Am I the only person in the world who is just getting a bit weary of “celebrities? I have no issue at all with people who have excelled in their chosen field be it in creative arts, sporting excellence, business achievements, scientific developments or other worthy fields of expertise but it seems to me that many of our “celebrities are just drawn from tv. Don’t get me wrong - I like watching tv it is entertaining and relaxing but surely we can find a better “barometer of celebrity status. Maybe not though!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS A story! I know a monk, who, because of many temptations said, ‘I will go away from here.’ As he laced his sandals, he saw another monk also lacing up his sandals, and this other said to him, ‘Is it on my account that you are going? Because I go before you wherever you walk’. (1: Mother Theodora of Egypt (340 - c410) November is one of those months that is difficult: There is All Souls Day (when we remember the loved ones we have lost); Remembrance Sunday (when we recall those who have lost their lives in two World Wars and the conflicts of the 20th & 21st Century); the pressure of Christmas is approaching; and to cap it all the darkness of the nights continues to deepen! We might, very much, feel like the monk and want to run away… far away. Wait! Mother Theodora has wisdom. She realised that wherever we run to, we will take our problems with us, for the other monk represents our other self. The self that gets things wrong, makes mistakes, and perhaps even gets angry. In other words, the side of us that annoys us!
We need to find ‘Stillness’ in our lives. To achieve this we need to detach ourselves from material things, and from the pursuit of our passions and desires. Only then will we find the ‘Stillness’ that comes from God. In ‘Stillness’ we are able to find God within us. He is deep in our heart, our Soul. If we stand still: Take deep controlled breaths. We will find “the peace of God that passes all understanding.”In the Stillness we will find Silence, and in the ‘Silence,’ there waits God. (2: Philippians 4:7) I wonder how many have said they have never met with God? Is it because they have never been still? We should be like an astute business person: making Stillness our criteria for testing the value of everything, and always choosing what contributes to it. If you stand on the banks of the river Lossie notice how still the Heron stands. Whether the water is flowing fast or slow he is like a statue. Waiting. Waiting. For the moment when he will use his energy and skill to gain his prize. This is how we should be as we approach this forthcoming season. We should adopt the Stillness of the Heron. The

waters of life maybe turbulent and the memories of this season painful. Yet, by finding God in the Stillness, and being still. All will be well. We will know our goal, and we will achieve it! We will not need to run away, only to discover ourselves there too! This is why the Psalmist writes: “Be still, and know that I am God.” (3: Psalm 46:10) In achieving this Stillness we will discover another charism of God – Humility as Mother Theodora said. How that changes our attitude towards each other! Another gift that the people of this world desperately need. May God walk with you, and Bless you during this dark season of memory, and business. With love in Christ. Christopher Ketley Rector of Holy Trinity, Elgin & St. Margaret’s, Lossiemouth (Scottish Episcopal Church)

Reader, God never holds anyone responsible for not doing that which they cannot do. If He did, that would make God unrighteous. If you have not received God’s Salvation, found alone in His Son Jesus Christ, it is not because you cannot, but because you will not! If you confess your sins to the Lord Jesus Christ He is faithful and just to forgive you your sins, and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Christ died for the ungodly!

It hardly seems possible that I am writing for this November issue, but with winter already making its presence felt, local communities are celebrating Bonfire Night and Christmas is fast approaching. The festive season is the busiest time of the year for retailers as they prepare for the run-up to the big event. We are blessed in Moray with a great many unique, independent shops and hopefully they will feature on your shopping list. If we buy locally we can ensure the shops remain an integral part of Moray. Meantime, with nearly six months under my belt as Moray’s MP I have settled into routines at Westminster and established my constituency office in Forres, dealing with a number of issues raised by local people. As always, if you have an issue you would like to discuss with me, please feel free to visit or phone on 01309 679253 and will be pleased to help you.
I am currently progressing my proposal to provide children with equal protection from assault. My proposal will ensure that children in Scotland receive the same legal protection as adults, by removing the defence of ‘Justifiable Assault.’ My proposal sets out to change attitudes in society and send a message that we reject violence in every setting. Earlier this year I held a consultation and was delighted to have the support of almost 75% of the individuals and organisation which responded. I am delighted that the Scottish Government announced its support, a move I believe helps us take one step closer to making Scotland the best place in the world to grow up.

