Coastal Defences and World War II in Moray
SpotLight Local Interest
On the 1st of September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain declared war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. Until World War II, Britain successfully relied on its strong Navy to protect its shores. Even during World War I, a German invasion seemed unlikely. By the summer of 1940 however, Britain and her allies had suffered defeats in Norway, Denmark and France. German forces occupied the Channel Islands and Hitler issued Directive 16, Operation SEALION, outlining the invasion of Great Britain. Germany expected Britain to surrender but the British did not.
“We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender” - the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, House of Commons 4th June 1940 The British Army was undermanned and illequipped having suffered defeat in France. It seemed like invasion was inevitable but Britain planned to do everything it could to stop the enemy. A defence plan was developed that involved the entire country, from the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland to the south coast of England. Today, archaeological remains of these coastal defences are still visible all over Britain; they remain as testimony to the defiant spirit of a nation isolated and under attack. The focus of General Ironside's defence plan for Britain was the construction of land defences during 1940 and 1941. A German invasion of Britain would bring with it armoured tanks. The main aim was to combat the movement of tanks by using a combination of natural and man-made obstacles. Sections of coastline, where the enemy could easily land, had a series of defences built along them, known as forming a ‘crust’. These coastal defences are evident at Roseisle, Lossie and Culbin.
fields, walls of scaffolding and barbed wire fences supported these defences. Ports were a major enemy target and so coastal gun batteries were placed nearby to protect them. There is one located at Lossie Forest. After the fall of France, Polish troops were evacuated alongside the British from Dunkirk. Once they arrived in Scotland, the Polish created the 1st Polish Army Corps. The army was under the command of Generals Stanisław Maczek and Marian Kukiel. The Polish forces helped build and man anti-invasion defences along the Scottish coast, including at Lossiemouth. The Polish troops were popular in Scotland. “I can remember marching up Sauchiehall Street and the welcome we received in our new uniforms.” Dr Kazimierz Piotr Durkacz in Henderson's (2001) ‘The Lion and the Eagle’. In 1945, the war ended but many Poles could not return home. The Soviet Union and communism had taken control of their homeland. Many families sent word to loved ones to stay in Scotland.Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit (NOFU) recruited skilled lumberjacks to come over to Scotland to cut down trees for the war effort. Over three thousand five hundred men volunteered. The island of Newfoundland is located off the east coast of Canada. In 1949 it became part of Canada, but at the start of World War II it was a separate country. Unlike the Canadian Forestry Corps (CFC), which was sent to Britain at the same time, the NOFU was not a military unit. The men were hired on six month long contracts and were paid the same amount as they were paid at home; two dollars per day or twelve dollars a week. Although not in the military, many of the men who volunteered to come over wanted to join the fighting. The work they were doing, however, was as essential to the success of the war as the fighting itself. “They are needed here (Britain) on work of national importance, and cannot be replaced. Moreover, it is not easy to train a man, however strong and fit he may be, to become a good lumberjack.” Mr Edgar Baird, NOFU Manager in W. J. Passingham (1941), Illustrated News
Man-made obstacles included lines of concrete anti-tank blocks that formed a barrier between regularly placed pillboxes. Pillboxes were small concrete structures where a squad of men could stand protected and fire against the enemy at close range. At Roseisle and Lossie Forests, you can still see their remains along the beach. Ditches, mine-

Today the remains of the coastal defences are visible in Culbin, Lossie and Roseisle Forests. The land is managed by Forestry Commission Scotland and one of the key roles of the Commission in their management of this land is the protection of these monuments to the British spirit!

