The Editor

Just ever so occasionally we see heartwarming examples of unity. I’m a bit of a rugby fan and by the time you read this the British and Irish Lions will have departed these shores for a 10 match tour of New Zealand. The squad draws from Scotland, Ireland (both Eire and Northern Ireland), Wales and England. The players need to bond together, respecting different nationalities but working together to achieve a common goal. New Zealand are currently ranked the number one team in the World by some distance and only by working together might they be overcome. Good luck The Lions!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The Hambletonian Horror I spent a few days holiday earlier in the year in Northern Ireland. It was good to return to the place where I was born and raised, and to enjoy comparing the way things are now with my memories of growing up. Despite the aura of nostalgia that surrounds those former times, I was able to appreciate some of the good things that are now enjoyed by the people that were certainly absent from my early experiences. There is a new found pride in the diverse and shared cultural inheritance, embodied, for example, in the new Titanic Quarter development with its outstanding exhibition in a thriving capital city. One shining light in this renaissance is the newly refurbished Mount Stewart House on the shores of Strangford Lough. It was the Irish seat of the Vane-Tempest-Stewart family, Marquesses of Londonderry and is now owned by the National Trust. The greatest treasure in the house is without doubt the 1800 painting of the race horse Hambletonian, Hambletonian, Rubbing Down, by George Stubbs. Stubbs was commissioned by Sir Henry Vane-Tempest to paint the great race horse which had just defeated Joseph Cookson’s Diamond in a winner-takes-all wager of 3,000 guineas. The race between the two leading horses of the day took place at Newmarket on 25 March 1799 and

attracted a huge crowd. The race itself lasted for only eight minutes, and for most of the four-mile course the result hung in the balance; it was only in the final yards that Hambletonian moved into the lead to win by a short head. Both horses received a cruel beating from their jockeys’ whips and spurs throughout the race. Vane-Tempest eagerly awaited Stubbs’ paintings of the victorious horse. He had commissioned two; one to show the horse winning the race and the other to depict the horse being rubbed down. Stubbs began and completed the latter first, but Sir Henry was far from pleased with the final result. In fact he was so disgusted by it that he refused to pay the fee. We can only surmise about the reason for his displeasure, but even a casual look at the painting tells a story. Stubbs painted the horse being rubbed down after the race clearly in a state of agitation and discomfort. The arm of the stable boy holding the horse is strangely out of proportion, reaching almost half way down the great horse’s back. Likewise the legs of the trainer were painted unusually short. These strange details were the work of a master painter; they were not mistakes. In fact they serve the purpose of momentarily drawing the eye away from the horse, creating a sense of disorientation in the viewer, which in turn sets in relief the sense of pain that the exhausted horse was feeling. that Stubbs, disturbed by the cruelty that the horse endured in the winning of the race, wanted to convey his displeasure? It certainly seems that way. The Church celebrates the promise of Christ to send the Holy Spirit on Sunday 4th June, the day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit brings the way of Jesus to us. We often sing the great hymn of George Job Elvey, Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne. It is important that we do not forget that Christ reigns as the suffering Lord, the lamb who was slain. His resurrection body continues to bear the marks of his cruel death and so it must be expected that those who seek to follow his way will be called to bear their sufferings too. Stubbs taught Sir Henry Vane-Tempest a lesson. Victory was achieved at a cost. The pain and suffering of the horse were its marks of victory. We must not try to distort the picture, but instead to realise that “for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials” (1 Peter 1:6) and ultimately this will be the proof of our faith this Pentecost and beyond. Business Profile

