Pastoral Le er & Church Meetings “Now for the latest traffic and travel … the A93 is closed at the ‘Rest and Be Thankful.’ ” Sound familiar? Linking Loch Lomond with the Argyle peninsula, the road was completed by General Wade in 1753. Reaching the summit between Glens Crowe and Kinglas, travellers were thankful to have made the ascent and rest. A stone was erected, suitably engraved, ‘Rest and Be Thankful.’ It’s also a suitable description of entering heaven! But how do you get there? Jesus tells us in Matt 11:28 - “Come unto Me, all who are weary and overburdened and I will give you rest.” Who is the speaker? The greatest and best friend man ever had, the eternal son of God. Almighty ~ God the Father’s equal, creator of the universe, holding the keys of death and hell and the coming judge of all. So what He says, He can do! All-loving, whereby He left a holy heaven to come into a sinful world, agreeing to pay our debt of sin, dying to atone for it. So what he promises, you can trust. All-knowing, having taken a body like ours. He knows temptation, pain, misrepresentation, hunger, thirst, poverty and weariness. So when He speaks, He knows what we need. All-faithful, never failing to do what He promised, never disappointing any who

What’s on, Clubs, Eating out, Trades Listings and much more...

have trusted in Him, for He can never sin, therefore, can never lie. To whom is He speaking? Everyone on the planet ~ every community in every region of every country. Troubles, cares, anxieties, sorrows, discontent, abound everywhere. The rich and educated have them as much as the poor and uneducated. What has caused such troubles, weariness, burdens and aching hearts? Sin and departure from God! Reluctant to confess it, secretly you feel a burden on your heart but don’t know how to get rid of it. It matters nothing what you are or what you have been. Stop arguing against your own happiness and admit you are one of those Jesus is addressing right now! What is He speaking? “Come unto Me.” Not, ‘Go and do good works,’ or ‘stand still and wait,’ or ‘pay Me what you owe.’ He says, “Come to Me.” Not, ‘come to church,’ ‘come and take Communion.’ Millions did that who today are in hell. On their arrival they were amazed: “Why am I here, I believed about Jesus?” “So did we,” the demons laugh mockingly, “but we never trusted and obeyed Him and neither did you!” Devoid of sufficient goodness to commend you, just come with your sins to Jesus directly, completely and unreservedly.

There are some invitations in this life which are better and wiser to decline. There is one invitation which ought always to be accepted … the one Jesus is speaking to you today. What does He promise? Rest! How pleasant physical rest is after a long day’s work, but this is rest for your heart. Some people are minted, yet their hearts are starving in the midst of worldly plenty. Jesus gives rest of heart, conscience, mind, will, with sins forgiven and peace with God. Implanting His Spirit in the heart, assuring them that they are now His children, they find old things have passed away and all things have become new. Discovering the purpose of life, Jesus puts everything in order. There is only one place to find such rest ~ government cannot give it; education cannot impart it; pleasure cannot supply it; money cannot buy it ~ it is found only in the hand of Jesus! Come and take it today and when you have it, it will follow you throughout life, death and into heaven, where you will enjoy ultimate rest and forever be thankful that you heard and accepted Jesus’ invitation here to ‘come!’

SpotLIGHT Garden

Brought to you by:

Complete Lawn Makeover – a project this year ? Many of you will, in your darkest moments, consider giving up on your lawn… too far gone ….. wouldn’t know where to start ….. best to get it dug up and put down a new lawn ! Replacing a lawn can be very expensive however whether you plan to replace it with a new lawn or even slabs or gravel. Consider this, a worn-out lawn can actually be renovated in situ at a fraction of the cost of removing and replacing the whole thing. I have included here a Before and After picture taken just a few weeks apart. I suggest there are 4 stages in the process, and you could either try this yourself, probably with some hired machines, or get some help (probably best as you have to live with the results for years to come). 1. Hollow tine Aeration removes thousands of cores, reducing compaction and allowing air to move in the root zone, encouraging microbial activity and root development. 2. Severe Scarification removes as much thatch as possible, allowing the seed to find the soil surface which always aids germination. Once the thatch has been removed it has to be cleaned off the surface by either raking or sweeping, using a leaf sweeper.

4. Top Dressing covers the seed. Many think top dressing should be a sandy soil mix. We actually use a lawn compost, manufactured from recycled green waste and therefore environmentally friendly. It contains nutrient to assist existing grass and promote good germination from the seed and aids good microbial activity. This is applied at 2kg per m². All that’s required now is regular watering until the seed germinates (regular rainfall isn’t usually a problem in these parts). The best time to tackle this is June-Sept in Scotland, and that means starting planning now for your new lawn this summer. At around £2 per m² to renovate, compared with around £12 per m² to replace, it really is worth considering.

Before

3. Seeding should be applied at a rate of 20-25gms per m². The seed, being on the soil surface, puts it in direct contact with the material that will help it germinate; it is however open to the elements and can be disrupted by heavy winds and birds’ feasting.

