The Editor
As we go to press, the news reports are full of stories of displaced people across the globe who appear to be desperate to improve their situation. It appears to be a genuine humanitarian issue with some troubling ramifications if we are unable to respond in a coordinated fashion. Let us hope that ‘the powers that be’ can organise sufficient aid to avoid any loss of life and offer some comfort to those people who have lost or been forced to abandon their homes.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The Pursuit of Happiness The biggest selling song of 2014 was “Happy” by Pharell Williams. The official video of the song on You Tube has around 640 million hits. The lyrics of the chorus include: “Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. Because I’m happy, Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth. Because I’m happy Clap along if you know what happiness is to you. Because I’m happy Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do.” But what is happiness? The dictionary defines happiness as a mental or emotional state of well being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. Did you know that the United Nations declared 20th March the International Day of Happiness to recognise the importance of happiness and well being as universal goals? The BBC conducted a poll a few years ago and came to the conclusion that Britain’s happiness is in decline. The findings found that Britain is less happy than in the 50s, despite the fact that we are three times richer. The proportion of people saying they are “very happy” has fallen from 52% in 1957 to just 36% today. This British experience
mirrors data from the States, where Social Scientists have seen levels of life satisfaction gradually decline over the last quarter of a century. In the early 70s, 34% of those interviewed in the General Social survey described themselves as “very happy”. By the late 90s, the figure was 30%. Are you happy today? Do you have an inner peace, contentment and joy in your life? Or are you still searching for something? I remember once seeing a portrait photograph of a clown. The clown looked sad but a fake smile was drawn on his face. Someone once said: “All it takes is a beautiful fake smile to hide an injured soul and they will never notice how broken you really are.” Masks have been used in the world of Theatre and TV for many years. In fact the ancient Greeks used masks in their theatrical performances on a regular basis. Zoro, the Lone Ranger, Batman and Robin have all used masks to conceal their true identity. In life people put on masks to conceals their true emotions and feelings. All of us in the journey of life are on “A pursuit of happiness.” Where can we find true happiness, authentic peace and contentment and real joy?The bible says that contentment, joy,

happiness and peace can be found through faith in Jesus. Jesus himself said in John 10:10: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” As a third-century man was anticipating death, he penned these last words to a friend: "It's a bad world, an incredibly bad world. But I have discovered in the midst of it a quiet and holy people who have learned a great secret. They have found a joy which is a thousand times better than any pleasure of our sinful life. They are despised and persecuted, but they care not. They are masters of their souls. They have overcome the world. These people are the Christians - and I am one of them." Do you know this happiness? Do you have an inner peace, a contentment and inexpressible joy in life. Or are you still searching? Jesus said: “I have come that you may have life in all its fullness.”

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES I’m now back to Parliament after a very busy summer recess in Moray. During the summer break, as well as holding a summer surgery tour and attending community meetings, I enjoyed having the opportunity to spend time with my family and our growing puppy, Cinder. Although the weather was far from fair, it was great to get out for walks at the beach and in our lovely countryside. Another highlight of the summer recess for me was the hugely successful Elgin Food and Drink Festival, which attracted a huge number of visitors from far and wide. The Food and Drink festival is a great family day out and a fantastic opportunity for local food producers, of which Moray has many, to reach out to new customers. I know how hard the team at Elgin BID work to make the Food and Drink festival a success every year and they certainly deserve praise for putting on another fab event this year.
2015 has been an incredible year, but it has also been a year of contemplation and commemoration. I will note just a couple of those important events here. Early July marked the 20th anniversary of the appalling genocide at Srebenica, where 8372 unarmed boys and men were led out of what was supposed to be the UN protected area of Srebrenica and murdered. The 6th August saw the 70th Anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing which killed tens of thousands of people, the consequences of which are still felt. These appalling events in our history should never be forgotten and are a constant reminder of the potential consequences of the decisions that parliaments and governments take. It is a sombre subject matter for this column but it is vital we remember these horrific events and use them to guide our current and future actions in the issues we deal with where many lives can be at stake.

autumn. They are quite different recipes though. A spring feed should feature nitrogen to get it growing and put some colour into the leaf, the autumn feed should contain iron (ferrous sulphate) to control moss growth, and winter nutrients to help the roots through the winter. We use a soluble powder mix to make up a 5 gallon backpack sprayer, which makes for an even application. Many of you will have put down an autumn feed and seen the moss turn brown/black, pretty much overnight. This is caused by the iron in the mix, which dehydrates the top growth of moss, killing it off. It’s only part of the control required however. Once the current growth has been killed off, it should be scarified out with a rake, or a scarifying machine, so the grass goes through the winter with a reduced amount of material on the surface, which is actually a favourable habitat for more moss to grow! Scarifying is a topic on it’s own which

www.dinaleigh0.wix.com/ dinaleigh50
SANDRA RILEY
‘SENCE OF PLACE’ 26th Sept - 6th Oct 6pm - 8pm www.sandrariley.co.uk
In this exhibition ‘Patterns of Change’ it becomes evident that Dina Leigh is in search of something deeply elemental, different and very much her own. Her paintings are exquisite but seemingly chaotic, vibrant and full of roaring humanity. An exploration in the flux of change, crossroads experience, growth and death are underpinned with Goethe’s phenomenology and poetry by Emily Dickinson, T. S. Eliot and Paul Celan. Findhorn based Dina Leigh graduated BA (Hons) and MA Fine Art at the Norwich University of the Arts. This retrospective exhibition will be displaying a selection of her work produced over a decade from 2003-2013. Large-scale mixed media pieces printed on to canvas and often painted into using acrylic paints. Sandra uses her own photographs as a starting point and basis for her work. Light, colour and atmosphere are themes that fascinate her the most. Different places and situations have their own unique energy and atmosphere in time and place.

