Pastoral letter and Church Meetings Many of you reading this probably don’t believe in God. You may think there is ‘something out there’ - but in all probability you wouldn’t be prepared to commit yourself to a belief in the personal God of the Bible - the one described as the God who made the world and everything in it. He created all the nations throughout the whole earth, decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and determined their boundaries. His purpose was for the nations to seek after him and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him though he is not far from any one of us. The God who is a person - with personality - and who takes a real living interest in every one of us.
Every day our adopted cat seems to demonstrate he’s not just a blob of fur but a creature with real personality. He ‘speaks’ with his miaow, with his eyes and with his insistence that he be scratched under the chin. Even the birds he stalks in the garden reveal individual characteristics. Watching the cat being scolded by a protective mother blackbird and he running for the cover of the window sill from her rebuke reminds me that even the smallest of creatures appear to be endowed with individuality and personality.
For many people that’s too specific, perhaps too frightening or possibly too simple. But the more I look at the world around me, the more I see personality in almost everything.
Maybe you don’t have a cat to watch or a garden with scolding birds - but there is a God who is not far from you; his purpose and desire is that you would reach out to him, seek for him and find him. He even sent his Son, Jesus, into this world to help you in that search - a real living personality who will introduce you to the real and living God. Colin Morrison Elgin & Forres Free Church

Of course I don’t want to give every worm or grub a name but the more I look at the world the more I can see the mark of a person at work in creating it. That is exactly how Paul described God and his world to a highly educated Athenian audience in the passage from the book of Acts loosely quoted above - a real personal God who made us, a real personal God who continues to relate to us on a personal level every day.

ExTRACTS FROM THE RATIFIED MINuTES OF THE MEETING OF 19TH MAY 2011 OF FORRES COMMuNITY COuNCIL
Public Session • Police Inspector McCruden told the meeting that the first phase of Operation Moravia was complete with 13 drug search warrants being served on addresses in Moray at which several thousands of £’s of drugs had been seized and 22 people had been charged with offences including drugs, anti social behaviour and housebreaking. Grampian Police are seeking residents help on two cases of vandalism, to equipment & property at the Moray Steiner School & a vehicle parked in Moray Street. They would welcome any information that may assist them either through Grampian Police Service Centre on 0845 600 5 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The Inspector encouraged both public and businesses to review their security, with the warmer weather and open windows, aiding opportunistic theft from premises. He also told the meeting that Grampian Police were seeking to recruit Special Constables & anyone interested should ring 0845 600 5700 and ask for Sgt Ian Chalmers. Inspector McCruden was asked about the effectiveness of the CCTV system, in light of the recent two window breakages & vandalism to the bus shelters & timetable machine in the High Street, and their failure to detect anyone. It had been noted the cameras remained parked rather than sweep the range of movement they were designed to cover and it questioned the sufficient manning, by operators, to be effective. Cllr Kennedy asked if the cameras received an annual service, because as a Security Consultant he felt that they needed one to remain effective. • A member of the public asked the Community Council if anything could be done to clean up the area of the Sanquhar Loch. He said that the Loch was silting up to the point that a sand bar was visible in it, the RSPB had been called out to a swan entangled in fishing tackle, dog walkers were not cleaning up after their pets and
fires had been lit in the woods. Sandra MacLennon from Forres in Bloom said that she was under the impression that the land was owned by a New Zealand Trust and that previous attempts to tidy the area had been hamstrung by SEPA rules and regulations. Suggestions were made that the Community Woodlands Trust & Forres Footpaths Trust be approached, together with the Parks & Gardens Officer. The Secretary also pointed out that if manpower were a sticking point then RAF at Kinloss has indicated that they would be happy to assist in Community Projects. • Cllr Hayward raised her concerns at the on-line planning area of the Moray Council web site and informed the meeting that the emails she had received from Mr A Burnie did not make sense and did not answer the questions she had raised. Cllr Hellyer said that these concerns had been passed to Moray Cllr Ogilvie because the tab numbers of comments did not correspond with the documents shown. Cllr Kennedy said that this did not engender confidence in the word of Moray Council Officers. Secretary’s Report • Letters were received from the Libraries & Museums Officer, Educational Services Leisure Officer, the Friends of the Falconer Museum & a report from the Forres Golf Course Management Committee. • The Libraries & Museums Officer wrote with reference to an article in the P & J about a teenager being barred from the library to point out that nobody had been banned by the library staff. The Secretary said that he and the Vice Chair had as a result of this letter spoken with the library staff before arranging a meeting with the Manager of the Sports & Leisure Department and the Senior Centre Co-ordinator. Following that meeting, and the exchange of ideas, the management agreed to look at involving the co-operation of the user groups by consultation with them. • Sandra MacLennon told the Community
Council that following further feedback from Moray Council there is now no plan to use the Wee Fibees garden area. • The Secretary announced that the Community Council had received its biannual grant cheque from Moray Council which he had paid into the Treasurers Account. The sum was for £625.22. Chair’s Report • The Chair said that he had received advertising on multi-use synthetic sports pitch, which led him to think of the consultation held some years ago by Moray Council on fitting a synthetic pitch in Forres. Cllr Creswell said she would make enquiries. External Groups Report • Cllr Mackenzie said that a draft lease was in the Legal Dept. for Nelsons Tower and the Trust had applied for LEADER funding with paperwork in on the 7th of June. • Cllr Hayward said that no response had been forthcoming as to the delays on the Castle Inn planning application. • Moray Cllr Creswell said that she was seeking a review of the Youth Matters seminar, held some years ago to establish what had changed, if anything. Treasurer’s Report • The Treasurer informed the meeting that our account stood at £1025.86, of which 8p was interest, together with the £625.22 paid in by the Secretary giving a total of £1651.08. The Secretary then raised the annual membership payments which had been deferred until receipt of the grant, £25 for Friends of the Falconer, £15 for ASCC, £50 for FGA & £70 for FIB. Members voted unanimously on all, but increased the FIB payment to £100 to recognise the 21st Birthday of FIB. A.O.C.B. • Cllr Hellyer & Cllr Kennedy voiced objection to the Moray Chamber of Commerce speaking on behalf of the Forres Business Association. Date of Next Meeting • Thursday 18th August 2011 at 7.30pm

