All elections over now at least until next year anyway! Whether the result went well for you personally or not I guess we should remember those countries that do not have the benefit of any elections at all or where elections are routinely rigged. We should spare a thought for all the political prisoners who are being held in places like Indonesia, Thailand, Tibet and North Korea to name just a few.

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS God’s guidance If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139: 9-10. Throughout our lives we reflect on the past and wonder what the future holds. With a major event about to take place, the certainty of events happening through time makes me think deeply of the relationship between past, present and the future. At the present time of writing there is less than one week to go before the nation decides who will form the next government. You now know the exact outcome. For me, Polling Day is a future event. For you it’s already come and gone. At a personal level we can be certain that events will come our way regardless of whether we are prepared for them or not. If it were possible to go back into the past, would we consider planning our lives differently in order to secure a better future? If so, would our ability to rewrite the past guarantee a better future? Not according to the eighteenth century politician, Edmund Burke (17291797), when he writes, ‘You can never plan the future by the past’. I wonder

how each of us might interpret the stark reality of his statement; suffice to say we can’t change events that have already occurred. We can’t change the past. We can, however, plan for the future. Through my Christian faith, I know that God doesn’t remove challenging events for the sake of making my life easier. Being a Christian doesn’t give us the right to opt out of tragedy or suffering, but the Bible teaches us of God’s plan and promise to guide us through circumstances we ultimately can’t change. Put simply, ‘Where God guides, He provides; where He directs, He protects’. (Bob Gass, Church Pastor). Throughout the ages, God has consistently declared His promise to guide His people: ‘The Lord will guide you always…’ (Isaiah 58:11). Isaiah, a wise, faithful and prominent spokesman for God, declared this message seven hundred years before Jesus’ birth. Isaiah brought word of God’s judgement, but he also carried the message of God’s forgiveness, comfort and hope. This hope looked forward to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would come as a suffering servant and sovereign Lord. I now understand why God’s plan would never change,

because God’s perfect plan is made perfect in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ‘light’ that makes us see ourselves as we really are. He lights the way ahead so we can follow. His way of life is our guide so that we can avoid walking blindly and falling into sin. Future events will come and go. We can take matters into our own hands when going about the business of planning our lives, or we can take a different path. We step forward with our plans knowing that there is no going back in time to undo what has already been done, but with God’s help we can make those changes today. When thinking about what the future holds, I hope you would bear in mind these few words: ‘In the light of eternity, we shall see that what we desired would have been fatal to us, and that which we would have avoided is essential to our well-being’. (Fenelon) God’s plan withstands the test of time whether past, present or future. He knows what lies ahead of us, offering a guiding hand, revealing His plan as we come to trust in Him. Surely our lives are secure in His hands. Lloyd Gallantree Elder, The Lighthouse Church, Forres

Forres Highland Games 2015

Ken Davies - Chieftain 2015 The annual celebration of Scottish sport and entertainment that is Forres Highland Games, takes place at Grant Park on Saturday the 4th of July, with the Opening Ceremony commencing at 12.30 pm. The official opening will be carried out by this year’s Games Chieftain Mr Ken Davies, an Athletics Official of many years standing, who will welcome all the; spectators, athletes, dancers, pipers, cyclists and pipe bands, to what will be a colourful and competitive spectacle for all concerned. Over the years a number of famous and developing athletes have competed at Forres Highland Games, entertaining the crowds and displaying a high standard of competitive action. Local Highland Games such as Forres have been a nurturing ground for many young athletes throughout the years; with Jamie Bowie (Inverness Harriers), Rachael McKenzie (Inverness Harriers) and Mark Dry (Elgin AAC), who all proudly wore the Blue Scottish Vest at last year’s Commonwealth Games.

