A recent family get together made me realise how important families are. People close to you who are loyal and understanding is something we take for granted. Our new Businesses in Our Community section is aimed to help and support local business. Why would we? Because being loyal and not taking them for granted will enable local business to support and employ our families and communities for years to come. PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS “He who has ears, let him hear” My eldest daughter is quickly turning into a seasoned teenager! She looks out at the world and tells me her aspirations and dreams. What will it take to get her attention, helping her to understand what is beneficial for her life? People sometimes have to explain things we don’t often want to hear. For my daughter, the joys of teenage freedom were recently given a reality check when faced with having to take injections as part of a health programme to prevent cervical cancer. It’s been a struggle to get her to think beyond a swift jab in the arm to understand the life-long purpose of the injections. Teachers, nurses and others have joined together to explain the need, but her thoughts are more focused on what she thinks she needs, which doesn’t include a sharp needle in the arm. She would readily abandon the injections if those entrusted with her care, and who have her best interests at heart, did not have the perseverance to try, try and try again. I have wondered how she and other girls would react if they met with a sufferer or a relative of someone who

had suffered from cervical cancer. Perhaps that meeting might break though some of her objections sufficient to guide her to a place of understanding and acceptance. Every human being will reflect conscientiously on times when a message of good intention was met with rejection. Can you remember how that feels? For the recipient, the message takes on a deeper meaning at the point of finally understanding the intentions of the message giver. Importantly, the message giver doesn’t give up, hoping that the message will reach its intended destination. That’s why I appreciate the motives behind the teaching Jesus gives to those who come to listen. He doesn’t give up. Like a farmer sowing his crops, Jesus keeps on delivering His message, sowing the seeds of truth, hoping that they will take root and grow. So often He finished with these seemingly, strange words to those prepared to receive and understand that message of truth: “He who has ears, let him hear.” Reluctance, offence, scepticism and anxiety reflect just a few characteristics stirring in the hearts

and minds of those listening to Jesus. The message gets personal. Some reject it. To some it becomes meaningful. Some begin to hear the truth and gradually understand the need of Christ in their lives. In the same way my daughter is encouraged to come round to understanding what is in her best interests, barriers to Christ’s message of salvation need to be broken down. An instant fix certainly wasn’t my experience. My cautious approach emulates my daughter’s predicament, but Christ never gave up on me. I finally turned to listen, understand and accept. Today, we can hear the same message from the same messenger. Be encouraged to pick up a bible or booklet that conveys Jesus’ words, and listen to the heart of His message – may He speak to you personally. May He bring a deeper meaning of your need of Him. He who has ears, let him hear.

Parliament Blog Tattie Scones! That was the order of the day at Piping Hot Forres where I went head-to-head with Angus Robertson MP to make the traditional tattie treats with a twist ...and the result of the head-to-head‌ we were both beaten by the talented Mary Greer, who works at Mackenzie Cruickshank, who made a haggis and neeps tattie scone called the ‘Rabbie’! Huge congratulations to the organisers of Piping Hot Forres for an amazing event, which pulled in thousands of visitors to hear the incredible sound of thousands of pipers. Well done! With only a few weeks to go until the Independence Referendum on 18 September it will be of no surprise to folk that this is the main thing filling my time! It is a frequent topic of conversation in the street, on buses and trains, amongst friends and in workplaces. The referendum debate has clearly engaged people in Scotland’s political future more than any other political campaign in recent times, which I believe is very positive for engagement between politicians like myself and the people we represent. If you have questions to ask then don’t hesitate to get in touch with me either by email to angus.robertson.mp@parliament.uk or by post to 9 Wards Road, Elgin, IV30 1NL.

So as you may imagine we are often awash in soapy water and covered in fluff... Although we make many light and floaty scarves, hats, wall hangings and much, much more, we don't often find ourselves called on to make really large work. However, just recently, we were commissioned to make a large felted landscape to decorate three of the >V ÕÃÌ VÊ«> i ÃÊ ÊÌ iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >viÊ iÀiÊ>ÌÊ } iÊ Steading. / iÊ" ÛiÊ/ÀiiÊ >`ÊÀiµÕiÃÌi`Ê>Ê i>Ì iÀÞÊ > `ÃV>«iÊqÊ something that really embodied the essence of the Highlands of Scotland. "The best fun

EVER!!"

