A BOAT beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die: Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream -Lingering in the golden dream Life, what is it but a dream? A poem by Lewis Carrol

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS ‘HELL’ ~ a word we have all heard, mostly in an unpleasant manner, but is it a real destination that someone can actually go to? Interestingly, in the Bible, the Lord Jesus speaks more about Hell than He does about Heaven and surely does so for two reasons:- firstly, He is the final judge who will pass sentence and condemn people to Hell forever; secondly, only from One who loved people enough to die for them can people receive this terrible truth. If there is in fact no such place as Hell, then the Bible becomes just a collection of interesting stories, promoting kindness between humans. Ministers of the Gospel become no more than religious social workers, seeking to alleviate society’s timeless problems as so many other agencies seek to do. If there is in fact such a place as Hell, as the Lord Jesus emphatically pronounces, then it raises the stakes altogether and gives a very acute understanding of why the life and death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus is such ‘good news’ (the meaning of Gospel) to all who trust in Him. Let Christ speak for Himself … see Luke 16:19~31. Here are two men set before us at the opposite extremes of society,

one incredibly rich and the other incredibly poor. Although they lived so differently, the same thing happened to them both - they died, just like I will, just like you will. If they had lived with great differences, then death placed an even greater difference between them. Undoubtedly the last luxury the rich man’s money could secure was a grand funeral, all the details of which were according to his wishes. However, as he passed from this world to the next, leaving his wealth and comforts behind, he had to face God and the truth about his life. Although outwardly religious, as all Jews were, having had no time for God or His way of salvation, he was condemned to spend eternity away from Him. With horror he realised what it was like to exist in darkness and despair, under punishment, with all God’s blessings withdrawn. His first reaction was to cry for help but he prays when it is too late to pray. Then he learned that no comfort could come from Heaven to anyone in Hell. His last request was also rejected, as the increased suffering he anticipated by the subsequent arrival of his family and friends in Hell, would not be prevented by God sending special messengers from Heaven to warn these people. Jesus says

that ample warning has already been given to all of mankind ~ the conscience betrays the fact He made us, Creation shouts at us everywhere and His Word is available, so He will send no other messenger, no other religion. In tremendous contrast, Lazarus was one of the most successful people who ever lived because he turned to Jesus in repentance and received real riches. Today, Jesus is waiting for you to turn to Him too, in order that He can prepare you for death and judgement. By the time Lazarus’s body was being tossed into a pauper’s grave, he had already begun the most amazing adventure in the comfort and love of Heaven, in the immediate presence of his Saviour, pure and free from the effects of sin, and with the prospect of a new body in a new earth, living out the eternal plan of the Lord Jesus that defies human description. Friend, where will you spend eternity? That depends on your response to Jesus Christ.

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES This is my first Spotlight column since the election and so I’d like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you for re-electing me to represent Moray in the Scottish Parliament! It has been an absolute honour to be an MSP here for over 10 years and I look forward to working hard in the next 5 years. During the election campaign my team and I literally knocked on thousands of doors, listening to people’s views. Over the next 5 years you can be sure that I will work hard for everyone in Moray, whether you voted for me or not. If I can be of assistance to you in any way please don’t hesitate to get in touch with my office or feel free to contact me directly at richard.lochhead.msp@parliament.uk. Once again, thank you for investing your trust in me and I’ll be working hard to ensure that Moray is represented to the best of my ability. Richard Lochhead MSP

Well, it's been an eventful few weeks. For a start, I got married to my fantastic partner Jen! It was a great day and a huge thank you for the many messages of congratulation that we received following our announcement. More recently I have been involved in European Referendum debates both in Moray and elsewhere. At the time of writing the referendum hasn't yet happened but by the time you read this we'll have an answer on it one way or another! I am also in the final preparations and training for the annual Tattie Scone Competition that takes place alongside the European Pipe Band Championships in Forres. Forres Highland Games 2016

Tom Logie - Chieftain 2016 Forres Highland Games, an annual celebration of traditional Scottish sport, music and entertainment, takes place on Saturday 9th July 2016 in Grant Park in Forres. Proceedings get under way at 12.30 pm with the Opening Ceremony.

Bands marching around the arena to the skirl o the pipes and swish o’ the kilts. A sight and sound not to be missed and one for the photo album.

The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain, Mr Tom Logie, a retired local businessman, Forres Heritage Trust leading light and Burgess of the Royal Burgh of Forres. Tom has supported the Games over more than two decades.

Staging the 88th annual Forres Highland Games is only possible through the dedication of the unpaid Games Committee, volunteer judges and local helpers, and the loyal support and generosity of local benefactors and businesses.

The best of track and field athletes, the “heavies, highland dancers, pipers, grass track cyclists and pipe bands will compete and entertain the spectators in what is sure to be a colourful and enjoyable Scottish highland gathering.

