We are constantly looking to improve what we put into SpotLight and last month we experimented with a different type of paper which many people felt was a bit cheaper. Although obviously the content didn’t change we do appreciate that the feel of the magazine is also important and we have therefore reverted to the ‘glossier’ feel this month. Experiment over! We have also expanded the number of pages in some of the areas that we go to and added additional (hopefully interesting) editorial. If you feel that you have a good story to tell about a local event or interesting local topic then please let us know - email any suggestions to david@winterburnmedia.co.uk

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Lining up with God’s Will As we move into 2019 , and if you are a Christian, how can you know what God’s will is for your life, or for your family or your church. I read a story recently which I thought had some useful things to say… based on the scripture below. "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord; 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.'"—Jeremiah 29:11-13 The story goes something like this : Born in London and educated at Brighton College, F. B. Meyer made the most of his life
in Christ and travelled throughout the world to preach the good news. Once, while he was crossing the Irish Channel on a dark night, Meyer stood on the deck of the ship, turned to the captain and asked, "How do you know Holyhead Harbour on so dark a night as this?" The captain pointed out three lights on the horizon. "Do you see those three lights? Those three lights must line up behind each other as one, and when we see them so united we know the exact position of the harbour’s mouth." Meyer applied this to the Christian life: "When we want to know the will of God there are three things which always occur; the inward impulse, the Word of God, and the trend of circumstances! God in the

heart, impelling you forward; God in his book corroborating whatever he says in the heart; and God in circumstances, which are always indicative of his will. Never start until these three things agree." As Christians, we often miss God's will because we neglect His Word, ignore His prompting of our heart, or try to plow through circumstances. Are you charting your life's course according to God's will? Today in prayer give thanks that Christ reveals enough of His will so that you can live your life for Him. With very best wishes for the new year.

Words by the Wayside “Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in His salvation.” (Psalm 78:22)
Reader, the greatest sin is not doing our own will, but omitting to do God’s Will. He is not willing that any should perish but that all men and women should repent of their sins and come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. What will all your pleasures and possessions avail you if you have not Jesus Christ as your Saviour? There is peace for you now through Jesus Christ, He is Lord of all.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times After the excesses of the festive period, getting the New Year off to a healthy start is always highly recommended. It’s time for a fresh start and looking to the year ahead as we make our resolutions, full of enthusiasm and positivity. In the Ross household, 2019 is already full of promise as we plan for our new arrival who is due within a matter of weeks. January can be a long month as the weather remains cold, the nights are still long and dark and the excitement of Christmas has worn-off, but it also gives us time to plan ahead. There is a lot to look forward to in Moray over the coming twelve months and plenty to keep us busy locally in 2019. We really are blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the country from the amazing coasts, to superb inland scenes to mountain tops – there is something for everyone in Moray. So this January, why not plan what you’re going to do this year - in Moray - with so much on our doorstep, we really are spoilt for choice! Wishing you all the very best for 2019.

I celebrate two important birthdays in January; my daughter, Rachel, shares a birthday with Robert Burns. I admit it makes me a little proud that as a nation we come together and celebrate the Birthday of a poet. I do not suppose that it is unique, but it is perhaps unusual that a country should take a collective breath and turn its thoughts to poetry in this way. It is two centuries or more since the Bard died, but his words still strike a chord with many of us today. Like many others, I love his poetry. Since our Parliament has reconvened, we have blessed ourselves with marvellous makars, cementing poetry in our consciousness and civic life. Long may this continue!

Happy New Year! I hope that all of my constituents got some rest over the festive period. I’d like to thank all the public sector workers who keep our essential services running and who don’t get time off during the holidays - I am always grateful for everything they do. At the end of last year, the Bank of Scotland announced plans to close branches in Lossiemouth and Keith. The proposed closures are a real blow to the local communities, particularly in Lossiemouth where this is the last remaining back in the town. Moray has been disproportionately hit by bank closures in recent years, with us losing 40% of our local branches since 2010. The closure of these banks has a real impact on those who rely on face to face banking, as well as our local businesses who need access to banking services within the local community. I’ve had discussions with the Bank of Scotland, as well as attending public meetings in the community, and organising petitions to put pressure on the bank to reverse these proposals. We have an uphill struggle to persuade the Bank of Scotland to rethink but the communities can be sure that I will continue to do all I can to support their efforts to retain these local bank branches.

