Highland Games The origin of games and sports predates recorded history. An example of a possible early Highland games venue is at Fetteresso, although that location is technically a few miles south of the Scottish Highlands. It is reported in numerous books and Highland games programs, that King Malcolm III of Scotland, in the 11th century, summoned contestants to a foot race to the summit of Craig Choinnich (overlooking Braemar). King Malcolm created this foot race in order to find the fastest runner in the land to be his royal messenger. Some have seen in this apocryphal event the origin of today's modern Highland games. During various times of English occupation, from before the Wars of Independence to the suppression after the Jacobite wars, the men of Scotland were forbidden to bear or train with arms, in an attempt to prevent another popular Scottish uprising. Scots continued to train for war; they simply did so with the implements of war replaced with the implements of the Highland games.
There is a document from 1703 summoning the clan of the Laird of Grant, Clan Grant. They were to arrive wearing Highland coats and "also with gun, sword and dirk". From this letter, it is believed that the competitions would have included feats of arms. However, the modern Highland games are largely a Victorian invention, developed after the Highland Clearances.

Scottish hammer throw: This event is similar to the hammer throw as seen in modern-day track and field competitions. A round metal ball (weighing 16 or 22 lb for men or 12 or 16 lb for women) is attached to the end of a shaft about 4 feet in length and made out of wood, bamboo, rattan, or plastic. With the feet in a fixed position, the hammer is whirled about one's head and thrown for distance over the shoulder. Weight throw, also known as the weight for distance event. A weight is made of metal and has a handle attached either directly or by means of a chain. The implement is thrown using one hand only. The longest throw wins. Weight over the bar, also known as weight for height. The athletes attempt to toss a 56 pound weight with an attached handle over a horizontal bar using only one hand. Each athlete is allowed three attempts at each height. Mu sic For many Highland games festival attendees, the most memorable of all the events at the games is the massing of the pipe bands. Normally held in conjunction with the opening and closing ceremonies of the games, as many as 20 or more pipe bands will march and play together It is, in fact, the music of the bagpipe which has come to symbolise music at the Games and, indeed, in Scotland itself. In addition to the massed bands, nearly all Highland games gatherings feature a wide range of piping and drumming competition, including solo piping and drumming, small group ensembles and, of course, the pipe bands themselves. In ve r n es s g am es The date of the first gathering on the banks of the River Ness by our ancestors has been lost in the mists of time and will forever remain a mystery. What we do know is that back in 1822 fundraising took place in the town to revive those ancient Games and to give the Capital of the Highlands a Highland Games that its townsfolk could be proud of.
Ev en ts Caber toss: A long tapered pine pole or log is stood upright and hoisted by the competitor who balances it vertically holding the smaller end in his hands. Then the competitor runs forward attempting to toss it in such a way that it turns end over end with the upper (larger) end striking the ground first. Competitors are judged on how closely their throws approximate the ideal 12 o'clock toss on an imaginary clock. Stone put: This event is similar to the modern-day shot put as seen in the Olympic Games. Instead of a steel shot, a large stone of variable weight is often used. How can a medium-powered laser burn through steel in a matter of seconds, while the most powerful spotlight can only make it warm? Both may have the same electrical power requirements. The difference is unity. A laser beam works in union with each other but spotlight works differently. During the decay process, Laserbeam release a photon, a particle of light. The photon moves along and “tickles” another molecule, inviting another photon to join him on his journey. Then these two photons “tickle” two more molecules and invite two more photons to join the parade. Soon there is a huge army of photons marching in step with each other. It is this unity that gives the laser its power. A spotlight may have just as many photons, but each is going its own independent way, occasionally interfering with other photons. As a result, much of its power is used covering a wider area and therefore cannot be focused to do any hard work as a laser beam can burn through a steel. However, the laser, because of its unity, is like an army marching in tight
formation and is able to focus all its power on its objective. Unity is “The state or quality of being in accord; harmony” In John 17:20-26, Jesus prays for our Unity ‘My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one.’ Our Lord knew the greatest test to the success of His mission on earth still lay ahead. The devil would wage a war against his troops - the disciples, and the only way to be victorious was to be United. We face many challenges today in our world, and we are all stronger if we become united. There would be no war to fight, just love. Christians today could help make a peaceful world a reality. EXTRACTS FROM THE RATIFIED MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THURSDAY 15TH APRIL 2010 OF FORRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Public Session • Mr Peter Wilson of Mackenzie & Cruickshank returned to tell us that no further approaches had been made from the Flood Relief Team and that he felt that it would now be settled by the reporter after an expensive Public Enquiry. Moray Cllr Bell said that Mr D Gowans had made approaches through Mackenzie & Cruikshank’s solicitors but had not received a response. Moray Cllr Young pointed out that the Council Legal Officers advise Cllrs but do not instruct then as to a response. Mr Wilson said that a visit to the site would have shown the Cllrs the problems that would be created. C Cllr Mackenzie said that he understood the problem and that whilst Mr Wilson might be compensated for loss of trade, no compensation would be given to the workers laid off as a result, jobs would go. Moray Cllr Young said that he was sure that everything was being done to minimise the problems caused by the construction. • A member of the public asked the Moray Cllrs what purpose the electronic bus timetable at the town hall stop served. She said that the timetable, nicknamed ‘Darth Vader’ because of its design had cost £5,000 to install and had broken down five times since its installation.
Secretary’s Report • The Secretary drew members attention to a letter from Mr D Bruce, Environmental Protection Officer, concerning a memorial to the Nimrod Crew, lost in Afghanistan in 2006. It required, at short notice, our views on locating it adjacent to the Forres War Memorial. After some discussion the Secretary was instructed to reply that subject to the Royal British Legion being consulted & that adequate room was left for Remembrance Day ceremonies around the War Memorial the Community Council had no objections. It was also suggested that an alternative site could be by the War Veterans Cottages, adjacent to the model Nimrod page 10 - July 2010
installed there. • Members were also asked to study options to determine Community Council funding, a process which had been interrupted last year prior to our election, following an email from John Ferguson. Members studied the options given and selected option 2, a £500 grant plus a per capita amount based on the population, as being the fairest. They totally rejected any suggestion of combining Community Councils & Neighbourhood Forums funding into one pot per area. The Secretary was instructed to notify Mr Ferguson of this selection. • The Secretary told the meeting that a response to our letter to the CEO of Moray Council with respect to our objection to the Community Councils being associated with the Community Support Unit and the Area Forums had been received. Moray Council respect our decision not to be a part of the CSU plans.
External Groups Report Cllr Hayward said that she had raised the failures of the e-planning system at a meeting with Mr Burnie. Cllr Hayward said it was undemocratic when some councils allowed access to comments and Moray Council did not. • Cllr McDowell queried Moray Cllr Ogilvie’s statement about the Over 60’s Lunch Club closure being in abeyance & she confirmed this. He said that Irene Weeden & Heather Shaw had denied this & said that it was closing. Moray Cllr Young said that the closure of the after school club was caused by lack of supervisors as well but Community Cllr Ferris said that he thought the problem was that the community centre and staff were not user friendly. • Cllr Mackenzie said that M Cowie was organising planting, that FIB had got a new treasurer and that they were working with the FAAA and Christmas Lights Committees this year