I think almost everyone in Moray has felt the sheer frustration of going to purchase something online only to find when you check out that delivery is going to cost you a fortune because you have an AB or an IV postcode. Unfair and excessive delivery charges are something that I’ve been battling for a long time. Recently, I succeeded in getting Halfords to agree to change their delivery charges policy after publicly highlighting that they’d charged a customer in Speyside £50 for delivery of towels worth £5.99. Similarly, Lloyds Pharmacy has now committed to looking at their policy after I raised a case of a couple in Keith who were to be charged £50 delivery for a mobility scooter despite them advertising free UK delivery. Enough is enough. I’m making it clear to companies that folk in Moray have had enough of being fleeced and that it is time they reviewed these greedy charges.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP
2013
Lichen – fungus on the lawn explained ! I’ve mentioned this before. One of the joys of our wonderful environment up here is the clean air, and one of the organisms which thrives locally (but rarely in Glasgow) is dog lichen. There are hundreds of species here, growing on trees, rocks and on the grass ! It is particularly at home on ground which has become compacted and is low on nutrients. It is one of the most common questions we get from baffled homeowners, and many have found that the garden centre people aren’t Aerator sure how to deal with it. lichen
programme for the lawn strengthens the grass and this tips the balance of conditions back in favour of the grass. As with all things in nature, it’s about competition. There are no chemical products which remove lichen. Golf courses do this all the time, and so do we. Aerating the ground over winter should be part of routine lawncare in any case. The freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw weather we get compacts most ground round here which prevents tender new plant roots spreading, even if the grass has had a spring feed. The ground is too solid.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with half a million customers, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at:
inverness@greenthumb.co.uk
We shift it by aerating the ground with a big hollow-core tining machine which removes thousands of cores from the ground allowing air to circulate. A regular feeding

THE DROUTHY COBBLER
This month of music kicks off on the 3rd with Aberdeen band The Deportees. With an emphasis on natural instrumentation, The Deportees are known for their strong melodies and signature four-part vocal harmonies, combining the best of Celtic folk with 80’s Americana. They will be supported by Northern Irish singer/songwriter Brash Isaac, as well as local band Gordon James & the Power. The 4th carries on the local theme with new and exciting independent artist, LILURA. Hailing from Nairn, LILURA (or Jemma as she is known to her friends) captivates audiences with dark, electronic beats infused with fun, glittery, pop. Anyone who is a fan of Kate Bush, David Bowie and even Radiohead will find something to like here. Two of the Drouthy’s most popular acts that they have hosted - Adam Holmes & Rachel Sermanni - team up to do a two night stint on the 9th and 10th. Adam has just released his 3rd album, Midnight Milk, to a great reception, gaining a 4 star review in The Scotsman, while Rachel has been called one of Britain’s “most promising folk acts” and has just been on tour in America. This is an excellent chance to see two of Scottish music’s most exciting young artists. Not to be missed! Aberdeen based band The Little Kicks have been described as both ‘Indie-pop’ and ‘Disco-rock’. Whatever they are, they are bound to get you moving. Having toured around the world and shared stages with the likes of Twin Atlantic, Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit (to name a few), the bands focus on vocal harmonies and infectious guitar hooks, combined with a knack for writing incredibly catchy songs, The Little Kicks’ sound is incredibly engaging live. You can catch them on the 24th, supported by Inverness band Lional. On the 25th, The Drouthy Cobbler play host to Dante, an alternative folk band from Edinburgh. Dante have spent the last two years working on their first full-length album, Wake, with Frightened Rabbit guitarist, Andy Monaghan. Drawing on indie and folk influences in unusually equal measure, The Herald has described the new material as a collection of “folk-flecked gems”. They will be supported by Jamie Bacon, a singer from the Highlands, as well as Gordon James & the Power. And finally, don’t miss the monthly Comedy Club. Featuring some of the best in both up-and-coming and established talent in the Scottish comedy scene, it is gaining a reputation as one of the best monthly events in the Moray area.

Carers Rights Day
Friday 24 November is Carers Rights Day, an annual event in which carer support agencies across the UK unite to raise awareness of carers’ rights and encourage all carers to make the most of their entitlements, whether WKDW EH EHQHijWV VXSSRUW DW ZRUN RU at home, or the right to a life of their own alongside their caring role.
Caring for someone can leave you feeling your life is no longer your own, and fears of what could happen when you leave the person you care for to go out, whether for business or pleasure, can prevent many carers taking the opportunity for some free time. Moray’s Carer Support Provider Network is keen to ensure Moray’s carers are supported to maintain their caring role and their independence. That’s why the Network is developing the Carer Aware Card, which will be available to carers free of charge. The card is a quick and easy way of giving carers peace of mind that, should something unexpected happen, the right people can be alerted to make sure the person they care for isn’t left unsupported for long. Watch for more information, and make sure you get your card.