Review Sunday 6th July

Looking for a fun-filled family night out? Then Pinz is the answer! Under new management, there is definitely a new vibe. We were greeted with a smile and decided to eat first and were directed to the restaurant and bar, aptly named "The Gutter Bar & Grill", which was spacious and vibrant with a great buzz. The bar was well stocked and the menu was packed with all the favourites to suit all tastes. The boys had Chicken Nuggets and Hamburger from the Kids Menu, which includes all their favourites and comes with chips or smiley faces (beans optional) and a glass of squash. Both were generous portions and their empty plates were testament to the quality. Tamsyn chose the Chicken Fillets and I had the Haddock, both were served with a portion of chips and a side salad. Everything was superbly cooked and enough to leave us totally satisfied. The staff were professional and friendly throughout, catering to our every need without being imposing. With no room for desert (although there were some tempting choices) we headed for the bowling area, swapped our shoes, and headed for our lane. A great time was had by all in pursuit of that elusive 'strike' I won, of course! Pinz is so much more than a bowling alley. It is a great place to eat and drink with friends and family. The bar has wall mounted screens for sport lovers as well as pool tables and dart boards. There is a large area dedicated to arcade games and an air hockey table and let us not forget “Lunar Land", a large soft play area perfect for letting the kids loose. The venue also caters for children’s parties and conferences and weather permitting, you can ride the rodeo bull or sheep or attempt the bungee run - if you dare. All in all a great outing in a fun atmosphere for all ages.

Getting into the Christmas Spirit There are few things more magical than the atmosphere of the traditional Christmas market, generally held across European cities in November and December. Every year more and more visitors are enjoying the unique festive charms of Christmas markets in German cities such as Cologne, Nuremberg and Dresden as well as in other European cities such as Vienna, Bruges and Prague. The twinkling scenes of festively decorated plazas with their enchanting market stalls and glittering Christmas trees set against the backdrop of beautiful historic buildings, let visitors relive the magic of yesteryear. The smell of hot mulled wine and roasted chestnuts fills the air. Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is one of the biggest and most famous of the Christmas markets. Nearly 200 festive wooden stalls adorn the Old Town square from the beginning of Advent. Over 2 million visitors from all round the world enjoy the candlelit stalls in this beautiful Bavarian city. There are 21 Christmas markets in Vienna. The Advent Market is in front of the fabulous Schonbrunn Palace where visitors can buy traditional tree decorations, handmade gifts and a large selection of culinary delicacies. There is also the Christmas Village in Maria Theresien Platz with 50 stands with a wide range of goods and a choir is often to be heard.

Italy also boasts Christmas Markets - based in the delightful town of Arco, a short distance from Lake Garda's northern shore, and a gateway to the majestic Dolomite mountains beyond, this festive break includes visits to the wonderful Christmas Markets at Merano and Bolzano, and offers opportunities, on optional excursions, to visit incomparable Venice and Romeo and Juliet's Verona. If you are looking for an extra special treat for children or grandchildren what could be more exciting than a trip to Lapland. This really is a once in a lifetime experience – seeing Father Christmas in his secret hideaway deep in the pine trees. It is the stuff that dreams are made of and you can see it on the faces of young and old alike. A trip on a skidoo or in a sleigh pulled by reindeer – the excitement can all be fitted into a day trip – a long and busy day but it is possible! Alternatively a few days provides a more relaxed atmosphere giving you more time to try out the winter activities

In Prague the markets takes place in Wenceslas Square and in Old Town Square. Huge Christmas Trees sparkle, 150 wooden stalls many selling traditional crafts and the sound of Christmas concerts taking place all add to the magical atmosphere.

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Summer Lawn Renovation and Re-seeding June – September is the best time in Scotland to consider clearing out your old lawn, which might well be choked with old thatch and moss, and re-stocking with fresh seed. You need a ground temperature of 9C and regular watering to get good germination of new seed. It’s not expensive and can be a very successful way of rejuvenating a tired, old lawn, certainly at a fraction of the price of re-turfing. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch and moss as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper. 3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting. 4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrients to assist existing grass, promote good germination from the seed, and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.
