I was rather hoping that all the political dialogue might have died down once “the referendum” had happened but it seems like politicians will always find something else to talk and argue about. I wonder if we will ever find politicians that actually agree. As George Bernard Shaw once said: “He knows nothing; and he thinks he knows everything. That points clearly to a political career.”

Words by the Wayside "This poor man cried, and The Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles." (Psalms 34:6)

Reader, There is a way that seemeth right unto a man; but the end thereof are the ways of death. Man's key problem is sin and the wages of sin is spiritual death. Reader, if thou shalt confess with thy mouth The Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For whosoever shall call upon the name of The Lord shall be saved. www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish charity SC041290

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Choose Jesus, choose life! It is agreed, by most people, that the recent referendum created an interest in politics that took everyone by surprise. People engaged in a way like never before through meetings, canvassing and social media and at the end of the day it boiled down to where you decided to put your x (vote) what was required was a simple yes or no answer. Many voted who had never done before and now, following the result, we all wait to see if vows made will be carried through and there is still much debate on that whole issue with the usual amount of skepticism that applies to what all politicians say. For many it was one of the most important decisions they had to make and now that the dust has begun to settle one thing that is certain is that things will not be the same again.

Decisions and therefore their consequences are something that we are faced with every day - some rather mundane and straightforward others more important. What one has for breakfast does not carry the same consequences as to who one might marry, yet both call for a decision. However, there is one decision that far outweighs every other one and it is what will YOU do with Jesus Christ and there is a straight choice between following Him or rejecting Him. It is about a YES or NO regarding who He is and why He came and what it means to follow Him. Mark's gospel makes it clear that He is the Son of God (Mark 1:1), that He came to forgive our sins (Mark 2:1 - 12), and that to follow Him means to repent from our sins and believe the good news (Mark 1: 15). The bible also teaches that not only is there life

in all its fullness here and now for those who trust Jesus (John 10:10) but in the life to come 'no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him'. Vows and promises made by both sides may or may not come to pass however we can trust the bible for it is the Word of God. Wherever you put your X on the 18th September was your choice as you listened to both sides and made a decision. Why not take time to read Marks gospel, or attend a local church, or look out for an Alpha or Christianity Explored course and discover just how much God truly loves you. YES or NO follow or ignore - choose Jesus, choose life.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES With the batteries just about recharged following the hard fought referendum campaign there is the ongoing constituency work that should be the bread and butter of any elected representative. Whether that is campaigns supported by constituents or individual cases it is what makes the office of an MP or MSP tick. I have to confess I am also pleased to have a little bit of space to catch up on some time with family and friends and some reading and music, as social and family life tends to be challenging during campaigns!

Well it’s now several weeks since the referendum and while the result was not what I personally campaigned for what we have seen since is a resurgence in Scottish politics with tens of thousands of people joining political parties. This is an unprecedented time and it is of huge importance that the energy we saw in the Referendum Campaign is not lost but is channelled to improving our communities and getting the best possible deal for Scotland. For someone who has been involved in politics for a good number of years now it is amazing to see this.

GOOD FOOD ALERT!! FINDHORN ROAD KINLOSS 01309 690475

The days are getting shorter and temperatures are dropping so what better way to escape the gloom than to go to a cosy pub for Sunday lunch? We did just that and found ourselves at The Abbey Inn in Kinloss. Within walking distance of the camp and surrounding houses, or even a picturesque walk from the nearby village of Findhorn, it is the perfect excuse to hang up your apron and let Robert and his team do the work for you and a relaxed and friendly environment that welcomes families is always a winner in our books! We ordered drinks from the well stocked bar and studied the menu – which did not disappoint. With choices from traditional to something more adventurous we decided on Crispy Filo Pastry Prawns and Cajun Chicken & Black Pudding Salad for starters. Both were a delight, beautifully presented with drizzles of sauce and salad garnishes and our taste buds were suitably aroused as we eagerly awaited our main course. The Kids Menu caters perfectly for younger palates and both our boys had a Jumbo Hot Dog & Chips - their clean plates spoke for themselves. My wife could not resist a traditional Sunday Roast. The options were Gammon or Chicken and she opted for the latter which came with a helping of roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and carrots. The portion was more than generous and juicy and certainly kept her quiet! The Abbey’s burgers came highly recommended, so I bravely ordered The Abbey Tower Burger – not for the faint of heart! Towered to eye level and consisting of two quarter pound beef burgers, two bacon and cheese on a brioche bun, topped with onion rings and a side of fries and coleslaw, I knew I'd have my work cut out. It was delicious and I very nearly conquered it. With full bellies we skipped dessert but the kids managed an ice cream each! What a great place to get together for just about any occasion - lunch with the girls or guys, drinks after work to catch up, watch sports on the big screen or Sunday lunch with the family and with Christmas approaching there is plenty going on too. All in all we has a wonderful Sunday afternoon with great food, professional service, a friendly atmosphere. What more could you ask for?

