I was recently on the receiving end of a decision that I didn't agree with (I think you know the one I mean). Life can be full of disappointment when things don’t seem to go our way and how we respond to that says much more about us than which side of the argument we are on. The challenge I set myself is to keep the argument in perspective and try remember that our relations with actual people is the important thing. CS Lewis said the following: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit...”

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Success Round about now many young people are eagerly waiting - a text message, an email or an envelope through the letter box. The arrival of exam results will be a measure of success and a major factor in the year or years ahead. Comparisons will be made - did I do better than I expected? Did I do better than some of my peers? Did I do as well as my teachers or parents believed I should? Perhaps most significantly - is it enough to take me to the next stage of my career? Success can be difficult to gauge; one person may be satisfied with a set of results - while their friend with very similar ones might just miss a college place and be totally disappointed. That can happen in a variety of life situations. Some athletes are over the moon just getting to Rio; others will consider it a failure if they don’t win gold. As Chris Coleman, the Welsh football team manager said earlier this summer - ‘the bigger countries have to make the quarter-finals, semifinals and final; we just have to perform for us.’ American comedian
George Burns once said - I’d rather be a failure at something I enjoyed than a success at something I hated. Now while that sounds like a good bit of advice - pursuing only what you truly enjoy, if we live only for personal enjoyment and satisfaction, we’ve got a pretty restricted attitude to life. Put that another way, if all you do is ‘perform for you’, if all your goals are purely and exclusively personal, will that bring real satisfaction? Will that strategy mean ultimate success? Jesus was once approached by a man who clearly wanted a simple set of goals for his life. How do I get there? That was his question. Typically Jesus returned the question to him - well what do you think; what have you learned as you grew and were taught? The man answered: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, `Love your neighbour as yourself.” "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." (Luke 10:27-29) According to Jesus this is the greatest goal any person can have and one

that will lead to the greatest happiness and peace of mind. But notice how little emphasis there is on me and my and mine. It’s all about loving and pleasing and helping others. Of even greater significance is this - Jesus did not simply say it; he did not simply set the agenda or issue the challenge. He lived it too. One of his most thankful followers, Paul, who began ‘in opposition’ said ‘the life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20). Paul then invites us to ‘be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:1-3). So for all of us trying so hard to find success for ourselves, there is another way of living and that is by asking God to let us live in and by the success Jesus achieved - a success He is delighted to share with others.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES At this time of year there’s not a week that goes by that there isn’t a Highland Games, a village fete or local festival that is celebrated in communities the length and breadth of Moray. Like many folk, I will be getting along to a few of these events both for personal enjoyment and as an opportunity to meet constituents and catch up with folk. The one thing that all of these events have in common is the dedication and commitment of volunteers who give up their time to make them the successes that they are. From the local cadets, scouts and other youth organisations who are often helping with car parking to the volunteers on charity stalls to the community council member in the pinny behind the BBQ and everyone else who chips in - a huge well done. Our communities are thriving because of these efforts to put on a great show for locals and visitors alike and which give each of our communities an event that is unique to them!
Since I wrote my last blog, I’ve been kept busy with summer recess and holding surgeries across Moray. I’ve also attended the official opening of the Scottish Parliament. Each MSP was invited to select a local hero to attend the opening and after a public search, I selected Sam Simpson from Newmill near Keith to represent Moray. Sam was nominated for helping to raise over £100,000 for charity following her young daughter’s cancer diagnosis. It was a real privilege to have Sam and her family at the official opening of the Parliament. She stood out to me as a local hero representing the best of Moray – a great community spirit, warm generosity and unsung heroes who go out of their way to help others even when they have their own challenges to face. It’s absolutely right that the people of Scotland were at the heart of the opening as we to look to the next five years.

Nairn Book and Arts Festival - back for its 13th year! The UK’s favourite travel writer, Simon Calder opens a packed programme of author readings, music, poetry, art and drama. With readings by crime writers Denise Mina and Lisa Ballantye, historian Trevor Royle, playwright and author Alan Bisset among many others - you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the best known traditional musicians in Scotland take the stage - Charlie McKerron, Brian Ó hEadhra, Sandy Brechinand Findlay Napier, to name a few. Spanish flavour is brought to the Festival by Alba Flamenca. Poets John Glenday and BBC Slam Champion Sophia Walker appear at the Little Theatre and House of Automata presents Phantasmagoria as part of a stunning Son et Lumiere night at Nairn Museum. Families will love our Kids Day - entertainment from parkour to storytelling will suit all ages and all for free! Art lovers - our Open Exhibition has something for everyone. There are talks by incredible micro artist Graham Short and Louise Scullion, part of contemporary art duo Dalziel + Scullion.