Enquire about our new HNC Acting and Theatre Performance course starting in September 2019*
Out of the Darkness Theatre Company is a self funded Charity and has been committed to providing training opportunities for adults with learning differences in the Theatre Arts Industry since 1992. Our aims and vision remain the same from when we began operating, all those years ago, from a local school hall providing an all-inclusive environment which is non-judgemental, ensuring people with disabilities have a voice. The vision has evolved over the years and has enabled us to grow and expand our services to the people across Moray and the outreach. In August 2018 we moved our premises to The Wards, Elgin, where we now have an enhanced learning facility for everyone wishing to train within the performing arts sector. We operate Monday to Friday, offering various day service groups specialising in Multi Arts, Media, Technical Stage Skills and Performance. All groups collaborate together to produce quality Theatre productions throughout the year for the local and rural areas of the community. Our most recent production was Cinderella, where all groups worked together to produce a sold out Pantomime show throughout December. We also ran a successful Touring Pantomime taking Peter Pan – Captain Hook steals a Moray
Christmas - around 21 Moray Primary Schools, clubs and residential care homes. Our aim, with our touring pantomime, is to give every child the opportunity to access a piece of theatre over the festive season. Since 2012 we have been working in partnership with Moray College UHI delivering an NC Acting and Theatre Performance (SCQF Level 6). This course is delivered at our theatre company in Elgin with the collaboration of the College and aims to develop a range of skills in acting, performance, movement and technical stage skills. The course is suitable for those considering further study in acting and drama at HNC or degree level and those considering employment in the theatre or related industries. Creativity, self-awareness and confidence building, communication and team work are just some of the skills developed in a realistic setting, with students gaining from the experience of working under direction. For more detail go to https://www.moray.uhi.ac.uk/courses/nc-lev el-6-acting-and-theatre-performance
Also we are delighted to announce that from September 2019 we will now be offering an HNC Acting and Theatre Performance course. *subject to approval.
Should you wish to become a member of our day services or to consider enrolling for our NC or HNC for next year, please contact us on 01343 544911 or email social@odtheatre.org.uk for further information. Please like us on facebook @odtheatre to keep up to date with our work throughout the year. charity number: SC020599

atching my resident red squirrel feeding in my garden this morning, I was happy to see that he’d brought along a friend. And a few weeks back, when I first put this feeder up, I derived great enjoyment from watching the squirrel and the rooks all trying to work out how to access the peanuts in this particular feeder. One of the great joys of living in the Highlands is the abundant, wonderful wildlife that we have on our doorstep. A garden well managed for wildlife can bring an enormous amount of enjoyment through the winter months. I find watching the birds in the morning a helpful reminder that there is a whole busy world out there getting on with surviving and living, and in the process helping to dwarf any day-to-day trivial problems that might be distracting me. My one-legged blackbird Bob (because he ‘bobs’ up and down) is a case in point! Immediately outside my kitchen windows I have arranged three bird feeders that hang from various sections of drainpipe, meaning that the birds are inches from my windows. I’ve seen a number of places where people have done this. Some people are even lucky enough to have red squirrels happily feeding at their window.
To ensure wildlife wants to come and visit your garden at any time of the year, you need to make sure you are looking after them through the whole year. That means putting bird food out all year, not just in the winter, though it is obviously more critical for them in the winter. The single best thing you can do for wildlife in your garden is to have a body of water in your garden. If you’re lucky enough to have space for a pond then that’s perfect, but there are other options. I have a mini pond that I have created in an old Belfast sink, with bricks at the side creating an access point for frogs. It is important that the pond has a shallow area so that birds can use it to bathe, and again I have used bricks and stones to create a shallow area. Aquatic plants finish off the essential items, and whatever size pond you have it is best not to have fish if you want to have maximum benefit for wildlife. Other things you can do to create a wildlife-friendly garden are cutting a small hatch in the bottom of your back fence to enable hedgehogs to get in; piles of branches and twigs left to rot down are also a great addition because the woodlice and beetles that make their home become food for larger animals and you have helped create a little garden ecosystem of your own. In a larger garden, leaving areas of longer grass is good thing to do, and if you want to avoid it looking too messy then just mow around the longer grass and it will suddenly become an intentional-looking garden feature. Bird boxes are a great idea too. You can buy ones with cameras in now that allow you to watch the roosting, nesting, feeding and squabbling birds from the comfort of your TV! Sometimes you have to love technology! Hopefully this gives you a few ideas, but there are so many more things you can do to attract wildlife and in turn create a garden with a diverse and exciting ecosystem. Don’t forget that winter is also the best time for planning future projects and carrying out structural changes to your garden. To find out a bit more about what jobs I’ve got on at the moment just head to www.angelhort.com.

