The Editor

It only seems like 5 minutes ago we were all talking about voting and elections and here we are again! So soon - too soon? I wonder what we would do if we didn’t have politicians telling us how things should be and what we should be thinking all the time. The great mantra about listening to the people seems to take a bit of a back seat when it comes to the winning of a Parliamentary Seat! Hey - Ho - here we go again!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS When was the last time you were really, deeply, offended? You see, as I was preparing this message for April and Easter, I couldn't help but think of the cross of Christ and how society has made Easter into one of the least offensive things ever! Who could possibly be offended by chocolate eggs, fluffy bunnies, cute little chicks, and newborn lambs? These are the quintessential images of today's commercial Easter. No-one is going to be offended by receiving a few days off work either, in fact everything about Easter is geared towards things being bright, light and cheerful. And if anyone likes all of those Easter images I'm not going to knock them; I see many people each and every day who could do with a healthy dose of 'happiness!' But as a Christian minister of the gospel, I do wonder how we have managed to take the cross of Christ - which is at the heart of Christianity and Easter and make something which is so offensive appear pleasant and (as much as I hate to use the word) 'nice.' During the time of the Apostles and the early Church, when Christianity

was more counter-cultural than it is in many places today, the cross of Christ was an offensive message to preach about or to believe in. Paul says in 1 Cor 1:23-24 ...we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. People didn't like hearing about the cross. People didn't like hearing about their need to be saved (many people thought they were good enough; morally upright citizens who were 'good' people). But Jesus warned his disciples that there would be people like this, that the message of salvation through Christ alone would never make them popular people! In Mark 13:13, Jesus plainly tells his disciples: 'you will be hated by all for my name's sake.' The Apostle Paul summed up how he and his ministry were received when he states: 'We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.' 1 Cor. 4:13 The truth is, the message of the cross of Christ is offensive because it says we are all in need of God's

forgiveness; that none of us are 'good enough' on our own, by our own efforts, in our own steam, which is why it was necessary for the Son of God to come and die in our place, the just for the unjust, the righteous for the unrighteous. Are you offended by being called 'a sinner?' Some of you will be I'm sure, for 1 Cor. 1:18 tells us: 'For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.' The cross of Christ is certainly offensive to some people, but those who put their trust in Jesus Christ as Saviour and LORD of their lives, are the ones who find true light and life and joy everlasting, through him who not only suffered and died, but also rose again to reign. Christ is risen indeed! So there's no need to be offended by the gospel but there is a need to accept it, to be reconciled to God, and when you do, you'll wonder why on earth you didn't do it years ago!

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

“ Parliament ” Blog I recently had a great time joining with the hugely popular midnight football league, which is a great activity being accessed by young folk right across Moray, keeping them fit and well occupied! I have always been a big football fan and, at the risk of losing a host of votes, I can reveal myself as a longstanding Aberdeen fan! For the many football fans across Moray the football season is reaching its climax. For Aberdeen fans it has been one of the best seasons in recent years and my eldest son and I have managed to get to some really good games. Hopefully more to come!

As this column is within 6 weeks of the May election I am in the unusual situation of not being able to call myself an MP as the House of Commons is now in dissolution pending the result of the election. It is an odd period where, despite the fact that I can and will respond to constituent's queries, I am doing it as a member of the public and no longer as MP. It is a quirk of our democracy that is difficult to explain and which, frankly, causes nothing but havoc for my poor office staff who have to create temporary letterheads, change answer machine messages and other fairly random things that have been the norm for the previous four years and forty something weeks! Whether I continue to write these columns is wholly dependent on whether you, the people of Moray, choose to elect me again. I hope that I will get your support to continue that privilege of representing you in Westminster but whoever you support, please use your vote which is a hard won democratic right that many people in the world regrettably still do not have. UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Is it just me, or has this Winter been pretty unpleasant ? I have to pay pretty close attention to the BBC and Met Office websites as you might imagine in this business. I also did a degree I geography (many years ago) which may/may not, help my forecasting! We have loads of work to get through every Winter, and never enough useable weather. I think this Winter has had an underlying theme. November was very nice. Since then however, it was a procession of North Atlantic low pressure systems, driven by a northerly jetstream. This has left the ground very heavy, with a good deal of water logging. The golf courses will now be aerating the ground to ease the compaction and let in some air, and so do we as Spring beckons. You can use a garden fork on smaller areas perhaps, but a whole garden lawn is best done with a machine. Our aerator (pictured) is heavier than me – by some way – and extracts thousands of cores from your lawn, in no time at all. You could get us to help, and it’s actually cheaper than hiring and doing it yourself. If you are going to rake or scarify the moss out now, you should do so before putting down a Spring feed. Otherwise you’ll traumatise the grass just after spending some time and money to try and bring it on !

FOREST FUN FOR ALL Forests in Moray and Aberdeenshire are really hard to beat, whether walking, cycling, watching wildlife or a picnic with the family, the forests have so much to offer. Visit the coastal woods along the Moray Firth, the wonderful and majestic mountain of Bennachie with its surrounding forest, the peaceful pinewoods of Upper Deeside or the busy city woods round Aberdeen. Where else in the country can you get such variety! Whether you are a walker, mountain biker or horse rider, we have trails for you.

The annual Easter Eggstravaganza is back in 2015 and Forestry Commission Scotland has lined up a packed programme.

Roseisle is a beautiful coastal pinewood lining Burghead Bay and offering the perfect place for a family outing. Why not make a day of it, have a picnic or use one of our fixed barbecue sites while the children have fun in the play area. Relax on the sandy beach or have an energetic walk or cycle ride. As well as shorter circular routes, you can explore all the way to Burghead or College of Roseisle.

Come along on the 5th April, 1 - 4pm for some family fun. Get involved in outdoor activities, discover more about Scotland’s wildlife, hug a husky, go on a bunny hunt, orienteering, mountain bikes and much more. If you would like more information about this event or about Forestry Commission on 01466 794161 or email morayaberdeenshire@forestry.gsi.gov.uk
