Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Now and again I get to go and spend time in our cathedral on the banks of the river in Inverness. Sometimes it is busy and crowded with people and, especially during the summer months, they can be people from all around the world. Sometimes, it can be very quiet; a small evening service with only a few people and sometimes it is nice just to go in and enjoy the stillness and the space; because although it is a very large building, it never feels empty. Holidays are a good time for us to relax and make space for ourselves and some of us will find that space and relaxation in exploring a busy city or in the vibrancy of a holiday resort. Others will prefer places where there are fewer people; maybe even wild and remote places where they find peace and the space to be themselves. Whatever we choose

to do, we know that we all need time for relaxation and refreshment and a chance to recharge our batteries. Jesus was no different, when we read about his life and ministry, we read a lot about the busyness and the crowds of people who followed him; all of them wanting his teaching and his time, often his healing and his help as well. St. Matthew tells us “ Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching at the synagogues, preaching the Good News about the Kingdom, and healing people who had all kinds of disease and sickness.” ( Matt 4 v 23). We are also told that sometimes the crowds who followed Jesus around the Galilee were so large that he had to get into a boat to get some space for himself and his friends. (Mark 4v26).It is no great surprise then, that we also find accounts of Jesus

needing space and time for himself; time away on his own when he could reflect and think and pray. It was an important part of his mission, even in all the busyness of life, to make time for himself. So whatever this holiday season means to us and, however, we choose to spend it, let’s hope and pray that it can be a time to think, to relax and enjoy ourselves and make a bit of space to celebrate the gift of life and all it means to us.

Reader, the Lord Jesus made people ‘whole’ when they accepted that they needed help and that they could not help themselves. They touched Him. Salvation is not complicated. We need to accept that we need help and trust Him to make us ‘whole’ – to heal us from the fatal disease called sin. We need to admit that we are sinners deserving of God’s wrath and that we cannot save ourselves. Only by believing that Jesus Christ’s death on the Cross was for us, and trusting Him, will we be made whole and have peace with God. The Lord Jesus says to you now, ‘Come unto me’.

I held 75 surgeries at locations all across Moray meeting with local people and giving them the opportunity to bring their cases and problems to me, which I have done my best to assist them with. During this recess, I will be once again be getting out on the road and visiting as many places as I can across the area. Moray is vast and varied constituency and I’m aiming to get out to all corners of it this summer and I’m really looking forward to meeting you all. Please feel free if I am in your town or village to stop by and say hello.

I’m delighted that families in Moray are set benefit from almost £1 billion of Scottish Government investment in free childcare. The childcare expansion means that by 2020, all three and four year olds, and eligible two year olds, will be entitled to 1140 hours of free childcare – effectively mirroring the primary school week. The SNP Government is determined to make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up – and our childcare expansion will be of enormous help to families with young children. By almost doubling the availability of free childcare, parents will save hundreds of pounds a month and many will find it easier to return to work or to increase their working hours, as well as creating around 250 new jobs in Moray. This is a significant investment in families in Moray and having met the local project team, I know that the Moray Council’s plans to deliver this increased provision are well under way. I look forward to supporting them in any way I can to ensure we get the delivery right for our young people.

The Raigmore Parking Campaign has been overwhelmed by the positive responses and the continued support we have received since the campaign launched in May 2018. Those who have engaged with the campaign so far have shown that there are many viable solutions to the hospital’s parking woes. However, more information will be needed before NHS Highland can choose the way forward. NHS Highland’s traffic report provides an insight into how staff use the car park and to get a fuller picture we need more information on how patients and hospital visitors use the car park. That is why the Raigmore Parking Campaign is calling on NHS Highland to launch another traffic survey for patients and hospital visitors so we can find a solution that works for all.

Remember that any plants that you have in pots will need regular watering during dry spells, much more so than plants in the ground. It is easy for pots to dry out completely and this can spell the end for the plants. One common problem too is pot plants that sit under the eaves of a house, at the front door for example. Even during periods of rain these may not be getting any water, so either pull them away from the shelter of the eaves or accept that you will need to water them even more regularly.

I

s your garden looking thirsty at the moment? Or maybe you’ve received some heavy summer rainfall where you are and your garden has the opposite problem. It can be feast or famine in the summer for plants, with prolonged dry spells leaving gardens looking tired and parched, and then ensuing periods of rain leading to incredibly vigorous growth. Plants get stressed during periods of dry weather and one of the responses to this is a slowing down in their rate of growth. Remember as well, that your lawn is simply a collection of grass plants, so they get stressed too. It’s a good idea to raise the blades on your mower during periods of dry weather. It’s not good for your lawn to cut it too short at any time of the year, but more so during periods of drought. Brown patches that can develop in lawns during the summer are often nothing to worry about and resolve themselves once they get some rain. If this happens persistently it can help to spike the area with a garden fork and brush in some top-soil and sharp sand to improve drainage. If your lawns develop boggy patches during summer downpours the remedy is the same for the drought-induced dry brown patches mentioned above – topsoil and sharp sand.

