The Editor Scottishness seems to be the hot topic at the moment with numerous debates on independence. Whatever our views on this though is it not just as important to care for one’s neighbour as we would like to be cared for - irrespective of nationality? When we respect others as much as we respect ourselves then don’t we all win?

PASTORAL LETTER & CHURCH MEETINGS A Jewish religious thinker, Martin Buber, said, “Nothing is apt to mask the face of God as much as religion”. Does that surprise or offend you? I would guess that a fair number of folk in today’s parched and hedonistic land might just agree with that! For as often as not, it is the offensive and fanatical who mask the face of the God today. Thankfully, there are still those whose love for us will overcome whoever or whatever we are! Such is the God who, in the person of Jesus Christ, stretched out His hand to the leper and outcasts of society. To those, He brought both healing and resurrection to new life. It’s tough, of course, yet, try we must since as Christians, we are expected to call upon, and to follow the example and teaching of Christ. Of course, we are human and we all trip up and fail that trust from time. Oh, yes we do! Paradoxically, the sin that would appear to have annoyed Jesus more than any others

is that of judging and condemning other people! Let’s be honest, just how often do we get caught doing that? Examples are legion, such as the elder brother of the prodigal son, to Simon Peter shocked that a prostitute dared to touch Jesus. He even had stones ready in his hands ready to throw at the woman accused of adultery! To these and many others, Jesus says, “Why are you so concerned about the speck of wood in your brother’s eye, when there is enough in your own to make a plank!” Now, here we are today, pondering over similar issues with equal passion. The predicament of the leper in the time of Jesus was really bad. Such a person was effectively and cruelly barred from all social life, whether rich or poor. Jesus, however, crossing over all these boundaries, offers a cure and comfort when needed. As God made humankind, Jesus shows us God’s attitude to human foibles and seeks to restore

us to fullness of life. Jesus’ desire is to re-establish communion and harmony to a broken human family. So, as well as the overwhelming need for practical Christian caring for all those who are ill, the Church also needs to remind itself of its vocation to be where it hurts! Not afraid to enter into the places of pain and to share in the brokenness, the fears and the anguish of others. If it is indeed true that in Christ we see the Father, and furthermore, if it is true Christ suffers with his people through membership of his body, the Church; then the face of God is most appropriately shown to be working in every place. But, here’s the rub, we also need to welcome into our midst those whose lifestyles we may find difficult and even controversial!

PARLIAMENT BLOG & TIDE TIMES

Parliament Blog

While it is a few weeks since the event i would like to pay tribute to the speakers and musicians who made Moray SNP’s Burns Supper a huge success. We have always been very good at attracting top speakers from both here in Moray and further afield and, as a result, attract guests to the event that are not necessarily very political but who just love a cracking Burns Supper! i will make special mention of the musicians and especially the young musical talent, which was just phenomenal and really made the evening a special night. The combination of musical talent and the commitment of the youngsters with that talent to make the most of what they have is great to see and i am certainly encouraged to see our young folk performing such fantastic pieces, live in front of a large and appreciative audience!

i was delighted recently when the uK government accepted the long-running case for Arctic Convoy veterans to be recognised with an official medal. on a political level i have long backed the campaign but on a personal level, having a father who was a naval officer, it has always been instilled in me the importance of recognising bravery and the sheer effort of people involved in the defence of our identity and values. The Arctic Convoys were strongly associated with the north of Scotland and were recognised as being one of the harshest environments in the second world war, especially since most of those involved were of a merchant navy rather than a military background. There were many, many casualties and it is absolutely right that the remaining convoy veterans are receiving this long-

overdue recognition of their wartime contribution.

