PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Jesus is worth giving up everything else for... Some Scots will be disappointed that this St. Andrew’s Day is not the first one being celebrated in a new, independent Scotland. Others will be glad that this St. Andrew’s Day, as before, is being celebrated in a Scotland that remains part of the Union. In my far-flung schooldays it was a public holiday and, therefore, a great reason to celebrate as far as me and my holiday-loving cronies were concerned! Who cared whether it was an odd time of year for a holiday? A day off school made us Andrew fans, whatever he and his day were all about! Older and wiser, I grew up taking more interest in cultural things and I must have heard the stories about how St. Andrews in Fife got named and how some of the great man’s bones had once arrived there and how some of them were maybe still lying in Edinburgh and about how he’d been crucified on an X-shaped cross so as to be slightly different from Jesus, whom he felt unworthy to imitate and about how the Picts claimed to have seen a cloud formation as a white cross against a blue sky the day before a great battlevictory, hence our adoption of the

symbol on the flag to this day. I have no idea how much truth there is in any of these legends, but they’re interesting old stories anyway! What I definitely do believe is the Bible’s account of Andrew, the man who became one of Jesus’ twelve disciples long before any of these other tales got started. He only gets mentioned about twelve times in the Gospel stories, most of which are fairly minor references like when the twelve disciples get listed by name. But the other references are much more significant. Once we find him and three others asking Jesus theological questions (Mark 13:3) – it’s always good to want to know more about the Bible and about the things of God. Once is the story of how Andrew came to be a disciple of Jesus - intrigued by Jesus’ character and teaching (John 1:39) he begins to follow him around, eventually giving up his fishing to be a full-time helper and learner and one of Jesus’ closest companions. He effectively reminds us that Jesus is worth giving up everything else for and how those who do so are never the losers - either in this life or the next. But, perhaps, his loveliest legacy is the

three times we find him bringing other people to Jesus. In John 1:41 it’s his brother Peter whom he tells, ‘We have found the Messiah’. In John 6:8 it’s Andrew who finds the boy with the five loaves and two fishes and brings him to Jesus, which results in the miracle we know as ‘The Feeding of the 5000’. And in John 12:22, when some travelling Greeks say, ‘we would like to see Jesus’, it’s Andrew who brings them to meet the Master. Like Andrew, we never know true meaning and purpose in life until we find Jesus, the Messiah and come to know Him as our own Lord and Saviour. And, like Andrew, our calling doesn’t stop there, but continues with the wonderful privilege of helping others to come to meet and know Jesus too. If this little article can help anybody at all to begin to make the greatest of all discoveries, I’ll be thrilled and humbled to be a little bit of an Andrew as well and will be thankful to God again for using this obscure Middle Eastern fisherman in such a prominent way in Scotland’s national identity. After an incredible year for Scotland we are now approaching Christmas and perhaps a bit of respite for folks from politics and a bit of family time. That is, of course, after the works nights out, the Christmas shopping and the battle for the last turkey! I am looking forward to a bit of quiet reflection on the year and to catching up with friends and family. As always, as we approach Christmas, I will take the opportunity to recognise the work of the many people who will still be working at Christmas whether they are elsewhere in the world in the armed forces, the oil industry or another job that takes people a distance away or whether they are in the emergency services and medical professions here in Moray. There are also the very many people who are working in retail and in hospitality throughout the Christmas period who will be providing a service to others who are fortunate to have the time off. Very best wishes of the season to you all.

At this time of year I am very much looking forward to some quality family time and, in particular the chance to see my children taking part in the traditional school Christmas activities before the Christmas break itself. Looking forward to 2015 we will undoubtedly see some really exciting times in Scotland on the back of our referendum year and the huge enthusiasm for positive change that it has created in our country. Going around Moray I have never seen so many people being so engaged with politics and the big issues affecting us - not just to talk about it but to actively want to help change things in whatever way they can. There is little sign of that enthusiasm abating, which is fantastic and really sets the scene for the coming year.

A Chef with Savoir Faire When I was told Elgin was home to a European and French Restaurant with a chef who had previously worked at the Savoy I was dubious: surely this is something I, as a self-confessed foodie, would know. Lido European and French Restaurant had somehow managed to escape my radar so I decided to rectify the situation the same evening. I invited my chef friend, along with my visiting Australian parents. We entered the modern restaurant and were warmly welcomed by the charming hostess who was finely attuned to the needs of her customers, even though it was a busy night. We were seated at a table that felt intimate, contrasting to the open and spacious feel of the restaurant on the whole. Shortly after arrival we were presented with toasted bread to dip into a pesto oil or balsamic and olive oil. For starters I had the Garlic King Prawns in coriander, chilli and garlic butter. The flavoursome oil, moist prawns and crunch of the crostini gave a wonderful contrast of textures. All starters were accompanied by a creamy dressed salad. The dressing had a tang and the subtle balance of flavours allowed the different leaves of the salad to remain distinguishable. We were all surprised by the ample portion sizes, expecting the modern minuscule meals that are the fashion. My Australian father, a connoisseur of calamari in his native land said the breaded calamari was some of the best he had ever eaten. My mother enjoyed the tang of the sauce vierge and said her sea bass was cooked beautifuly with a crisp skin. My chef friend chose the duck liver orange pate which he said was smooth and flavoursome. He found the fig marmalade to be a fantastic and exciting compliment to the dish. For mains my friend continued with the Pork Medallions for his main which he described as succulent, unadulterated and delicious. My father then chose another of his firm favourites, Lamb Shanks which he described as beautiful. I literally witnessed it falling off the bone. My mother chose the Grilled Salmon and King Prawn Skewers and although she loved it all, the mediterranean vegetables that topped the cous cous was her highlight. I treated myself to the Sirloin Steak and chose the delicious, creamy béarnaise over the peppercorn sauce, The steak was cooked to my perception of perfection: medium-rare, tender and with the lovely charcoal flavour I can never emulate at home. Although we were all full we tapped into our second "sweet tummy" to enable us to share a Creme Brulee and Tarte Aux Pommes, both desserts were superb and my mum whose favourite is Creme Brulee said it was to die for. I was delighted to have had a stunning meal and to have found a treasure hidden in plain sight.