One of the challenges of politics is trying to force yourself to take some time out and do something different. Being a bit of a foody, I have made some time for the garden and a bit of an effort at ‘grow
your own’ in terms of vegetables. I cannot profess to being any kind of expert gardener but it provides some relaxation and, hopefully, some tasty summer salads when I see how the small back garden crop has fared! Angus Robertson MP
I was very p l e a s e d recently to take part in the Moray Great Bike Ride, which saw cyclists of all abilities from across the region get on their bikes for charity. I surprised myself by feeling up for the whole course and even in a not too bad time!

A big thank you to the organisers but also
especially to the participants. This year’s event raised funds for the North East Sensory Service, which provides support for people across Moray and the North East with visual or hearing impairment. A very worthwhile cause and and very worthwhile day out cycling through Moray’s fantastic scenery

“And at midnight there was a cry made, ...go ye out to meet Him.â€? Çť ŠĴ‘Ž ȹĹ˜Ĺ›ÇąĹœÇź Čą What think we of Christ, whose Son is He? God would have none of us to perish in our sins that’s why He sent His Beloved Son, showing His love for us that through Him(The Lord Jesus) and His Sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary that we might live; ‘...Jesus paid it all, all to Him we owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow! ‘
One day we will all have to meet The Lord Jesus Christ. We will meet Him either as our Saviour or as our Judge! Those who are not with Him here on earth He will be against them in eternity and they will be judged accordingly. Will He say unto us “I know you not? or “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord?
What have we done (and what are we doing) with Jesus who is called Christ? Have we trusted Him with our soul’s salvation having realized and understood that He died for us, for our sins? or will we not have this man Jesus Christ to rule over us? Will we continue to live stubbornly and deliberately for self for sin and for satan? When we meet Him, will we be ready?
Do we know Him? Don’t ask ourselves do we know about Him, but do we KNOW HIM! Are we a lover of pleasures or a lover of God? Are we dead in trespasses and in sins or washed in the Blood of God’s Lamb the Lord Jesus Christ? Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgement is come , and worship Him that made heaven and earth: be ye ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh. He loves us, He died for us, that He might bring us to God; let us enter into and believe the truth that God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son, that if we believe in Him we should not perish in our sins but have everlasting life, for our sins have separated us from God.
We need to be born again! Do we know Him? Do we trust Him and Him alone for eternity. He knows them that are His and let everyone that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!
“Therefore b “Therefore be ye ey e also rready: eady: ffor or in such an hour as y h e think not the S on of man ccometh. ometh. h ye Son