travel

Dreaming of... ... a wedding in paradise

There is a growing trend to get married abroad in resorts which are well geared up for marriages. Civil Partnerships are also available in some countries where the law permits it, mainly in Canada, America and South Africa. Imagine combining the sand, sea and warm air of a Caribbean Island resort with its almost guaranteed weather rather than worrying whether the bride’s hair will get rained on at home. Photos and wedding cakes are the norm as are Champagne receptions and Wedding Dances if you take enough friends and family with you. Indian Ocean Island resorts such the Maldives and Mauritius have resorts that conduct at least one wedding every day, often on the beach, and performed by a Marriage Officer, whose title varies upon the resort, ie in Australia it will be a Celebrant, in Barbados will be a Minister or Registrar, and in Cyprus it can be an Anglican Minister. It is important that the arrangements are made through proper channels to ensure the marriage ceremony, bought in the UK but performed abroad, is compatible with UK Law and recognised as a marriage at home. Travel brochures specialising in Weddings and Honeymoons are now more popular than ever, one even extolling the virtues of the Minimoon and the Maximoon. A Minimoon is a romantic short escape after a wedding, giving you the chance to save up or take the time off at a later date. A Maximoon is for those with time to spare to indulge their ultimate travel fantasy, which for example might be discovering India and Nepal, Botswana in Style Safari, or a tailor-made Round the World trip. The ultimate White Wedding can happen in a ski resort in Lapland. If you’re looking for somewhere with the wow-factor, the Snow Village in Kittila is a serious contender. The frozen piece of architecture is rebuilt every year using a thousand truckloads of snow, and counts a hotel, a bar and a chapel amongst its credentials. In recent years the traditional Honeymoon can be enjoyed in a romantic city, in a quiet rural setting, in a fabulous hotel, or in a cottage in the mountains. Honeymoons can be tailored to any budget – after all you wouldn’t want to fall out over it after a few days of marriage would you‌?

easter

Easter Extravaganza Harvesting & Easter at Roseisle The Forest of Roseisle, along with the many other forests, is a hive of activity and not just preparation for the Easter Extravaganza. The work, is part of the ongoing management of the woodland and will take place between Roseisle Maltings and Burghead and we expect to be finished by April / May at the latest. As well as resulting in some disruption to forest paths, the work will also cause some temporary disruption to public roads in and around Burghead. Diversions will be in place wherever possible. Forestry Commission Scotland’s Paul Raisbeck said: “If the weather is kind to us we might get finished a little earlier but this is a demanding job and heavy machinery will be involved so we’ll be putting warning signs up around the forest. When we’re doing this sort of work the forest can be a dangerous place for visitors – which is why we close some footpaths, put in diversions and put up safety signage. For their own safety, it’s very important that anyone accessing the forest should take careful note of any signs that they encounter.” As well as resulting in some disruption to forest paths, the work will also result in some temporary disruption to public roads in and around Burghead. Diversions will be in place wherever possible. The thinning will yield approximately 2500 tonnes (3000 m3) of timber to be processed at local sawmills and used for housing, pallets, fencing and board products.

Roseisle Easter Extravaganza FCS staff look forward to seeing you at their popular Easter Extravaganza. Get close to a harvester, find out more about Scotland’s amazing wildlife, have a go at the greenwood workshop, marvel at the expertise of the chainsaw carver and enter our free draw to win one of his unique sculptures. There will, of course, be a Bunny Hunt, face painters, Mountain Bikes and much, much more; there really is something for everybody. Burgers and ice cream will be on sale to keep you going, but why not bring a picnic to eat at our picnic site or take the boardwalk down to the beach. The event is on Easter Sunday March 31st between 1pm and 4pm. The car park is accessed from the B9089 between College of Roseisle and Kinloss. The site is equipped with all ability toilet facilities." Forestry Commission Scotland, Moray & Aberdeenshire District Portsoy Road Huntly. Choctober in Elgin and now Nairn!! Whew... As always Olive Tree Chocolate look to see how they can improve on previous events and take Choctober forward into the future. This year sees some significant changes. "The 2012 events were so successful we have been specifically asked to take the event to Nairn. With that in mind we have the first event on Sunday 24th March at Elgin Town Hall, and the second event on Saturday 30th March at Nairn Community Centre. Schools are in until March 28th - this will hopefully allow more people to attend at Elgin before they go away for Easter break - and could attract tourists into the Nairn event."

They are also introducing a competition element for the visitors to get involved in. 'Cakes v Pies' is a baking competition open to anyone. There are junior and adult sections, with a panel of 3 independent judges assessing the entries and deciding the winners. Invitations to take part will go out to all the schools in the area, as well as advertising in Spotlight Magazine and hundreds of posters too. There is a small entry charge which goes directly to the charity Mary's Meals. "This is a real opportunity to make a difference for children in less fortunate parts of the world - just ÂŁ10.70 will buy one meal a day for a child for an entire year." Entries must be registered before the day, with the deadline for registration on March 20th. Junior entry is ÂŁ2, Adult entry is ÂŁ4 with prizes given for first, second and third place. garden

Caring about...

