Browsing the Internet
Happy New Year! Hopefully your computers have functioned stoically over the holiday period and your systems have been running trouble free. In all likelihood that old PC is running a bit slower than it should and all of the information flying around about what you should & shouldn’t do on the Internet is leaving you, at best, confused! Hopefully we can use our monthly blog to help you get over that & dispel some of the popular myths surrounding your PC & the internet. On occasion it might even be entertaining! For January we are focusing on Web Browsers and which ones you should or shouldn’t use. Most people will immediately think of one of 3 browsers if you start talking about the Internet - Internet Explorer, Firefox or Chrome, with Safari and Opera occasionally getting a look-in. Now there are alternatives but we don’t come across them often, so I won’t mention them. Essentially, any of these browsers are absolutely fine & from a security perspective there is very little to choose between them, and we have stats to back that up. One thing you must remember to do is keep the browser up-to-date with the latest patches & also to update any plug-ins that you have e.g. Java, Flashplayer, Shockwave. As long as you do this, then use whichever of these browsers you like the best, even if it’s just because it looks pretty! Check out our website for a lot more information.

The Clavie 11th January Why 11th January? This is the date of the Burning of the Clavie, a fire festival unique to Burghead, which greets the New Year, first recorded in records of the Presbytery of Elgin 1655. Banned by the Church in the 17th18th centuries as idolatrous, the earlier history behind this fire festival is unrecorded. Such ceremonies may have pagan origins, and at Burghead could date back to the pre-Christian Pictish occupation. The significance of the 11th January dates back to the 1750’s, when the Julian calendar was reformed in Britain and the new Gregorian calendar was introduced. People rioted demanding back their 11 days but not in Burghead. Brochers decided to have the best of both worlds, by celebrating New Year twice on 1st January and 11th January. Now every 11th January the flaming Clavie (a barrel full of staves) is carried round the town by the Clavie Crew followed by a large crowd. Certain favoured residents along the route have a lucky burning ember delivered to their door. The final destination of the Clavie is the Doorie Hill on the ramparts of the ancient fort, where it is firmly wedged. After refueling several times, it is allowed to burn out and fall down the hill, when still smoldering embers are eagerly gathered.
Possession of a piece of the Clavie is said to bring good luck for the coming year and pieces are sent round the world to exiled ‘Brochers’. The Burning of the Clavie dates much further back
page 4 - January 2011
than the 1750’s, of course. Before the coming of Christianity, the priests of the day were the Druids, the men of wisdom and learning. The common people held them in
superstitious reverence. Many were the strange rites performed at their hands, many the sacrifices they demanded. Their chief instrument of ceremonial was fire. It was the great purifier. Shaw, the 18th century historian of the Province of Moray recounts a Druid rite, which was enacted when a disease broke out amongst the cattle. The fires in the houses around were extinguished. Sparks were ‘forced’ by rubbing pieces of wood together, and from these, bunches of juniper were lit, to be burned in the stalls of the cattle. The smoldering branches were carried in a basket (Gaelic word ‘cliabh’ pronounced cleeav) among the cattle in order to combat infection. When this had been done, the flaming juniper was carried round the houses in the vicinity, to rekindle the fires on their hearths. From such a custom is surely derived the Burning of the Clavie. On that anniversary night of pagan ceremonial, Burghead reverts to the mood of primitive times, reenacting some form of fire worship many centuries have not forgotten.