There will be an event packed Highland Dancing competition open to all ages, which is always extremely popular viewing with our overseas visitors, as will the solo piping competition. However, the highlight of the afternoon is the assembly of the Massed Pipe Bands. The first Saturday in July is synonymous with Forres Highland Games; however it would not be possible without the dedication of the Games committee, volunteer judges and many local businesses who have been outstanding supporters of this classical celebration of Scottish culture. UK FRANCHISE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP

2013

Don’t be Shy. Use a Sprinkler – it’s FREE (and the grass will love it) I often think the Moray Firth has a climate, the rest of Scotland just has weather! We also have a lot of sand around however. The reasonably dry climate, sometimes drying winds, and sandy soil, mean that the grass dries up pretty quickly in these parts. Grass is a plant, like any other plant, and it responds well to regular watering. If we have a week of dry, sunny weather, the grass begins to brown off. This puts unnecessary stress on the plant, and weakens it. A weak plant is unable to compete for moisture and nutrients as effectively, as well as losing its’ colour. It puts up less of a challenge for the competition out there, and that means weeds and moss. 30 minutes each evening in a dry spell (less evaporation then) with a sprinkler on will stop this quite easily. Many people have a sprinkler already (but it’s in the garage and has

Alastair Watt

been for years – right?). Grass will also quickly be overcome by moss if it’s cut too short, probably the worst thing you can do. Don’t mow less than 1”. Think shag pile carpet, you wont be far off. Take the blades up a notch. The grass will be greener, stronger, and look after itself much better.

“Hailed as the hottest new act on the UK Contemporary Country Music scene...” 8 awards in 3 years, the only act to perform at all three mega-successful Country2Country festivals at London’s O2 Arena and the first to sell out the Brooklyn Bowl (London), the multi-award winning duo ‘Raintown’ - from Glasgow - are fast gaining the reputation as one of the hottest Country acts in Europe. They are excited to be coming - with the full band and guests - to Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Saturday June 27th.. The recently married couple, Paul Bain and Claire McArthurBain, fuse their passion for Country Music with their eclectic musical influences and continue the tradition of exciting new music to emerge from Scotland. The couple said “Nairn will always hold a special place for us both. We know the live music fans in the area love a great night out and we cannot wait to bring our show to the fantastic Nairn Community & Arts Centre on June 27th.” “Dynamic”, “electric” and “mesmerising,” these are just some of the adjectives that have described Raintown’s live performances. It promises to be a great night. Tickets are available for £12, from the Ticket Hotline 01667 453 476. “…everyone’s talking about Raintown.” Baylen Leonard – BBC Radio 2 Country

Chef’s Confidential

Baked Pears with Cinnamon Served with a Crème Anglaise Sauce Serves 4 Ingredients Sauce: 2 egg yolks 60g/2oz sugar Vanilla pod (or vanilla essence) 250ml /1/2pt milk Lemon rind, finely grated, to decorate

Pears: 4 ripe pears 2 tbsp lemon juice 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar 1tsp ground cinnamon 60g/2oz butter Method Pears:

Sauce:

Preheat the oven to 200oC. Core and peel the pears, then slice them in half lengthwise and brush all over with the lemon juice. Place the pears, cored side down, in a small non-stick roasting tin.

Bring the milk and vanilla pod to the boil, remove the pod, pour milk onto the egg yolks and sugar, stirring all the time.

Place the sugar, cinnamon and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has melted. Keep the heat low to stop too much water evaporating.

Continue cooking, without boiling, until the mixture coats the back of a spoon.

Spoon the mixture over the pears. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pears are tender and golden, occasionally spooning the sugar mixture over the fruit during the cooking time.

Return to the stove and cook, but do not boil.

To serve: Pour the sauce over the base of the warm dessert plate. Arrange two pear halves on the plate and decorate with grated lemon rind. Stuart Aitken, Head Chef, Eight Acres Hotel

INNES HOUSE

Weddings and Corporate Entertainment A Unique place for any Occasion It is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for your wedding than a 17th century house set in a sheltered walled garden. However, Innes is not just a stunning venue which you and your guests will never forget, but also offers a wholly flexible programme to enable you to plan your day exactly as you would like. Every wedding is unique and tailor-made for each couple. You may hold the ceremony here in the garden or in one of the two beautiful reception rooms. After the service your guests can wander around the gardens whilst you have your photographs taken in these tranquil, romantic surroundings.
