Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings September always used to be associated with harvests and many churches had special ‘harvest thanksgiving’ services, which would celebrate God’s abundant provision for us in this country. Of course, people are not so agriculturally aware these days, food is thought of as coming primarily from the supermarket rather than the soil. A hundred years ago, the Agricultural Committee in Moray was recommending that Scouts and school children should gather the eggs of seagulls to stop them multiplying and to add some healthy food to the table! Times have certainly changed; taking bird eggs from a nest now is considered a heinous act of behaviour. This generation just doesn’t have an association to the land that past generations have experienced. Nevertheless, an old saying that has stood the test of time is ‘a person reaps what they sow.’ Any farmer, crofter or keen gardener, will identify with this saying because it is vital to what they do. As a positive example, the Forres in Bloom team don’t just

scatter random seeds and bulbs in the hope they’ll come up looking lovely, everything is planned and governed to reach the end result: a beautiful town in which to live. A negative example would be the invasive and quick-growing Giant Hogweed that is being cut back along the Findhorn River. Of course, the metaphor reaches far wider than its agricultural origins; it applies to every action or lack of action. If a sportsperson only puts in a little practice, if that’s all they are willing to sow, well, then they will only reap a minor improvement in their game. If education in Moray keeps getting cut then what kind of ‘crop of children’ will we reap in future years? If society sows immorality as something that is ‘normal and progressive’ then what kind of environment will our children reap in the coming years? Like a good many sayings that we use today, many of them originate from Scripture, and the ‘reap what you sow’ proverb is no different. We all know the general truth of this saying, that what we often ‘put in’ to

something determines what we ‘get out’ of it. It is certainly true that how we live our lives here will determine where we spend eternity, for as Paul writes in his letter to the Galatians: ‘do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.’ Gal. 6:7 It is worth therefore, taking the time to consider the words of the Old Testament prophet Hosea, who said: ‘sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.’ Hosea 10:12 What a healthy and beneficial harvest that would be for the people of Moray – a harvest of righteousness. That is a harvest worth labouring for!

Parliament Blog & Tide Times The major issue I have been contacted about in recent weeks has been the downgrading of the maternity unit at Dr Gray’s. We have seen a fantastic campaign launched by the KeepMUM group with a peaceful protest in Elgin where hundreds marched in support of retaining our services locally. At the public meeting where NHS Grampian promised to answer questions from the public, many were left frustrated as the panel simply skirted round the key issues. The fact is the MUM campaign was launched thirty years ago to secure this vital maternity unit in Moray and it’s shocking that in 2018 it should have to be reformed to maintain the service. The examples that have been shared with me about problems encountered by mums going to Aberdeen to give birth are not scare stories to cause concern, they are reality and proves why so many fear the proposals which took effect from July. I have also been keen to ensure this remains a non-party political campaign. We will win if we work together in a united front, rather than try to score cheap party political points. I know this was the success of the campaign thirty years ago, and I hope the same approach can bring about the same results now.

As Parliamentarians head back to Parliament after the summer recess I’d like to reflect on the summer. Many of us will have enjoyed time off with our friends and families in the past weeks. But this isn’t possible for everyone. Tourism is the biggest industry in the Highlands and its workers can generally forget getting time off in summer. Likewise, our valuable public services; NHS, Council, Emergency Services and others were working hard for us whilst many of us were relaxing. I’m also reminded that while many of us were able to enjoy time away from the routine, there are those for whom summer provides no respite from the grind of struggling to make ends. And I look forward to returning to Parliament to help them.

The biggest issue I’ve been working on recently has been the changes to maternity services at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. To run a consultant-led service in Elgin NHS Grampian need eight junior doctors on the rota but in July they’d only managed to fill two of those posts due to ongoing difficulties attracting doctors to Moray. NHS Grampian plan for the changes to be in place for a year to eighteen months while they redesign the service, however, the news has caused real concern and anxiety to families across Moray, and I’ve been working with campaigners to press NHS Grampian to reinstate the service as soon as possible, and not in a year or 18 months as is planned. I’ve called on the Scottish Government to intervene to ensure the long term future of the consultant-led unit, and have asked that every option be explored in the short term, including whether doctors can be seconded to Moray to plug the gaps.

SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

A Dry Summer this Year - at Last - and Now the Grass is Compacted ! The Beechgrove Garden and all the other gardening advice this last month will be about aerating the lawn now. At GreenThumb, this is what we’re doing too. Compacted ground prevents the take up of moisture, prevents air circulation and congests the root zone in the turf. All of these factors weaken the grass, it loses colour, growth slows right down and the lawn becomes prone to the invasion of MOSS and lichen over the Winter.

Aerator

For small lawns traditionally this has meant forking the ground, but for a larger lawn this is not really feasible. What we do, and the golf courses do this too, is run over the grass with a hollow-core tining machine (you can see from the picture this is a heavy piece of kit). It pulls thousands of cores out the ground in no time, and instantly eases the compaction. It’s probably the best thing we can do for our customers, as no-one has an aerator in their shed! However you tackle this, it is a key part of the battle in our climate to control MOSS. Oh - and remember to keep leaves off the grass through the autumn.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area.
