173 years ago on 4th July 2018 Thomas John Barnardo was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of a furrier - a strongly religious family originally from Germany. By his twenties, Barnardo started opening schools for orphans left destitute by an outbreak of Cholera and by the time of his death at the age of 60 his organisation looked after 8,500 children in 96 locations. Barnardo’s still exists today of course and was recently quoted as running some 900 local services and is reckoned to be the largest UK children’s charity spending some £200m per annum. Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings It’s a time of year when, hopefully, we can enjoy this beautiful part of the world and, if we’re able, get outside and walk. Walking (at whatever speed is possible for us, with whatever help we need) is not only a sustainable way of getting from A to B, but it can give us time and space to reflect – on our own or with others. Walking is good for our health. That may be obvious in physical health (how many of us now go around with step counters to make sure we keep active?). For me walking is crucial to keeping me mentally healthy – getting outside, having space to think, or sometimes switching off the noise in my mind. I also believe that walking is good for our spiritual wellbeing. I was struck recently by a reflection I heard on part of the story of the prophet Elijah. You can find the whole story in the Bible in 1 Kings chapters 17 to 19. In the name of God, Elijah takes on the King and Queen and their prophets, and God and Elijah win. But after the showdown Elijah flees for his life, sinking into despair. He curls up under a tree in the wilderness and hopes he won’t wake
up. There, God is with Elijah in very gentle ways: letting him sleep, sending him food, until he has more strength. Then they go for a walk together – a very long walk – for 40 days. Elijah thinks he’s on his own, with no-one on his side, yet God is with him in his despair, God lets him rest and be fed, and God quietly accompanies him on a walk. Only after all of that do they then talk about what’s to happen next. Elijah walks on his own, in silence – but never alone, God is with him through everything. God promises that for each of us too – God is with us in everything, however alone we seem. We can also gain lots from walking and journeying with other people. The New Testament stories of Jesus and the early church are full of journeys with significant encounters. These were sometimes very surprising, because Jesus was willing to journey to places others wouldn’t go, and he was always engaging with people others wouldn’t talk to. Jesus travelled across borders, he talked to women, to Samaritans, to disruptive children, to those with challenging medical conditions, to occupiers and

traitors, and to anyone who wanted to meet him. And as he walked, and wherever he stopped, he listened, talked and shared good news with people. In the walking, in the listening, in the hospitality given and received, in all the ways journeys help us encounter one another, lives are changed. You may enjoy a walk, or you may be reliant on others to push a wheelchair. You may manage a few steps or be training for the Moonwalk. You may have access to the beauty of the countryside or be restricted to your living room. But I hope that this summer you may find that you can walk with others, sharing stories and hospitality and finding hope. And I hope that however you walk, whatever your journey, you know that you never walk alone – God is with you every moment, whatever you need. Rev Jenny Adams, Minister of Duffus, Spynie & Hopeman Church of Scotland

Words by the Wayside “...and as many as touched Him were made whole.” (Mark 6:56)
Reader, the Lord Jesus made people ‘whole’ when they accepted that they needed help and that they could not help themselves. They touched Him. Salvation is not complicated. We need to accept that we need help and trust Him to make us ‘whole’ – to heal us from the fatal disease called sin. We need to admit that we are sinners deserving of God’s wrath and that we cannot save ourselves. Only by believing that Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross was for us, and trusting Him, will we be made whole and have peace with God. The Lord Jesus says to you now, ‘Come unto me’.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The clock is ticking on sellers who impose unfair delivery charges on people in Moray, just because of our postcode. I recently contacted online retailer Amazon who I spoke with after a Scottish Affairs Committee where they gave evidence on this unfair practice. I have been passing on cases of constituents faced with extra delivery costs, despite the goods being advertised with free UK delivery. The retailer has made it clear to third party sellers that this is not an acceptable practice. I have been in touch with them again after it transpired that a resident in Hopeman was slapped with delivery charge of £70 for a product that costs less than a fiver. Clearly this shocking charge to deliver to Moray was in breach of Amazon’s code of conduct. After I raised this case with Amazon they investigated and concluded that the seller acted outwith their new code of practice, warned them and the correct delivery charge is now advertised. I’m encouraged by the cross-party efforts to address this issue and I will continue to fight this until retailers get the message loud and clear. In Moray we say no to unfair delivery charges.