Chef’s Confidential Knockomie is fast attracting the walkers, the morning and afternoon coffee and tea customers. This cake is a very popular offering amongst those who want to relax, chat and catch up in a comfortable lounge, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We look forward to welcoming you soon, for a latte, cappucino, espresso, selection of teas and hot chocolate.
120g black treacle 110g golden syrup 110g dark muscovado sugar 230g self raising flour 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1tsp Bicarbonate of soda 120g butter diced 1 medium size firm pear 1 ball of crystallized stem ginger 280ml milk 1 large egg 1kg loaf tin lined
recipe
Pear Gingerbread Cake
1. Put the treacle and syrup into a small pan & heat on a gentle heat until thoroughly mixed, leave to cool. 2. Put the Muscovado sugar and milk in a small pan and heat on a gentle heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Once dissolved remove from heat and leave to cool until lukewarm. 3. Place the flour, spices, bicarbonate of soda and butter in to a bowl and with your fingers, or in a food processor, blend to fine breadcrumbs. 4. Peel and core the pear and dice, put to one side. Finely dice the stem ginger and leave aside. 5. Add the milk and sugar mix to the dry ingredients using a whisk to blend thoroughly. Repeat with the treacle and syrup mix, and beat the egg before adding this. Add the stem ginger. 6. Pour into the lined loaf tin and sprinkle the diced pear on the top. It will sink into the sponge whilst it's cooking. 7. Place in the centre of the oven at 180°C (350°F) Gas 4 for 45 minutes to 1 hour. It will be well risen and use a skewer to test the centre to check if it is cooked. It will be ready when the skewer comes out clean. Allow it to cool completely in the tin, before turning out. Enjoy either warm as a pudding with ice-cream or cream, or at room temperature with a cup of coffee or tea. Great for picnics too! Penny Ellis, Owner Knockomie Hotel, Forres tel: 01309 673146

...a city break Popular for some years now, particularly for those whose time is very limited, a City Break is an excellent way of getting away for a few days and nights, and seeing some interesting and different culture. Perhaps the most common City from this part of the world has been Amsterdam because it is accessible in one flight from Aberdeen, but there are many European cities which now see large numbers of short- term visitors. The advantage of a City break is that you can come and go on any days of the week that you select, normally using scheduled aircraft to spend 3 or 4 nights in a city, with a complete selection of differing hotels. Imagine flying to Barcelona, direct from Edinburgh, for 3 nights, staying in a smart city hotel full of character which only offers Bed and Breakfast because there are so many restaurants that you would want to try for lunch and dinner in the evening. Because time is limited you don't wait hours for transfer coaches, but are transported to your hotel by taxi or car. Cities like Barcelona are excellent for walking about, seeing the marinas, waterfront, Las Ramblas shopping street and the Food market. Though no direct flights exist from Scotland, Vienna is another popular destination, with all its imperial splendour, Art Nouveau, waltzes and coffee houses. A grand ring of 19th century palaces surrounds the mediaeval city, with its narrow streets, hospitable inns, cafes and shops. Two sets of customers have recently joined a break to Vienna with a trip to Budapest, using the train to travel from one to the other. Both cities boast much of the 19th century grandeur of the Hapsburg Empire. It's Bela Bartok and Liszt Museums in Budapest as it is the Strauss family in Vienna. There are many suitable Italian cities to visit for a short time, and Florence is one of the finest settings of them all. On the banks of the River Arno, Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance and the city of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto, Dante and their patrons the Medici family. When you are there a visit to the Uffizi Gallery and Museum is a must! There are direct flights now from Edinburgh to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland. Krakow is rich in museums, art galleries, concert halls and churches; as a university city it comes alive at night in cellar bars, restaurants and jazz clubs. Like Prague this city largely escaped destruction during the World War II. In Prague only one building was hit during that war, and it is now known as the American Church in honour of its bombers!

