Civil Rights is in the news at the moment and is something close to my heart. I have never quite understood why the colour of one’s skin or the country of one’s birth should dictate how one is treated. Here is a poem by Langston Hughes, US Civil Rights activist (1902-1967) a contemporary of Martin Luther King.

Dreams Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.

Words by the Wayside “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25)

Reader, God never holds anyone responsible for not doing that which they cannot do. If He did, that would make God unrighteous. If you have not received God’s Salvation, found alone in His Son Jesus Christ, it is not because you cannot, but because you will not! If you confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ He is faithful and just to forgive you your sins, and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Christ died for the ungodly!

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Then Jesus took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." (Mark 9:36-37) One of our local schools recently had a “World of Work Week” where they invited a number of people to speak to the children about their work. They invited a variety of people, an artist, a policewoman and a doctor amongst others. I was also asked to come and present to the pupils aspects of my work as a Church Minister in the Methodist Church. It was an informative morning, particularly for myself. Listening to youngsters in different classes of different primary age groups question you about your daily work can be somewhat of a challenge and a revelation. I’m not sure whether the Apostle Peter had this mind when he wrote: Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have (1 Peter 3:15). However, it was a delight to share openly with these youngsters the role I play in the their community. When asked what they thought that I did,

these were some of their replies: “You tell people about Jesus”; “You pray a lot and read the Bible”; “you stand up on Sundays and sing songs about God”, “you help people get better in hospital”… it was a long list, but a good list. And it challenged me inwardly to recognise the expectations they as young people had, of me, a much older person, but having what they saw as an important role in the community. So what is it that the Church and by extension, Christians, bring to our local communities? I return again to the Jesus of the gospels and the radical way in which Jesus responded to those that came into contact with him. The verse at the beginning of this piece that alludes to us becoming like little children is a response to the disciples debate as to who was the greatest. The world around us is one seemingly built on human ambition, to be someone, to succeed in life, to make a mark, to be remembered. Jesus however, taught that one must first become a servant to others (Matthew 20:26). I would suggest the role of the Christian is to reflect Jesus, to live a life where the intentional trajectory of one’s life is to become more Christlike. John Wesley called this ‘sanctification’ and by

extension implied that salvation is a process not an event. Our whole lives are to lived in order to be Christ’s hands in our communities, to create an awareness of God’s presence, to grow and learn through mutual love and support of each other, to be a good neighbour to those in need, to fight injustice, and through these love inspired activities to attract others to be followers of that same Jesus who challenged us to become like little children. It was challenging to listen to the children at the school, and to answer their questions as to what it means to be a Church Minister and Christian in their community. I pray that I can bring the hope of Jesus into their lives and into their communities by my actions and my love of Jesus. One of my favourite verses in the Bible is John 10:10 where Jesus says that he came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I believe that Jesus’ message is for everybody and that the abundant life he offers is available to all who want to become and live as his disciples. AMEN Rev Chris Jackson Buckie & Cullen

Parliament Blog & Tide Times Concerns about NHS Grampian continue to feature heavily in my postbag and the recent news that the children’s ward in Elgin was once again going to close to overnight admissions was a further blow to the local area. We are trying to attract people to Moray as a shortage of medical staff is one of the reasons for the situation in the children’s ward, but Moray will seem a less attractive option if these important services are reduced or lost altogether. As well as the children’s ward, we have excessive waits for the eye clinic, chronic pain waiting times are unacceptable and a number of cases I have raised on behalf of local people have been responded to by both NHS Grampian and Scottish Government Ministers confirming the treatment delivered was unacceptable and fell below the standards we should expect. Given the growing concern locally about a variety of NHS issues I have asked NHS Grampian to join me at a public meeting in Moray to explain the current situation and their future plans. Local people deserve to hear directly from NHS managers about what they plan to do to ensure we all get appropriate health care in the local area. I will advertise details of the meeting in the local media when NHS Grampian confirm who will be attending.

We have reached that time of the year again when people from all around the world visit Scotland to experience our Highland Games. We are very fortunate to have so many Games on our doorstep with the Gordon Castle Highland Games, at Fochabers, being the first of the season on 20th May. In recent years our Highland Games have been very successful in attracting more and more tourists, a trend we should all celebrate. However, if you would like to avoid the big crowds I would encourage you to visit some of the smaller and community-run Highland Games. One of my favourites happens to be the Strathconon Games, held on 28th July. It has a warm family feel and where all the profits from the Games go towards the upkeep of the Village Hall. Visiting hidden gems like the Strathconon Games is also a great way to support local communities.

This month is the return of one of my favourite events of the year; the award winning Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. The festival is a wonderful celebration of our whisky industry, our food and drink sector, our music and culture, and all that is good about Speyside. The festival goes from strength to strength and each year I continue to be blown away be the exceptional programme of events. As well as being vital to our economy, the Speyside whisky is also at the very heart of our culture and our local heritage and in my view, we cannot celebrate that enough. Spirit of Speyside is an opportunity for visitors and locals to join together in celebrating our music, culture and heritage, in the splendour of Speyside and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

Create and store your own solar energy The Tesla Energy Powerwall 2 stores up to 13.5 kWh of excess solar energy during daylight hours when your home electricity usage is low, then discharges in the evening during those high usage/peak times saving you money. The Powerwall can be installed with new Solar PV systems or can be retrofitted to existing PV systems. A home battery system protects homeowners from future electricity price increases and reduce reliance on the national grid.

About AES Solar Established in 1979, AES Solar are the oldest solar company in Western Europe and have completed solar thermal and PV installations all over the world. We proudly manufacture our range of solar thermal panels in Forres and our aim is to make Scotland the solar capital of the world.

MAKING LIFESTYLE CHOICES IS ONE THING BUT MAKING CHOICES THAT CAN IMPROVE YOUR LIFE IS QUITE ANOTHER. At Care À La Carte, we believe our clients should be the architects of their own care plans, which simply means you can shape the care relationship you want with the way you want to live. All our care staff are exceptional, carefully screened and specially selected not only for their professional skills but also for their human generosity. We strongly believe it’s these characteristics which create personal chemistry, as well as regard and respect which make for a great working relationship. THERE’S NO UPPER LEVEL OF SERVICE, So you might just need someone to pop round for a cup of tea and provide some welcome company from time to time or, provide the support you need to get out of your home, for a day trip, or even a holiday? On the other hand, you might want to receive a more personalised medical relationship, to help you deal with the challenges that life has presented you. In this regard, we would work with you and your medical advisors to agree the ideal plan to help you make the very best of your situation. You will be the one driving your own care agenda. We can provide routine care and support of a few hours a day, to nurse led complex care packages of up to 24 hours a day.