Moray is home to Scotland’s first specialist shade and home automation company which offers state of the art blinds and smart home products that can be remotely controlled via your phone. Cascade Blinds, based in Elgin’s Chanonry Road South, is also the north’s first Somfy Tahoma dealer, offering a wide selection of products that can be operated via any flash enabled smart phone, tablet or smartwatch using an intuitive app. The independent company was established in Inverness in 1987. It was bought over by the McCrea family four years ago, and run alongside their Inverness window blind superstore, World of Blinds. Owner, David McCrea said: “We’re keen to do something special with Cascade and with the growing demand for automated and motorised window coverings, and on it’s 30th anniversary, our direction became clear; we have launched the business from our new Moray office. We have now secured the desirable Luxaflex dealership, offering exclusive products and systems, and an awnings and canopies range. Motorisation means you can schedule the opening and closing of your blinds, curtains, awnings, garage doors, gates, velux products and security systems from one easy to use app.” The app means that you can create a cosy home environment before you even get there, as well as boost your home security: “Using a timer means you can give the impression that your home is occupied even if you have been delayed at work or are on holiday. It is without a doubt the way forward,” David continued. Cascade Blinds also offers bolt-on products including smart switches, smoke detectors, light sensors and security devices such as cameras and motion sensors. The Moray showroom offers free advice and consultation to ensure you can choose the best soft furnishing and window styling for your home. “The first consideration is deciding what your room requires. For example, does the light need softening, filtering, or blocked out completely. We offer a huge range of benefits, including exclusive patterns and designs that can create a warm, comfortable and striking environment – and they’re combined with world leading technology. A major benefit for this next generation of shade systems is that the looped cords and chains have been eliminated which removes risk for young children and vulnerable people. “We have been involved in the window styling industry for many years, and with the latest trends moving rapidly towards automation, we find this an interesting challenge from a manufacturing perspective, and also a very exciting time in the history of window coverings,” David concluded.

Cascade Blinds is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 11am to 5pm, Wednesday 10am to 2pm, and Saturday 10am to 3pm. Contact:Cascade Blinds, 9 Chanonry Road South, Elgin, IV30 6NG- T: 01343 552 222 www.cascadeblinds.co.uk

Words by the Wayside "The Lord was ready to save me" (Isaiah 38:20)

Reader, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. He is a wonderful and a willing Personal Saviour. The Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance and faith in His Son Jesus Christ. God would have all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth; that they are sinners and Christ Jesus is their only Saviour. Confront yourself with your own sins, your unworthiness before God, then see the love of God in Christ Jesus. The Lord is ready to save you, but you must come to Him.

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.

Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered a complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package

Entertainment

THE DROUTHY COBBLER

It’s been a busy month starting with the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, which saw thousands of visitors arrive in Speyside to experience over 500 whisky themed events. We now head into the Summer with some of the best music & comedy from around the country, performing live at The Drouthy Cobbler. For music fans, the month starts off with Douglas MacGregor & Toby Hay on the 1st. Two extremely talented guitar players, they each play a different style of music. Douglas’ influences come from all over the world and include blues, folk, jazz and classical, whilst Toby is a more traditional folk musician, yet still influenced by world music, as well as that of his native Wales. On the 8th, acclaimed folk singer Jenny Sturgeon will be performing songs from her impressive debut album, ‘From The Skein’. Her traditional Scottish music and lyrics inspired by folklore, historical events and personal experience, have received rave reviews from around the country. Chris Sesar & Gill Halliday (11th) are a pair of up and coming singer song-writers, blending Celtic folk and roots & country music with a brush of gypsy jazz. This will be an excellent night of songs with some of the best harmonies around. For those looking for something a little louder, Twin Heart and The Belafonte will be performing on the 16th. Kilmarnock’s Twin Heart will kick things off in phenomenal style with their intoxicating brand of alternative rock. More alt-rock from Ayrshire trio The Belafonte will top the bill. The monthly Comedy Club (28th) will once again feature the best in Scottish comedy, featuring a variety of styles and acts. And with the Edinburgh Fringe fast approaching, there will be some preview shows, for comedians to hone their act before stepping on stage at one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals. The first of these is on the 4th of June when Liam Withnail & Gareth Waugh will be performing their shows ‘The Immigration Game’, about discovering the true cost of love in the United Kingdom; and ‘Honestly?’, a show all about lying and honesty. One mic must be the truth and the other only lies... but can you tell which is which? Tickets for all of these events are available at The Drouthy Cobbler and at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk Please be aware that while live comedy can often be hilarious, it is also highly subjective and some material might not be to your tastes!