( ( Having spent 22 years as a Padre in the RAF, one often came in for a bit of banter and leg pulling from colleagues. There was always the person who was quick to remind you, “You’ve a good job Padre. Only 1 A.P. and no amendments! A not so subtle jibe that while most personnel had to spend time revising and updating RAF regulations with monotonous regularity, the Padre, on the other hand, had only his or her Bible to consult and there would therefore be no amendments required for that! There were also those who would of course try to test the Padre’s faith with a barbed comment such as, “What do we need religion for Padre, after all it’s just a crutch! The easy response to that repartee being, “Well there’s nothing wrong with a crutch if you’ve only got one leg! It was during one posting to an airbase in Yorkshire and asked to speak to a church group in the Dales, that the concept of a crutch assumed a very different form. The directions given just said, “You can’t miss it. Follow the road to Redmire village until you see the tree

with crutches! Not the banter or leg-pull I suspected, for there it stood in the centre of the village – a tree with crutches! The famous Redmire oak tree is getting on a bit now and so to preserve it, the old gnarled branches have been given some supports. Why go all this fuss over an old oak tree you might ask? When John Wesley, the founding father of the Methodist Church was travelling on one of his preaching tours in the late 18th century, the story goes that he preached underneath it! So, the old Redmire oak preserves the memory of one of the greatest Christian preachers. Of course the tree will not last for ever, even with its ‘crutches’. So, in recent times acorns have been taken from the tree and planted nearby. Alongside the old oak, a new generation of flourishing saplings will carry on a bit of history and it will quite literally be the case that, “From little acorns, mighty oak trees grow! In the Christian faith and following the events of Easter, in one sense like the acorns, the disciples of Jesus Christ began to flourish. “He shall grow up before him as a tender plant Isaiah 53:2. action of God’s Holy Spirit, they were given the strength and courage of their convictions to go into all the world. Those who had seen and witnessed the teaching Jesus Christ became, as it were, the acorns from the master oak. Their task was to share the faith, knowledge and love of God. So it was that from those few disciples the worldwide Christian faith became known. Over the centuries, those handicapped by fears and doubts about life and things to come, have been offered comfort and hope through that faith. If that is a crutch, then at least it’s promoting health and healing, and that can’t be bad by anyone’s standards! a The oak of Redmire, has its descendants just as have the descendants of the Christian faith. I suppose the question for us all to answer in this Year of our Lord 2010 must be this: Who are planting the seeds of faith for the next generation? Will it be you and me? “That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord Isaiah 61:3 Reverend Duncan Shaw, Minister Alves & Burghead Parish Church of Scotland

Twinning Town Activity Along the Moray Firth Coast Twinning links in Moray commenced about 50 years ago and since 1992 have been overseen by The Moray Twinning Association, through which Moray Council gives an annual grant to support Twinning. Moray has a long history of Twinning and currently has five active Twinning’s, some being more active than others. The five links are: Dufftown, twinned with Mortlach in Canada; Elgin twinned with Landshut in Bavaria; Lossiemouth twinned with Hersbruck in Germany; and Forres twinned with Mount Dora in Florida and Vienenburg in Lower Saxony. Although each of these five operate in very different ways they all have the same purpose, and that is to foster social, cultural and educational links. Dufftown - Mortlach, Canada This group is very active and last year three separate groups from Dufftown visited Mortlach in June, July and September. A couple from Mortlach also came across to Dufftown and while here visited their son who is studying at Glasgow, perhaps as a result of twinning.