A classical summer celebration of Scottish culture.

There are numerous displays and trade stands, as well as hot and cold food, ice cream and a licenced beer tent.

As usual, it marks the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by an extremely dedicated team of volunteers who form the Gala Committee. It could not happen, though, were it not for the huge amount of community spirit in the Village. We are so thankful to the churches, shops, pubs and businesses that continuously support us. We are also extremely grateful to all the people who dedicate their time to help during the week, whether it be serving teas, baking cakes, setting quiz questions, playing songs or even tent sitting. Your help is very much appreciated: thank you.

Nairnshire Farming Society Nairn Show 2016 Fun for all !the

The Nairnshire Farming Society is holding its 218th Annual Show on Saturday the 30th of July at Kinnudie Farm Auldearn.

Nairn Show will have something for everyone with an excellent food fair, quality trade stands, a full and varied programme of afternoon entertainment and an excellent display of livestock in the cattle, sheep and horse sections. This year’s show is shaping up to be a very attractive and fun-filled day for all the family and we are hoping for a good crowd. Car parking is to be free this year whilst admission charges are held at £10 per Adult, £5 per concession and secondary school child, £1 per primary child, and pre-school children having free admission. Our charges are set at a level to cover the substantial set up costs associated with the show and also to enable the society to make donations to local clubs and charities. Visitors will also be treated to a varied line up of trade stands both on the field and under canvas in the Food and Craft Fairs which will offer all kinds of merchandise including local produce and fancy goods as well as the very latest agricultural machinery. The Food Fair will again include cookery demonstrations throughout the day by various providers in a dedicated kitchen area.

Family

There will also be a display of vintage tractors and machinery, a range of catering facilities, including the return of a public catering marquee and a licensed bar. As ever the marquee competitions will be highy competitive and no doubt will produce a wonderful display of horticulture, wine, honey, baking, produce and handicrafts. Main Ring entertainment will include visits by Ringside Lurchers and Nairn and District Pipe Band. It will also feature a Vintage Tractor Parade, Horse and Carriage Display, The Penguin’s Tuxedo Street Band, Livestock Parades and Children’s races. Scotty’s Circus Workshop will be in attendance providing entertainment for our younger visitors. Horse Show Jumping will also take place in a separate arena and also in the main ring later in the day. The Nairn Show website, www.nairnshow.org.uk, will be updated regularly between now and show day to give the most up to date information regarding the show. The day will be rounded off with a Marquee Dance in the Showfield from 9pm to 1am with dancing to music by BIRO. Admission is open to persons aged 16 and over with a wristband scheme and requirement for ID in place.

(Fred will explain the 'live' relevance during his show). Approaching 30 years as a stand-up comedian, Fred's energy and enthusiasm for comedy are as strong today as they ever were. From the early days as 'the rising star of Scottish Comedy' to 'legend' has been quite a journey for the one-time accountant and audiences can expect a mix of politics and observational humour. 27th July- Fred MacAulay Nairn Community & Arts Centre

The Forres Youth and Families Outreach Project is a new project funded by the GO For IT initiative, which is funded by the Church of Scotland. A key aim of this project is for the local churches to work in partnership and reach out to the local community and to demonstrate a strong Christian influence. The funding agency in the Church Of Scotland - GO FOR IT - aims to encourage creative ways of working which develop the life and mission of the local churches.

Judith’s main role is to work with the children and youth of Forres and to find ways for them to engage with each other, their environment and also to find ways for the churches of Forres to come together on joint projects. She took early medical retirement from PE teaching and comes with a lot of experience, not only in teaching, but also engaging with children and young people through Sunday School, badminton clubs, tennis clubs, holiday programmes and lots more.

There are two part-time workers employed by the Project, Dawn Alderson and Judith Watts.

The first initiative Judith is working on is to run a summer club using Scripture Union material. Called The Guardians of Ancora, this will run from Monday 1st August to Friday 5th August 10am till 12 noon each day. The Summer club will include fun, games, crafts and a bible story. This club is suitable for 5 to 11 year olds and for those who have no or very little church background, to those who go to church regularly. Nobody will be excluded from this Christian activity.

Dawn

Judith

Dawn’s role is concentrating on helping families who are struggling, and she comes with considerable experience from working with disaffected young people, those in prison and family support in the north of England. She currently is working with 7 families within the Forres area – areas of work include liaison with local schools, helping families with managing money, their tenancy agreements, emotional and mental health and much more. Presently she is working with two families, in partnership with Environmental Education and the Healthy Living Centre, which is giving the families cookery classes once a fortnight for 6 sessions. These have proved to be very successful, in not only teaching all the family members about healthy living choices, but also in getting the families to interact and work alongside and with each other.

