Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings It’s Empty A number of years ago, around this time of year, a Sunday School teacher gave each child in her class a large plastic egg. She asked that during the week they find something that represented new life and hide it inside the egg. The following Sunday all eight eggs were returned. The children were excited as the teacher began to open each one in turn. A flower. A seedling. A butterfly. All signs of new life. As each one was opened the child who brought it proudly claimed the praise from the teacher. The next one she opened had nothing inside, fearing she might cause embarrassment to the child, she quietly set it aside. The wee lad who had returned the empty egg protested, “Why did you miss out my one?”: “Why, it’s empty!” replied the teacher. “Exactly” said the boy, “It’s empty, like the tomb of Jesus, which means new life for all who trust Him!” I wonder if you could take a moment to ponder the simple, yet profound

truth as conveyed by the empty egg. The powerful message of Easter “He is not here: for He is risen, as He said.” It was a dreadful day when Jesus Christ was crucified. The judge had pronounced: “I find in Him no fault at all”, but still sentenced Him to death. As He hung in agony on that cross an inexplicable darkness shrouded the earth for three hours. It was during this period that God poured out His judgment on account of sin upon the Lord Jesus Christ. At the end of those three hours Jesus cried, “It is finished”, He then bowed His head and died. “Christ died for our sins”. At the end of that day, two men came and took the body from the cross and laid it in the tomb. On that first ‘Easter Sunday’ everyone who came to the tomb found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. “He was buried” and “He rose again the third day, according to the scriptures”. The triumphant resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ assures us that God’s

work of salvation is complete. New life is freely available to all who will trust in the Lord Jesus for His eternal salvation. “He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them” As you open your hollow egg this Easter, think about its message to you – It’s empty! Jesus Christ is alive. You can have new life. Confess to God that you have sinned; acknowledge that Christ’s death on the cross was on account of your personal sin; accept, by faith, the forgiveness of God, and you will receive His gift of eternal life. Parliament Blog & Tide Times Last month I focused on the concerns being voiced by people across Moray about the proposed budget cuts as Moray Council struggled to balance the books. As the budget has now been set these concerns have become a reality, with residents facing having to pay more with an increase in council tax and extra charges being levied for dealing with garden waste for example, while the services we receive being reduce or removed altogether. Looking on the bright side, at least the weather is striding into spring and hopefully you can read your Spotlight while enjoying the outdoors in garden. Indeed, in some parts of Moray, farmers are busy with lambing and spring calving as well as planning their agricultural season ahead and hoping the problems they faced last year during the long dry season won’t reoccur. This also goes for those householders who are reliant on a private water source and who were left without water during the hot summer months. As always, I am more than happy to be contacted on douglas.ross.mp@parliament.uk or by calling my office in Forres on 01309 679253

Douglas Ross MP

Aging demography and depopulation are longstanding challenges for businesses and communities across the Highlands. It's a constant challenge to sustain a working age population in rural areas. But for the last few decades, we've been able to attract Europeans to settle in Scotland enriching our communities. They are very welcome and we want to encourage them to stay. Of all the losses we face with Brexit, it is the loss of people we will feel the hardest. The people who leave, the people who don't come and the babies who aren't born. We want to help local businesses grow but for that they need people. We need immigration, and all of us, including local politicians must stand up for it.

Alongside community representatives, I have been campaigning to save the Bank of Scotland in Lossiemouth – the last bank in town – from closure. A report from ‘Which?’ magazine published in 2017 showed that Moray is one of the areas hit hardest by bank closures in Scotland. 40% of bank branches in the area have closed in recent years with many communities left with no banks at all. It is ludicrous that the Bank of Scotland is set to abandon Lossiemouth while we prepare for the expansion at the RAF base and the increase in population that will bring. It is particularly hard for the public to stomach when taxpayers’ cash bailed out these banks at their time of need – and now these banks are bailing on communities in Moray. I wrote to the UK Government seeking an intervention to prevent banks from closing the last bank branch in a community – but sadly they refused. People in Lossiemouth need the UK Government to step in and take action to save their last bank – Conservative Ministers must put Lossie’s interests before the big banks.

