If your New Year resolutions are seldom kept, here is an alternative! Throughout the year, when something good happens that makes you happy, write it down on a piece of paper and keep it in a jar. The following New Year’s Eve read them all and remember how you felt. I plan to do this and maybe next New Year I will feel thankful instead of disappointed about all those things I didn't do!

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS True knowledge of Jesus must be personal and life transforming Remembering is such an important part of our everyday existence. If we did not have this faculty, we could not even get back home if we left it and walked some distance away. Now getting back home is absolutely important because if we did not, we would feel terribly lost and nothing would make us happy unless we found our way back home. Living in the world can be like that sometimes - we sometimes feel we are a bit at sea, tossed about and not fully in control of things. We sense we have not got it all worked out, completely and securely, in our present circumstances nor for the future. There is always a sense of mystery about life, some unanswered questions. This can make us a bit restless, prompting us to look for answers or the path to peace and happiness. Precisely in such our very human situation of questioning and restlessness, Christ offers this awesome, all-embracing and justly- famous statement : ‘I am the way, the truth and the life.’ (John14:6) We can understand ‘the Way’ to mean the way to our real home, ‘the truth’: the truth that gives meaning to life and existence, ‘and life’ - the fullness of life. This is surely an incredibly bold statement in the face of

the frailty of life as we know it. It offers the possibility of a satisfying experience in our life confronted as we are with some fundamental questions. Where did we come from? What is the meaning of life? What comes after death? Where do I find peace? What is true happiness? Christians believe that in the person and life of Jesus, God has offered the world what a person requires for a fulfilled and fully meaningful life, not without its problems and difficulties, but which not even death can ultimately destroy. Indeed he has offered the world the basic values that it requires to build a just, peaceful and joyful society. We have just celebrated Christmas. The decorations have come down, the lovely music and carols have fallen silent for another year. It is good to remember that the root of the Christmas tree and therefore the heart of Christmas, is Jesus, his birth in Bethlehem in Judea, Israel. We celebrate this event every year with joy and with messages and acts of love and peace because we associate Jesus, as many generations have done, with these great virtues that the human spirit seeks so passionately. Once Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ They answered him, ‘Some say, John the Baptist, others Elijah and still others, one

of the prophets’’. ‘But you,’ he asked,’ who do you say I am?’ Then Simon Peter said, ’You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’ (Matthew 16.13-16). Now when it comes to knowledge of Jesus, there are insiders and outsiders. True knowledge of Jesus must be personal and life transforming. One’s knowledge of Jesus may have come largely through the media or what one may have heard from some people either for or against him. One may have been disturbed or even scandalised by the deeds of certain Christians today or in history. Or one may feel in this overwhelmingly scientific and technological age that religion and science are incompatible. All this is looking at Jesus from the outside. But we need to meet him personally ourselves from inside, as an insider. It makes all the difference. We do so in several ways. The Bible is one fantastic way, but we need some guidance to really get into it. A loving welcoming Christian assembly can help us find him. And finding him might just be the start of an exciting ever- changing life in him.

New Year and resolutions time again. I think after last year’s resolutions I have managed to get a little bit fitter and, more importantly, stay a little bit fitter through the year - possibly helped by a lot of tramping the streets during the hard fought referendum campaign. With the Westminster Election fast approaching in May it is very much a leap from one campaign straight into another but one I relish, as the best part of being a politician is the opportunity to speak to people in the communities I represent around Moray and getting their views first hand. So the New Year’s Resolution is probably covered by more tramping of streets. Look forward to seeing folks out and about in 2015!

As we go out with the old of 2014 and in with the new of 2015 it has been an amazing year in Scotland but much closer to home in the past few weeks it has been great seeing my 2 boys taking part in the Christmas Concert at their school in Elgin. The amount of effort put in by all the children in schools across Moray is fantastic, as is the efforts of the teachers, Classroom Assistants and parents who pull it all together. Next up will be the adults performing and, possibly some children as well, in Burns Supper season, which is always a good night and catch up with friends. A great way to end one year and start the next! Richard Lochhead MSP LOW TIDE TIMES FOR FINDHORN IN JANUARY Walking on the beach should be possible 2 hours either side of these times 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Football Files

A profile on John Hughs, Manager of

Caledonain Thistle FC Time flies when you're having fun and it's certainly the case for Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager John Hughes.

Spend any more than sixty seconds in the man's company and his beliefs and ideas for football teams to play the game in the correct manner will quickly be evident. Hughes wants his side to play football in a style that is just as attractive as the Highland scenery surrounding the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.

The former Hibernian and Falkirk manager took over the reigns at the Inverness club a year ago taking over from Terry Butcher and made the move to the Highlands unsure of what to expect in his new surroundings.

That’s why it’s no surprise to see Caley Thistle once more towards the top end of the SPFL Premiership and aiming for an even higher position than last season.

Fast forward a year and like his predecessor, Hughes has settled nicely into the area and would even go as far to say he's in love with his new abode.

John Hughes and his team are looking to push on in 2015 and with the philosophy that the manager is implementing at the club, here’s to continued progress and success.

He's able to combine his biggest passions in the tranquil environment, cycling, golf and especially coaching football!!

GreenThumb

Our small team of 4 based here in the Moray Firth, will have a busy year ahead as we will have over 1,000 regular customers presenting us with their lawn problems. Sounds a lot, but we are a pretty small franchise up here though. GreenThumb across the UK will have 500,000 customers this year ! As we will be providing local monthly updates as the season unfolds through the year again in Spotlight Magazine, we thought it might be nice to let you see where we are based.

