chris had the Cheese Board, with more than enough cheeses to choose from, and I had one of my favourite desserts, Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was probably one of the best I have ever tasted - the balance of the liqueur, coffee and mascarpone, etc was just right. Sheer bliss! I would thoroughly recommend a visit to this restaurant, it is so warm and friendly, the food is just amazing with so much to choose from.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’. Well it has been a stormy and beautiful autumn hasn’t it?! I love the autumn colours and have spent several happy days out with my dog, Solly, enjoying the local hills and forests. I’m also working on three very different and very exciting garden designs at the moment. Now is a great time of year for getting the garden sorted ahead of spring, and is the perfect time for getting trees and shrubs planted. My own garden continues to progress, and I’ve been distracted somewhat by putting together some elaborate bird feeders that now hang outside my kitchen window, giving me a great view of any peckish, feathered friends that drop by. There are a number of jobs to be getting on with in the garden in December. Here are a few DO’s and DON’Ts:
DO use your lawnmower to collect and chop up leaves. Then you can make a leaf-mould pile, or you can put some on your compost. DO plant trees! Now is the best and most effective time to plant trees because you can plant them ‘bare root’ while they are dormant. If you have to prune Birches or Acers, now is the time to do it, before the sap starts rising. Birches in particular do not look good after pruning, and take a couple of years to recover a natural looking form.

DO clean your garden tools, sharpen blades, and take the opportunity to clean and tidy your shed and greenhouse. DO get your garden machinery serviced, this will help ensure it lasts a long time. DON’T forget to keep your bird feeders full, and if you can, make sure there is some water available in a bird bath or shallow pond. DON’T leave your lawnmower sitting all winter with fuel in it. DON’T fertilise your plants or grass. Most plants are having a rest at this time of year – leave them to it! DON’T forget to ensure loose fence panels, gates and empty plant pots are all repaired or secure. In fact look out for anything that might get blown away by winter storms! DON’T forget about your garden until the spring. If you’ve projects that need doing, now is the time to get professionals in to help out before their spring-time diaries fill up!

(1st Samuel 2:3)
Reader, what have you done with Jesus 12:19 which is called Christ? Do you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing? And yet do you not know if you reject the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, you are wretched, and miserable and poor and blind and naked. It is appointed unto you once to die and after this your judgment: what will you do with Jesus?