NEW FOR 2019 Electric cars 1839 - 2039

Probing the Future A new exhibition at the Grampian Transport Museum Last year we told the stop - start story of the electric car from its origins in Aberdeen in 1839 to the present day with a sectioned Nissan Leaf EV. This proved to be topical and popular so for 2019 we are going a step further and probing the future! Its clear now that the electric car will take over from oil burning cars within a much shorter time frame than first thought. Change is accelerating. In the same time frame we will see the introduction of driverless or autonomous cars. A couple of years ago these were firmly in the field of Sci Fi‌..now they are a reality. With help from key stakeholders in the ‘Mobility Revolution’ we have set out the likely time

frame for the adoption of Autonomous cars and who is leading on this, firstly with ‘Robo-Taxis’ by Uber and others in the big cities and eventually filtering out to rural areas. The likely effects on car ownership and looming associated massive social change are outlined in an effort make our visitors aware that we are perhaps witnessing the start of the end of the motoring era. ‘Probing the Future’ will be refreshed every three months, such is the rate of change, to keep it absolutely accurate and topical. These are seriously interesting times for transportation; we are witnessing an historic technological disruption.

Adult Non-Fiction

By Sarah Knott

By Anna Pasternak

What was mothering like in the past? Drawing on a disparate collection of fascinating material - interrupted letters, hastily written diary entries, a line from a court record or a figure in a painting - Mother vividly brings to life the lost stories of ordinary women.

Untitled

Who was the real Wallis: an opportunistic American social climber, a master manipulator or the true love of Edward's life? Anna Pasternak seeks to understand an unusual, deeply misunderstood woman, and the untenable situation she became embroiled in. Using testimony from their inner circle of friends, she presents a very different Wallis Simpson. With empathy, intimacy and thorough research, this book will make readers view her story as it has never been told before.

Although the church has been led by baptist ministers for the last seventeen years, its name has never clearly reflected this. Rev. Dr Jon Mackenzie believed for some time that the name Lighthouse Church lacked sufficient clarity and was keen to make it clear that the church is a member of the Baptist Union of Scotland and felt that the new

Plans include a continuation and possible expansion of its popular Mother and Toddler group (Little Fish), Older Peoples groups and lunches, a new youth group and the possibility of offering existing voluntary groups a regular meeting space. In addition to this, the church plans to continue to build on the popular 'Alpha' courses and the Debt Management advice courses. Pastor Jon remarked that the New Testament speaks regularly of meeting people where they are and this lies at the heart of the intentions of Forres Baptist Church. The purchase and renovation of its own church building will enable it to offer hospitality to Forresians of all ages. Final purchase of the building is scheduled for the summer once they have filled the funding gap of £45,000. Fund raising is going well with nearly 1/3 of the total raised so far, mainly from generous donations by other churches, current members of the fellowship and other local donors who wish the church well. Of course, all donations are welcome and should you wish to contribute then this is possible through the website www.forresbaptistchurch.org. Pastor Jon would like to invite you to visit Forres Baptist Church whether you have ever previously been to church or not - all are welcome – we meet at 10.30 every Sunday morning and enjoy modern and lively worship suited to all ages!

simpler name made that clearer to all. Many people have commented that they were not even aware there was a Baptist church in Forres at all. The new, clearer name, will hopefully make more people aware of the Church’s work in Forres. There is more news for the newly renamed Forres Baptist Church. After renting its current church building from local funeral director's Smith and Catto for the last seven years, the church have just announced that they shortly intend to buy Clovenside Chapel (next to Clovenside Cemetery). Once the building has been acquired, they plan to make some relatively minor internal amendments which will enable a new large meeting room and

The Grass is Waking Up – Last Chance to Scarify! Two key weather events have left most lawns with some recovery needs right now, before the season’s growth gets underway. First, the hot, dry conditions last summer left many lawns dead on their feet, and the ground baked hard. Many won’t actually be dead, but you should be thinking about aerating the ground to de-compact it and provide space in the root zone for new grass this year. Now is also the time to scarify the dead material and winter moss off the surface. This needs done before any spring fertiliser is put down. Once the grass starts growing, it is recommended that no more scarifying is done until the end of the season as it will damage new growth coming through. Second, the mild winter has meant the grass, already weak, has allowed an infestation of moss on many lawns. Aerating and scarifying should be done now, followed by a spring fertiliser. In my experience, that should quickly produce a recovery. You can do this yourself, with a fork and a spring rake, hire machinery, or get us to give you a free quote.