Some of the best spots to find Dragonflies and Damselflies include the Dragonfly Pond and the Gravel Pit Pond at Culbin. Both ponds are easily accessed from the Hill 99 trail.
Damsel Macho at Culbin The damsels can be superb at this season, especially the males. Find a good patch of water with some sedges or other water plants sprouting at it’s fringe and you could be in for a treat. Damselflies give a blur of colour to many Scottish wetlands in summer. A blue that manages to be both pale and eye catching is one of the shades to spot. It could belong to the body of a male common Blue Damselfly. The most widespread of our summer Damselflies, the common blue is both beautiful and intriguing. Males often wait in groups on plant stems, alert for the arrival of females. To start mating the male grasps the female by the neck, then, if she chooses to continue, she curves her body under his in what entomologists call a ‘mating wheel’.
30
It looks awkward but these Damsels are adept. They can even hold the full wheel position as they flutter, clasped together over the water margins.
Culbin is no ordinary forest and its fragile shoreline is no ordinary coast. Culbin is a wonderful place to walk, cycle and ride. The Hill 99 trail starts from Wellhill car park (signposted from both Forres and Brodie on the A96). The trail leads you along winding forest paths and through mossy clearings. It also has a squirrel’s eye view of Culbin from the tower on Hill 99. Why Hill 99? Well it was named by early foresters as it’s the tallest dune in Culbin and it stands at 99 feet. For more information on the Damsels or Culbin then contact the Forestry Commission on 01466 794161 or email: moray&aberdeenshire@forestry.gsi. gov.uk
After one of the coldest winters on record, followed by the driest March and April on record, late spring and early summer was thoroughly wet and cool, and some gale force winds blew for good measure. All this has provided very stressful conditions for our lawns this year so far, although the farmers and gardeners in the south-east will no doubt have welcomed some of our rain. We are now spreading a slow release fertiliser for the summer, and doing a second weedkill spray. The first weeds to appear each year include old favourites such as daisies and dandelions (there seemed to be a dandelion epidemic around the Moray Firth this spring), but now we are seeing clover and buttercups getting going big time. The rain doesn’t only get the grass growing but the weeds love it too. The biggest problem we see on lawns (at all times of the year) is mowing too short, usually a man-thing I have to say. We recommend a cut not shorter than 1”. The grass will look greener with a bit of leaf left. It will be stronger too as it uses the leaf surface to absorb moisture, air and light. This allows it to grow more vigorously and it will be in a better condition to take up any fertiliser it is being offered. The worse thing is, a weak, poorly, scalped lawn is not strong enough to fight off competition from moss and weeds. In our area, moss needs little encouragement and is the No.1 issue on our lawns. (Insert photo 007) Use caption:Green Thumb at the seaside !
Specific problems to look out for at this time of year include Red Thread, a fugal disease which blooms in periods of high humidity and a little warmth (our summer). It is very common, occurring every year on many lawns, we have already seen outbreaks
around Nairn this year. Typically presenting as reddish/brown spikes of grass in patches, it can even turn pinkish with a white cotton wool type bloom on top in severe cases. Once established, if humidity continues (and it usually does round here), it can spread and last right through until the first frosts. It wont kill the grass, but it can be pretty unsightly for the rest of the year, and some lawns and microclimates get it year after year. We apply a fungicide spray to affected lawns to kill off the spores and one application is usually successful if treated early enough. As with most plant care, sharp tools and clean cutting are one way of preventing ragged ends and entry points for disease. Keep your lawnmower blade sharpened. (Insert photo Red Thread) use caption:Red Thread
For many this will be family holiday time, and the grass will be swaying in the breeze on your return. Resist the temptation to cut it right back all in one go, it will look traumatised for some time. Start with a high cut and reduce over a few weeks. We actually have a growth retardant we can apply before the holidays, and it slows the grass right down for 4 – 6 weeks ! For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos go to www.greenthumb.co.uk or contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE lawn analysis on 01667 404774. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Cawdor and cover the whole Moray Firth area.

