To most people, Paul Tonkinson might be known as 'that Northern bloke from the telly.' If you don't recognise his face, you might recognise his voice as 'that Northern bloke from the radio.' Paul started stand-up in 1992, when he won the Time Out New Act of the Year Award. Now a bone fide veteran of the comedy stage, you may also recognise Paul from his appearance on BBC1ʼs Michael McIntyres Comedy Roadshow.
Paul Tonkinson
Jarred Christmas has a unique style that deftly mixes gags with storytelling. He has a dynamic onstage persona and the ability to improvise and roll with anything thatʼs thrown his way, making his comedy sizzle with originality. Full of passion and charisma Jarred takes the audience on a hilarious thrill ride of laughs and gasps with an edge of anger that manifests itself in his incredible rants against the small things in our lives. His confidence leaves the audience secure in the knowledge that they are in very capable hands. His material is strong and distinctive, drawn from life experience and random happenings. His laugh out loud tales are packed with jokes and the good times flow non-stop with Jarred Christmas. Zoe Lyons is a highly sought after act on both the national and international circuit. Zoë takes a sideways view of life, picking out the many absurdities and turning them into hilarious routines which she delivers with tremendous energy, drawing on her acting skills to provide a kaleidoscope of voices and faces throughout the act. She also demonstrated to the nation her ability to laugh in the face of adversity, as a contestant on ITV's 'Survivor!' where she ate a rat and lived to tell the tale.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS
This year we had a long winter and often disappointing weather. It has required ,of many outdoor workers, a degree of endurance. I have to admire our older folks , many of whom no longer have the luxury of a car, when they turn out to church and other public events in the cold wind and rain. Often it is the generation who were brought up in hard times that manage to face the elements and continue to support their community and Church.
Endurance is not a popular idea these days. For almost two generations, instant rewards and gratification are what people expect. The idea of having to work hard for nice things is seen to be a thing of the past. But with a declining economy and global economic competition, the next generation will be asking Granny.... “ how did you manage when times were harder? “ Often young people fall back on the “bank of dad and mum” believing they deserve the same standard of house car
holidays and luxuries that their parents worked hard for a lifetime to afford. In a world of computers and automation factories, there is very little hard work left. And sadly the current young generation are being termed the unemployed generation, across Europe. Their best chance of employment is to become self employed and offer support services to the more secure older generation. For that they will need endurance.
There is nothing new in hard times. God does not give special favours to His own people. If anything, God keeps us all fairly robust. The early Christians and the early Church had to face difficulties including being frozen out of places of worship and from Roman society. St Paul, the great teacher of the early church encouraged them in their hardships. He wrote to them with this advice...... . ( Rom 5, v3 -5 ) “...we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces endurance;

endurance builds , character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. “ If you have any trials to endure this year, then take heart that God’s plan can use these hard times to build in you the qualities of endurance, character and hope. COMMUNITY COUNCIL MINUTES
EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF 18TH APRIL 2013 OF FORRES COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Public Session: The Chair welcomed Police Constables Gorman & Bentley asking them to update the members with the latest Police Report. During the last month there had been a number of drug stop searches which led to six individuals being dealt with for possession of cannabis. A drugs search warrant was executed in the Morlich Square area of Forres. Three individuals were dealt with for being concerned with the supply of controlled drugs and a male was reported for Police assault and subsequently being found in possession of controlled substance A motorist was dealt with for driving under the influence of alcohol and seven others for speeding whilst two were reported for careless driving, one of them after an accident. Roads policing officers dealt with two road users for having defective or faulty equipment as part of an agricultural vehicle and another was seized after the driver was found to be driving without insurance. Fixed penalty notices were issued, one for consuming alcohol in a public place, contrary to local bylaws, one for a minor street disturbance and two for urinating in the street. A road accident at the East end of the bypass led to a vehicle damaging the pedestrian barrier with no injuries and on the 13th of April a skimming device was found on the ATM at Tesco, enquiries are ongoing. The Chair thanked the officers for their report. The Community Warden, Dave Haytack, told the meeting that following the letter passed on from the Comm Council about dog fouling near the Academy he had identified the culprit and a report, with a name, Dyke Landward Community Council Meets 3rd Tuesday of each month 7pm at Dyke Village Hall. Contact: Caroline MacLeod (Chair) 01309 672481 page 8 - July 2013
had been issued, the litter problem had been clamped down on as well. A member of the public, Mr Jeronim, said that he was disappointed to see no Moray Cllrs at the meeting with answers to his questions. He said that a letter, from Cllr Alexander, was factually incorrect as agricultural vehicles use the back road, making it unsafe for children to cycle on it with no verge available for them to leave the road in many places. He said that the petition of support for the cycle way to be reinstated was gathering pace and signatures of support were flooding in. At a time when fitness and a healthy lifestyle was being actively encouraged by government agencies cycle paths would be a priority. Mrs Hayward gave us an update on her personal complaint against Cll. Alexander. MC have admitted that the mediation procedure they conducted was flawed and have issued an apology. Mrs Hayward has accepted that apology. Having said that, they also said that a proper mediation procedure was unlikely to get the result she wanted and suggested that she take her case directly to the Public Standards Commissioner. This she intends to do.
Secretary’s Report:The Secretary said that he had received mail from the Chair of the Friends of the Falconer Museum inviting us to attend the AGM on 30th April A letter, thank us for our support for a funding application to replace the flat roof area of the Forres Squash & Fitness Club. The Secretary said that he had received information from NHS Grampian on the launch of their

Planning and Heritage Scotland had been notified that this was a listed building and therefore demolition was not an option. She also drew attention to the lack of movement in the application concerning Hanover Court where there had been no further action after boarding up the windows. All that did was draw attention to the building.