While it is a fairly surreal statement to read in a letter, it is actually one of the more creative ways of getting an issue to the attention of MP’s. In this case it is the very worthy Bowel Cancer Campaign, which, with the support of TV personality Lynn Faulds Wood is doing a fantastic job raising awareness of a serious, but also preventable and curable form of cancer. I can recommend a visit to the campaign’s website at www.bowelcancer.tv It does go to show, though, that campaigns, even on very serious issues, can have a big impact through humour and get people to sit up and take notice.
Ang us R o b e rts on M P I really enjoy informing fellow MSP’s in the Scottish Parliament about how Moray is home to around half of Scotland’s whisky distilleries. I like to tell them that my summer constituency tours are great fun! Representing Speyside and Moray does have its advantages. For instance, it’s now traditional to hold the first round of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival whisky judging in the Scottish Parliament before the finals take place prior to the annual dinner. As the host MSP, I am now appointed a judge and have to sit alongside the professionals and sample anywhere between 50 and 60 Speyside drams, it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it! However, if any reader is worried about my health or their local MSP setting a bad example, don’t worry, as we only take a small sip of each dram and usually spit it out before eating some more oatcake and washing out our mouths to help prepare for the next tasting! This annual event is now one of my favourite parliamentary duties!

Dyke & Kintessack Circular Forres INTRODUCTION: A circular route linking the rural communities of Dyke and Kintessack, with a spur to Broom of Moy, and on to the wider network of paths around Forres. THE ROUTE & FEATURES OF INTEREST: Start - Dyke Community Hall Car Park. Signing - The route is marked with timber finger posts and waymarkers with LIGHT BLUE arrows. A signed shortcut is available that links Dyke and Kintessack directly along the minor road, allowing users the option of two shorter loops. BARRIERS: Bridge with steps located at Wellhead.

