Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings Look For The Cross

No sooner are the supermarket shelves emptied of selection boxes than they are filled with chocolate eggs. Christmas has become a distant memory; we are now looking forward to the Easter holidays. Sadly, for many in our town both these momentous events of history mean little more than chocolate and holidays. Perhaps you could be persuaded to stop for a few moments and take a fresh look at the cross. All through our lives, we have been familiar with the symbol of the cross. On our schoolwork, the cross, simply but starkly, informed us that we were wrong. When we receive a birthday card, the cross reminds us that we were loved. The cross on the ballot paper indicated that we had made a choice. The fabled pirate map told that the treasure was to be found at the cross. The cross of the Easter story has strikingly similar lessons for us to learn, read on. We are the ones who got it wrong, we have broken God’s laws – “All

have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”. Yet, on the cross, Jesus Christ died, having borne the judgment that our sins deserved. Unlike our schoolwork, the wrongs (sins) of life can’t be corrected, but they can be forgiven, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Pondering the cross of Jesus Christ reminds us that we are loved – “God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” This love is further described as a “great love” and “an everlasting love”. In considering the above truths of our sin and God’s love, we realise that the cross of Christ leaves us with a stark choice – to believe or not to believe. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him”. Carefully following the guidance of the map, each instruction in succession, eventually led the seeker to the cross where the treasure would be found. The list of the treasures, described as spiritual blessings in the Bible, contains such

riches as: forgiveness of sins, peace with God, placed in the family of God, an inheritance to be enjoyed eternally, to name only a few. To claim such treasures follow the directions in the Bible. In the light of the cross confess to God the sin of your wrongdoing. Thank Him that in spite of your sin He has shown His love in sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross. In making such a choice you are opening the treasures of God’s grace and goodness for your soul to enjoy for all eternity. As Easter approaches, by all means enjoy your creme egg, but don’t forget the cross, or more importantly, the man who died on that cross for our sins. Words by the Wayside “...a friend of... sinners! (Luke 7:34)

JOHN GAMMIE Reader, The Lord Jesus loves the sinner but hates the sin. The Saviour is willing and able to save, but the sinner must acknowledge their sin. It is through repentance toward God and faith in The Lord Jesus Christ that men and women are cleansed from their sins and justified in God’s sight. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, Christ died for the ungodly, there is none righteous, no, not one. Your sins, which are many, He alone can take away.

Parliament Blog & Tide Times As we head towards Easter it’s always a busy time for schools and churches and I will hopefully get the chance to see some of you at the odd daffodil tea or Easter coffee morning being held around Moray which is also a great opportunity to sample some home baking! There is little time for tea and biscuits in the House of Commons just now, although like a coffee morning, there is always plenty to talk about, and recent weeks have been extremely busy with various debates and meetings of the Home Affairs committee which I am a member of. This committee is looking at a range of issues but we recently visited the National Crime Agency which is the lead agency for tackling serious and organised crime and the visit was a real eye-opener in terms of some of the investigations that are ongoing and the joint working with agencies all across the country. On a

lighter note, as a strong supporter for the Scotch Whisky distilled in Moray, I have accepted the challenge of visiting all the distilleries in the area. Watch out for the photos as I will be continuing to promote our iconic national drink! C&P Garage DEC 17.pdf

Last month I was pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of the Building a Fairer Moray Conference, which was held to shine a light on the issues around poverty in Moray. Poverty in Moray is something that has been hidden for a long time but the hardship than many households and individuals in our communities face is in fact very real. We’ve seen an increasing number of referrals to the foodbank for those who are on low incomes and can’t afford to put food on their table, as well as those struggling due to the impact of the UK Government’s welfare cuts. It isn’t acceptable that people in our communities are living in poverty and we all have a responsibility to do everything in our power to end poverty in Moray. The Building a Fairer Moray Conference was an important step in moving this agenda forward, highlighting some of the causes of poverty locally and the steps that must be taken to improve the lives of people who are really struggling.

When the blade loses its’ sharpness, it doesn’t make a clean cut through the grass sward. There are some obvious signs that this might be a problem. It may seem to struggle to give a decent cut at all; there may be issues with clumping and leaving material on the lawn, particularly when the grass has some wet in it (much of the time in our climate). Less understood perhaps is that a blunt blade will often end up tearing the grass leaf, rather than providing a clean cut. If you examine a few blades of grass, you will be able to see either a straight clean cut at the top, or a rather ragged, torn top. The result of a poor cut is bruising to the grass leaf, which causes the tip to turn brown, as it has been damaged. The overall effect can be to leave the grass with poor colour. Instead of an even, healthy green, it has a tinge of brown throughout. A ragged cut to the material of Alastair Watt

Local Artist

...takes part in TV show

Forres artist Jonathan Luxon will be taking part in the current series of “Portrait Artist of the Year 2018” aired on Tuesdays at 8.00pm, (Sky Arts channel) Jonathan’s heat is scheduled for Tuesday 6th March at 8pm. For those who don’t subscribe to the Sky Arts channel, the show can also be viewed at nowtv.com or with most internet TV boxes.