As Minister for Childcare & Early Years, I am absolutely delighted that 2018 is Scotland’s Year of Young People. This is a global first – a ground-breaking, themed year that will celebrate all our young people in Scotland, wherever they live. Events are already underway across Scotland and there are loads of great opportunities for young folk to get involved here in the Highlands. You can find out information about events happening in your areas here: yoyp2018.scot. If there is one aspiration that I hope we might share for 2018, it is to ensure that our young people feel and believe that they are valued, wanted and vital to our country’s future and that their voices are heard and listened to.

For the last few years I have been working side by side with local ambulance staff to campaign for an increase in resources in Moray, so I was extremely pleased that the Scottish Ambulance Service has announced is set to recruit eight new ambulance staff locally. Moray’s ambulance crews have been under significant pressure over the last few years due to an increase in demand for services and more hospital transfers having to be carried out between Dr Gray’s and ARI. Over recent years, I’ve been regularly meeting SAS management and raising this campaign at the highest levels of government to support the local ambulance staff, so I’m delighted that our efforts have paid off. These additional posts, alongside the end to call working at Dufftown have the potential to really transform the service in Moray and will help deliver the best possible care for patients. Our local ambulance staff deserve a huge amount of credit for the work they’ve put in to making the case for increased resources, their sustained efforts and determination have been central to improvements being delivered.

SpotLIGHT Garden
Brought to you by:
Watering Lawns – in Scotland - really? Yes really, especially along the sandy soils and low rainfall of the Moray coast. The last two springs have seen prolonged dry spells in our area, and this is not unusual. We often get prolonged high pressure influence at this time of year, which cuts off the prevailing westerly fronts coming in off the Atlantic. It might not always seem warm and dry as we sometimes get a cold haar coming ashore. But even then, any rainfall amounts can be negligible. Watering lawns is important at this time for a number of reasons. They will quickly turn brown and dry looking, as do golf course fairways and rough, and other public grassed areas, Lawns are trying to wake-up after a winter hibernation and may have been traumatised by scarifying and raking activity in the off-season. Many gardeners will put down a spring feed (as do GreenThumb) and this will need activated by watering. No watering, and nothing much will happen. Many of you will have sprinklers, but they are usually in the garage! Get them out and hook them up. Most lawns will appreciate a watering for 20 mins each evening so they stay damp through the night. Daytime watering is of less
value as more is lost to evaporation. Nowadays, you can readily buy a timer for £20 which will automatically turn sprinklers and hoses on and off. In Scotland, our water consumption is paid for in our community charge. In England, typically water is metered and charged for. We are lucky, it’s pre-paid, so why not use it. GreenThumb also have a Water Conserver product which can significantly increase the time water molecules are held in the lawn. It works on a similar principle to products for planters and hanging baskets. There are more details on the website at www.greenthumb.co.uk.
You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society). Alastair Watt
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Forres Highland Games 2018
Colin Manson - Chieftain Forres Highland Games, an annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport, music and entertainment, takes place on Saturday 7th July 2018 in Grant Park in Forres. Proceedings get under way at 12.30 pm with the Opening Ceremony. This year is the 90th anniversary of the first ever Forres Highland Games and with the exception of some of the years during WW2 the Games have been held in Grant Park annually each summer ever since. The concept of the initial 1928 committee known then as Forres & District Amateur Athletic Association was to hold a summer event to promote sports, traditional culture and give the people of the local area a fun day out. Today the Games still promote those values and are as popular and well supported as ever. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain local farmer Mr Colin Manson. Colin grew up and went to school in the local area and is widely known in farming circles throughout the North of Scotland. He has been a long standing supporter and helper of Forres Highland Games over the past two decades.
During the afternoon the pipe bands will be competing for best march and smartest turnout. The highlight of the afternoon is the Massed Pipe Bands marching around the arena to the skirl do the pipes and swish do the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one definitely for the photo album. There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent. Forres Highland Games are a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Reg Charity No : SC046639). The staging of the Games is only achievable through the dedication of the unpaid hard working Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses. Scotland is celebrating the Year of Young People 2018 and in support of this the Games hope to have a local Junior Chieftain in their midst on Games Day. The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering. Local highland games have over many years been a nurturing ground for developing young athletes who have gone on to represent their country at international athletics meetings such as The Commonwealth Games.