Elgin BID’s showcase event in Elgin Town Hall last month deserves a mention. It was a great family event and I was persuaded to become a model for the night and show off highland-wear from local shops. There was some great backstage banter at the event and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Congratulations to the organisers and especially to Out of the Darkness Theatre Group and all those on stage (who had far more to remember than my own walk-on/walk-off role!). The event was once again a great success and did exactly what it said on the tin by showcasing local businesses in an innovative and fun way.
While I am always at pains to point out the dangers of over-consumption of alcohol it is also important to point out the positives of the industry, particularly here in Moray where we produce a huge amount of high quality alcohol product that is generally not associated with anti-social behaviour. In that respect it has been great to see three breweries springing up in quick succession in Moray, producing exactly that - high quality product for those with a taste for quality and complexity and for a drink that is to be savoured! We have the Speyside Craft Brewery in Forres, the Windswept Brewing Company in Lossiemouth and, most recently, Brewmeister in Keith. A solid sweep right across the county. The great thing about specialist breweries is that they are more of a compliment to each other than competition and having three is a fantastic addition to Moray’s booming food and drink sector.

Caring about... Before Renovation
...complete Lawn Renovation. A project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone… wouldn’t know where to start… best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive however whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a before and after picture taken just a few weeks apart last summer. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper. 3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting. 4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m2 to renovate, compared with around £12 per m2 to replace, it really is worth considering.

Dreaming of...
SPAIN Costa Daurada in the Catalonia region of Spain is the home to Salou and Portaventura, a firm holiday favourite with families and couples looking for some sun just a short flight away. Salou is a bustling Spanish holiday resort with an abundance of bars, shops and restaurants to cater for every taste, a beautiful promenade and sandy beach. The public bus service around the area makes it very easy to explore the surrounding area, whether it is the short trip along the coast to Cambrill with its fresh seafood restaurants and peaceful surroundings, or a trip in the opposite direction towards Tarragona, to Bonavista where the Sunday market is held, which is frequented by locals and tourists alike. A visit to Salou would be incomplete without a trip to Portaventura, the theme park with its variety of rides and shows for people of all ages. Travel through the different worlds of China, Mexico, Polynesia, the Mediterranean and the Far West to experience the different concepts in each destination. For you thrill seekers Portaventura is also home to the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Europe; you could easily spend a day here and leave half of the park undiscovered! An hours drive north of Salou is Barcelona, the capitol of Catalonia and the 2nd largest city in Spain. For a total contrast to your beach holiday in Salou a day trip to Barcelona is recommended. Spend the day wandering down Las Ramblas or exploring the city and discovering some of the stunning architecture designed by Gaudi, (highlights are the Sagrada Familia and the Park Guell). Last but not least, for any football fans, Camp Nou offers daily tours through the museum and stadium, with lots of photo opportunities, and even the chance to get your hands on the Champions League Trophy.

review “friendly and efficient service...” A warm and welcoming atmosphere is what greets diners on arrival at the Royal Hotel & Restaurant in Keith. The dining room and its anteroom are up a short flight of stairs and offer comfortable chairs and tasteful decoration – an ambience that whets the appetite for what one expects to be a meal to relish. Every day the restaurant has an excellent choice of specials as well as the more formal a la carte menu. The Royal specialises in fresh Scottish seafood and succulent rib-eye steaks, and we were told that the cranachan is to-die-for. We chose to be a little more delicate in our menu selection. To start we picked Butternut Squash and Ginger Soup – a warming, creamy and sweetish flavour with a faint ginger under-taste – extremely moreish, and a soup for which you would like to borrow the chef’s recipe. The Hot Goat’s Cheese was covered in a subtle herb breadcrumb coating that gave crunch to the smooth, clean and creamy cheese. The accompanying cranberry sauce was a rich and fruity delight to the palette. Seared Salmon fillets in caper butter beckoned, and the crispy skin and softness of the salmon was more than complemented by the vegetables and the smoothness of the melted caper butter. This was not for the faint-hearted – this was a man-sized portion (as indeed were they all). On our other plate was a Rack of Lamb, cooked to a professional and perfect pinkness. The creamed potatoes were silky smooth and spiced with mustard seeds, while the medley of vegetables was cooked to perfection – nothing soft and flabby here. The wine list was more than ample and diverse, offering crisp white sauvignon or chenin blanc to fully robust Chateau Neuf du Pape, as well as bubbly like Moet et Chandon should you be in celebration mode.