“My main inspiration has always been the human figure. A friend suggested entering this event. I didn’t take it too seriously at first but he kept mentioning it so I painted a self portrait and submitted it. I was pretty shocked when they phoned back to say I’d been selected. The biggest challenge was how to do a portrait in 4 hours as it usually takes me about 40. I spent a month prior to my heat working on my speed. The filming day was a frantic, hair raising experience, but terrific fun. I learned a lot from taking part. It has really helped develop my painting and I am planning to enter again for next year”. Jonathan studied Fine art in Canterbury from 1993-1996 where he specialised in figurative drawing and painting. He has lived in Moray since 2003 where he has worked as a self- employed portrait artist since 2009. As well as portraiture he has recently been focusing on painting the local landscapes, particularly the Findhorn Bay area.

To see Jonathan’s work and find out more about the artist, please visit luxonart.co.uk

THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER, HAVING PREVIOUSLY RUN HIS OWN COMMERCIAL GARDENING BUSINESS FOR TWELVE YEARS.

TOM ALSO BLOGS AS THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER.

In between wintry weeks, we are getting some definite glimpses of spring with its longer days, emerging bulbs and buds on trees. The growing season is definitely not too far away. Before we know it, the air will hum with the sound of lawnmowers and strimmers being started up for the first time. For now, however, although it still feels as if we are in the icy grip of winter some days, the month of March sees the first of the new growing season’s tasks needing to get done. Let’s go!

DO cut back Cornus sanguinea and Cornus alba. Don’t be shy about it either, you can cut them down hard (to 6-12”) to encourage beautiful winter stems next year. DO plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Alliums and Oriental Lilies. DO lightly hose your beds to disturb any emerging weeds. DO prune Buddleja davidii, again these should be taken down hard. DO prune your bush Roses, and remember the maxim that you should always ‘get your worst enemy to prune your Roses’…..that is to say, you can prune these guys hard too! DO divide any herbaceous perennials and give the clumps away or plant them somewhere else in your garden. You can do this in Autumn too.

32

DON’T work your beds or walk in them a lot if they are wet, you’ll compact the soil (and also create stubborn muddy footprints on your lawn!) DON’T forget to make sure your ponds are clear of debris, and consider putting pond heaters away once temperatures are high enough. DON’T forget to order your seed potatoes, as they need a chance to ‘chit’ on your windowsill before being planted out. DON’T forget to cut back any growth you’ve left on herbaceous perennials over the winter, including any old seed-heads. Remember to keep the birds fed too, and ensure all your machinery and tools are serviced and have sharp blades. I love this time of year, I’m just itching to get started on some serious graft in the garden! I’ve some interesting garden designs on the go at the moment too, and am looking forward to some more exciting projects this year!

(1st John 4:14)

Reader, the Lord Jesus gave His life a ransom for all. Because of His work on the Cross of Calvary the “whosoever can be saved (and that means YOU!) We all either accept and receive Him as our Saviour or we refuse the provision God has made for us in Christ. We alone are responsible. The Lord would have all men to be saved; those who come to Him, He never turns away. Come to Him now.

Barry

Woodward Inspirational Evangelist Free Entry “An amazing true life personal story told in a frank but amusing style” Barry Woodward grew up in Greater Manchester, England. At the age of 16 he left school without any qualifications and was drawn into the drug scene, experimenting with cannabis, amphetamines and LSD. This led to a heroin addiction and life as a drugs supplier. For twelve years he was totally dependent on drugs, during which time he spent a number of terms in prison. Miraculously, his life turned around completely following an amazing sequence of supernatural encounters. Following his rehabilitation Barry has been a banker, had a job in a marketing consultancy, and then a technology company, and then for seven years was the Senior Pastor of the Cambridge Vineyard Church in England and currently spends much of his time visiting prisons to relate his story and pass on his experiences. Barry will talk about his personal encounter with Jesus Christ and offer a message of hope for all. Even if we think our own circumstances have not been as challenging as his, the message is definitely one to be heard by all of us who can admit to finding life a struggle sometimes.

SpotLIGHT Recipe

SWEET POTATO & ORANGE WAFFLES When they taste this recipe, no one will think twice about having waffles beyond breakfast again. You'll want these for dinner, lunch, and a late-night snack. The batter is simple—flour, cooked sweet potato, and milk. Orange zest brightens the homemade sweet potato waffles, and cumin adds the perfect savoury note that is versatile enough for different toppings.

Ingredients: ½ cup peeled diced sweet potato 2 cups plain flour 1 tbsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 6 egg whites

1 cup milk ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup melted butter zest of 1 orange

Method: 1. Steam the sweet potatoes for about 15 minutes or until fork tender then mash with a WV[H[V THZOLY HUK ZL[ HZPKL °

2. 0U H SHYNL IV^S ^OPZR [VNL[OLY MSV\Y IHRPUN WV^KLY HUK ZHS[ ° 3.In another bowl combine the mashed sweet potatoes with the milk, brown sugar, butter, and grated orange zest.

4.Stir the sweet potato mixture into the flour mixture and mix until thoroughly combined. 5.Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold egg whites into batter 1/3 at a time (The batter will be thick) Scoop the batter onto a preheated, oiled waffle iron, and cook until lightly browned, about 5 to 6 minutes. If you don't have a waffle iron use a heavy based skillet instead.

Enjoy! 38