while experience. There is quite an active social side to the exchange. The two students who visited last year have said, “We both found it an invaluable experience and it helped to substantially broaden our outlook.” Forres – Vienenburg, Germany During the 25 years of the existence of the partnership, regular visits to and from Forres and Vienenburg, both formal and informal, have taken place. In 1985 the first group from Forres went to the twin town and were given a rousing reception. 1994 - 10th Anniversary celebrated in Vienenburg. 2004 - 20th Anniversary celebrated in Forres. 2006 - celebration of the 700th Anniversary of the town of Vienenburg, when a carving by local craftsman Jack Falconer was presented to the Mayor of Vienenburg on behalf of the people of Forres, and now has pride of place in the Council Chambers in Vienenburg. 2009 - the celebration of the 25th Aniversary in Vienenburg. Numerous informal and private visits have been made over the years, most recently to Forres in June 2008 in glorious sunshine. Strong lasting friendships have been made and warm, generous hospitality is always offered to visitors on both sides. It is fun! Twinning is good for tolerance and acceptance of foreign cultures and good for building friendships. All Twinning Societies live and die by the willingness of ordinary people to get involved. That can mean attending the regular local social events arranged by each society, or (for the more adventurous) travelling abroad to meet and stay with people in the twinning town. All of the societies in Moray are listed below and all are constantly on the look-out for new members, so please contact them. If you are reading this in the Nairn area, your closest twinning societies are either Forres or Inverness.
Elgin & District Pipe Band in Landshut High Street 2009
Elgin - Landshut, Bavaria This is a very active link and has been for more than 50 years. Many long lasting friendships have been built up over the years and exchange visits are made regularly. Last year, for example, 42 members headed to Germany for the Royal Wedding, which is re-enacted every four years. School visits also take place regularly in both directions and there is also a link between the firemen in both towns. Lossiemouth - Hersbruck, Germany This group unfortunately went through a bit of a lull and without new blood were in danger of folding, but after a lot of activity by the remaining committee, they have managed to attract new members, and have appointed 5 new committee members. Last year a successful visit was hosted and appears to have a bright future. Forres - Mount Dora, Florida This group facilitates a school exchange every year. Two students are chosen, each year, by application and interview, with parents also being interviewed. Successful students spend about a month in their twin town, or Sister City as it’s known by the residents of Mount Dora. Approximately three weeks are spent attending school where students from both sides find it a very interesting and worthpage 8 - May 2010

EXTRACTS FROM THE DRAFT MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 18TH FEBRUARY 2010 OF FORRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Public Session • The Chair asked Councillor Bell for an update on the situation with Cyclescheme. The Councillor said he had been told that they had not tendered for the contract. The Chair pointed out that according to their website there is no need for Organisations to insist on a tender from them since they had won the Government Tender to supply all Local Authorities, Government organisations and large companies. All that was required was for the organisation to apply, through their web site for support. The Councillor said that he would pass that information on to the NHS. It was pointed out that MC could still apply now for their support now to give their employees a choice. • C Cllr Ferris advised no progress has been made to date regarding the 20 mph zones. He will continue with this matter and as he will not be present at the March meeting, will pass on any information to C Cllr J McDowall. • C Cllr Mackenzie advised the Tolbooth issue received good coverage from the Forres Gazette and Northern Scot. Richard Lochhead MSP was impressed with what had been done so far. Inspectors from Historic Scotland will be making their first visit to the Tolbooth and C Cllr Mackenzie said this would be the difficult part. He also advised that there was no requirement for the installation of disabled access within the Tolbooth. Police Report • The Community Beat Officer, Kevin Skivington said 70 crime files had been recorded with a quarter of those detected. The problems at Waterford have also been actioned by police presence in the compound overnight. Youth disorder is ongoing however plain clothes officers are now involved and
looking out for under age drinking. • Mr Brian Forbes, the owner of the Castle Inn, Caroline Street spoke of his intention to demolish the Inn and sought planning permission to do so however this was refused as it is a listed building. A plan was therefore drawn up to convert the property into three town houses at a cost of £485,000. After discussing with a local property outlet on what price would be expected on their sale, a figure of £120,000 per flat was given. It was therefore not worthwhile having this work carried out. C Cllr Hayward read a letter to Mr Forbes from an adjoining owner who is subjected to debris falling from the property onto her grounds. She also stated the building was in poor visual condition and he had an obligation to maintain the appearance of the property. Mr Forbes invited members of the Community Council to make a site visit and to become involved in the development of the site. • Mr Peter Wilson of Mackenzie & Cruickshank raised the issue of the Findhorn Flood Alleviation Scheme and its impact on the Garden Centre. He advised that he and the directors of the company were not opposed to the Flood Alleviation Scheme but the works planned would have a serious impact on the garden centre which employs 75 staff. Disturbance from heavy plant, disruption to traffic, loss of access and customers being put off by works taking place were of concern. This could also cause health & safety issues coupled with insurance problems. Moray Council were reported to have said it would not be a problem. He asked for support of the Community Council in his discussions with the Flood Relief Team and members agreed to this, whilst pointing

