The Editor

I was reminded recently about the value of life. Life is indeed precious and when we know someone who dies the reality of death can hit us hard. People say that death and taxes are the two things that we can rely on without fear of contradiction! We cannot understimate the pain and sadness associated with death but if it prompts us to live for the day and live life to the full then that is no bad thing. We should be joining that group or club that we have been thinking about. Let’s not delay - engage with our community and let’s go to that club/group!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS The Lord God Almighty loves you! It’s probably fair to say that February isn’t a lot of people’s favourite month of the year. The New Year celebrations of January are all but a distant memory and yet the Easter holidays are still a good way off in the future. The weather is often bitterly cold and the nights are still long, yet slap bang in the middle of the month lies February’s redeeming feature - Valentine’s Day. A day of loooove! Well, actually, it’s a period of intense consumerist marketing, but on the whole people don’t mind because it often cheers up an otherwise dreary winter month with a bit of panache. That is of course… as long as you have a valentine with which to share the day! There are many people for whom Valentine’s Day is little more than a painful reminder of their singleness and for some, it can really play havoc with their self-esteem or self-worth. Young people especially, can hit the dizzying age of 16 and think, ‘why doesn’t anyone find me attractive’, or ‘why can’t I get a boyfriend?’ Can I please emphasise that there is nothing wrong with being single! The only perfect

example of humanity the world has ever known - Jesus Christ, God Incarnate was single. As was the Apostle Paul. Indeed, there have been many highly successful people who never found romantic love or married but went on to accomplish great things and live rich and full lives. People such as Jane Austin, Leonardo Da Vinci, Queen Elizabeth I, Isaac Newton and Florence Nightingale, to name but a few. This is the one of the dangers of seeking our self-worth from the attentions or affections of other people. The Bible tells us that God created mankind in His image (that is, to have a will, make decisions, have the ability to reason and be responsible for our actions) and that our worth, as well as the worth of every person who has ever lived, comes not from who they are nationally, or through what they achieve in life (their ability), but because God has created them with an inherent worth. You are valuable to God! He made you to live in relationship with Himself so that you can know that His love for you is everlasting. As John 3:16 so famously states: For God so loved the world, that he gave

his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. He loved you enough to give you life through natural birth and He loved you enough to die for your sins to give you new birth: to be born again of the Spirit of God. No wonder the Psalmist says: Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! (Ps.118:29) So, whether you are single or dating, married, widowed or divorced, God loves you! And your importance and worth to Him can be seen in His willingness to die in your place (and mine) on the cross, taking away our sins, making it possible for us to have a living relationship with Him, as our Father, Saviour and Comforter. So, you’ve not got a rose, a card or a box of over-priced chocolates off anyone this year? So what! The Lord God Almighty loves you! And His love for you is perfect; He’ll never leave you nor forsake you – it’s an unconditional love that will last for all eternity; all you need to do is accept it. Rev. Dr J. P. It’s been a lively month at home between a new member of the household in the shape of Labradoodle pup, Marnie and a house move as well. It was only a few miles within Moray rather than end to end of the country but with it being well over ten years since my last house move I’d forgotten just how much time all the packing and unpacking takes. Gradually settling into the new house and working through all the people and organisations I need to change address details with! Sympathies to anyone else going through a move as well for all the faffy bits but it’s worth it when it all comes together and the boxes are emptied! Angus Robertson MP

Moray is steeped in history, culture and tradition and there is no greater reminder of this than the annual Burning of the Clavie in Burghead to mark the New Year. The unique fire festival held on the 11 January, an ancient tradition that sees a burning barrel of staves carried around the village, is always a spectacular event and this year was certainly no different. It’s incredible to think that once the clavie reaches its final destination on Doorie Hill that it can be seen from as far as Caithness and Sutherland. I was very proud to carry a piece of the clavie with me when I was first sworn into Parliament as Moray’s MSP in 2006, serving as a reminder of Moray’s unique traditions and culture. Possession of a piece of the clavie is said to bring good luck for the year ahead and I hope that 2016 is a glowing one for Brochers and people across Moray. Richard Lochhead MSP

GreenThumb

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Has All this Winter’s Rain Turned Your Lawn into Moss? You’re not the only one. Moss thrives in cool, damp, shady conditions. We have the ideal climate. If you apply an autumn/winter feed from the garden centre (or GreenThumb), it will likely contain iron, a long established moss control element. Iron dehydrates the existing moss growth, often turning it black as it dies back. In our climate that’s usually not enough on it’s own, and most lawns also need scarified to remove this material, and re-growth of yet more new moss, either by raking, or with a machine. It’s best done either side of Christmas. At any rate, it should be done before Spring, when the grass starts growing again. It’s a pretty traumatic procedure for the grass to tolerate, and not something you want to inflict on any fragile new growth just starting up.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to