The High Street Bites Back Reports of our beloved High Streets in demise may prove to be a bit premature. Forres High Street is witnessing a bit of a revival lately. Admittedly there are still some charity shops in evidence but there are also signs of a healthy entrepreneurial spirit that our nations are known for. Home Hardware took over the old Mackenzie & Cruickshank building and is now a firmly established, profitable business. More recently only in the last few weeks we have seen a new Fine Foods shop (Philp's), a new Beauty Shop on Tollbooth Street (DK's) and, into the Younies old shop, goes Home Comforts by Sandra. We caught up with owner, Sandra, recently to try and find out why she had taken the move onto the high street. Sandra is born and bred in Moray (Elgin actually) and originally started trading in one of the smaller shops on Tollbooth Street in Forres, mainly making up curtains from customers' own fabric. As her reputation spread and business grew Sandra then moved to an adjacent slightly larger building and then about 11 years ago settled into Orchard Road (again to accommodate her growing business), when she was joined by Stella who has been with Sandra ever since. Then, last summer, Home Comforts helped with a pop-up shop in Forres High Street for 6 weeks which was a huge success, sufficient to prompt them to start to contemplate a permanent residence on the High Street. But the fear of a combination of high rates and rent meant this did not become a reality until the recent floods when the search suddenly became a necessity and they fortunately were able to strike a good deal at Number 126, High Street. In the first few weeks business has been very good with customers enjoying her huge range of “Ready-Made” curtains, Roman Blinds, Bespoke Cushions and Soft Furnishings. Sandra is now looking forward to a busy Christmas period with people buying those “perfect wee gifts” that “you just can't find elsewhere”. Please help to support our local businesses by shopping at Home Comforts by Sandra to be found at 126 High Street, Forres. Tel 01309 671617. Happy shopping!!

review

New menu’s a real winner! My husband and I don't dine out too frequently so when the opportunity presented itself to try out the New Menus at the Old Mill in Brodie we were “licking our lips” in anticipation. In short – the meals exceeded all our expectations – The new menus are simply fantastic! The Old Mill Inn is easy to find along the A96, just along from Brodie Countryfare, and has ample parking. We arrived at 7pm on a Sunday evening finding the pub quite busy but not completely full. The waiter told us that it was a good policy to always book in advance. We were welcomed and directed to our reserved table that was clean and comfortable. Drinks were served while we pondered over the new restaurant menu. There was also a selection of specials to choose from. I started with roast tomato soup which was a delicious choice and an interesting variation on the standard tomato soup – packed with bags of flavour. It arrived promptly and was served with freshly baked soda bread. My husband had the Cullen Skink which was pure heaven – the best we'd had in ages. Many of the main courses sounded like wonderful combinations making it difficult to choose! We settled for the loin of venison and the pan fried seabream. Beautifully presented, and served with extra side vegetables the meals were a real treat. The shredded red cabbage and black kale were cooked perfectly, and complimented the tender venison and Pomme Anna well. The ‘gin and tonic’ chocolate sauce was a lovely addition. The fish was beautifully tender and tasty and the gnocchi (a personal favourite) were just right. To finish, we dived into a warm sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and fresh raspberries served on meringue with cointreau syrup, topped with cream. The desserts were a delightful indulgence to complete our meal. A big thank you to Kevin, the owner, and all the staff who were both attentive and polite throughout our meal making us feel most at home. The new menus are a real winner!