How good were you over Christmas? At this time of year this question almost certainly refers to our eating habits over the festive period! Our answers will depend on how much we did or didn’t restrain ourselves. That is, restrain ourselves when faced with the temptation to gorge ourselves upon tasty morsels and treats. Let’s face it, the pressure is so great. All those special dainties dressed up in alluring packaging enforced by attractive advertising - how can any of us resist! Chocolate, nuts, exotic snacks, roasts, let alone the puddings! What is worse, we don’t even hide such things away in the kitchen cupboards. No. Aren’t they often right under our nose? Often only at arms reach in a bowl or out on a table ready to be grasped as our eyes are glued to the telly! So, no doubt we will all be hearing the “I wasn’t very good this Christmas” followed by “I really ought to lose some weight!” More seriously, for many, the beginning of a new year brings with it
the ‘seasonal blues’. Often Christmas and New Year celebrations function as a bit of an anaesthetic against the reality of life. As we face the early bleak months of the year our lives can seem equally bleak in the aftermath of the holiday season. For some, taking down the decorations provokes a sense of gloom, let alone the first credit card payment demand!
I haven’t yet mentioned what Christmas is all about from a Christian point of view. It is a sign of the times when we could have an extended conversation about Christmas without any mention of what it is all about. Traditionally, Christmas is a season to renew hope for the New Year. It reminds us of God’s most generous and costly gift to us; His beloved Son who came to die and save us from our sins. In contrast, culturally, Christmas is more about the gifts we give and receive, encouraged on by the great wheels of the retail economy. I don’t suppose, however, that the notion of needing to be saved from our sins is something that the majority think of at

Christmas. In fact, I expect that the whole idea of the need of Salvation is foolish to some and offensive to others.
I’m sure many would agree that there are consequences to our conduct over the festive period - a debt to pay whether physically, emotional and/or financial. Likewise, there are spiritual consequences to our conduct through our lives before God. The Bible declares that “…all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The good news is that God’s ‘Christmas gift’ in Jesus pays off the debt our sins accrue; a payment we are helpless to attain ourselves, no matter how good we think we are. This gift is only received and kept by faith alone. Yet this is one gift that many ignore and, so to speak, never unwrap, never appreciate. So, how about you?

Don’t Panic Help is at hand So it’s back to normality after the Christmas and New Year celebrations! How are you feeling now that the festive hype has passed? For some people it’s a welcome return to the usual routine of life. Maybe that’s your experience; you’re quite glad to take down the cards, pack away the decorations and put them in the loft until next year. However for others, if Christmas and New Year is a real time of joy and happiness, it can be a struggle to say goodbye to the holiday period and hello to the regular pattern of life again. Maybe some of you are struggling to get back into the normal routine because you know that you have to face up to your difficult financial position. Perhaps in the last year you’ve lost your job or have struggled to cover your regular outgoings. The Christmas break has maybe taken the focus temporarily away from your problems.
But as January comes and normality resumes again, the reality of your situation remains the same. For a lot of people, the Christmas spending begins to bite as the bank statements or credit card bills come tumbling through your letterbox. You might even have taken out an extra loan to cover the cost of the festive season, potentially adding to existing debts. And so a tight financial position becomes even tougher. If this is you & you’re really struggling to meet the costs of everyday life or have debt which is spiralling out of control then what can you do? Firstly, don’t think you are alone! One effect of being in debt is that you can feel very isolated. However, a recent survey by Credit Action found that during December Citizens Advice dealt with 9,389 new debt problems every working day.
SpotLight Local Interest
Secondly, be assured that there is help at hand! There are a range of services available to help those struggling to make ends meet or repay personal debt. It is often hard to take that first step and admit your need of help. But as hard as it is, this step is crucial to begin getting your finances back on the right track. One such resource is CAP. This initiative has come about through local churches partnering with award winning charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to offer a comprehensive solution to those struggling in debt. Through a combination of budgeting advice, creditor liaison and personal support, CAP can empower people to work themselves out of debt and transform their finances. You might ask, why would churches want to get involved in helping people in the whole area of finance? Simply because we believe that God cares for everyone and that each aspect of our lives is important to him. A common description of God is found in Psalm 86: But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. So this love is reflected by providing a very practical resource to those struggling with debt. CAP’s services are completely free of charge and are available to everyone regardless of your belief or background. So hopefully, whatever your situation is as we begin this New Year, you will be able to look ahead to the coming year with confidence. For those facing financial issues, may you know that help is at hand, and through resources such as CAP that you need not feel alone or isolated. Instead be assured that there are people who care about your situation. Above all, be encouraged that the Lord is indeed a compassionate and gracious God who cares deeply for you. In recent weeks it has, unsurprisingly, been nonstop campaigning, questioning and challenging on the impact of the Defence Review on Moray. In some lighter moments I have, however, got along to see some of our local football teams in action. A particular note of congratulations to both Elgin City and Buckie Thistle who have both progressed to the fourth round of the Scottish Cup, with Buckie travelling to Third Division Team East Stirling and Elgin off to play old rivals Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It will certainly be an interesting New Year for these two Moray teams. Good luck to both of them in their games. Ang us R o b er tso n M P
Like many of my constituents my work means that I am away from home for several days at a time, making the balance of work and family quite a challenge. One interesting side effect that became apparent recently is that the time at home has become a crash course (with my son as teacher) in the workings of WWE wrestling, which my eldest son became an expert in after only a week of watching! His new fascination did remind of the days of rivalry between Big Daddy (the hero) and Giant Haystacks (the villain) I used to watch on the TV at weekends - a far cry from the tanned body builders that are the wrestling stars of today. Council News
EXTRACTS FROM DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 21ST OCTOBER 2010 OF FORRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Public Session • Janet Kennedy, a prospective candidate in the forthcoming byelection for a position in the Moray Council, took the opportunity to address the Community Council. She said that she had decided to stand, as an independent candidate, as she was aware that Forres residents were becoming increasingly unhappy that Moray Council were failing to take account of their views. She, like many others, was set back by the recent shocking news which would have grave effects on the area. She told members that they could contact her on her web site www.janetkennedy.org.uk where peoples concerns would be taken forward if she was elected. • Also wishing to address the meeting was Aaron McLean, the prospective SNP candidate. who was raised, educated and lives in Forres. He said that he would listen to the local communities and intended to act in the best interests of the local people, if elected, to help improve our corner of Moray. He would encourage new initiatives into the town. Secretary’s Report • Letters from Moray Council, NHS and Grant & Geoghegan were received. • The Moray Council Legal Services have written to dispute common good status to Auchernack on the grounds that the use of it by the former town council as a residential home for a statutory duty removed common good dedication. • The Chief Executives Office notified us of the Moray Council Budget Consultation for 2011/12 and invited us to