Riders will ride to 5 locations along a predefined route of approximately 100 miles. At each stop the rider (and pillion if taking part) will collect a card to form their poker hand then return to Toms to submit their hands. The entry fee is £10 (riders and pillions can both enter), which includes food and refreshments at Tom's afterwards and a free ticket for a raffle, with many great prizes (see below), which have been donated by local companies and individuals. Further raffle tickets can be purchased on the day. WDCS (the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) is calling on members of the public to become part time whale and dolphin spotters in order to help the conservation charity build up a better understanding of these animals in local waters.
otters required. p s in lph o dD n a e l ha W
WDCS’s Shorewatch programme (supported by Scottish Natural Heritage) has been rolled out across Scotland in recent months and is already proving to be very popular. Shorewatch relies on community volunteers to monitor the presence of whales, dolphins and porpoises around Scotland’s coastline in order to raise awareness and capture vital data crucial to the long term future of these amazing animals. The objective of Shorewatch is for community members to become stewards of whales, dolphins and the marine habitat which is their home, and becoming a Shorewatcher is pretty simple. WDCS is running a number of training days during which volunteers will receive training on how and when to watch whales and dolphins, how to use the equipment provided, how to identify specific species, what to do if you come across a stranded animal, and where the best spots are to see amazing creatures. This all helps to ensure that the data collected is done so in the same way each time. Once trained, volunteers can go out when they feel like it, armed with scientific binoculars, and carry out regular 10-minute watches at specific sites to help learn more about how these animals use our coastline, information which will help
in the protection of these animals for future generations. So, if you like to get out and about and are keen to see more of your local wildlife then Shorewatch is for you.
coastline; and this is why community participation is so important to the long term management of marine species andtheir homes.”
The data collected helps to better understand the movements of coastal species and to inform decision makers. It is vital to know which areas might be key habitats for whales and dolphins and monitor how they use these areas over time. Such data will also be valuable towards informing planning decisions on future developments. WDCS Head of Scottish Policy, Sarah Dolman, commented on the need for the Shorewatch Programme saying, “It is vital to understand which areas are key for these creatures. We basically need to have eyes on the sea around the entire Scottish

Often overlooked as young gull’s, closer inspection reveals the truth behind the name Sky Pirates as Skuas have a rather unusual feeding habit. They select their prey, a favourite being the Kittiwake, and pursue their victim in a high speed ariel dogfight. Now the end result is not to kill the kittiwake but to frighten it enough for it to regurgitate its last meal, thus making it lighter and easier to fly away from the danger. This is when the chase ends and the Skua feeds happily on the recently ejected food! Great Skua
has two distinct colour phases, one is sinister overall dark brown and the other has pale cream underparts, neck and face with a dark cap and breast band. If you get a good enough view you will notice two slightly longer central tail feathers. To see this skulduggery taking place visit any headland towards the end of the month. Burgheads high coastal lookout point and Lossiemouth Harbour are both excellent places to start. Look for any good concentrations of gulls at sea, keep watching and hopefully before long you will see the chase begin.
Our two most common Skuas are the Great Skua, also known as a Bonxie, and Arctic Skua. The former is a large bulky bird, overall dark brown with very obvious white wing patches. The Arctic Skua is a slimmer bird and
August also marks the beginning of the Autumn migration and the chance to see some of our winter birds in full plumage, but more on that next month... So until next time, good birding.