After

What’s on, Clubs, Eating out, Trades Listings and much more...

Parliament Blog & Tide Times News in Moray over recent weeks has been dominated by the cuts being introduced at Moray Council as the local authority comes to terms with years of its budget being reduced by the Scottish Government. The scale of the services affected has left no part of Moray unscathed and many areas that were previously shielded from the worst of the savings have now been included. Of particular concern have been the savings proposed for services that our young people rely on. Whether it is the closure of swimming pools or libraries, the removal of school crossing patrollers and the active schools team or the doubling of the cost of instrumental music tuition, these savings are a bitter blow to the youth in the area who rely on these services particularly in a rural community like Moray. I’ve been encouraged that politicians from all parties - including the SNP group leader - have accepted that the funding formula does not work for Moray and it’s time for us all to join together to demand a fair financial settlement for Moray Council from the Scottish Government so we can try to protect the services we value most.

“As a country we must change our transport priorities, ensuring that investment in high quality, reasonably priced public transport, and segregated active travel routes are prioritised. Bus patronage has been falling year on year, yet the current Transport Bill fails to propose radical plans needed to regulate services and empower local authorities. Something which I will be seeking to amend in the upcoming Transport Bill. We are also failing on active travel, with the 10% target of everyday journeys by bike set to be missed by some way. The recent increase in investment is welcome, but this must be targeted at segregated routes. Encouraging more people out of their cars will benefit society by improving our health and our environment.”

While Christmas is a very distant memory, at the time of writing this I’ve just handed over a cheque to Abbie’s Sparkle Foundation with the funds raised through my annual charity Christmas card. I was delighted to raise over £800 for Abbie’s Sparkle and would like to thank the local businesses (Baxters of Fochabers, Walkers Shortbread, Forsyths Ltd, Spey, Robertson Homes, Springfield PLC, Strathdee Properties and Highland Parcels) who sponsored the card. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Christmas Sparkle’ which is incredibly fitting given Abbie’s love of Christmas and glitter. Abbie’s Sparkle is such a special local charity who’ve been doing phenomenal work to support children living with cancer and to deliver a fitting legacy for Abbie who wanted to raise money for ‘hospitals and stuff’. The local community really has behind them and they’ve raised a significant amount of money over the last year and have been helping children in their hour of need. I am grateful to the schools who supported the competition and the children who sent in their sparkly designs.

The Wych Elm

By Kay Featherstone, Catherine Allinson

By Tana French One night changes everything for Toby Hennessey. A brutal attack leaves him damaged and traumatised, unsure even of the person he used to be. He seeks refuge at his family's ancestral home, the Ivy House, filled with memories of wild-strawberry summers and teenage parties with his cousins. But not long after Toby's arrival, a discovery is made: a skull, tucked neatly inside the old wych elm in the garden. As detectives begin to close in, Toby is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about his family, his past, and himself.

The first cookbook from the founders of the UK's most visited food blog. Helping novice and experienced home-cooks enjoy exciting, flavourful and satisfying meals - all of which are compatible with the principles of Weight Watchers and Slimming World.

Seven Signs of Life

By Aoife Abbey Junior Fiction (Under 5s)

The Wonky Donkey By Craig Smith

The book behind the YouTube sensation of a granny reading this story to her grandchild, viewed over 3 million times. Who ever heard of a spunky hanky-panky cranky stinky-dinky lanky winky wonky donkey?

Grief. Anger. Joy. Fear. Distraction. Disgust. Hope. All emotions we expect to encounter over our lifetime. But what if this was every day? And what if your ability to manage them was the difference between life and death? For a doctor in Intensive Care this is part of the job. Fear in the eyes of a terminally ill patient who pleads with you to not let them die. Grief when you make a potentially fatal mistake. Disgust at caring for a convicted rapist. But there are also moments of joy, like the rare bright spots of lucidity for a dementia patient, or when the ward unexpectedly breaks into song.

We Must be Brave By Francesa Liardet Spanning the sweep of the twentieth century, We Must Be Brave is a luminous and profoundly moving novel about the people we rescue and the ways in which they rescue us back. December, 1940. As German bombs fall on Southampton, the city’s residents flee to the surrounding villages. In Upton village, amid the chaos, newly-married Ellen Parr finds a girl sleeping, unclaimed at the back of an empty bus. Little Pamela, it seems, is entirely alone. As the war rages on, love grows where it was least expected, surprising them all. But with the end of the fighting comes the realization that Pamela was never theirs to keep

Junior Fiction (Teenage)

This Lie Will Kill You By Chelsea Pitcher One year ago, there was a party. At the party, someone died. Five teens all played a part and up until now, no one has told the truth. But tonight, the five survivors arrive at an isolated mansion in the hills, expecting to compete in a contest with a $50,000 grand prize. Instead, they realise they've been lured together by a person bent on revenge who wants to finally unravel the truth about what actually happened that deadly night, one year ago.