Words by the Wayside "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whosoever confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."

Sticks ‘n’ Stoves BEST PRICES

(Proverbs 28:13)

Reader, repentance is not being sorry for yourself and your circumstances, but being sorry to God through Jesus Christ because you are a sinner and have repeatedly sinned against Him. Don't put the problem of sin in your life into the background but be truthful with yourself, be truthful with God. Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Trust Him, follow Him, love Him. No man or woman is ever a lost cause to Jesus Christ.

Carer-Friendly Moray - celebrate our communities In Scotland, 17% of the adult population is a carer, saving the economy £10.3 billion a year – the equivalent of a second NHS. Here in Moray, almost 8000 people provide unpaid care to a family member or friend who depends upon them because of physical or mental ill health, disability, frailty or substance use. You might be one of them, or know someone who is. Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) is here to support you. Carers can be any age, gender, nationality or profession. You may be full-time or part-time. You may have chosen to provide care, or have found the role thrust onto you unexpectedly, either suddenly or over a period of time. And you may often wonder how you ended up where you are! Carers Week is a national event which celebrates and recognises the vital contribution made by the 6.5 million people across the UK who currently provide unpaid care for family member or friend. Between 12-18 June, events will be taking place all around the UK to involve carers and make them aware of the support available. Taking the theme Building Carer Friendly Communities, the week focuses on creating communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own.

National research shows three in four carers don’t feel that their caring role is understood or valued by their community. Here in Moray, Quarriers will be joining with other members of the Carer Service Providers Network to host an event at Elgin Town Hall on Wednesday 14 June, 9.30am-3pm. With a mix of speakers, workshops and taster activities, the event offers something for everyone. This event will include the Carer Friendly Moray Awards, recognising people and organisations that have made the lives of carers easier. You are invited to nominate individuals, businesses, groups and service providers who have demonstrated they value you and your caring role. Print off a nomination form at http:// RQOLQH ĴLSKWPO FRP DZ]F GVSU , one for each nomination you want to make, and send it in to Quarriers by Friday 2 June. You can also ask for a copy to be emailed or posted to you by calling Quarriers on 01343 or emailing carersmoray@ quarriers.org.uk. 7KUHH LQ ijYH RI XV ZLOO KDYH D FDULQJ role at some point. 4. Fragrance Oils

While the wax is melting you can get your tea cup ready!, Place your candle wick in the centre and hold in place with the wooden utensils, Handy tip: you can tape down your untensils to keep the candle wick firmly in place.

Before cooling, pour in your fragrance into the wax using manufacturer’s guide or 2 tablespoons, BEWARE: avoid over-stirring your wax when you add the fragrance, Lightly stir 10 times in one direction and 10 times in the other, over-stirring can cause cracks in the wax once it sets!

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Red Thread (Yellow Be Aware Warning) ! We often have an outbreak of Red Thread fungal disease in this area now. It’s pretty widespread in this part of the world from June onwards, and especially if it is mild and wet. It’s a fungus, like moulds or mildews, and in the right conditions can attack grass leaves causing blotchy brown patches that leaves the lawn looking like it is drought stressed. Clearly if it’s been wet, that’s not the case. The picture below was taken previously on my lawn in late June.

If it’s a persistent outbreak, you can often see the grass producing a pinkish mould growth. That’s the mycelium or fungal bloom from the Red Thread spores. It doesn’t usually kill the grass, but it damages and disfigures the leaf causing a rather unsightly blotchy browning-off effect. Once established, the infection will usually persist through the season until the first frosts in October, when the frost kills it off for the year.

I mention it now as it CAN be successfully treated with a fungicide, and when we apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns, it usually clears it in a week or so. Occasionally a repeat application is required. Once control is established however, it usually keeps the grass free of the infection for the rest of the season. You can get more information and pics at www.greenthumb.co.uk, or at www.rhs.org.uk (Royal Horticultural Society)..

For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area.