out that we have very little input. Treasurer’s Report • The Treasurer has been told that if he continues to object to only being paid for half a financial year we will be paid monthly. Moray Council do not appear to recognise the October to September financial year, brought in by the new Scheme For Community Councils as guidelines for themselves. All other Councils in Scotland were being paid annually. We would receive no further monies till April when a second instalment should take us to the end of the new financial year. He also advised that previously Community Council funding was based on 2001 Census figures and should remain based on that until the 2011 Census. The guidelines to that have also been changed by Moray Council. A.O.C.B • JCC Meeting : The Chair of the JCC had offered support re our letter sent to Audit Scotland in September 2009. No response has been received and has now being processed through the JCC to our MSP and Audit Scotland. Vice Chairman Hellyer said that if we have a problem we would go to the Councillors. The Association of Community Councils are aware, and are making a case to the Scottish Government and said that Common Good matters had to be sorted. • The Community Council was approached by Ross Kennedy with a view to him being acceptable to the Community Council as a representative of the young people of the town. After discussion members voted unanimously to welcome him as a Youth Representative on the Council. Date of Next Meeting • Thursday 18 March 2010 at 7.30 pm

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival The sights, sounds and tastes of Scotland blended together at the 11th annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival One of the biggest whisky festivals in Europe will take place in Speyside this Spring, with organisers expecting more record-breaking crowds from both home and abroad. The 11th Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival runs from Thursday, 29th April to Monday, 3rd May and sees some of the world’s most iconic whisky distilleries lining up to take part in what has become a major international event on the Scottish tourism calendar. The Festival was established in 1999 to celebrate Scotland’s Malt Whisky Country and to help promote tourism in Moray, and especially Speyside, in the traditionally quieter months. And 10 years later, last year’s ‘dramfest’ served around 250,000 nips to an estimated 24,000 visitors generating an economic benefit of almost £1million. This year five days of whisky, music, food and fun feature in a programme of more than 230 events taking place around Speyside. The impressive lineup for the Festival includes distilleries such as The Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, The Macallan and Benromach – four of over 50 distilleries in Speyside, and just a few of the many distilleries taking part in this year’s festival. Visitors to the festival are also treated to a rare occurrence – the opportunity for a look behind the scenes at other well-known distilleries in the area, usually closed to the public, including Mortlach, Benrinnes and Tomintoul. Festival goers can choose from over 230 different events over the five days ranging from distillery tours, landrover tours and cooperage tours to whisky masterclasses, guided whisky walks, ceilidhs, live music, poetry sessions, locally organised family friendly activities and free events. After enjoying a dram or two in a distillery, at a local hotel or restaurant or participating venue, whisky lovers and wouldbe gourmets can also learn more about the role of whisky as an ingredient or accompaniment. Workshops offering tasting sessions which examine the relationship between whisky and chocolate, lamb, steak and even sausages run during the Festival – check out the Knockomie Hotel in Forres and Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin for more details. A number of distilleries, hotels and restaurants around the region will be hosting lunches and dinners which feature menus prepared to complement the dram or include the spirit in their dishes. page 18 - May 2010
And there’s no better way to work off the excess of a good dining experience than by joining one of the many walks or outdoor activities around Malt Whisky Country during the Festival. Take a gentle “dramble” around the seven distilleries of Dufftown, or join in one of many guided walks with the Speyside Rangers or take advantage of a ‘hike’ with whisky expert Dave Broom to the summit of Ben Rinnes and enjoy the panoramic views across the Cairngorms north to the Moray Firth and south to Lochnagar. There’s also the chance of spotting mountain hare and ptarmigan on other guided walks and off-road trails in the wilder parts of the Cairngorm National park. Visitors can also step back in time and follow in the footsteps of the Speyside smugglers with the launch of The Glenlivet Smugglers’ Trails. The Glenlivet Estate has a fascinating history, much of which is associated with its past connection to illicit whisky distilling and this history, combined with a picturesque landscape of wide open spaces and rolling hills make it a truly memorable place to visit with the chance to relive Glenlivet’s spirited past. The two walks during the Festival accompanied by a Crown Estate Ranger are a 6km and 11km circular walk. Speyside is home to more than half of Scotland’s whisky distilleries, and the Festival certainly succeeds in capitalising on its location at the heart of Malt Whisky Country. The Festival also goes out of its way to ensure that there’s more on offer than just whisky at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Family and free events include a Pipe Band and Mounted Cavalacde through Grantown-on-Spey, the Dufftown and District Pipe Band at Dufftown Memorial Hall, an open air Family Ceilidh at The Square in Aberlour, a ‘Ceilidh by the Castle’ at Brodie Castle with afternoon tea and home baking in a marquee on the castle lawns, the Benromach Forres Theme Day featuring a magnificent collection of vintage and classic vehicles as well as music, entertainment and side stalls and kilt making demonstrations at the Station Tea Room at Allice Littler Park in Aberlour. The sights, sounds and tastes of Scotland blended together at the annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival is sure to guarantee that Festival goers will experience the true taste of the Speyside spirit of hospitality. Check out www.spiritofspeyside.com for further information on all events and for on-line bookings.