ANGEL HORTICULTURE LTD. TOM ALSO BLOGS AS ‘THE MOUNTAIN GARDENER’ WHICH YOU CAN FIND ON HIS WEBSITE AT WWW.ANGELHORT.COM Spring is around the corner! February is the hardest month in the garden in some ways, and it can be difficult to be aware of the rumblings that are starting to happen in some of our plants and trees at the moment. In our ubiquitous Birch trees for example, the sap will be starting to rise in earnest any day. There are jobs to do in the garden this month to get everything ready for the spring, and it is always satisfying anyway to have a good pre-spring tidy up. With the lack of foliage on many shrubs, and other plants having died back for the winter, now is a great time to get really stuck into your flowerbeds getting debris, leaves and twigs tidied up. Be careful, however, of enthusiastic bulbs and herbaceous perennials, some of which are peaking above the surface already. Ornamental grasses need work at this time of year too. Deciduous grasses should be cut back, ready

34

Overgrown hedges can be renovated at this time of year as well. They will be clear of nesting birds at the moment and they will tolerate a hard cut, so if you need to do a major tidy or reduce the size of a hedge then now is the time. Be aware though that the likes of Cypress hedges, like Leylandii, will not re-grow if you cut past the green growth, so you need to be careful with them. Snowdrops are making an appearance right now, the last flowers of the winter. Snowdrop bulbs are really difficult to succeed with, so transplanting them ‘in the green’ is the best way to get them started. This means waiting until the flowers have gone over and then transplanting the individual plants. You can buy them like this, or perhaps a friendly neighbour might be kind enough to let you take some that you can then let naturalise in your own garden. Finally, lawn repairs are best carried out at this time of year. Re-cut the edges to flowerbeds and spike any boggy patches. If you spike patches in your lawn remember to brush in a sharp sand and top soil mixture. If you would like to see more of what I get up to, you can check out my website at www.angelhort.com

Red onion chutney recipe Many people believe chutneys to be an English invention. In fact, the dish originates from Northern India. Indeed, the word ‘chutney’ itself is a corruption of the Indian chatni. It’s derived from the word chatna which literally means ‘to lick’ and represents the lip-smacking sound made on eating something tasty (such as a chutney is meant to be). Typically, the original Indian chatni is made from a mix of uncooked fruit (such as mangoes, apples, bananas etc), green chillies, green herbs and spices, an acid base such as vinegar or tamarind juice and sometimes sugar ground together to make a paste. Indian chatnis are fresh and intended to be consumed soon after they are made. Chutney is a great way to use fruits and vegetables on the edge of expiration and it makes a bland meal pop.

Ingredients: 1.5kg red onions 290g brown sugar 180mls red wine or balsamic vinegar 150mls red wine 2cloves garlic chopped 2 star anise 2tsp coriander seeds pinch salt and pepper Pinch salt and pepper Zest of a lemon

Method: Peel onions and slice thinly either by hand or with a blender attachment. Warm a little olive or sesame oil if preferred in a heavy bottomed saucepan. Saute the onion until soft but not browned too much. Then add a couple tablespoons of the brown sugar and turn up the heat so it starts to caramelise, keeping a close eye it doesnt burn. Add all remaining ingredients and boil for 20 to 30 mins until thick and dark. If still looks runny cook a little longer. Spoon into sterilised jars and seal. Best left for a few week to age a bit but can be eaten when cold if you can’t wait. Great on burgers with cheese or in a sandwich.

Outfit Moray's Cairngorm to Coast (aka C2C) event is a 100km hike and bike challenge that takes place against the backdrop of the magnificent Cairngorm National Park and along the beautiful scenery of the Dava Way. The event is split 30km/70km, taking you from the heights of the Highlands to the coast of 0RUD\ LWpV WKH DUHDpV PRVW VWXQQLQJ GXDWKORQ HYHQW } Cairngorm to Coast – The Route +HOG HDFK \HDU LQ}0D\ &DLUQJRUP WR &RDVW LV FXUUHQWO\ WKH RQO\ HYHQW RI LWV type in the Highlands and Moray area. It starts at the Cairngorm Ski Centre carpark and from there, participants hike or, for the first time this year, bike to Grantown on Spey. The route takes them from the Sugar Bowl, through Glenmore Forest to Glenmore Lodge, on towards Nethy Forest and Lyngarry towards Nethy Bridge. There they join the Speyside Way to the Force Development Training Centre. Highlights along the way include the magical Lochan Uaine and its mystical green water, said to be caused by fairies washing their FORWKHV DQG WKH SRSXODU 5\YRDQ %RWK\ D ZHOO NQRZQ KDYHQ IRU PDQ\ D ZDONHU } At Grantown, those taking part in the hike-only element hang up their boots, receive their medals and enjoy some hot food and a massage. For everyone else, there's the option to get something hot to eat and a massage, if needed, before picking up their bikes and heading up the Dava Way. The old railway line ends at Forres, so participants join a local Sustrans route for their final leg to Lossiemouth.