I’ve put in a picture here of the sort of machines we

Tannara

Dubbed “One of Scotland’s brightest new up and coming bands” by organisers of the Stonehaven Folk Festival, Tannara will play The Drouthy Cobbler in Elgin for the first time on the 26th of February. Owen (Guitar/Vocals), Becca (Clarsach), Cameron (Fiddle/Vocals) and Joseph (Accordion) hail from Achiltibuie, Fort Augustus, Orkney & Stonehaven. Teuchters at heart, their music stems from a collective love of playing trad music – mostly from Scotland and some self-penned. Their intricate arrangements are delivered with a complete focus on collective sound and delivering total joy. Formed as recently as late 2014, the members of the group initially intended Tannara as an outlet for their own compositions. Over the intervening months their focus has widened to bring in their varied individual musical experiences. The resulting music has been enjoyed by a wide range of appreciative audiences including at the Celtic Connections Festival, Stonehaven Folk Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Summer Isles Festival, and Nordland Festival, as well as a host of venues and folk clubs the length and breadth of the land.

Patrick Monahan

THE

As well as the monthly Drouthy Cobbler Comedy Club (24th Feb at 7.30pm, £12), March will see the return of Patrick Monahan and his new solo show “The Disco Years”. The hilarious comedian is in Elgin for 2 nights this time, the 25th and 26th of March. This years show sees him turn his animated storytelling towards the disco era which coincided with his parents meeting and his subsequent birth. Tackling subjects including his Irish-Iranian heritage, animal sacrifice and even Dundee, it is almost impossible not to like him. Unbridled excitement, enthusiasm and exuberance are unavoidably infectious. An incredibly charming performer, it is rare to find an act who can keep such a high level of commitment for so long. Indeed, you will find it hard to stop yourself from joining in with his (surprisingly good) dance moves.

Tickets for all events are available at www.thedrouthycobbler.co.uk and at the bar.

The Newton Hotel and Highland Conference Centre

W NAIRN W Kevin Staines, General Manager of The Newton Hotel in Nairn, talked recently about some of the typical type of questions that are put to them by couples planning their wedding. The Newton has a long standing reputation for providing the very best in a wedding venue and is keen to continue and build upon this reputation in the future.

5. Our budgets are modest and we are planning an intimate wedding with just a few family and friends. Can you accommodate smaller parties, too, or do we need to fill the whole hotel? We cater from 2-200 guests, in a variety of event rooms. Its your day, we just help make it go smoothly.

1. We got engaged at Christmas and haven’t even begun to start thinking about organising our wedding. We’ve enjoyed the weddings we’ve been to at The Newton Hotel and would like to find out more about you – what is the first thing we should do? Come and see us! Make an appointment with Janet, and pop in for a showround, sample the wonderful, friendly atmosphere that we have to offer

6. We’d love to have a variety of locations for our wedding photos, both inside and outside – if the Highland weather is kind. What would you suggest? Wood panelled corridors, black and white floors, our chapel, in front of our fountain, our original staircase entrance, a group shot with the photographer hanging out of a bedroom window looking down to you and your guests! The beach!! Inside and out, the newton offers a wide range of beautiful photo opportunities.

2. Can you help us with recommendations for wedding bands, florists, photographers and someone to make our cake? We’re really not sure where to start! Absolutely, we are delighted to give you some advice in terms of suppliers that regularly appear at the Newton, but remember, this is YOUR day, so should you already have ideas for suppliers, share them with us and we’ll help

7. Still thinking of photographs – we’d really like for your Highland cows to appear in some of our wedding photos – can that be arranged? “Haggis & neeps” are very photogenic and friendly, and would be happy to help! Just remember your wellies!

3. We don’t have a church connection so would like to get married at the hotel. What options are available to at The Newton? Our fabulous chapel, our idyllic gardens, or our Cawdor or Brodie suites offer a variety of options for your religious, civil, humanist, pagan ceremony.

8. We’d really like to arrive at our wedding in style – do you have any suggestions that would help our wedding stand out from the crowd? From helicopter to horse and cart, its YOUR wedding, make it your style. What about a champagne bar in the car-park on the back of a vintage car We can do that!

4. We are quite particular about the food and wines that will be served at our wedding. Can we come and taste the dishes before we decide? A complimentary meal tasting is included in your booking with us, and it matters to us that you are confident and delighted in the food that will be served to those joining you for your wedding. Wines can be sampled at your taster meal, or at a preferred time

9. One of our guests has mobility issues and can’t manage stairs. Is everything easily accessible for a wheelchair? All of our event rooms are on the ground floor, with a lift to all floors with wheelchair accessible bedrooms available as well. A ramp gives entry to the front door of the hotel. For any further details or information about using the Newton as a wedding venue please phone Kevin on 01667 459000.