attend a meeting to contribute our views. Members had noted that one of the propositions suggested that the common good car parks in the town be turned into pay parking. Cllr Mackenzie said that the land had been bought by Provost Forbes & the Town Council, from both businesses and private owners alike with the intention of providing free parking for the townsfolk. As that land had been purchased by the Council with Council funds it became common good on the dissolution of the Town Council under common good law. • Educational Services notified us of their intention to create, as part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy plan, Community Sports Hubs in Moray. A follow up meeting is planned for early/mid November. • NHS Grampian are holding a consultation on Draft Strategy for Maternity Services 2010 - 2015 and would like responses by 22nd November. • Grant & Geoghegan have invited the Community Council members to attend a drop in exhibition in the Community Centre on 14th October to display their housing plans for site R3 Ferrylea, Grantown Road, Forres. The Secretary reminded members that this invitation had been circulated by email, in order that members might attend it. Chair’s Report • The Chair read out a letter from Moray Cllr Young sendng the Community Council his best wishes for the future on the occasion of his standing down as a Moray Councillor. Apple and Pear Crumble with Fresh Egg Custard
SpotLight Chef’s Confidential
As I predicted the long winter has certainly started early, the snow has come upon us with her friend cold, cold nights, so to counter these long nights I think we have come to one of the most loved winter desserts Crumble. There are many varieties and a combination of this classic but this is the one we serve at Knockomie and is very simple and tasty. The basic crumble mix is half fat to flour and the same amount of sugar as fat (or a little more if you want it sweeter). So in general to make enough of the crumble mixture if you want a deeper crumble topping you can just half it again F o r t h e c ru m b l e 100g/4oz Flour 50g/2oz Butter or Margarine Zest of Lemon, Orange and Lime 50 g/2oz Medium Oatmeal (Optional) 50g/2oz Sugar Rub the butter into the flour until they come together and are of a Sand texture, add the zest, Oatmeal if adding and sugar. Fo r t h e A p ple a nd P e ar M ix 4 Cooking Apples Cored and Skinned 4 Pears Cored and Skinned 1 table spoon Mixed Spice (to taste, or none) 100g/4oz Caster Sugar 50g/2oz Unsalted Butter 100 ml Apple Juice 100 ml Water Cut Apples And Pears Into roughly about 8 pieces each, put into a pan with the Mixed Spice, sugar, butter and liquid, cook on a medium heat until they are just tender still with a little bite to them they should take roughly about 8 to 10 minutes. Tip the fruit into a sieve and leave to cool slightly. page 22 - January 2011
F o r t h e c u s t a r d ( C rè m e A n g l a i s e ) 75 ml milk 75 ml double cream 1 vanilla pod split open length ways 4 egg yolks 50g caster sugar Place the milk and cream in a sauce pan, scrape out the vanilla seeds with a tea spoon and add to the liquid, bring slowly to the boil. Place the egg yolks in a heat proof bowl, add the sugar, and whisk to combine. Place the heat proof bowl over a simmering pan of water and whisk constantly until the egg yolk double in quantity, gradually add the boiled milk to the yolks, it will thicken to a custard when it reaches 83°c. Preheat the oven to 200°c/Gas mark 6. Share the Apples and Pears into Ramekins, a small oven proof tray or metal cutters, top with the crumble topping and bake till golden brown. Serve with your custard for a lovely warming dessert. February is the most romantic month of the year, and our Valentines menu is on our website, remember to book early 01309 673146 or email stay@knockomie.co.uk.