Once plants get a dose of rain after a dry period, and especially if the temperatures are still fairly high, things can really take off. Weed seeds that have been lying dormant spring into life, and grass takes off and seems to grow as fast as you can cut it. In these circumstances it may be sufficient to hoe the weeds into the soil cutting their roots and buying you a bit of time to do a more thorough weeding when growth starts slowing from August onwards. Other tasks to be keeping on top of during July and August are keeping ponds topped up with water, and dead-heading flowers (as far as is practical). And don’t forget to sit out and enjoy all your hard work when you can, Most gardens are at their very best in the summer months! To find out more about what I am up to you will find me on Instagram, Facebook, or you can follow my blog which you will find at www.angelhort.com

Vegan Biscotti This crunchy cookie originates from Italy and means “twice baked”. These are wonderful biscotti, and are perfect with a cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients: 1/3 cup Soy Milk ¾ cup Brown Sugar ½ cup Oil Vanilla Extract Orange Zest 2tsp Cornflour 2tsp Baking Powder 1 ½ cups Flour

Method: 1. First mix the brown sugar with the soy milk. 2.Next, add the oil then the vanilla extract and orange zest. 3.Mix in the cornflour, baking powder and flour. 4. Finally, add some chopped dark chocoate, nuts and seeds if desired. Form the biscotti mixture into a flatish rectangle shape and bake in the oven for 40mins. Remove from oven, slide onto a chopping board and allow to cool. Cut the biscotti into slices around 2cm thick. Adult Fiction

Days of Wonder By Keith Stuart Tom, single father to Hannah, is the manager of a tiny local theatre. On the same day each year, he and its colourful cast of part-time actors have staged a fantastical production just for his little girl, a moment of magic to make her childhood unforgettable. The very first production followed Hannah's diagnosis with a heart condition that both of them know will end her life early. And now, with Hannah a funny, tough girl of fifteen on the brink of adulthood, that time is coming.

Adult Non-Fiction

Ask An Astronaut By Tim Peake

This Is What Happened By Mick Herron

Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk. One woman, one chance to be a hero: the trick is to stay alive.

Adult Non-Fiction

The French Revolution By Stephen Clarke

Tim’s personal guide to life in space, based on his historic Principia mission, and the thousands of questions he has been asked since his return to Earth. From training to launch, from his historic spacewalk to re-entry, he reveals for readers of all ages the cutting-edge science behind his ground-breaking experiments, and the wonders of day-to-day life on board the International Space Station.

Junior Fiction

The Last Chance Hotel By Nikki Thornton Seth is the oppressed kitchen boy at the remote Last Chance Hotel, owned by the nasty Bunn family. His only friend is his black cat, Nightshade. But when a strange gathering of magicians arrives for dinner, kindly Dr Thallomius is poisoned by Seth's special dessert. A locked-room murder investigation ensues - and Seth is the main suspect. The funny thing is, he's innocent. Can he solve the mystery and clear his name, especially when magic's afoot?

Legend has it that, in a few busy weeks in July 1789, a despotic king, his freeloading wife, and a horde of over-privileged aristocrats, were displaced and then humanely dispatched. In the ensuing years, we are told, France was heroically transformed into an idyll of Liberte, Egalite and Fraternite. In fact, as Stephen Clarke, author of 1000 Years of Annoying the French, argues in his informative and eye-opening account of the French Revolution, almost all of this is completely untrue. Junior Non-Fiction

What are course grasses ? They are “wild” grasses, as opposed to “lawn” grasses, typically pale in colour, a thicker, course looking leaf, and often seem to grow in clumps in the lawn. They are seeded by other course grasses already in the lawn, or can be blown in from neighbouring land, or even deposited in bird droppings. They were prevalent this spring as lawn grasses were slow to start growing because May and June saw drought conditions. Course grasses tend to tolerate and keep growing in these conditions, whereas lawn grasses don’t, so the wild stuff seems to dominate. You can help prevent them spreading by mowing regularly. Also, if you give the lawn a quick swish with a spring rake prior to mowing, you will lift the long stems, which can then be mown off before they produce seed.

They are not weeds, so a lawn weedkiller wont clear them. If there are just a few clumps, you can dig out a square of turf (like a carpet tile) and put it in the bin. You can replace with a patch of turf, or seed with lawn grass. If there is a major infestation, that’s not realistic, and you might just have to get used to it, unless you are prepared to replace the lawn with a new one. We do a Lawn Makeover which is much cheaper than re-turfing see www.greenthumb.co.uk. It involves completely killing the existing lawn with a total herbicide, then re-seeding and top-dressing with a clean mix of new lawn grasses. Get in touch if you would like a free estimate.

There is a good factsheet provided by the Royal Horticultural Society. If you search for www.rhs/coursegrasses, it should take you straight there.
