You may notice that the paper stock we are using this month is different from the normal. We are running a trial with new printers and new paper stock in an effort to keep costs down in the current climate of rising paper supply costs - due in part to adverse fluctuations in the exchange rate between the pound and the euro. We are hoping that one consequence of the change will be freeing up more pages for editorial in the future. We are also continuing our survey into what editorial people would prefer to read and you can join this survey by visiting www.spotlighton.co.uk and clicking on the survey button.

Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Life is cyclical. Sometimes the cycles are small other times much larger. We are nearing the end of the Church’s year, and it is a time to look back in sorrow and joy at what has been achieved, and what has been lost. Perhaps the largest cyclical anniversary we will be observing is the Armistice that marked the end of the First World War. You will have noticed how the media, and churches, have been observing the centennial anniversaries of battles, deaths and historical events over the past five years. (It was only this summer that we recalled the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the RAF). Memories can be fleeting or long lasting. Perhaps, over time, memories fade or become distant – no longer relevant. Yet, to those who lived through the experience, they were changed forever. We are formed by our experiences, and memories, good or bad. What events are significant in your life? Who or what have you lost that was irreplaceable? What is the biggest thing you have had to forgive someone? Was it even possible to forgive them? Being able to forgive: The ability to be merciful. Is perhaps the most important gift we can bestow on someone in this life. It allows people to be brought back into the fold – accepted. Without
forgiveness the ones at fault become ‘Outcasts’, and those who cannot forgive are stuck in the perpetual rut of anger and hurt. We can see the damage this can do, historically, with the Treaty of Versailles. Article 231, which became known as the ‘Guilt Clause’. It meant that Germany had to make reparation of 132 billion marks to the Allies (equivalent to £284 billion today) for the damaged caused during the war. The effect of this Draconian clause was to sow the seeds of discontent that would lead to the Second World War. (There is a wonderful novel by Lucy Beckett ‘A Postcard from the Volcano’ that describes this period from the German point of view). The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32) shows how God forgives us. Are we capable of such forgiveness though? The elder son in the parable illustrates our jealousy when people are forgiven. Pope Francis has spoken at length on mercy: I think we too are the people who, on the one hand, want to listen to Jesus, but on the other hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat others with, to condemn others. And Jesus has this message for us: mercy. I think — and I say it with humility — that this is the Lord's most powerful message: mercy. Our society appears to be polarising. Everything is black and white, if you are

not with me you are against me. We in Moray have the privilege of knowing many marriages between people of different nationalities. Some of the marriages have been born from the ashes of the Second World War. Due to these relationships we know that ALL people need to be loved and feel secure. It is fear that leads to hate. The First World War, and the Centennial Anniversaries, have taught us the futility of war. As we remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives in the First World War, let us learn to be as merciful as God has taught us to be. As this centennial cycle comes to a close, and a new cycle begins. May we learn to forgive as God forgives. So that we can move on in Peace and Charity, and those who have fallen, due to their deeds, be shown Mercy. “...yet, though sin is shown to be wide and deep, thank God His Grace is wider and deeper still!” Romans 5: 20

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The dark winter nights have changed the Moray landscape and the fantastic summer is definitely a distant memory, but November gets off to a brighter start as Bonfire Night celebrations are in full swing. Even before the last embers have died, organisers in towns across Moray will be stringing up displays ready for their festive light switch-on. Can I also take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contacted Krystle and I following the announcement that we are expecting our first child next year. With all the joy surrounding this, there are also the questions all future parents in Moray are currently facing about where they will have their child; how they will get to Aberdeen if they have to go there and what kind of journey they will face as they travel a considerable distance in labour. I have been working with the campaigners since the announcement of the downgrading of maternity paediatric services at Doctor Gray’s and while I previously heard their concerns, I now very much share them as well. As usual I can be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk

Christmas is fast approaching and it is time to think about stirring the Christmas pudding but it is also the time to think about how we can help locally. Christmas gives us all the chance to not only to buy local but also to help in our own neighbourhoods, so perhaps that should be our festive resolution. Whilst online shopping couldn’t be more convenient, it comes at a cost. Little of our hard earned money ends up in the local economy and in the Highlands we often have to face expensive and unfair delivery costs. Shopping locally ensures local jobs, more independent shops and some truly unique gifts often showcasing local craftsmanship. So in the run up to Christmas my plea is that we all think about what we can do locally so that all Highlanders can benefit.

The Scottish Government is investing almost £1 billion in free childcare, with families across Moray set to benefit from an ambitious increase in the number of free childcare hours. The investment will see families entitled to 1140 hours of free childcare for three and four year olds and, by almost doubling the availability of free childcare, parents are set to save hundreds of pounds a month, with many finding it easier to return to work. Local authority and partner childcare providers are vital to the delivery of this ambitious policy and ensuring that our children get the best start in life, and so last month I hosted a meeting in Elgin for local childcare providers to meet with the Minister for Children and Young People, Maree Todd MSP. I felt it was important that they had the opportunity to share their views with the Minister and to put any questions directly to her. This is a significant investment in families in Moray and will undoubtedly be of enormous help to local people with young children.

Words by the Wayside “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night‌â€?
JOHN GAMMIE
(Joshua 1:8)
‘YOUR FORRES FENCER’
Christian, we are to know and dwell upon the Word of God continually, and to depend upon the God of the Word without ceasing. Our Saviour’s words and company must be our natural environment. We are not to dwell upon self, or the things of the world. We cannot live and walk independently of Him and His Word. It is the Word of God that renews our minds and transforms it and the God of the Word alone who upholds us.