Christmas Cake Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a Christmas cake. The process of making it over a number of weeks, the aromas when cooking and then the joy of the deep, rich flavours when we come to eat it. In my house we always eat it with a good cup of tea in the early afternoon when there is just a “wee space to fill” even when there probably isn’t a “wee space to fill”!!
Ingredients: 525g currants 225g sultanas 225g raisins 110g candied peel 165g glacé cherries 300g plain flour pinch of salt ½ tsp mixed spice ½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground nutmeg 300g soft butter 300g soft brown sugar Zest of one lemon 6 large egges, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, extra to feed
Method: 150 °C, 23cm tin – line with 2 layers of baking parchment 1. In a large bowl, mix the fruit, flour, salt and spices 2. In another bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add lemon zest.. beat in the egg, little at a time (if you rush adding the egg the mixture will curdle). 3. Add Half the fruit mix to the creamed butter, fold to incorporate. Add the second half and then the brandy 4. Tip mixture into the cake tin making a slight dip in the centre so as the cake cooks it will level out leaving a flat top to decorate 5. Bake for about 4 ½ hours 6. Leave to cool in the tin for at least an hour, then remove from tin and cool completely. 7. Once cool, prick with skewer and slowly drizzle 3-4 tbsp brandy over. This is feeding! The cake should then be “fed” every 2 weeks until being iced with marzipan and icing before Christmas.
Enjoy!! 118 High Street, FORRES IV36 1NP
;OL 9\UH^H` *OYPZ[THZ *HRL° Once upon a time a little red hen lived in a cabin with a mouse and a rat. One snowy Christmas morning she woke up and decided it would be nice to have a cake. "Let's bake a cake," she said to the mouse. "Yes, a cake!" said the mouse. "A Christmas cake!""It's such a festive day!" she said to the rat. "Don't you think a cake would be a lovely treat today?" "Nothing better than sweets on Christmas!" the rat agreed. So the hen gathered ingredients, and said to the mouse, "Would you like to grind the wheat?""I wouldn't," said the mouse."Neither would I," the rat agreed. So the little red hen ground the wheat."Now who'll crack the eggs?" asked the little red hen."Not I!" said the mouse."Nor I!" said the rat.So the little red hen cracked the eggs."Who'll stir in the sugar and the nuts and the fruit?" asked the little red hen."Not I," said the mouse."And certainly not I," the rat added. So the little red hen poured the ingredients into the bowl, and then she stirred and stirred, and when the batter was done, she asked, "Who'll pour it into the pan?""It won't be me," said the mouse."Nor me," said the rat."I suppose that means I'll pour," said the little red hen. "But tell me this. Who'll eat this cake?""I shall," said the mouse."And so will I!" added the rat."Is that so?" said the little red hen.As that cake baked and the cabin filled with the sweetest scent, the mouse's mouth began to water, and the rat's eyes grew round with desire, and soon that cake was baked."Now I'll pull this cake out of the oven and eat it!" said the little red hen, but as she did, the cake suddenly spun in a circle and rolled to the floor and out the door and down the hill. The hill was so icy that the cake rolled with ease, and the little red hen and the mouse and the rat chased for it, slipping and sliding along. As the cake was rolling by the barn, the barn owls cried, "Where are you running, Christmas cake?""I'm running away," the cake answered."From whooo?" asked the owls."From the little red hen and the mouse and the rat," the cake said, sliding faster still. But the owls liked the look of that cake, so they flew out of the barn and began to chase it too.Faster and faster and faster that cake rolled, and soon it came to a ditch full of diggers who saw it and cried, "A Christmas cake! You look delicious. Where are you off to?""I'm running away from the little red hen and the mouse and the rat and the owls," the cake answered. So those ditchdiggers jumped out of the ditch and began to chase after the cake. That cake kept rolling until it came to a cold, cold stream, where washing women stood in thigh-high boots, scrubbing their clothes."What a delicious looking cake!" said the women. "You'd taste so fine for Christmas supper. Where are you running?""I'm running away from the little red hen and the mouse and the rat and the owls and the ditchdiggers," said the cake, "and soon I'll be running from you!"Sure enough, the cake was right. Those women began to run too.The cake came to a ford in the river where a fox was licking his lips, and when he saw the cake, he feigned concern and asked, "Poor, sweet little cake, where are you running?""I'm running from the little red hen and the mouse and the rat and the owls and the ditchdiggers and the washer women," said the cake."Well, now you're stuck," said the fox, "since you can't cross this ford.""Will you carry me across?" asked the cake."What will you give me if I do?" the fox asked."I'll give you an egg for Christmas," said the cake."OK," said the fox, "climb up then." So he sat, his nose in the air, and the cake rolled up to the top of his bushy tail."Now leap over the ford," said the cake. "Hurry up before the others reach us!""I can't leap with you sitting there," said the fox. "You're not high enough."The cake rolled up higher on the fox's back."Higher still," said the fox. "You won't be safe enough there. You might fall."The cake rolled up to his head. "Is this all right?" asked the cake. "I should be safe way up here.""Not quite," said the fox. "Roll down to my nose."So the cake began to roll.As it did, the fox turned up his nose still higher, and the cake flew into the air. The fox caught it in his mouth and swallowed. He licked his lips and said, "There's nothing like a sweet, delicious Christmas cake!"A moment later the others reached him, and they spotted cake crumbs on his furry muzzle."Where's our cake?" they cried. The fox smiled and licked his lips. "Gone!" said the fox. "Merry Christmas!