Although we don’t know exactly what the weather will throw at us this season, we have a fair idea what we will be asked to tackle. Highlights will likely include: Winter Months Moss and thatch; we will be aerating and scarifying all hours of the day to get through everybody before the Spring Weed and Feed Treatments start. Also look out for leatherjackets emerging (crane fly grubs) and eating lawn roots, sometimes causing devastation. Spring Months Weedkill and Spring fertiliser; we will want some decent weather to get lawns off to a good start. Many of you will remember the very late/non-existent Spring in 2013. Summer Months Mowing; best practice is never cut shorter than 1 inch. Mowing too close is the most destructive thing you can do to a lawn (usually a man-thing) and in particular encourages

14

UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

moss to flourish ! June is when we will likely see the first signs of Red Thread fungal disease damage (wet summers are the worst). A repeat of last Summer would be good. Autumn Months Moss control treatments and winter feeds; we will want to get all our customers’ lawns ready for next winter, and most will want to think about aerating and scarifying outwith the growing season, either themselves or using us and our machines.

For more information about seasonal lawn improvements from just £15 per qtr, plus useful downloads and photos, go to www.greenthumb.co.uk. Although GreenThumb is a national franchise with over 200 branches across the UK, we are locally based in Nairnshire and cover the whole Moray Firth area. Chef’s Confidential

Beef Bourguignon Serves: 4 Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 2 hours Ingredients 2 tbsp plain flour

75ml brandy

1kg braising steak, cut into 2.5cm dice

750ml red wine

4–5 tbsp olive oil

1 litre beef stock

150g pancetta, cut into small cubes

1 bouquet garni (2 bay leaves, 2 sprigs of thyme,

1 shallot, peeled and finely chopped

2 sprigs of flat-leaf parsley)

2 onions, peeled and sliced

115g baby onions

1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed

25g butter

100 g French beans

Salt and black pepper

Method 1. Season the flour with salt and pepper and toss the beef in it. Place a large, non-stick frying pan over a high heat, add one to two tablespoons of olive oil and fry the beef for one to two minutes in batches, removing each batch from the pan when browned and placing it on a plate while you fry the rest, adding more oil as needed. (Too much meat in the pan at once will mean it takes longer to brown). 2. Add the pancetta and fry for one to two minutes or until golden brown, then tip in the shallot, onions and garlic and fry for a further two to three minutes or until browned. Return the cooked beef to the pan and mix well with the other ingredients. 3. Pour in the brandy and carefully set it alight to burn off the alcohol. Add the wine and stock and bring to a simmer. Add the bouquet garni, then cover and cook on a low heat for two hours or until tender and thickened. Alternatively, cook in the oven at 140°C/gas mark 1, for two hours, or in a slow cooker for three to four hours. 4. Half an hour before the meat is cooked, blanch the baby onions in boiling water for 30 seconds, then peel. Place a separate frying pan over a high heat, add the butter and a little olive oil and fry the onions for two to three minutes or until just golden, then add to the casserole for the last 20 minutes of cooking time. 5. Just before serving, check the seasoning. Spoon a generous portion of beef bourguignon on to each plate and a pile of creamy potato mash alongside, together with some green beans or carrots. Tips: The diced beef needs to soak in red wine over night. (You can use 250ml wine for marinade). The meat has to obsorb all the wine to get more tender.

Energy: Why is this a pressing local issue, winter 2014/5? Long dark nights…cold…snow on the ground. The comforting smell of holly. Perhaps a log fire with mulled wine wafting from the kitchen, surrounded by the comforting trappings of Christmas. The heating is high, lights are low and life is grand... As many as 15 million households would rather go without heating than pay sky-high bills, even though 36 per cent said rationing had affected their health and well-being last year, uSwitch found. Fuel Poverty is rising. HOW MUCH DO WE PAY?

QUALITY INSTALLATION IS CRITICAL

The average annual dual-fuel bill - covering gas and electricity - is about £1,264 per household. It is one of the largest regular bills that a household has to pay, behind mortgage or rent, and council tax.

Grampian Energy Services works primarily with Green Moray Renewables in Moray and the Highlands. A multi skilled and multi trade installer, they are able to tie differing systems together. Whether it is Solar PV to produce electricity, Solar Thermal to heat your hot water, a biomass boiler, a simple biomass stove or even a micro-wind generator. Green Moray Renewables have proven highly skilled and diverse. They have installed many of our projects right up to 50kW systems, often in the harshest of conditions, in addition to many of their own.

WHAT TO DO, WHERE TO BEGIN? ADVISING HOUSEHOLDS AND ENTERPRISES

Anyone can start the energy self-sufficiency journey. There’s much we can do to reduce our energy demand: Use Less, Lose Less, and Generate Onsite. Reduce heat loss, insulate, close up drafts, lag pipes and tanks, use heavy curtains over doors (like granny used to do) and use curtain liners. Fit low energy devices, LED lights, switch things off, don’t let hot water run, Grampian Energy Services gives advice to people no matter what their financial situation may be. Simple changes are simply better. HOME ENERGY GENERATION: SYSTEMS APPROACH

Each home, office and factory is unique. One solution does not fit all. Grampian Energy Services is not an installer and not tied to any preferred technology thus providing impartial, expert advice. They can guide you which technologies can work for you, Solar PV, Solar Thermal, when to use heat pump or deciding if wind power is right for your site. How do they tie together? Is energy storage viable? Get the honest opinion of experts.

Between Grampian Energy Services and Green Moray Renewables, they can design your system, complete the G59 grid connection applications, execute planning if required, provide an EPC and Green Deal reports, install your desired system (any technology), provide lifetime service and re-lamp you home with LEDs to boot. Green Moray Renewables and Grampian Energy supply customers with the most practical, cost effective solutions for their needs.

Simple changes are simply better! Article by Dave McGrath Grampian Energy Services & rhetoric by Sharon of Green Moray Renewables
