PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Our world and our heads are full of the knowledge of God This summer we’ve been clearing some junk to the dump – oops sorry – recycling centre. In the process we have re-discovered some things we’d forgotten existed. It’s a difficult job to start, an easy task to put off and never the thing to do on one of those baking hot days we have had this summer. But for all our reluctance to begin, it is a great exercise to complete. Not just because it frees up space for some more junk, but because it gives us the opportunity to look at what we’ve got. Sometimes you might find things that can be repaired, other times you identify things other people may be able to use – things that were simply lying around taking up space but now could be really useful to somebody else. Now that really is re-cycling. We need regular clear outs – and not just in our homes, garages and sheds. It’s also a useful exercise to have a head clear out; a mind declutter. To take time to review what we’ve got stored up in our memories. Like houses which accumulate lots of

‘stuff’, our minds acquire huge amounts of information over the years – some of which we use regularly, some that we use subconsciously and some that just seems to lie there. A daily paper carried the story of a lady who had reached the grand old age of 100 years – 99 of them living in the same house. Now she must have had a real treasure trove of memories just waiting to be accessed and enjoyed again. Like her, we have in our minds enormous information resources acquired over many years. David, the Biblical poet and psalm-writer, said that is because we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ Psalm 139:14 and so he encourages us to give praise to our creator. That’s because David believed God made him for a purpose. Like David the first century Christian leader Paul of Tarsus believed God equips us all with minds to appreciate and venerate him. As he said... since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what

has been made, so that men are without excuse. Romans 1:20. Or as David put it, ‘the heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. Psalm 19:1-2. As both writers indicate – our world and our heads are full of the knowledge of God – knowledge he has put there. But what are we doing with that information? Is it simply lying there? If so, challenging as it may seem, start a mind clear out and put to good use what God has given you. When you do it will open up all kinds of spaces in your life – for him and for others. And hopefully you will be drawn to truly value what you already possess – the knowledge of your creator.

While I normally try to be less political in this blog, in this, the month of the Independence Referendum, I can’t really talk about anything else. The referendum has been at the centre of the lives of many thousands of campaigners across Scotland and as the 18th approaches the importance of it is sinking in with more and more people as they reach the point where they must choose Yes or No. Yes we want to do something different for our country, Yes we have the confidence, talent and drive to make Scotland work better for it’s people, a people that trust their ability to build a better country. Or No, we think Westminster should continue to take the lead. For me, for my children and their children in years to come it is absolutely a Yes. Yes to a better Scotland for everyone.

September is now here with arguably the most important vote that people in Scotland will participate in during in their lifetime. Should Scotland be an Independent Country? Yes or No. There have been public meetings, televised debates, discussions around the dinner table, at work and and in the pub but ultimately I believe it comes down to this: On the 18 September from 7am till 10pm the people of Scotland hold all of the power in their hands. Do we choose to use that power or hand that power back? You decide - use your vote!

My Wedding at Innes House Sheryl Milligan & Sean Dyer – 9th August 2014

Sheryl Milligan gives us an insight into her recent wedding at Innes House: Where did you meet? Sean and I met in the Abbey Arms in Kinloss, exactly 2 years to the day before we got married; a complete coincidence as we hadn’t realised it when we booked the wedding. Why Innes House? We chose Innes House because of its uniqueness. As they say in their brochure, there is an actual garden in their marquee! We wanted to get married outside because it was a breathtakingly beautiful setting for a wedding. The night before? Sean spent the night at my parent’s house with his wedding party and Uncles having a few drinks. We girls all stopped at Innes House for drinks and nibbles, as we were getting ready from there the following morning. Your ceremony? We wanted a religious Christian service, and our minister brought just the right amount of humour to it, settling both our nerves.

My Wife and I… I was quite nervous about Sean's speech but it was perfect. His words about me were beautiful and touched my heart; there wasn't a dry eye in the room. He paid my parents the credit they were due and got way more laughs than he expected. …and your food? We choose our menu based on our favourite foods, and we had to be rolled out of the tasting at the 1629 restaurant! On the day it was presented beautifully and enjoyed by all. Any star performers? The staff at Innes couldn’t do enough for us, but our photographer, John Baikie was absolutely fantastic; he risked life and limb up on the roof of the Innes tower to get the perfect sunset shot that he promised. Party Time… Our day was made complete by our perfect party. We had just the right music mix from our band and disco. The photo-booth was a big hit with the guests and it was all topped off with an amazing firework display. It hasn't quite sunk in yet that we are now Mr and Mrs Dyer. We are still sky high after the wedding of our dreams!

End of Season Clear Out ! We’ve actually had an acceptable spring and summer around the Moray Firth. In fact, many folk had obviously forgotten about the sprinkler in the shed, and in the hot weather in July the grass dried out and browned off, just like any other plant if it isn’t watered. It’s usually a short-lived feature of our climate here though and most lawns will recover now. A lasting benefit of some dry weather though is we hope there will have been less moss growth this year.

If you don’t usually scarify your lawns, this autumn is a good time to do it as the moss is weaker than it has been for some years. Scarifying can be done by raking out the moss and thatch with a spring rake, or often these days with a scarifying machine. Either way, it is not for the faint hearted. Most people we scarify for are astonished at how much stuff comes out of their grass. We use machines, blowers and sweepers, but it’s still a 2 man job and can take hours (or days) ! Why does a lawn need scarified I hear you ask ? I think it’s rather like cleaning windows, you need to do it fairly regularly otherwise eventually you’ll have a rather filthy piece of glass, pretty useless as a window. It’s the same with the grass. Over time, it will fill up with old debris and form a layer of thatch, which in turn will increasingly provide the perfect habitat for moss to grow. Pretty soon, it’s more moss than grass it seems – a

lost cause. Actually no, even badly mossed lawns can be restored quite quickly, in time for next year in fact. Grass is very resilient (given a helping hand) and will survive much abuse. Why not make the most of our half-decent summer and have a go this autumn, or get us to give you a hand, our advice is completely free by the way.