Later spectators are invited to have a go in a visitor’s race. The Tug-o-War competition is another crowd pleaser with local teams competing for the Harry Troup Trophy.

We look back with yesteryears’ fancy dress, magicians and a nostalgic party tunes disco. We Look forward with nerf wars, some new music talents and have a science afternoon with rocket cars and explosions. In the Scottish year of the young person we celebrate with two young citizens and we are encouraging positive youth participation through Saltire awards. Please feel free to keep up to date with Hopeman’s Gala by searching, following and liking us through Twitter, Facebook or our own website and by signing up for emails. Adult Fiction
Strange Neeting By Susan Hill Set in WWI, a young officer returns to the Front to find his division almost unrecognisable. His commanding officer is an alcoholic, there is a new adjutant and several of his close friends have been killed. But there is David Barton. As yet untouched and unsullied by war, fresh-faced and radiating charm. As the pair approach the front line, bloodied by the deaths of their fellow soldiers, their friendship deepens. But as the reality of the violence sets in, the men know that they will soon be separated... A poignant novel on human love as war and the pity of war.

From helping readers identify the enemy, to safeguarding the vulnerable areas of their lives, the impact of anxiety is examined, and readers given some tools to fight back - whether with medication, therapy, CBT, coping techniques, or simply with a dark sense of humour.

MAKING LIFESTYLE CHOICES IS ONE THING BUT MAKING CHOICES THAT CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE IS QUITE ANOTHER. At Care À La Carte, we believe our clients should be the architects of their own care plans, which simply means you can shape the care relationship you want with the way you want to live. All our care staff are exceptional, carefully screened and specially selected not only for their professional skills but also for their human generosity. We strongly believe it’s these characteristics which create personal chemistry, as well as regard and respect which make for a great working relationship. THERE’S NO UPPER LEVEL OF SERVICE, So you might just need someone to pop round for a cup of tea and provide some welcome company from time to time or, provide the support you need to get out of your home, for a day trip, or even a holiday? On the other hand, you might want to receive a more personalised medical relationship, to help you deal with the challenges that life has presented you. In this regard, we would work with you and your medical advisors to agree the ideal plan to help you make the very best of your situation. You will be the one driving your own care agenda. We can provide routine care and support of a few hours a day, to nurse led complex care packages of up to 24 hours a day.

This supplies nutrients that will stimulate plants’ roots, without creating lots of lush new foliage. The danger with stimulating foliage growth from mid-summer onwards is that tender leaves get hit by early frosts.

ooking out on my garden as I write this, I am enjoying the spectacle of a very happy Clematis montana, a vigorous deciduous climber that is looking great this year. It is funny how garden plants can have good and bad years, and a timely reminder for me not to panic when some of my other plants are not doing so well. It seems that some plants enjoyed the cold winter we had – some internal plant processes actually require a cold winter to stimulate growth and flowering in a process known as vernalisation. Other plants in my garden are not having their finest years, but I am keeping them watered and fed and am keeping the faith that they will come back stronger than ever in time. However, ever-watchful of pests and diseases, I do a daily tour of the garden to keep an eye on any issues that might suggest a deeper problem. I recently made the discovery that rabbits enjoy eating my Rudbeckia fulgida, so that adds to the list of purchases I will not be making again! In the months of spring I happily add nitrogen fertiliser to my garden, in the form of granules and also well-rotted horse manure. However, from July I stop this and will only apply less nitrogen-heavy fertilisers such as bonemeal.

Finally, a few tips for your lawn. During the height of the growing season you may find you need to mow your lawns weekly, but as July moves on you will find growth slowing. Regardless, the key rule is not to let the weeds set seed, and leaving a gap of over two weeks between cuts normally means this happens. If weeds set seed they will gradually outcompete the grass plants in your lawn. In times of dry weather, do not forget to raise the blades on your mower to reduce stress on the lawn. (Indeed, it is best not to cut your grass too short generally for the same reason). In times of wet weather, don’t worry too much about not mowing damp grass with your petrol mower. If it needs doing, just cut it – any muddy marks or tears to the grass are only temporary, and unless you’re wanting a super-formal lawn you do not need to worry too much. To find out more about what I am up to you will find me on Instagram or you can follow my blog which you will find at