Elgin & Lossiemouth residents urged to seek energy help and advice from Home Energy Scotland Home Energy Scotland, a free and impartial advice service from the Scottish Government is reminding residents in Elgin and Lossiemouth to utilise the service to help cut their energy bills and make their homes warmer. A one-stop shop for advice and support, the Home Energy Scotland Hotline (0808 808 2282) is there to help Scots stay warmer for less. Around a third of Scottish households have already benefited from the only source of clear and impartial advice on how to make your home cheaper to heat. Home Energy Scotland also offers a community liaison service for those who find it difficult to communicate over the phone. Community liaison officer (CLO), Diane Bannerman, explains how the service works. “I may visit a vulnerable client at their home to offer in-depth and bespoke advice to help with their individual situation. The aim is to create homes that are warm and cheaper to heat. I can recommend measures to help a householder do so, based on their property and personal circumstances, as well as facilitate access to grants and funding from the Government to help improve energy efficiency in their home. “When meeting a client for the first time, I need to find out about how much energy they use and how efficient the property is. To do this, I carry out a free home energy report with an energy efficiency rating, as well as provide suggestions on how to better it. Their energy rating can be improved in different
ways such as low cost DIY tips and behavioural changes. This can be learning how to take meter readings, understanding energy bills and comparing utility suppliers and tariffs. “Of course there are more costly measures but often there is financial assistance available to install them and I can help people access that funding. “All this can be done one-to-one, face-to-face with a home visit or in groups at events and workshops. Group sessions can be really interesting and lively as people share their experiences with one another. “I also work on a variety of different projects and deliver fuel poverty workshops and information services to local communities and multi-ethnic groups, all of which helps us work towards reducing fuel poverty.” The Home Energy Scotland CLO service is just one of the many services available. Home Energy Scotland provides services to suit everyone. As well as receiving money-saving energy advice, households can receive information about energy efficiency grants and schemes available from the UK and Scottish Government. To find out exactly what Home Energy Scotland can do for you - whatever your circumstances call 0808 808 2282 or go to www.homeenergyscotland.org.uk . Act now to make your home warmer and help Scotland go greener together.

Queen Victoria School
Raising to Distinction Open Morning Sat 19 Sept 2015 Admissions Deadline Fri 15 Jan 2016 Queen Victoria School in Dunblane is a co-educational boarding school for the children of UK Armed Forces personnel who are Scottish, or who have served in Scotland or who have been members of a Scottish regiment. The QVS experience encourages and develops well-rounded, confident individuals in an environment of stability and continuity. The main entry point is into Primary 7 and all places are fully funded for tuition and boarding by the Ministry of Defence. Families are welcome to find out more by contacting Admissions on +44 (0) 131 310 2927 to arrange a visit.
Queen Victoria School Dunblane Perthshire FK15 0JY
www.qvs.org.uk
Queen Victoria School, Dunblane Wendy Bellars, Head Open Morning is Saturday, 19th September 2015 Queen Victoria School (QVS) is a co-educational boarding school fully funded – parents don’t pay fees – by the Ministry of Defence to provide stability and continuity of education for the children of UK Armed Forces personnel who are Scottish, or who have served in Scotland or who have been members of a Scottish regiment. There are 277 pupils in the School, ranging from Primary 7 through to S6. Age-ranges within each year-group are wide, however, because of the very varied and inevitably disrupted educational backgrounds from which the pupils come. One pupil came into S3 having been to 13 different schools; others into P7 having been to eleven different schools – and these are not just different schools, but different education systems as well.
Academic results are consistently well above the national averages, however, and there is a wide programme of extra-curricular activities, Games and the Combined Cadet Force. Major sports are rugby – where QVS is generally considered to “punch well above its weight” as a small school – and hockey, although there is a growing commitment to football as well. QVS pupils and their families greatly value the strength of mutual support in a school community where all recognise the reality of Service life. Set in 45 acres of beautiful Perthshire countryside, Queen Victoria School is easily accessible by road, rail or air.
If QVS pupils were not at the School, they would be attending whichever was the local school in the area in which their parents were posted. QVS has a particular brief from the Ministry of Defence to care for those eligible families who could not otherwise afford boarding education. Ceremonial – piping, drumming, Highland Dancing and drill – constitutes an important part of the life of the School and is a visible link between the pupils and the work that their parents have chosen to do, in the UK Armed Forces. The Pipes, Drums and Dancers of QVS are internationally renowned, having played at tattoos both at home and abroad, most recently in the Basel Christmas Tattoo 2013 and The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2012.
There is no substitute for visiting a school, meeting its pupils and staff and picking up the atmosphere. If you would like to know more before travelling to Dunblane to visit us, however, and to request a DVD, please contact our Admissions Secretary on 0131 310 2927. Alternatively, you can write to: Admissions Secretary, Queen Victoria School, Dunblane, Perthshire FK15 0JY, United Kingdom, or visit our website www.qvs.org.uk