Restaurant Review

A Seafood Stunner ! Small but perfectly formed ! News spreads fast. We had heard that there was a new restaurant which had opened in Lossiemouth just off the seafront and that it was run by the same owners from the Seafood Cafe in Findhorn, taking advantage of the beautiful, world renowned local shellfish – lobsters, crab and langoustines to name a few. We were guided to our lunchtime table by the Head Waiter, Emilio who quickly apprised us of the specials of the day. Emilio was charming in every way and very knowledgeable about the menu – he told us that he has known the owner/chef (Ian) for some 20 years and was a chef himself at Rosette standard Hotels. The restaurant has about 10 tables serving about 20 or 30 people at any one time and is, therefore, not huge. This is definitely a strong point because it meant the service was always prompt and attentive. The whole atmosphere was about as pleasant as you could wish for – relaxed and not at all too formal. Clientele ranged from a family of four, couples, to a group 'ladies that lunch' so it really caters for all. Over to the food – there are two words to describe the meals as a whole – Absolutely stunning. It is clear that both the Chef and the Head waiter have brought their long experience in quality restaurants and laid it all on the table for our benefit. The meal kicked off with an 'Amuse Bouche' - a mini smoked salmon, Bacon and Caesar Crostini – really delicious!! For starters I took a Frutti di Mer which was a delicious combination of shellfish (mussels, clams,

scallops and a langoustine) with penne pasta and a beautiful deep bisque sauce. My partner had scallops with smoked salmon and black pudding bon bon with a tomato and chorizo chutney. Judging by the ooh's and ah's it was very well received. Indeed, throughout the meal we could hear wow's, ooh's and ah's regularly from time to time. All around us seemed to be very satisfied customers. For mains I had a personal favourite of mine – Monkfish consisting of two portions wrapped in Serrano Ham, accompanied by pea puree and a pulled pork bon bon again served with a delicious chef-made chutney. Every scrap eaten, cleaned plate delivered back - says it all! My partner settled on the Crab Caesar Salad with Smoked Salmon Rosettes and Crispy Bacon. Again a completely cleared plate was a testament to the stunning menu design and execution. For pudding I had an absolutely divine Creme Brulee with perfect crunchy top and cinnamon flavoured 'crème'. My partner took the Ferrero Roche Brownie which was a total glory to taste. Creamy, chocolatey still warm in the middle – just as it should be! My overall impression of the Seafood restaurant and Grill was a beautifully balanced menu, flavour combinations all working in seemingly perfect harmony – an absolute triumph in all respects. I would recommend that you hurry along as quick as you can but remember to book in advance – especially at weekends.

Orienteering the family friendly sport We are lucky in this part of the world to have some of the finest orienteering terrain you could hope for. Coastal forests like Culbin and Roseisle have wonderful wide tracks but are also packed with little hidden pockets of beauty. Finding these hidden wonders is just one of the joys of orienteering and the best thing is, you can keep your map to go back and enjoy it another time too. But back to the family aspect of orienteering. At Moravian Orienteering Club, our membership is predominantly families. We have children who started out toddling around white course (the very easiest courses) now zooming around courses that challenge adults with considerably more experience. We also have adults who were dragged along by their children, acting merely as a taxi service originally, but now compete all over Scotland. It truly is a sport that everyone can enjoy, regardless of your age or current fitness level. What it most curious about this sport though is the bragging rights. At any event you very rarely hear talk of fastest legs or personal bests. No, it’s the epic failures that orienteers like to discuss most. The longer it takes you to find a control, the bigger your bragging rights. If you’ve been wandering around in circles for 30 minutes, almost lost your shoe in a marsh, fell in the mud, realised you were holding your map the wrong way around but persevered until you found the finish, then you’re an orienteering hero. It’s humorous tales of woe you hear shared most often, and we’re very proud of the fact that we like to get value for money from our entry fees! The longer we’re out the better. So if you’d like to enjoy some beautiful local forests, meet some lovely families and have a good sense of humour, you’d be very welcome at an orienteering event. Just bring your sense of humour (and a flask of tea and a slab of cake for when you finish).

The next Moravian Orienteering event: Saturday, 27th April at Millbuies while Inverness Orienteering Club can be found at Belivat on Sunday 7th April. More details at www.moravianorienteering.org/ and www.invoc.org.uk.