Restaurant Review by Karen & Peter Evans
The service was wonderful and ultra-efficient throughout the evening, and the friendliness was so commendable considering that too many hotel restaurants are renowned for being cold and formal. Would we choose to take our friends and family to The Royal for dinner? Emphatically, yes. We would recommend the warm atmosphere, the friendly and efficient service, the chefs and their delicious menus – don’t just take our word, book a table or two and enjoy your own evening at The Royal.

Forres Highland Games Chieftain 2013...
...Neville Sillitoe The 2013 Forres Highland Games will be celebrating a twenty eight year association with legendary Australian athletics Coach Neville Sillitoe, awarding him the honour of being this year’s Chieftain. In 2008 Neville was awarded an honorary life membership of The Forres Highland Games for his continued support, providing international competition for local youngsters, with his travelling party of Melbourne young athletes. Every summer Neville travels to Europe with a squad of talented young Melbourne athletes, touring and competing at various prestigious meets. His last port of call on the way home has traditionally been The Forres Highland Games, where his athletes have entertained the Games spectators in their famous green and gold vests. Neville has competed/coached athletics all his adult life and was coach to the legendary 200M sprinter Peter Norman who won Olympic Silver at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He also went on to coach the Australian 1982 Commonwealth Team, but he has also retained his passion for training athletes at grass roots level, with his long association at Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne. Neville founded the Paramount Junior Football Club primarily to give young boys an organized activity on a Saturday and Sunday. Paramount became one of the most successful clubs in junior football in the
Metropolitan area of Melbourne. Neville was both administrator and coach. Paramount grew to be one of the largest and most successful clubs in the junior competition. Such was his success that even today, Dads and Grandfathers who were part of his many Paramount teams, talk of him in legendary terms. In the words of Gary Holdsworth one of Australia’s Commonwealth Games Medallists coached by Neville “Neville has touched all our lives in the special bond that draws coach and athlete together. Photograph: Dave Conner

Meet the minister The Lighthouse Church is a small, friendly Church, with a good mix of people – young, old, single, married, families, but above all it has a deep love for the Lord and a desire to share the good news of the gospel with others. We meet at the Clovenside Chapel – you could say the dead centre of Forres! – which is actually a really nice, bright and welcoming building, and we look forward to seeing the Church grow. At the moment we are still living in Inverness but we are planning to move to Forres on the 3rd of July.
The Lighthouse Baptist Church in Forres (a member of the Baptist Union of Scotland) has recently appointed a new minister, the Rev. Dr. Jon Mackenzie to be its full time pastor. We asked him

God called me into pastoral ministry.

My home Church at the time recognized God’s calling and employed me as their assistant pastor as I went through the process of becoming an ordained Baptist minister. My prayer as the pastor of the Lighthouse Church is the same as the words written on Cash’s gravestone: ‘Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.’

Christ for Me Let others build their hopes of eternal happiness upon whatever foundation they please; my choice is made – it is CHRIST FOR ME. Some are resting upon their blameless character, or upon their exemplary manner of life. Others are trusting the Church and its ordinances – membership, baptism, communion, long service, or official position. I dare not build upon anything that I have done, nor on anything a fellow-sinner might do for me. My only hope is the perfect sinless work of a perfect sinless Saviour: it is CHRIST FOR ME. My nature is corrupt (Psalm 51:5 , Ephesians 2:1-3). My best is stained with sin (Isaiah 64:6 , Romans 3:23). I need a new heart, a new birth, a new life, if I am ever to enter heaven (John 3:3 , 1 Peter 1: 3&4). The work of my salvation required the Son of God, Himself God (John 1:1&2, Colossians 2:9); to take to Himself sinless manhood (John 1:14, Philippians 2:5-8), in order to die for my sins upon the cross of Calvary (Isaiah 53:5&6, 1 Peter 3:18). Only by this means could I be redeemed from the power and penalty
of sin (Ephesians 1:7), and be born of the Spirit into God’s own family (John 1:12&13). That is why it is CHRIST FOR ME. Soon we must die, or else the Lord will come again, and then every hope will be submitted to its final test. How infinitely thankful I will then be, when by the merits of Christ’s precious blood I am transported safe into His presence, that I built upon a sure foundation and not upon a foundation of sand. How grateful then, that my decision, made in life, was CHRIST FOR ME. And when time shall cease and the day of judgement shall have run its solemn course, then shall the true Rock of Salvation tower in solitary grandeur over the wreckage of every blighted hope, delusive doctrine and human endeavour. While all those who built upon any other foundation shall languish in hopeless torment and misery in the lake of fire., I shall reign with Christ in endless bliss and glory, not through any merit of my own but simply because by the mercy of God I was moved to decide - CHRIST FOR ME. All other hopes I completely and utterly abandon. I have counted the cost; I have weighed the alternatives; I have made my choice – in life, in death, and throughout eternity, it must be – and it is - CHRIST FOR ME.