Carers Rights Day 2018 Caring for your future
emergency planning, signposting and referral to specialist agencies and much more.
Carers Rights Day is an annual event, bringing organisations across the UK together to help carers in their local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. Carers Rights Day aims to: ĂŽ 0DNH FDUHUV DZDUH RI WKHLU ULJKWV ĂŽ /HW FDUHUV NQRZ ZKHUH WR JHW KHOS and support ĂŽ 5DLVH DZDUHQHVV RI WKH QHHGV RI carers
Having the right information at the right time can make all the difference when you’re looking after someone. Every day 6,000 people become carers but often it’s not something we’ve planned for. This year’s Carers Rights Day, on Friday 30 November 2018, will focus on the theme of Caring for Your Future. +HUH LQ 0RUD\ WKHUH DUH DOPRVW carers, each facing their own particular challenges and seeking information and advice to help them manage their role. 4XDUULHUV &DUHU 6XSSRUW 6HUYLFH 0RUD\ offers free access to information, advice, peer support, short breaks, emotional support, training,
Working alongside our colleagues in 0RUD\ÉV &DUHU 6HUYLFH 3URYLGHU 1HWZRUN ZH VXSSRUW 0RUD\ÉV &DUHU $ZDUH &DUG which helps carers think ahead for who might be able to step in at short notice if something unexpected happens to them. We also support carers to use the (QDEOH (PHUJHQF\ 3ODQQLQJ 7RRONLW WR prepare detailed instructions for anyone helping the person they care for in the carer’s absence. 3UHSDULQJ IRU WKH IXWXUH QHHGV VR PXFK PRUH 3RZHU RI $WWRUQH\ LV VRPHWKLQJ many people don’t consider until it’s too late, and writing a will can often be viewed as unnecessary but without it many families find themselves in difficult situations at the worst possible time. Supporting someone to prepare for end of life can be daunting but rewarding, and just taking the time to consider what you want your future to be and how to make that happen can seem like an unreachable luxury. Whatever your viewpoint, the future is coming. Contact us now to start preparing for yours. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Scarification – How Much Will it Cost ? It is the toughest job of the year, but it is the key thing to get done if you are serious about keeping on top of moss. You can do it yourself, if it is a small lawn this is feasible, and could be done with a spring rake. Or for a larger lawn you might consider hiring a machine for the day. I think the going rate is around £50 per day, plus £20 delivery and collection. Many of you will have done this yourself and will appreciate it is not a job for the faint hearted. We will have around 800 lawns to scarify over the next few months. We usually use 2 men plus machines and blowers. While a small lawn can often be done in a couple of hours, a larger lawn can be an all day affair, or even longer. I thought it would be worth putting out some typical prices we would charge:

Aerating (hollow-core tining) is a bit cheaper, largely because there is less to clear up, which is very heavy and time-consuming.
For more information about our annual lawncare plans from just £11.25 per month, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a multi-award winning national franchise, and is the runaway leader in the sector with one million lawns being treated, we are the family-run local franchise covering the wider Moray Firth area. The Reckoning By John Grisham
Pete Banning was Clanton's favourite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbour, and a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Then one cool October morning in 1946. he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

By Belinda Bauer On a stifling summer's day, eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. Jack's in charge, she'd said. I won't be long. But she doesn't come back. She never comes back. And life as the children know it is changed for ever. Three years later, Jack is still in charge - of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they're alone in the house, and - quite suddenly - of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother‌

Hubert Horatio By Lauren Child
The Bobton-Trent seniors certainly know how to make the most of their extravagant wealth - socialising, doing things, buying things and generally being more than a little bit ... irresponsible. Luckily for them, their son Hubert Horatio is an exceptionally intelligent, talented and sensible child. Unluckily for Hubert, this tends to mean that a lot of his spare time is spent steering his rather unruly set of grown-ups out of trouble.

HEALTH WORKS - your well being in good hands The days are getting colder and the light is diminishing. These last months of the year are inviting us to stay indoors, to snuggle up in front of the fireplace with a hot cup of tea. We look for warmth and also for connection in order to feel good; in fact, these components are essential for our health. Who doesn’t know about the nourishment we feel through the touch of another human being. Irene Schenk is a specialist in empathic and compassionate touch. As Shiatsu Practitioner she offers her skills to bring relief from suffering; her treatments address energetic imbalances, provide relief from stress or tension, treat current symptoms and help maintaining your physical health. The beauty of Shiatsu is that it is deeply relaxing with its healing potential and that regular sessions are a very pleasant way to prevent future health issues. Irene has graduated as Shiatsu Practitioner in 1996 and is now back at Healthworks in Forres with her wealth of experience. She is part of a team of fully trained, experienced and insured Practitioners that offer an extensive range of complementary and alternative health care therapies with the aim to restore and bring balance to your mind, body and soul. It is good to know where to go when we need support or guidance for our health. HEALTHWORKS is one of those havens where you can place your well being in good hands.

Words by the Wayside “...reconciled to God by the death of His Son.” (Romans 5:10)
Reader, you need to have your sins washed away and be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ and His atoning death. It is the only way of salvation. There is only one mediator between God and Men; the man Christ Jesus. No greater love can He show for you than by giving His life on Calvary’s Cross for you, that if you would repent of your sins and receive Christ as your only Saviour and then you will have peace with God. Have you been reconciled with God through His Son?