Continued from page 20 • He told the meeting that he had received a 12 month review from the Citizens Advice Bureau for the last year. • Scottish Water had invited him to attend a public meeting in Inverness on the 16th of November. • The Chair read a brief statement by the Community Council. “The recent news about the Nimrod Force and RAF Kinloss is as unexpected as it is devastating. The cancellation of the Nimrod fleet is not only a deep blow for the local area but it is a body blow to the National Security. Who better to understand this than the People of the Forres area. Our thoughts go out not only to the local people affected but also to all those airmen and their families at Kinloss whose lives are now to be turned totally upside down. These are the short term difficulties to be dealt with and the long term problems are yet to surface ie. in the job market, business and the housing market. The future of Forres is now even more in the hands of the people of Forres”. External Groups Report • Cllr Mackenzie told the meeting that the Heritage Group had failed to obtain funding through Moray Council officer Reni Milburn. • Youth Rep Ross Kennedy thanked the Community Council, on behalf of the Pupils Forum for their visit. • Cllr Maclean said that he had had no satisfactory response, despite repeated requests, from Councillor Bell to his complaint that it was against planning law, SPP11 that a playing field at Thornhill could be used by the NHS without Sport Scotland being consulted. The same situation exists regarding Bogton Park, Sports Scotland has not been

This information has now been forwarded to Councillor Ogilvie to follow up. • Councillor Bell was also due to provide further information regarding the Flash Flooding issue. Again this information has been passed to Councillor Ogilvie. • Cllr McDowell reported to the meeting that the Soccer 7’s/Bowls pavilion had been returned to Moray Council for repairs to be carried out under guarantee. • Moray Cllr Ogilvie told us that our observations on the Gypsy/Traveller site would come before the Communities Committee on the 7th of December. Treasurer’s Report • The Treasurer informed the meeting that our account stood at £477.03 Following the decision at the Sept P & R meeting in relation to Community Council funding he asked members if they had any outstanding claims against the account prior to it being audited. He was reminded that £25 had been voted to cover the cost of a wreath for the 14th of November A.O.C.B. • Cllrs were reminded that under the terms of our Constitution the Officers of the Community Council were due to be re-elected. Members were asked if any wished to submit themselves for election to any post.