Wild Haggis
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye worthy o' a grace As lang's my arm. Address to a Haggis Robert Burns
A fictional wild haggis specimen, Haggis scotticus, as displayed in the Glasgow Kelvingrove Gallery.
Wild haggis (given the humorous taxonomic designation Haggis scoticus) is a fictional creature of Scottish folklore, said to be native to the Scottish Highlands. It is comically claimed to be the source of haggis, a traditional Scottish dish that is in fact made from the innards of sheep (including heart, lungs, and liver). According to some sources, the wild haggis' left and right legs are of different lengths, allowing it to run quickly around the steep mountains and hillsides which make up its natural habitat, but only in one direction. It is further claimed that there are two varieties of haggis, one with longer left legs and the other with longer right legs. The former variety can run clockwise around a mountain, while the latter can run anticlockwise. The two varieties coexist peacefully but are unable to interbreed in the wild because in order for the male of one variety to mate with a female of the other, he must turn to face in the same direction as his intended mate, causing him to lose his balance before he can mount her. As a result of this difficulty, differences in leg length among the haggis population are accentuated.
Haggis abroad The notion of the wild haggis is widely believed, though not always including the idea of mismatched legs. According to an online survey, commissioned by haggis manufacturers Hall's of Broxburn, released on 26 November 2003, one-third of U.S. visitors to Scotland believed the wild haggis to be a real creature. Wikipedia.com
How to hunt Wild Haggis First, be sure to identify whether the creature you are stalking is a clockwise or anti-clockwise variety. Dig a large hole in which to hide and then, as it approaches, leap up and yell, "BOOOO!!" in its face as loudly as your lungs permit (It will be noted that facing in the wrong direction at this point would be rather ineffectual, hence the importance of pre-determining the rotational preference of the intended prey). Correct application will cause the animal to take fright, recoil and turn to attempt to run in the opposite direction, the consequences of which will be immediately apparent. While it is still stunned from rolling downhill, simply pick it up (assuming that you have managed to keep pace with its rate of descent and reach it before it has recovered), whack it over the head with your walking stick and pop it into your backpack.
Other Info Wild Haggis do exist, It is rare to catch on camera, but when it does happen, the flash from the camera causes them to create a loud screech, which tends to attract a Giant Bagpipe Spider or two. http://strangeanimals.wikia.com

I need a new bum!
Made in Scotland
By Dawn McMillan
By Billy Connolly After my knighthood was announced, a woman from the BBC came to Glasgow to interview me. We sat down in a lovely hotel in a nice part of town, and she hit me with her first question: "This must mean a lot to you, with you coming from nothing?" Scotland is a unique and wonderful place. Its national motto says a lot about it: Nemo me impune lacessit. A decent translation might be: `By all means punch me in the nose but prepare yourself for a kick in the arse.' I did'nae come from nothing: I come from Scotland. And this book is about why I will always be happy and proud that I do.'
A young boy suddenly notices a big problem - his bum has a huge crack! So he sets off to find a new one. Will he choose an armour-plated bum? A rocket bum? A robot bum? Find out in this silly, quirky tale with hilarious illustrations.

And on 9 October 2012, she nearly paid the ultimate price for her courage when she was shot on her way home from school. The extraordinary, true story of a young girl's courage in the face of violence and extremism, and an incredible testament to what can be achieved when we stand up for what we believe in.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Our small team of 4 based here in the Moray Firth, will no doubt have a busy year ahead.as usual. I should also give a mention to Susie, the springer spaniel, who I don’t think has been properly introduced. Many of you will have met her though, as she goes everywhere with us – mad as a box of frogs !
Brought to you by:
leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, can cause devastation.
Spring Months Weedkill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Recently, spring has been very late.
Summer Months
Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include:
Winter Months NOW Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for
Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1”. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages moss to flourish ! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst).
Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Reader, don’t walk away from the mercy of God demonstrated in Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross of Calvary for your sin. Christ died for the ungodly, it is only the ungodly Christ can save, for He came to save sinners and if you don’t acknowledge you are a sinner and have need of a Saviour, you can never be saved from the penalty of your sins. Behold, Now is the accepted time for you. Behold Now is the day of salvation.

Crafty Corner NAIL VARNISH MARBLED COASTERS Materials needed for this project: s Nail polish s Disposable container s Tepid water s Tiles s Wooden sticks s Disposable gloves s Nail polish remover – for clean up Here’s how you make this project: Before you start you want to cover your work area with scrap paper as nail varnish can be tricky to clean off. . Fill your container with a couple of inches of tepid water. Begin dropping in the polish. The first colour to hit the water will span out over the whole surface, so beginning with a light colour is best. Continue to add colours to your desire. However, you must work fast. You want to hold your polish close to the surface so that it doesn’t hit the water too hard and just drop to the bottom. Quickly use a toothpick or wooden skewer to make swirls. Be sure to glide around just the surface of the water, if you poke too far into the water the polish will stick onto the skewer and the polish will ball up. (The polish hardens when the skewer is too far into the water.) Then take your tile and dip it into the water with the tile facing down. If you want to cover the whole tile then dip it in as flat as you can so as to not cause any air bubbles. Lif t out the tile and slowly turn it over and let it air dry for a few hours. Once the tile is completely dry, spray with a sealant to make it heat safe. Then cut out squares of felt and use double sided tape to stick them to the bottom of the tile to prevent them scratching surfaces.
