By now you are probably reading SpotLight sitting in your favourite chair (or sofa or bed) having over indulged in food, wine, tv and relatives. The period inbetween Christmas and New Year is a time to take a breather before we launch ourselves into the New Year celebrations. The temptation to overindulge again is indeed strong and only the truly strong will succeed!! But help is at hand, surely? January is the season of fitness classes and weight loss programmes where we reorganise our bodies into something resembling our former self - Good luck and Have a great 2016!!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS Where are you going? Golfing superstar Tiger Woods was quoted as saying he ‘has nothing to look forward to’. Of course (or should that be off course?) his personal life is turbulent and ‘on course’ he has been dogged by a succession of injuries that seem to threaten his continuing to play golf at the highest level. He is someone who has earned $1.5 billion playing golf, is only 40 years old and is still highly sought after by golf tournament organizers worldwide, yet, it would appear, he doesn’t know where his life is going, has no timetable for recovery and presumably no alternative career or activity he wishes to pursue. His life is golf - and without that we must guess he sees little clear purpose or direction. I’m sure it’s not just Tiger who feels that way. Many of us become preoccupied with the successes we hope to achieve, the pleasures we hope to enjoy and the possessions we hope to acquire. Events and
experiences become our milestones; we try to build memories we hope will provide us with meaning to our later lives. Sometimes we may stop and ask the question - what’s it all about? We all have these same preoccupations - a desire to be remembered for the good we have done and to experience as much of this amazing world’s attractions as we can. But, as a follower of Jesus, I am encouraged by Him to look beyond myself and beyond this world. He invites anyone who is ready to listen to set their minds on things above and not on earthly things. He said, ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ (Matthew 6:19-21)

He did not mean we should abandon goals, stop pursuing careers and become like hermits hiding away from the world and thinking of nothing but moving on to the next world. To do that would rob us of real purpose in living and real joy in life’s experiences. What Jesus encourages in us is this; that our lives would be centered on Him, that our goals and our successes would be guided by His priorities. In other words that we would put Him first. Now if that sounds like abandoning self (giving up just doing what I want to do) that’s because it is. But it comes with the greatest benefit; Jesus says that if our aims - what we are looking forward to - is a fuller relationship with Him then we will always have something to look forward to. Something that cannot be threatened, lost or destroyed. And we will most certainly know where our lives are going. Rev. Colin Morison Forres & Elgin Free Church

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES A Happy 2016 to everyone! It looks to be an interesting year ahead. It is once again an election year, which has been the case almost every year in recent times! This time round it’s the Scottish Parliament elections and like many politicians at all levels I will be out knocking doors in support of my Moray colleague Richard Lochhead MSP. I have said in the past it is always an enjoyable experience. Our regular campaigning gets us out and about all over Moray, speaking to the people who have elected us in their own communities and that is hugely important in keeping on top of the issues that affect people in Moray on a day-to-day basis, which it can be all to easy to become detached from when you travel away to parliament every week. Keep an eye out for us doing the rounds and keep us informed when you see us!
Let me start by saying a very Happy New Year to you and yours! I hope you had an enjoyable festive period and you’ve now recovered. New Year resolutions are easily made and even more easily broken. But one resolution I think we can all make quite easily is to continue to waste less and recycle more. Homes across Moray, including my own, will be left with Christmas cards, trees, cardboard boxes, all ready to be disposed of. Every year we are finding better ways of stopping waste going to landfill and being ever more responsible for the wider environment. Moray folk continue to lead the way in Scotland in recycling and I hope that people will do their bit to keep up that fantastic record and dispose of waste from Christmas and New Year as responsibly as possible.

What Can We Possibly be Usefully Doing in January?
and thins-out the root zone
With nothing much growing, and the ground
control in this part of the world ! You can do
sometimes pretty solid, often frosty. It’s when we take
this with a garden fork too, but not as
our heavy American golf course aerators out and
effectively obviously as with a machine which
about to aerate lawns. We do hollow-core tining,
actually removes a core of material. I’ve
which becomes compacted and choked over time. This is mainly about moss
included a picture of our aerator, a formidable piece of kit, and not available in B&Q or at your local garden centre! Just a reminder; the leaves are all off now, and if they are still in drifts on your grass, it’s a very good idea to lift them. Several weeks without light and air under a pile of leaves is likely to kill/seriously damage a patch of grass. For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £11.25 per mth, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Contact Alastair or Fiona for a FREE LAWN ANALYSIS on 01667 460012, or email us at:
inverness@greenthumb.co.uk where the machine removes thousands of plugs from the ground. Golf courses are doing this too at this time not surprisingly. Aerating the ground is multi-beneficial as it allows air into the ground, helps with drainage,

Recovery happens Arrows is the new drug and alcohol support service in Moray. Run by Quarriers, Arrows supports adults with problematic substance use, offering advice, information and treatment to support individuals in their recovery. Who is the Service for? Arrows is a service for anyone worried about alcohol and drug use, whether their own or a loved one’s. Substance use problems can develop over time, and it is important for individuals to recognise where drugs or alcohol are having an impact on their wellbeing, relationships or lifestyle. Support is available to anyone with concerns, no matter how small. At times it’s the friends, family or other people around an individual who may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved ones.
What support is available? Arrows offers a listening ear and provides advice and information for people facing addiction issues. Our one-to-one and peer group support helps to build motivation, set goals and manage addictions using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approaches and Motivational Interviewing.
How do I access support? You can drop into our Elgin office during opening hours. We are located near the end of the High Street, with both a High Street entrance and side door entrance on Kilmolymock Close. Alternatively, you can call, text or email and we can arrange to meet with you at a convenient time and location to discuss support options.
Will I be anonymous? You can contact the service anonymously to speak to someone, and disclose your name or information on your own terms. We will only keep or share information about you with your consent and your on-going support will be agreed in partnership with you. We do have a duty to share information where we have concerns that you or an individual are at risk of harm.
Will you involve my family or friends? We recognise the benefits of including family members and loved ones in accessing support and on-going recovery. We can discuss this with you should you wish to include a family member or friend, or you yourself wish to be included as a supportive factor in a loved one’s recovery.

INNES HOUSE
Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings. The reception and dinner may be held in the East Dining Room or larger parties can be held in our marquee extension which covers a walled garden complete with a summer house for the bar and a fountain around which the tables are set. After dinner you may enjoy dancing or other entertainment and then drive away down the tree lined avenue and look back on a magnificent floodlit house. Alternatively, you and some of your guests may stay the night in one of our splendidly appointed bedrooms and leave after a leisurely breakfast the next morning.
Offer extended! Any couple booking their wedding within six months of their wedding date, will be offered complimentary wedding night accommodation along with a 'Champagne Toast' upgrade of their chosen drinks package