SpotLight Chef’s Confidential
Summer Lemon Tart As we are coming in to the summer months a sweet like lemon tart is light and refreshing and any chef worth their name will have this on their menu. P as tr y 500g plain flour 175g icing sugar 250g unsalted butter, at room temperature grated zest of 1 lemon 1 vanilla pod, split open 1 ½ eggs, beaten L e m o n f il l i ng 9 eggs 400g caster sugar grated zest of 2 lemons juice of 5 lemons 250ml double cream
Meanwhile, make the lemon filling. Whisk the eggs with the caster sugar and lemon zest in a large bowl until smooth. Stir in the lemon juice, then add the cream. Continue to whisk until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined. Skim any froth from the top.
D e c o ra t io n 50g icing sugar sprigs of mint Sift the flour and icing sugar on to a work surface and work in the butter. Make a well in the centre and add the lemon zest and seeds scraped from the vanilla pod. Add the eggs. Knead the mixture with your fingers, working as quickly as you can, until everything is combined to a smooth dough. Wrap in plastic film and leave to rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Grease a flan tin with a removable base that is 20cm in diameter and 3.75cm deep. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface to a disc large enough to line the tin and allowing an overhang of not less than 1cm. Lay the pastry gently into the tin.
Reduce the oven temperature 120°C. Pour the cold filling into the hot pastry case (this will ensure that the case is sealed). Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool and set for about an hour. When ready to serve, preheat the grill to very hot. Sift the icing sugar over the top of the tart and place it under the grill to caramelise the sugar to a light golden brown. Alternatively, you can just sprinkle the tart with icing sugar without caramelising it. Cut the tart into slices and decorate each with a sprig of mint. • Tip - The secret of a really good lemon tart is that the filling should be firm and clear and the pastry light and crisp. It should never be cut immediately after it is cooked as it needs time to cool and set for at least an hour, or the filling will be too runny.
Line the pastry case with greaseproof paper and fill with enough dry baking beans or lentils (or indeed any dry pulses) to ensure the sides as well as the bottom are weighted. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove the beans and greaseproof paper and trim off the overhanging pastry, then return the flan case to the oven to bake for a further 10 minutes