...Lichen – fungal growth on the lawn explained ! One of the joys of our wonderful environment up here is the clean air, and one of the organisms which thrives locally is dog lichen. There are hundreds of species here, growing on trees, rocks and on the grass! It is particularly at home on ground which has become compacted and is low on nutrients. It is one of the most common questions we get from baffled homeowners, and many have found that the garden centre people aren’t sure how to deal with it. We shift it by aerating the ground with a big hollowcore tining machine which removes thousands of cores from the ground allowing air to circulate. A regular feeding programme for the lawn strengthens the grass and this tips the balance of conditions back in favour of the grass, as with all things in nature, it’s about competition. There are no chemical products which permanently remove lichen. You need to improve the ground conditions, otherwise nothing really changes. Golf courses do this all the time, and so do we. Aerating the ground at the end of winter should be part of routine lawncare in any case. The freeze/thaw, freeze/thaw weather we get compacts most ground around here which prevents tender new plant roots spreading, even if the grass has had a spring feed. The ground is too solid. I should also mention scarifying now too. All lawns build up thatch and moss over the year and this surface material stifles the competition (lawn grass). It should be raked out, either by hand or much better, with a scarifier. Be warned, this is a back-breaking, dirty job, which I guess is why it is one of the most common jobs we get asked to do for folk at this time of year. We use blade scarifiers, blowers and sweepers, but it’s still a filthy job! Good luck.

"When quality, craftmanship and value for money come together, The Lion Apartments come to mind." Situated just two miles east of Nairn, the village of Auldearn is steeped in colourful history going back at least 1,500 years. It gets its name from the Old Castle of Eren (Old Eren – Auldearn), which was built around 1180 by William the Lion (King William I) and was still in use in when Robert the Bruce received the surrender of the “Rebellious Men of Moray” in the early 1300’s. For many years the real social hub of Auldearn was the Lion Hotel. Built at the beginning of the last century, it was a fine example of the solid, understated Scottish architecture of the period. Sensitive to the original distinguished exterior, 'PSE' undertook the major challenge and completely re-developed the property into 10 stunning, high-quality two-bedroom flats. The Lion Apartments are indeed a rare breed and one which King William I himself may well have approved. All apartments will have separate Italian designer kitchens of the highest quality and most have en-suites. There’s even the opportunity to choose your own bathroom and kitchen fittings if ordered prior to the building works being completed. Living rooms are light, spacious and comfortable and all have generous windows with views of the picturesque village. The living rooms and bedrooms are also fully carpeted in quality pile, offering a touch of comfort in addition to many years of service. Lion Apartments will be stuffed full of individualistic character and charm. Every flat is uniquely designed to be different from its neighbours, and they’re cleverly laid-out so that all apartments have their own front door access – there are no shared entrances. Elegant details include stone sills and mullions around certain windows with feature stone walling throughout. There’s also a drying area, cycle sheds and enclosed bin storage. Each flat has individual private parking and the gardens will be regularly maintained through a factoring agent. The Lion Apartments is quite simply a “must see” property in one of Moray’s most beautiful areas. There’s nothing quite like it and it may be many years before anything similar comes onto the market. Caring for our equine friend

Most people understand that horses which are kept in some light work all winter, are less likely to become injured when the season for riding and competing begins. Keeping those muscles, tendons and joints toned, means that they have the capacity for coping with an increased workload as the season progresses. It isn't always practical or desirable to be exercising horses in the winter months and when horses first start hacking out or exercising in the new season, problems can first start to show up, which can lead to real problems later in the spring or summer. Vets would much rather deal with minor problems,

therefore hopefully preventing something major developing. Never be afraid to give your vet a call for advice, no matter how trivial you think the issue may be. Detecting problems early can often result in shorter recovery times. We wish you all a successful and injury free season.

When the party is over... We see in the Bible that we are all unclean in God’s sight because of our sins. You may not think that you are a hell-deserving sinner, but God is Holy and He hates sin. Sin will keep you from being with God in heaven for eternity and damn you to Hell, unless you receive God’s forgiveness for sin which is found only in His Son Jesus Christ. God’s word reveals that if you die in an unclean & unforgiven state, because of your own choice, you’ll go to hell with all the other people who refused God’s mercy. There are many people, and you may be one of them, who believe that life should be one never ending party; friends to meet, places to go, and things to get and do, seeking constant amusement in the pursuit of happiness, needing non-stop activity to fill the emptiness inside, to fight the boredom that surrounds them.

You may think. “That’s okay - all my party friends will be there too!” Yes, sadly they will be there too if they too reject Christ, but the thick blackness of “outer darkness” will separate you from each other. It is a place of torment, never ending fear and punishment and you’ll be there on your own.

Right now you are without God in this world and have no hope, but in Christ Jesus you, who are far off, can be brought near by the blood of Christ; He Drugs, alcohol, immoral relationships, money can be your peace.