Once the new term starts next academic year, there are 2 more initiatives which will begin. The first one is running an Alpha course. Alpha is for anyone who is curious. The talks are designed to encourage conversations and explore the Christian faith in an open relaxed environment. You might not have any belief or want to reaffirm your belief. We are particularly targeting young mums and dads to come along to this. This will start on Friday 19th August in the morning, details will follow later. In September, Messy Church will start and this will be on the third Saturday of the month 2 – 4pm. Messy Church is designed to be fun, creative and Christ centred. All ages will be made welcome from 0 years to 99 years and beyond.

It is about learning together in a fun relaxed way.

Making Whole Family Recovery Possible Arrows is a holistic service for individuals affected by alcohol and drugs. We support both Adults experiencing drug and alcohol problems, and children and families affected by a loved one’s substance use. The range of supports available in Arrows are both individual and group centred and can be used as part of a whole family approach to recovery or one to one support personally tailored and unique to each family’s circumstances.

program. Arrows work to improve coping strategies and parenting approaches through supporting effective communication, providing whole family activities, play and positive experiences.

As Recovery is personal the confidential nature of treatment and support with Arrows is upmost and we support individuals to understand the boundaries of sharing information, as well as making informed choices when involving loved ones within our whole family approach.

Friends, family or others connected to an individual may recognise their drug or alcohol issue first. Being in a close relationship with someone struggling with an addiction can be frustrating, painful and sometimes a lonely journey.

Worried about your substance use and its impact on your family and relationships? Individuals experiencing drug and alcohol issues may feel isolated from loved ones, unable to seek support from those closest to them or pressurised into establishing positive changes which can lead to deterioration within relationships, and creating further challenges for recovery. Arrows can support you to involve loved ones in your recovery at a pace and level that suits you. We can guide you to have conversations with loved ones inviting their involvement within your recovery plan. Many of our activities, groups and events are family inclusive; we provide focused support through couples and family counselling. Arrows work with parents experiencing substance issues to support their role as a parent within their recovery treatment

Arrows can support parents to recognise the needs of their children throughout their recovery journey, how to support them through the changes involved and in hearing their views within the family’s support.

Worried about a loved one and their substance use?

We can work with you using a range of CBT based tools, helping you cope and support your loved one. Many of these skills are valuable for the family even if your loved one does not enter treatment or has already begun the treatment process. Arrows can support friends and family to understand and discuss problematic substance use with their loved one to help prevent situations escalating.

Linking with Carers Support Family members often don’t recognise themselves as unpaid carers even though they are entitled to the carer supports available. Arrows and Quarriers Carers Support Service (Moray) can work with you on a joint register to ensure access to the training, short breaks and group supports available through their Service.

“An exquisite dining experience!” The Drouthy Cobbler have added another string to their already impressive bow - a pop-up restaurant upstairs on Saturday nights only! For those of you looking for a refined culinary experience, look no further. On arrival the bar area buzzed with excited energy and was comfortably full of relaxed, happy faces and then we were taken upstairs where the dramatic difference in decor and atmosphere was stunningly breathtaking. In contrast to the earthy, cave-like feel of the bar downstairs, the restaurant was all black with white linen, shiny cutlery, crystal clear glasses and a stylish bar. The soft music and low lighting made you feel like you were stepping into another world. Once seated we were offered water for the table and a selection of delicious breads. The staff cannot be faulted - upstairs or down - they present a friendly and upbeat attitude, communicate specials, make menu recommendations and listen well to customer orders. They are always happy to help and nothing is too much effort. Happy staff will always go the extra mile. There is a set, 3 course menu with the option of having only 2 courses and is different every time. Our selection that night was sublime. I started with Beef tartare, slow cooked egg yolk, toasted brioche and brie fondue and it was truly remarkable, perfect actually! I could've had seconds which is more a reflection on the otherworldly taste than the portion size. My husband had Spiced Orkney crab cakes, tomato & sweetcorn salsa with baby herb salad and he was equally as delighted with his taste sensation. For the main course, I decided to go with Seared tuna loin, olives, fine beans, sun dried tomatoes, jersey royals & sauce gribiche - a delightful feast for the eyes and equally as exquisite on the tastebuds! My other half was spoiled with Slow cooked Clash farm pork belly, crispy polenta, chickpea cassoulet, spinach & Stornoway black pudding - all the things that ring his bells! Dessert seemed too much to tackle alone as we were both sated, but it would've been rude not to - right? We decided to share and were recommended the Chocolate blondie with peanut butter sauce - it was served with vanilla ice cream and we were glad we 'made space' The dishes were executed perfectly both to look at and taste. I know I sound like I'm gushing, but with good cause. I'm competent in the kitchen so when I go out I love to eat something I couldn't or wouldn't make myself and this was truly a gastronomic sensation! Oh, I forgot to mention the expansive array of drinks - but we'll leave that for another time! A review by Jeff & Tamsyn - June 16