DEAN’s ..................................
he Dean’s story began in 1975, in the small town of Huntly, Aberdeenshire. It was there that Helen Dean first created her delicious traditional shortbread for her friends and family who loved its melt in the mouth taste. Helen’s husband Bill thought it was so good he decided to use her baking to help raise funds for the local Huntly pipe band where he was Drum Major. The band’s touring helped to spread her shortbread’s fame far and wide. Soon the aroma of home baking would fill the town as Helen established her own small bakery to meet with demand. The bakery’s reputation began to grow with more and more customers enjoying the delights fresh from the oven. So popular was the light and crumbly shortbread that, in 1992, Dean’s moved to a new purpose built bakery on the outskirts of Huntly. But the story does not end there. With the demand for Dean’s products continuing to grow, further investment was made to extend the bakery with the addition of a gift shop and café bistro. Dean’s café bistro celebrated its 10th birthday this year, and continues to be a favourite stop for coffee or lunch, for locals and tourists alike. The café bistro combines dining areas over two floors, with a viewing gallery into the factory where visitors can watch Dean’s famous shortbread being made and packed. Open seven days with a varied menu to suit all tastes, visitors can enjoy a hearty breakfast, a Sunday carvery, or simply a very good cup of coffee, with shortbread of course on the side. More than forty years on, Dean’s is still a family run business, priding itself on using time honoured handcrafted baking methods, while striving to develop fresh new ideas. The finest ingredients combine with traditional recipes to create a wide variety of premium products which are now exported all over the world.

DON’T hesitate to give your grass a final late cut if it needs it – try not to do it when it is particularly wet, but a low temperature does not matter. DON’T do any significant pruning at this time of year, you do not want to encourage any tender new growth. DON’T forget to make sure your garden is ready for winter storms, check tree stakes, fences and gates and anything likely to blow away!
BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.
TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’. We’re in the thick of autumn now, and despite the occasionally inclement weather I have to say that this is my favourite time of the year for working in the garden. I think childhood memories of bonfires and chilly days linger in my mind, and I still derive great satisfaction from a good afternoon’s work in the garden, followed by a hot bath and hearty winter stew for dinner. My dog, Solly, enjoys the piles of gathered leaves too, and doing his level best to un-do my hard work when he can! A bit of work done in the garden at this time of year can ensure that you have a tidy garden to look out on over the winter months, but it also benefits the garden immensely if it is not sitting under a blanket of fallen leaves. So here are a few DO’s & DON’Ts for this month.
DO clear leaves whenever you can – if you have space in the garden you can create a pile for leaf-mould. DO spike boggy patches in your lawn and rake in sharp sand. DO re-define lawn edges with an edging tool (also called a ‘half moon’). DO plant Tulip bulbs, November is the ideal time for this. DO plant out winter bedding plants to add some colour to your garden. DO feed your birds regularly and reliably, regular visitors come to rely on this over the winter. DO leave a messy corner for wildlife if you can. DO cut down any dead growth on plants that is not going to provide interest over the winter.
It is all too easy to forget about the garden over the winter months and abandon it to the elements, but with a bit of planning it can become one of the magical times of the gardening year. I am in the process of planting up new beds in my garden and I am deliberately choosing plants that look magical with a heavy coating of frost on them. Ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus sinensis can look great in the winter, and reliable summer flowers such as Astilbes can provide wonderful shapes too (if they have faded gracefully!) I am also going to be underplanting a new birch tree with Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ to provide some vivid orange winter stems in future winters. There is more about winter planting ideas on my blog, The Mountain Gardener. TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT I’M UP TO IN MY OWN GARDEN AT THE MOMENT YOU CAN CHECK OUT MY BLOG (‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’) WHICH YOU CAN FIND ON MY WEBSITE AT WWW.ANGELHORT.COM

Words by the Wayside “the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments...” (Luke 16:22,23)
Reader, the rich man ‘was buried’; is that the end of things for him? By no means, it was only the beginning. He was conscious, in the full exercise of his faculties, memory, etc, and in torments! He awakened to eternal truth but too late! He prayed, but too late! Reader, God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that you might live through Him. This life is in His Son. Believest thou this?