Orienteering
Local Interest
Take a new direction! Pub quiz sports question. Which Moray sporting event has drawn the most participants in the last 10 years? A well-known event like the Moray Marathons is the obvious answer but surprisingly it’s orienteering. When we heard that almost 4000 runners had converged on Culbin Forest in the summer of
2007 for what we thought was a minority sport, we asked local club Moravian Orienteers to explain why so many were attracted to Moray. Orienteering has been around for a long time. It was invented in Victorian times by the Swedish army and introduced into Scotland in the 1960s. In essence it’s a cross-country race, but one with one big difference. Instead of following a set route, runners must work out for themselves how to get round the course. The idea is to visit several checkpoints along the way. At the beginner level, they are close together in easilylocated positions, mainly reached by running along tracks. At the other end of the scale they can be far apart in the remotest places, as far as possible from obvious landmarks. Courses vary between 1 Km and 18 km and can take place not only in rugged mountain and forest areas, but also in parks and towns. Even Forres has its own orienteering map! In orienteering it’s rarely the fastest runner who wins. It’s sometimes referred to as ‘cunning running’ as it’s the runner who navigates fastest who comes out on top. It’s very easy to make navigation mistakes, especially on harder courses, and the knack is to make sure your legs don’t go faster than your brain! There are thousands of areas mapped for orienteering in the UK, and Moray has some of the world’s finest orienteering terrain. Forested sand dune areas like Culbin and Roseisle provide great competition areas because the intricate contour shapes tax even the best navigators, while the going under foot is never too rough. This enables older, less agile people to take part too. Orienteering competitions are divided into 5-year age groups with courses getting shorter as you get older, so people can keep on competing right into their 80s when athletic ability might be on the wane but the mind is still just as sharp. Moray’s forests also have lots of paths that make them perfect for beginner-level

courses. Every event lays on courses for the very young, and competitive orienteering can start as young as age 7 or 8. The Culbin event in 2007 was part of a 6-Day festival based in Grantown on Spey, attracting over 1000 overseas competitors as well as 2500 Brits. In 2008 the forest hosted the British Championships where another 2000 runners descended on the tiny village of Kintessack. Anyone can take part, whatever the level of event, and this one was no exception where young local children were able to line up alongside elite national champions whose courses shared the same area. Lately there’s been a boom in adventure running for which navigation at speed is a fundamental part. Local schools have recently discovered orienteering and many have their own school maps. The area’s Active Schools co-ordinators stage inter-school events where hundreds of children have learned to map read in an exciting and active way. All of Moray’s schools come together at Gordonstoun every April for an annual schools festival and this year youngsters can also look forward to a special competition. On June 13th, Culbin Forest will be the venue for the first ever Moray and Highland Junior Orienteering Championships. It’s aimed at novices who have discovered the sport at school, and anyone aged 16 or under on the day can take part. With entry classes for boys and girls in 2-year categories from under 11
upwards, the event will be combined with a mainstream competition open to anyone. This should be an exciting chance for budding adventure runners to take part in a big event at Scottish Orienteering’s Hampden Park! With the 2-yearly Scottish 6-Day Orienteering Festival returning to the Moray Coast in August 2013 it’s the perfect place to start getting in training for what might be Moray’s biggest sporting event of the next decade! Moravian Orienteers stage at least one local event every month. They also organise training sessions and enter teams in races further afield. Barbecue Sauce Spare Ribs
Chef’s Confidential
Ingred ients 1.8kg pork spare ribs 2 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, peeled and chopped 4 clove garlic, crushed 2 red chillies, finely chopped 2 tsp fennel seeds, crushed 115g dark brown sugar 100ml dark soy sauce 600ml tomato ketchup black pepper Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Place the spare ribs on a baking sheet and roast for 25-30 minutes until cooked through.
While the ribs are cooking heat the olive oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry until fragrant. Add the chilli, fennel seeds and sugar and cook, stirring often, until sugar melted. Add the soy sauce and tomato ketchup. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Bring to the boil and simmer for around 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Once the ribs have cooked through, remove them from the oven and brush liberally with half the barbecue sauce, leaving half for later. Return the ribs to the oven and cook for a further 10 minutes to glaze the ribs. Serve with the remaining barbecue sauce on the side. To enjoy these ribs at a barbecue, follow the recipe as above the end of step two. Brush the ribs with barbecue sauce and cook over a preheated barbecue until glazed, then serve. Happy Cooking!
